"Though the term “herd behaviour” today is most often used when talking about financial markets, it originally described individuals in a group acting together without direction – for example an animal herd fleeing from a predator. When seen from above, animal herds seem to follow intricate and intriguing patterns."

When we watch Planet Earth, I'm always amazed at the sheer numbers of herds. I like to think of herds as >1000 (is that less than?), but we saw one doc that showed something like 25K gazelles. Amazing. Or the one with the gigantic flock of birds. WOW.
- Admiral Anika
Planet Earth is an amazing documentary. I guess Nature's Great Events are on their way to the US soon too. That's another great natural history doc from the BBC.
- Kol Tregaskes
Yes, I've seen NGE, but seriously PE is infinitely better, visually speaking. The only thing that bugs me about PE is the constant, "Thanks to our brand-new, super-expensive technology we were able to be the first to capture this fish swimming." or whatever. Enough with the dick-stroking just give me facts.
- Admiral Anika
Yeah but there isn't much of that to be fair and is completely overshadowed by the quality of the images and documentary. Both NGE and PE are excellent. We get so much of that from the BBC, it's great.
- Kol Tregaskes
You don't think it's a lot? The other night we watched the PE marathon on Discovery. In each hour show, Weaver must have mentioned it 3 - 4 times. That's a lot to me. :) I can't wait to get both series in a boxset, but we agreed that we'll wait until we get a better TV.
- Admiral Anika
Anyone know when the new Planet Earth is coming out, i heard they were filming it a long time ago but i know it takes years to make those?
- Steve C
Steve, I had no idea there was even a new one in the making. How exciting.
- Admiral Anika
Steve, I just realized that the Planet Earth marathon I was watching was narrated by Sigourney Weaver, whereas the old ones were narrated by David Attenborough. Maybe these are the new ones, which explains why I was confused over some of the topics thinking, "Gosh I don't remember that one."
- Admiral Anika
New Planet Earth? News to me. I think there is a "movie" coming out or even out but I've not heard of any new series.
- Kol Tregaskes
In the U.S. Discovery cut the episodes and redid the narration with Sigourney. Same footage.
- Stephen Mack
Ah you can't beat David Attenborough - who could ever replace him?
- Kol Tregaskes
I'll have to look it up, but I thought it was in like Discovery magazine that they were making the next set of series. I was wrong once in like the second grade, so I guess it could happen again.
- Steve C
Seriously? I liked Attenborough's narration.
- Admiral Anika
Anika. That's what I meant. There's no one better IMHO. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
David Attenborough is the king. Nobody else comes close. He's an incredible man- Parkinson did a great interview with him.
- Bec Rowe @d0tski
And Attenborough says he has no plans to retire. Yippee for us. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Heavy pc and crt, ok, but the subwoofer too? You know how heavy those things are? This would work in space maybe.

And I wonder where it's getting powered from. Is there an extension cord behind him, or maybe he's got a generator attached to his feet?
- Costa Walcott
But which way would it point? Or should there be two, one aimed at his face, and one on the visor of his hat, to see what he can see?

yesterday in the Prop 8 suit in the CA supreme court, the judge asked the anti-gay marriage attorney how gay marriage would threaten heterosexual couples. the lawyer said "I don't know."
- Debi Toews
Debi, I read that myself and laughed. The district court judge asked them to define 'harm' to traditional marriage and the prop-8 lawyer was totally stumped. I'm extremely interested to see how this goes down.
- veo
I still can't figure out what the downside to R71 is. There is no reason to oppose it other than hatred.
- Sparky
Sparky, the official statement against it has the expected crap about "protecting straight marriage" and then also says: "If Senate Bill 5688 is implemented, it will mean another massive expansion of government and Washingtonian taxpayers will be stuck with a multi-million dollar bill. Now is not the time to provide more entitlements to a very small minority of the population." Sounds like some vague "it'll cost you a lot of money" thing.
- Rochelle
Including the heterosexual elderly, not just gay couples.
- joey
yeah, the judge doesn't seem very friendly to the anti-gay marriage foes :)
- Debi Toews
Rochelle - how exactly will it cost more money? To my mind we are just saving money now by rejecting benefits for some people, rather than spending more money later.
- Sparky
Sparky, they probably mean by creating agencies to handle the paperwork to file and maintain, etc. Which I think has already been set up?
- joey
It won't. It's just a scare tactic. There is a radio add that says basically "State legislators have their plates full with economic issues and getting jobs back in our state, Ref 71 is just a waste of time and a distraction so vote NO to send a message to lawmakers to keep on task with the economy" It's about 20 levels of WTF.
- veo
Equal rights for everybody except the ditch diggers. :(
- Akiva Moskovitz
Because we already implemented domestic partnerships, so the work has been done. GEEEZ.
- joey
Joey - we already have those agencies as we already have domestic partnerships. This bill just expands the rights of those with a DP.
- Sparky
If only everyone would be as motivated for polygamist rights.
- Gus
This might feed the 'slippery slope' argument that people like to use against equality, but what exactly *is* wrong with plural relationships? As long as no one is actively/directly damaged by a given relationship, it shouldn't matter what the topology of that relationship is. Two husbands and one wife? why not? Three wives? WHO CARES? Follow your bliss. Not liking that your neighbor has two significant others isn't direct damage.
- veo
Why not 20 husbands and 1 wife to rule them all?
- Gus
Why not? Who does it qualitatively hurt? No one, thats who.
- veo
Yeah, this one-on-one "couple" stuff is so old-fashioned.
- Gus
Gus, I can't tell if you're mocking me or not. It's my opinion that the specifics of a given relationship is none of the public's or state's business. Marriage as a legal entity with specific morally-mandated rules *is* antiquated. Marriage should be a domestic/financial/emotional contract between individuals that is available in any size/shape.
- veo
Sounds like Gus hasn't had a threesome yet.
- Rochelle
Does that imply you have Rochelle? Oh wait, wife #2, right.

