Have you ever met a person who doesn't like dolphins? If you do- run!
- michael sean wright
I was lucky enough to swim with dolphins off Hurghada, Egypt in the Red Sea. For budget travelers - 10 Euro for a catered 8-hr boat ride to snorkeling/diving sites. It's super-cheap there (Egyptians only make $25/month...), so support your fellow humans & send them more money. :-)
- Mitchell Tsai
Has anyone seen the Penn & Teller episode about dolphins? Fucking HILARIOUS!!
- Corie
Corie: Not yet... Is it on the web anywhere?
- Mitchell Tsai
Wow, thanks for the tip Mitchell! It's one of my dreams to swim with dolphins one of the days, so I'll take note of that.
- Vincent X
Vincent X: Belize (Central America) is also a cheap place with incredible snorkeling. The sharks and rays were swimming between our legs (so used to tourists). Not sure if there are dolphins in Belize.
- Mitchell Tsai
Yikes. I think I'll pass on the shark-between-the-legs swim though... Wouldn't want one of them to suddenly feel like having a snack. :)
- Vincent X
whats really cool is 15 or 20 of them riding a ships bow wave at 20+ knots. Talk about a escort
- Moved to Facebook
Ahhhhhhahaaha!! Here's another clip. "I'll lead you through an internal experience to call forth your inner dolphin and then we'll bring our inner dolphin out so that we're completely immersed in our dolphin aspect ... that is us." http://ca.youtube.com/watch...
- Corie
Dolphins are the cutest creatures! And such smart animals too! I had the immensely wonderful chance to scuba dive with dolphins in the Red Sea and I loved EVERY BIT of the experience. That is one thing I will do again. and again.

I'd sure like to see a personal Twitter timeline similar to coverflow where I can easily go back and forth through tweeting history and see what I've said over the years...

Ok, I'll admit it, I've shamelessly hitched a ride on Robert's coat-tail by embedding the feed from this discussion into a page on my website. http://twitclicks.com/rlrn
- Sharon McPherson
Just had a brief discussion at work about Philip Seymour Hoffman and as a result I learned that no one here in my IT department has heard of Robert Scoble.
I'd never heard of him either until he discovered FriendFeed.
- Cristo
I am certainly not implying that it is either a good or bad thing, just an observation. The majority of folks I work with definitely aren't into blogs/blogging/social networks/etc, which probably explains why his name wasn't familiar. Oddly enough everyone knew who Alex Scoble is, referring to him as "official president of the Bruce Campbell fan club".
- Nicholas Kreidberg
I was talking with some of the science teachers at school and when I mentioned "Robert Scoble" they all said "Oh! We know him!" :)
- Michael Forian
The IT guys are all gamers -- they don't know from social networks. The marketers know. I'll never forget a few years ago when RS was still at Microsoft, I was in a meeting where an old school ad gal was talking about the hot new thing: blogs! She mentioned Robert by name and I was duly impressed.
- Sprague D
No disrespect to Robert, but one of the things that irritates me about the direction social media is headed is that it's all about how well known you are, without regard to the accomplishments you've made. There are plenty of smart people that are creating great things, but just aren't spending 24/7 promoting themselves. This kind of preoccupation with fame and attention in the US, is what may ultimately have China leading the world technologically.
- Cristo
Chris: I agree with you in some senses, the whole "social media celebrity" thing has gone a little far in some cases, although I don't think Robert is a good example of that as he has accomplished a great deal and (imho) deserves the accolades that he receives.
- Nicholas Kreidberg
I think that China will ultimately kick our asses technologically because they are pumping out a lot more engineers than we are.
- Alex Scoble
Robert's fame is a by-product of the work he does. In social networking, which by definition involves connecting identities to other identities, how could you be successful at it without becoming well-known or "popular"?
- Sprague D
Alex, and those engineers are probably not spending all their time on twitter and facebook. To be fair, I didn't really know who Philip Seymour Hoffman was either until people started talking about it on here during the Oscars.
- Cristo
Engineers in this country aren't spending a lot of time on Twitter or Facebook either. Most of the guys I know are nose to the grindstone.
- Alex Scoble
Hence one of the reasons I deleted my account. Leave the marketing to the marketeers.
- Cristo
Naw, you just deleted so you didn't have to play the DJ guessing game anymore.
- Alex Scoble
I just think it's funny that his name came up in a discussion of Philip Seymour Hoffman. If they ever need a RS character in a movie he's the guy that could play him for sure.
- bill Streeter
Not all journalists (nor all IT people.) In part, it's an age/generational thing.
- Anthony Citrano
Having docs outside the organization like what you find in Google Docs is all kinds of madness for most corporations for a variety of reasons. There's nothing outdated about that. From a security perspective it's a complete non-starter.
- Alex Scoble
The FFIEC and other audit bodies would have a field day if corporations went wholesale to something like Google Docs. Not to mention that for law firms it's a non-starter based on the functionality that you'd lose.
- Alex Scoble
Tweet, I'm not sure what you're talking about. How did we get here? I was taking IT in the general sense of the word. Most of the engineers I worked with when I was at Google knew how to use Google Docs. They are also quite imaginative.
- Cristo
Sometimes I think FriendFeed is just for arguing. What happens when you want to stop?
- Cristo
You start discussing, Chris...or just not type anything.
- Alex Scoble
You'll do best to ignore Tweet Feeds. that user exists solely to make factless statements only to have them bring up something you haven't even mentioned. How can you possibly take seriously someone who spells out what IT Dept. is after you've already said you work in IT?
- Captain Bubbles
OK, as a CISSP that has done operational security and now risk management, I'm sorry, but an IT department telling users not to use Google Docs is doing the right thing. A corporation needs to maintain control of documentation within an organization for a multitude of reasons. This has nothing to do with job security for the IT person. In most companies the person who would be putting their job at risk is someone who unwisely uses Google Docs for corporate documents.
- Alex Scoble
I have to agree 100% with Alex on this one, I work for a government research organization with more DOD/DOE restrictions than you can shake a stick at. Do you think the Department of Defense or the Department of Energy would promote using Google docs to store our research funding proposals or patent requests? Probably not...
- Nicholas Kreidberg
This thread has some serious derailment issues.
- Cristo
And the derailer even was so kind as to delete all his comments (TweetFeeds)
- Alex Scoble
No one who is on friendfeed tonight should be driving :)
- Gavin
I wish someone thought of this when I still had a babysitter!

