"I think you just answered your question. The liberal moslems in this country either too afraid to admit it or just simply don't care. For those whos to afraid to admit it usually afraid that they will not be considered as a real moslem by they neighborhood or society. We've seen what happen to people that openly admitting that they are Islamic liberal here in Indonesia (remember what happen to JIL?). I think one of the problem is the so called religious leaders (ustadz, dai, kyai, etc) here in Indonesia, most of them are still dominated by those educated in an old school way. And most moslem in Indonesia seek out their words without questions. The other problem is, imho we had been under colonialization for far too long that we have this feudalism mentality that everything must be start from top to bottom. "I beg to differ. I believe what you see is a small portion of muslims and not on general. And that small portion is the one that get the most exposure from medias (terrorism? religion based street anarchy? fpi?). I think most Indonesian muslims especially those in urban society and the middle-upper class families are becoming more liberal at general in the last 10-15 years. I don't think hijab can be use as an indicator that someone become more conservative. Most moslems in Indonesia are more modern and liberal compared to 10-15 years ago. I even think for a country with most muslims people in the world we are waaay very liberal. And this fact is really pissing off that small portion I mentioned earlier. (forgive my bad english)."