I see no reason that it wouldn't work on WordPress. I integrated FB Connect into my theme a while back, and it's easy enough to do. This would just take the "create a FB App" out of the process.
- Otto
I don't know how to do the upload file part. Would be better to have a way to do this via WordPress.
- Thomas Hawk
Google Friend Connect had this process for a while, now they improved over FC again by eliminating the file-upload part. No uploads needed now.
- Ray Cromwell
The whole file upload thing is necessary for allowing FB to set cookies on your site (cross-domain). It's not hard, just upload the file to your web host in the normal manner, like FTP or what have you. I mean, you had to upload WordPress to the site the first time, right? Google gets around it by not storing cookies on your domain, they just call back to their servers on every hit instead.
- Otto
actually Otto somebody else uploaded WordPress to my site for the first time. I'm not sure how to upload files to my domain. It would be nice if they had a WP widget that you could just install that did all of this for you.
- Thomas Hawk
Unfortunately, it just doesn't work that way, Thomas. WordPress doesn't really have the same kind of control over your website that you do, in many cases. And if you don't have the ability to put files on and off your site, then it's really questionable as to whether it's "your" site at all. I'd highly recommend getting that level of control, ASAP.
- Otto
I'm sure I have the ability. I just don't have the know how.

"Q: Did you resist at that time? A: A little bit, but not really because . . . Q: Because what? A: Because I was afraid of him. That's Roman Polanski's 13-year-old victim testifying before a grand jury about how the famous director forced himself on her at Jack Nicholson's Mulholland Drive home in March of 1977. I'm reading this in the district attorney's office at the Los Angeles County Criminal Courts Building, digging through the Polanski file to refresh my memory of the infamous case, and my blood pressure is rising. Is it because I'm the parent of a girl? Maybe that's part of it. But I wish the renowned legal scholars Harvey Weinstein and Debra Winger, to name just two of Polanski's defenders, were here with me now. I'd like to invite Martin Scorsese, as well, along with David Lynch, who have put their names on a petition calling for Polanski to be freed immediately. What, because he won an Oscar? Would they speak up for a sex offender who hadn't? To hear these people tell it,...

probably the best write up on the Polanski case I've seen yet. Strong writing and good work by Steve Lopez at the L.A. Times for putting together this op/ed piece and pointing out the moral failure of those who are currently supporting Polanski.

A few months back, we highlighted a few tips to take better nighttime pictures. Now photography weblog Digital Photography School is chiming in with six more ways to score better night shots, including how to breathe properly when snapping away. Photo by John Krantz. In low light situations, a steady hand can make all the difference between a crisp shot and a blurred mess. According to the post, it's best not to hold your breath during the shot. Instead: Breathe normal and steady, don't hold your breath. I read some place that sharp shooters are trained to squeeze the trigger while exhaling as the body tends to relax during that portion of the breathing cycle. I've found this to be mostly true and it does help with longer shutter speeds. It's also helpful to keep your finger on the shutter release when taking a shot, as attempting to remove it will "likely cause minor shakes." Browse the post for the other night photo tips. If, on the other hand, you're snapping away on your...

"Today, exactly two years after launching at TechCrunch40, I’m excited to announce that Mint.com has signed a definitive agreement to be acquired by Intuit for about $170m. ... Mint was built in the Silicon Valley way. It started in my apartment, with Matt Snider and Poornima Vijayashanker. We interviewed the first real “professional,” our VP of Engineering, David Michaels in our kitchen."

@maxxt: I'm afraid it would take it too long for services like mint.com to become popular in Russia. People will not entrust a start up with bank account information....
- DS
my emotional response to this is like when yahoo bought flickr... although I understand mint got much more money... but still as an early customer it feels like from people who cared about what they were doing all my sensitive information was sold to an evil corporation.. even understanding that most of the companies are founded to be at some point sold to another doesn't really help (and yeah, I'm glad for Aaron)
- earlyadopter
Aaron and the Mint team will most likely benefit from this acquisition but I am not yet sure the Mint users will. Hope Intuit/Mint will prove me wrong...