You hide a Flickr entry because it's NSFW, take a drink. You see an entry from more than two weeks ago come up again, take a drink. The entry from more than two weeks ago is Eddie Murphy's huge head, chug it!

Now that's a drinking game that everyone can "win". :-D

Yep. It's from the Dash GPS (http://dash.net). Unfortunately I hardly go anywhere these days so it's pointless, but I can't help using it from time to time.

I truly my love my Dash GPS...I would keep it and drop Satellite Radio if I had to choose one.

Wish I knew. These Pixdaus people post 90% without references. I'd love to dump this picture into a "picture search" engine to find a match...
- Mitchell Tsai
i also like to dump many photo into a search engine and find many thing about them. is it a dream?
- Mahdi Ebrahimi
Mahdi: I'd love that dream also. Maybe someone has made one?
- Mitchell Tsai
Pixdaus has some ridiculous pics. DeviantArt is nice. I've got to start fishing the pictures from photographers' home websites. There are some incredible photographers out there. I wonder if I'll ever shoot pictures like these... It's more fun looking at other people's pics than processing my own (procrastinating habit is tough to kick). :-( My last 100 favorites - http://friendfeed.com/mitchel...
- Mitchell Tsai
i hope someone made it soon. DeviAntart is very good and attractive website

I'm off for some outside work. In the rain.
- BISQ
Andrew's right, it is good to get outside for a while sometimes. I took my son to Starbucks at about 8:00 just to sit and talk. Then, we all went with my wife for a school board meeting. We may go to the Y and work out for a bit later, but I'm glad to be home. I wish I had a bike.
- ha3rvey (needs soup)
already spent two hours in the yard, an hour at the pool and a family walk is forthcoming...I am due some screen time. :-)
- JA Castillo
When a certain manufacturer finally ships my scooter (looks pointedly at Q-Link), I will get plenty of outside air...unless the days of endless rain come back...and they probably will. Until then, grant me my screen time. It's the only thing that keeps me from curling up into a ball and crying about my scooter.

I just dedicate a certain amount of time and accept I can't read everything. Easy!

Indeed. It's scary how much sleep I've lost since I started surfing Friendfeed

I hit my top weight in 2005 and started going to Taekwondo (still didn't lose any weight). I started using Twitter last year and lost 30 pounds. No joke. Also, no correlation :D

"We are sorting ourselves out by choosing to live with people that we agree with," Bill Clinton quote from today. Is this true of FF community?
- Steven Cains
@cains: It's true of every community. The alternative: What, you're going to force me to be with people I DON'T like? Who gave you the power to choose for me? And what about freedom of association in the Constitution?
- Alexander Williams

This brings to mind a couple versus from R.Kipling: ... If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you; If all men count with you, but none too much, If you can fill the unforgiving minute With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it...
- Franklin Naval
What's wrong with being mediocre? Doesn't mean you can't do extraordinary things.
- Jim Kukral
from twhirl
It's not possible for everybody to like anyone. If everyone else in the world likes a person, then my husband will hate him/her.
- MiniMage TKDteacher of FF
If you always try to get everyone to like you and never say anything that expresses your true feelings for fear that someone might be offended does that mean you hate yourself?
- Guilty Party
Part of me really agrees with the quote, but part of me also thinks it's a load of crap. I think that if there's someone everyone likes, that person is probably hiding something or not allowing themself to be fully transparent. For me, I prefer total transparency - I want to know if I'm going to like you or hate you. Any middleground just wastes time and energy.
- Sam Dodge
I agree to a point. You have to have an opinion and stick up for that, but you can't just be generally abrasive.
- Jeremy Vaught
I was thinking about this some more Loic. I think this statement is bullshit propaganda tripe spouted by people who think being a dick is "interesting". No, it's just you being a dick. Being liked is a good thing. Let's not try to claim that good people are boring as you suggest.
- Jim Kukral
Asuming you're good, I think it's easy to be disliked and come across as arogant. It's far harder to be good and liked.
- Ben Metcalfe
from twhirl
There's no such thing as "everybody." There's nothing wrong with mediocre. Being hated does not mean you are more [interestng, intelligent, creative] etc. Being liked and being mediocre are factors independent of each other.
- Roxanne Darling
from twhirl
You can be liked by many people, but it is impossible to satisfy everyone. Sometimes you will bump into people that you don't like. I would say "If everybody likes you, you are not honest"
- Erno Hannink
yes that is 100% true unless you are an antagonizer. Notice Amanda Chapel is both intelligent and has people listening to her.
- Noah David Simon
To be a real jerk in social networking brings people to you. but it makes ur life a nightmare. I would prefer mediocrity

I got my twitter account back @NoahDavidSimon and I notice by not being there I still have around 1000 followers.
- Noah David Simon
by not tweeting I got a better share of listeners... but not really. I just didn't piss them off yet

"Hey you, guuuuuyyyys! A newly re-envisioned “The Electric Company” will begin lighting up PBS starting in January which, though different stylistically, will feature the same educational goal as its predecessor -- to encourage and teach children to read. The show’s creative team outlined a rough sketch of its updated version of the beloved children’s program in Beverly Hills Saturday morning, as part of the Television Critics Assn., a semiannual gathering of national television writers where networks preview their upcoming programming."

this show was too much for the soccer moms. bring it back! I like the violence. will Spiderman still be on it?
- Noah David Simon
Is Rita Moreno going to be part of this one as well?
- Helen Sventitsky
A new show like the original 'Electric Company' would never fly these days. Everything is far too sanitized and touchy-feely. When they started censoring Bugs Bunny cartoons and stopped showing the Three Stooges, I knew future generation of kids were doomed.
- Akiva Moskovitz
Electric Company, 3-2-1 contact and Great Space Coaster are three of the greatest shows of all time
- Marco(aureliusmaximus)
Oh, I hope it's still cool! PLEASEPLEASEPLEASE
- BISQ
Helen, no mention of Ms. Moreno, though with her being in her mid-70s now I doubt it.

That show was an experiment in the possibility of television being able to educate. You should see the DVD for the challenges they faced in the beginning.
- Eric @ CSTechcast.com
I'm guessing Morgan Freeman won't be reprising his role as Vincent the Vegetable Vampire. Yes, I'm that old.
- MiniMage TKDteacher of FF
MiniMage, in case no one has told you lately. You rock! I remember him as Easy Reader, but I had forgotten about Vincent the Vegetable Vampire.
- ha3rvey (needs soup)
Great to see, especially now that I have a five-year-old of my own... But can't think it will be the same without Oscar winners like Morgan Freeman and Rita Moreno
- Chris Reed
My early childhood education would have not have been complete with out many afternoons watching the original Electric Company. I think this is awesome. I wonder if the original is available in DVD format.
- James
James, there are definitely some "best of" DVDs for the original, not sure if the complete full series is available.
- Robert Seidman
I was a band geek, very creative, in Jazz, and very social. Got into trouble as a senior, broke a heart, had mine broken in return. I always though I'd be an architect, the internet was barely in the back of my mind, let alone the front.
- Jeremiah Owyang
I was a total geek in high school, and had a very very close circle of a few friends. I still have those friends, and am still pretty geeky, but have found my social side, which has helped me get to where I am.
- Michel Savoie
Quiet, not very sociable. Was never with the "in crowd". Somewhat of a geek, but more of a pre-computer era geek. Had plans to be a naval architect because my Dad was one, but that never panned out. Now I'm a Software QA Specialist for a global high-tech software corporation. Never would have predicted where I am today.
- Scott
I was a major geek. Do you remember that guy who got called to the principal's office to reset his digital watch every time DST began or ended? That was me. I could solve a Rubik's cube in just under a minute. And I played offensive guard on the football team. I always knew I'd be doing computer stuff, but I had no idea where it would take me. Didn't even hear about the internet until my first Unix class in college.
- ha3rvey (needs soup)
I was a total band geek (trumpet) as well. Sr. year, Youth Orchestra, Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Jazz Band and music theory. My favorite part (still) is improvisation. However, tech is my other passion and that's the direction I went.
- Ben Thomas
Class clown. Wanted to be Stephen King. Turned out to be a rodent who writes.

Can't describe myself in H.S. - I was too complex then. Yes, in some ways and No in others. I expected not to have to stay in the box I kept get putting in by my adolescent peers - and that came true. But the rest of my life is and has always been an unpredictable adventure.
- Lucretia Pruitt
Trumpet player and band geek champion. Artsy fartsy and theater dweeb. Always drawing on my notes and folders rather than paying attention in class. Didn't much care for the majority of my classmates but was lucky enough to be left alone by the bullies and jocks. Had no idea what I wanted to do in life but always trusted my gut and listened to my heart. Don't think I ever expected to be...

- David Murray
Lots of trumpet players, me Trombone, low brass section leader
- Jeremiah Owyang
When I look back at high school, I can't believe how eccentric I already was. Sure, a lot of it was typical teenage posing but some of it was astonishingly strange even then. I had always expected to pretty much be where I am now although I expected it to have happened sooner. The only thing I've not yet done is to have become a published author. It's been my lifelong dream since first grade that's constantly been the victim relegated by transient hobbies and computer programming. Need to get back on track.
- Akiva Moskovitz
I was fat but somehow one of the "popular" crowd, though I never felt like I belonged there...or anywhere. I was nicknamed Encyclopedia or Britannica. I was good at making people laugh, and used that as my primary survival skill. I had a horrendous home life, and always was desperate to escape. I hoped that I'd travel and live in other worlds, maybe even expected to. I am always amazed and glad that that's exactly what I am doing. Every day, I am astonished to be where I am. Very blessed.
- Jackie Danicki
I was a computer geek then and I still am now :-)
- Jason Herald
I was Gravy Dave, started an underground newspaper, led student strikes, smoked a lot of reefer and did lots of other drugs. Participated in student govt, ran for class president (lost), held a big rock concert, dropped out, went back, managed to get a bit of education in all that. It was a funny time, late 60s early 70s, that's actually the kind of stuff people were doing then, if you can believe it. Had my own apartment too. Got in a lot of trouble and made a bunch. I was one of the in crowd an a-lister.
- Dave Winer
In High School I was a Band nerd, Dungeons and Dragons nerd and generally shunned by nearly everyone. I was fortunate enough to have a few close friends, but high school was mostly a nightmare. I didn't really begin to become the person I am today until I decided in college that it was high time to have a girl friend and start a grown-up life. Back in high school I never would have thought I'd be a programmer today living in a nice house with a pool married to a beautiful nerdy woman.
- Internet's Tad
I was a total theater geek and bookish nerd ... and while career-wise the place I am now bears no resemblance to anything I'd imagined, from what I've been told by folks who've known me since I was a mere pup, I'm not all that different. Once a geeky-nerd ... always a geeky-nerd, I think ... and proud of it too!
- Cathy Brooks
I was very much a NON-techie and never imagined that I would someday "grow-up" to recruit technologists. I was pretty active in virtually every imagineable activity in school...played tennis for the school team, part of the weight-lifting team, Student Gov. VP in my Senior year. I had lots of friends and tended to mingle with a fairly eccletic crowd. I entered college, and pretty much replicated what I had accomplished in HS,...VP of SGA, Pres. of my Fraternity, etc. Life turned out good for me.
- Michael
Jeremiah, the funny thing is if you had told me I'd ever do anytihng with computers I'd have laughed. I really looked down on the kids who hung out in the computer lab at the school (we actually had one, even then). Never in a million years would I have guessed I'd go down that path.
- Dave Winer
Big athlete, smart but only top 20% student in class rank (put in some effort, kid!). Voracious reader, especially SciFi and Fantasy. Thought my career would take me toward sales or banking/business, but it turned out it took me right back to public education.
- BISQ
I probably do need to add that I was the only girl in Computer Club in high school tho - back then, I was a serious anomaly.
- Lucretia Pruitt
I think I'm the same now as I was in high school. I won "best personality" which is to say - I'm nice and can be a bit of a push-over. I just want other people to be happy. I never thought of myself as technical at all. I didn't start getting into tech until I worked at Wired.com. In fact, in high school I never would have thought I'd be into journalism. I got into that at UC Berkeley while majoring in philosophy.
- David Cohn
This one time at Band Camp... Actually I wasn't in the Band, but worse the War Games club. Fortunately, though I was in the nerd section, I hung out with the Football team and got to be in the "in crowd".
- Stephen Terlizzi
@davewiner I'm not sure it has anything to do with computers, just an independent spirit we've come to enjoy from you.
- Jeremiah Owyang
. academics nerd. excelled in English, history, philosophy, was on school newspaper , nights/weekend job at dept store as sales, model & stylist, eclectic fashionista that was outside current HS style. totally not in the right spot. HS was *boring*.. I hung out with friends who were 5-10 years older. went to big univ & didn't follow my dream-- but am now.
- Stevie
In high school I was a nerd. I loved technology and I love literature so it made sense that I would be involved in the Web with my writing. I was in high school in the mid nineties but I was one of the few kids with my own site and it was a poetry/literature site to boot. I never would have guessed that I would be doing plagiarism work, I had always seen myself as a future author, but I knew my future would involve the Web and writing in some way...
- Jonathan Bailey
School always got in the way of my education. I played football and helped establish radio station WJSV-FM
- paul mooney
Kinda disappointing, I don't see any of my friends from high school anymore. I never had a lot of friends, but we kinda split up after graduation.
- ha3rvey (needs soup)
Moderately accepted, but usually on the outside looking in. Moved around quite a bit back then, so didn't establish serious connections until late HS. Comic book geek, skinny with doofy glasses. Didn't care much for the "popular" crowd (though some were seriously cute) and eagerly awaited graduation and exodus. Did end up meeting my wife in HS and that was good! Thought of being an architect; improved upon that by becoming a Landscape Architect. :-)
- JA Castillo
Complete geek, stuck the deep south. Played in a local metal band. Got out as soon as I turned 18, never looked back.
- Neal Jansons
I'm commenting since I am still in high school. I'm on our band (includes marching and concert) in addition to jazz band and performed in the pit for Beauty and the Beast last year. I'm friends with the popular and unpopular kids and my best friend is a popular kid. I can (apparently) make people laugh and listen well. To be honest, I don't know what people see in me because I think I'm pretty boring most of the time. Life's a mystery. You just have to roll with it.
- Zach Flauaus
Attended high school for smarty/arty kids (no sports) & then performing arts school for theater. Lots of good friends, parties, etc. Thought I'd be an actress/singer very involved in politics. Not surprised I wound up in film production & now multimedia, but wound up on the corporate side of it by falling ass over teacups and finding I liked where I'd landed. That the corporation has anything to do with IT continues to amuse me on a daily basis as I'm lucky to get my laptop in the 'on' position.
- dfugate
Fat, shy, too smart for my own good with an unlikely group of friends made up of gay kids, straight kids, questioning kids, black kids, white kids, asian kids (and various mixtures of the three). In ROTC, secretly really into ROTC, and a fiendish facility with foreign languages. Was in Spanish Club, Latin Club, on the yearbook and newspaper staffs. Except for the ROTC part (though I still wish I'd gone into the Marines), and the clubs, I'm still pretty much the same.
- cecily
The answers here were fun to read. Not sure about the etiquette for commenting on friendfeed. I just do it when something is interesting even if I don't know the person. So my apologies if doing so is out of line. In high school I was pretty much the same in that regard. Much better at asking forgiveness than permission. The former provides so much opportunity for practice. I fully expected that I would be dead before now, but people are so forgiving!
- Boo
Harvey Simmons, if I'd known you in high school I would've had a huge crush on you. Football player and a geek? Be still my heart.
- cecily
High geek factor, although at the time (1985-1991) not because of computer skills, just the looks ;-) Nothing special during my high school years, better than average student, although I did not have much trouble getting the right grades. Spent all of my high school years playing competitive snooker, so I did not party, practiced and played tournaments each weekend. Did a lot of catching up in later years ;-)

interesting thread - i split my high school years between hawaii where i played football and tennis for the school and surfed ever swell & upstate new york where i played football & hockey and hung out w/ the physic geeks who were all musicians (i was not) - i had good grades, sat etc... & took classes at local college while still in hs, also hung out in their comp lab - mainframe w/ punch cards - i was an enigma, still am ;)
- mike "glemak" dunn
Hmmm.... high school... I was "different", that's for sure. I wasn't in any clicks, but I was always invertently starting new trends. I never really had any expectations as to where I would be in 20 years, but I didn't expect to have been a world traveler, nor hold down some of the jobs I've had. It's been an interesting ride!
- Dominique
If you like M@W, be sure to look into Colin Jame Hay's solo albums. His latest covers some early M@W stuff, and it's brilliant. "Waiting for my real life to begin" is wonderful.
- BISQ
Just got back from the art festival. A women stopped me from taking photos of her work. I obliged but am not really sure what the legal precedence is; anyone know? I know if I used a simple point and shoot she probably wouldn't have said a thing.
- Benjamin Golub
from Bookmarklet
nice, it just occurred to me that your posting a ff link to new flickr pictures is a much richer feed thumbnail than waiting for the flickr ff item.
- karl dotter
Cool stuff Ben! We were about to head out but then it started pouring rain!
- Susan Beebe
@Karl true; but I created this separate entry mainly to ask the legal question about photographing someone else's work in a public place.
- Benjamin Golub
"Not once does Jimmy mention the words "hot" or "sexy" in his comments about women online. Refreshing" absolutly.
- Nicole Simon
The author says she won't use Friendfeed unless they build sex discrimination into the recommendation algorithm.
- Andy Roberts
No, Andy, she's saying she wont' use FriendFeed until there is a true representation of actual users.
- Cyndy
@Cyndy wait, she won't use FriendFeed until there are more women on FriendFeed? Does not compute. (need to RTFA still).
- Nathaniel Payne
just one note to her post - if FF added a random style default option, then women and men would both show up though I don't know what percentage of people on FF are women.
- Allen Stern
Nathaniel, she's pointing out that the "most subscribed" list that's pre-populated is all men. It's going back to Allen's post about the stuffing of the ballot box.
- Cyndy
I don't think I subscribe to any of the most popular. I think the two most popular people I subscribe to are women: Ginger Makela and Edythe. Pick who interests you, and don't worry about what everyone else is listening too. Everyone subscribing to the same people just makes it like broadcast media. This is the new world and you can build your own channel (feed).
- RAPatton
Those words ARE shocking when it's right in your face...most people only say it behind closed doors
- Mona Nomura
I respect those who rise above it. Wake up each day, work and smile
- Charlie Anzman
i want to make a comment. i want to contribute, but i am having a hard time. Last Month in all the stadiums that the European Cup had matches there were huge black billboards that said "Stop Racism." billboards, expensive billboards in what generates lots of viewers, so its not just the internet- its everywhere- and it stinks.
- Nathan Eckenrode
@Mona Beleive it or not -- I'd rather have it in the open. Trust me.
- Shey, Jamaican of FF
@Nathan Racism in European soccer is horrendous -- I couldn't believe a presentation I saw on it.
- Shey, Jamaican of FF
@shey - I agree with the rather having it open. Your known enemy can be dealt with - it's tough when you find out people you consider peers, colleagues, and even friends don't reciprocate because of deep seeded, hidden racist leanings.
- George Smith
Shey-of course Sun Tzu said, "keep your friends close and your enemies closer." Sad how much ignorance still prevails in light of all the information available on the Net.
- Mark Forman
In some ways, yes. I heard about Loren's video and thought, there's another example of not understanding culture, history, sensitivities, even of being a racist. But I figured most people write that stuff off as yet another example of the change we need. Then I see what's on that screen from Wayne Sutton's webcast and it newly pisses me off. The cro-magnons coming out of their caves.
- Hutch Carpenter
Shey, just wanted to let you know I appreciate the voice you've brought to this. It's a shame to see those idiots hide behind anonymity, but that's the nature of the web and it just solidifies your points. Glad to see FF users rally in your support.
- Mark Krynsky
Wow, there's nothing subtle about those comments. It's shame that it's 2008 and you almost can't tell except for the fact that we have fancy tech toys. I find it depressing that no matter what we achieve in life, we still have to deal with this type of treatment and to add insult to injury people claim you are imagining it. I'm glad you documented this.
- Kenya
Thanks Kenya, I almost titled the post to make that point.
- Shey, Jamaican of FF
Charlie Anzman on your blog post sez, "I respect those who rise above it. Wake up each day, work and smile" I say meet it head on and smash into it. Until people have fear that they will be personally touched by being ass-clowns it will continue to propagate within "that" community. Reach out and touch someone is my motto...
- Tim Moore
Tim - This whole chapter has been as upsetting to me as many others. I wouldn't have commented unless I felt I had been and still am active in trying to be part of a solution rather than being pessimistic like many others. I think Shey knows why I'm right here. I'd hope so anyway.
- Charlie Anzman
I deal with it almost every time I'm on my live stream. I "moderate" my chat often to remove them from the experience. I agree with Charlie in that I take the high road and don't feed the trolls, I simply remove them from the equation. All the while I don't get upset because it's not worth the stress. I couldn't deal with Yahoo live, the moderation tools are horrible compared to Ustream's (IRC)
- Bwana ☠
Despise it but also in a quandary - reality is that someone pathetic enough to say some of the things that have been said is desperately demanding 1 thing - attention. Don't know this feldman guy - comments from Corvida and Wayne's cast were anonymous cowards - part of me feels like every second of attention I pay to anyone with no respect for others (and by extension themselves) is 1 second more than they deserve - even if I am denouncing them. (sry need to cont)
- Marco(aureliusmaximus)
...I once heard this quote "the opposite of love isn't hate - its apathy" the disdain I feel for individuals so insecure that they feel they need to exercise their right to free speech or create their "art" at the expense of others is so deep that I want to strike them with the hardest blow I can: to ignore their very existence. Please don't take these thoughts to an extreme - def believe that we need to stand up and defend wonderful people like Corvida and Wayne against insecure slime
- Marco(aureliusmaximus)
Mona N, these people were making their comments behind closed doors. I've seen this on lots of sites and forums. Try Justin.tv or stickam.com. The slurs on those sites, especially on the broadcast chats of black people or asian people is just sickening. Shey is right. It's better to have this out in the open and computers do that, so we can all see how big this problem is. Remember, these people ARE in their own homes. This is what they think in their daily lives in the privacy of their bedrooms and dens.
- Paul Short
not sure what to say about this other than you have my support. It's an ugly thing, but it's definitely out there.
- Nathan Rein
Thank you Shey. It's become apparent to me over time that Louis and I are alike in many ways. Desensitized? Between this dialog and the Congressional vote today, I was seriously upset reading the through the threads tonight. Better days ahead my friend. No gloom and doom from this guy.
- Charlie Anzman
Wow, that's brutal. It really breaks my heart to see people acting so horribly. It's really frustrating because there is so little that can be done. In fact, this is one of the challenges with social media: when people are shrouded by pseudonyms, it gives them full immunity from social capital.
- Clay Newton
Addendum to my above comment - also a lot of these people are kids, 14 or 16 year olds and this is how they learn from their friends or even parents to look at the people around them. Sad. Anyone who thinks racisim doesn't exist on a large scale needs to see this sort of thing and not be so complacent in ignoring it's existance.
- Paul Short
I recently worked on the Wimbledon campaign which involved posting highlights and interviews to our youtube channels. I was shocked and horrified by the comments people make in this vein. I guess, I live in a bubble. I just can't relate at all. I think the only way to combat it is with complete intolerance. We have to make people feel like they need to go into dark corners to talk like this and NEVER accept the slightest of infractions.
- gfox
Shey, I'm here as well to add my voice of support. I left a comment on Louis' post and I echo the same message that we need to shine a spotlight on this type of ignorant racist behavior. It's out there and we need to do what we can stand against it. Thank you for activating this discussion.
- Larry Kless
Char limits are a bitch, but here's a start: I played basketball at a high level until my frosh year of college when I blew out my knee. Before that, I played year round, including the big club/aau tourneys every summer in Vegas. Often, I was the only "whiteboy" on my team. As early as 8th grade, my teammates insisted I call them "nigga;" the "dude"s and "man"s I relied on as a kid from the SoCal burbs made them really uncomfortable. How should *I* react to the claim that anyone using that word is a racist?
- Ryan MF
To clarify: I'm not suggesting that because some 14 year olds from Long Beach insisted that I call them that in 2000, that I have the inalienable right to use it at my whim for all eternity, nor am I trying to center this discussion on myself. What I'm saying is that I'm not the only member of my generation who has had experiences like mine. These strange subtleties and variations are going to make this conversation more complicated, not less, as time goes on.
- Ryan MF
May we never become desensitized to racism, for when we stop feeling outrage at this type of behavior, we've lost the very essence of our humanity. I believe that Wayne Sutton and Corvida are strong and hope that they know that this "exposed" hatred has us all scratching our heads tonight. I'm so saddened when I think that there are people who are so addicted to hate that live in it 24hrs/ day. My prayer is that they will someday come to know what love is, for obviously they are blind to it.
- michael sean wright
Ryan, you have to look at the bigger picture here. Look up the contextual usage and the history of N-word. You asked how should you react to others using that word? Negatively. It's a word, regardless of Black usage, that SHOULD NOT be used, especially by non-Blacks.
- Shey, Jamaican of FF
A small, heartening counternote: @owillis honors an American hero who gave up his job rather than honor the racist Jesse Helms. http://snurl.com/2w805 -
- Michael Markman
Growing up in Chicago I saw a *ton* of it but not so much after I joined the AF. Haven't been exposed to much of it for 8 years until I was playing COD4 on my 360. A white guy started bashing a black guy with the N-Bomb and then he started using it right back. It went on for about 5 min straight and I had to bail on the game. So I guess the answer is no. I got pissed off! I just can't believe it still exists in 2008.
- David Cook
Just looking at that chatlog at the end says it all. It's truly disgusting what people can say, especially considering this was direct to their face.
- CannonGod
I got as far as "diapers for baby twins," but am a little stymied working the "Love Ewe" into that. The first cloned animal was a sheep, but that's a bit of a stretch...
- Karim
how to get umbilical cord blood stain out of suspenders
- edythe
Something Java-related, talking about Thread.suspend() and Object.clone()?
- Tudor Bosman
Court suspends injunction against cloning? I know not as funny, but probably more realistic.
- Kevin L
Ha, that's nothing! I have a single email with sidebar ads for "How do I Astral Project?", "Gites for rent Pyrenees", "Aromatase Problems?", "Auditing for Lotus Notes", and "Glog yourself every day" among others. Gites? Aromatase? Glog?
- Gabe
ads in Gmail (opposite to rest of Google assets) always made me vomitizing - just few strings of Russian, and there is already some preaching on right sold me... feedback to Gmail team that their relevancy is not only worst, but also drives me away, as well requests to skip certain topics - obviously were ignored - Google goes slowly down Yahoo road
- A.T.
I've long concluded that the ads in gmail are included for our merriment to boost Google's brand appeal. They can't be for revenue, can they?
- Michael Markman
Haha interesting ads! Sometimes gmail ads are crazy..
- Saad Kamal
Gmail ads are the number one complaint I get from my friends. I wish we would just shut them off. Gmail has value far beyond ad revenue.
- Josh Wills
You're friends are crazy Josh :). The ads always brighten my day...
- Paul Buchheit
Gmail ads are fun. And sometimes even useful =) Anyway, as long as it doesn't flash Flash at me, I don't care much
- Cozy geta
Baby stuff, nothing very interesting (or related to the ads).
- Paul Buchheit
@paul and @jlam-- my girlfriend was pretty pissed (and I was slightly concerned) when Gmail showed her an ad for fungal cream on the web clips bar. I could do without the hassle. :)
- Josh Wills
2001: "don't be evil" 2008: "don't be reminding girlfriends about their yeast infections"
- Karim
Gmail ads aren't entertaining enough. Heaven knows they aren't useful. And they appear completely at the wrong time -- when you're reading a message, even though the time they might possibly be useful is when you're writing one. But ads that update as you type... too weird. :-(
