Get some colour and come graphics in there. ;-)

Does that case come with the Kindle? Looks nice.
- Benjamin Golub
Pure pleather-like goodness: http://www.amazon.com/Amazon-.... The case has a clever little hook mechanism that makes it easy to pop the Kindle in and out, but you can definitely use the Kindle with the case on. Feels and looks more like a book with the case on, plus it protects the screen. They say it is real leather, which is a shame, as it feels like pleather and frankly I'd rather it was fake.
- DeWitt Clinton
Can you please check if it shows UTF-8 characters? Like my name?
- Vinay | विनय
I am starting to get pretty excited about those... was pretty skeptical at first, but that is going to be a game changer.
- Susan Beebe
@Michael - I had never heard of it. But I'll admit that, off all the things I wished my Kindle could do, fold in half was not one of them. And this may sound like heresy, but I'm not sure the high-level OS stack is the limiting factor in of ebook readers. Give me more surface area (Kindle DX size), a thinner bezel, higher resolution and maybe color, ditch the keyboard (okay, so maybe an touchscreen IME would help), a brushed aluminum body, and keep the thickness and weight constant, and you have an upgrade.
- DeWitt Clinton
Ugh. It's like 1993 all over again. Whoever can figure out how to make high resolution, eInk screens in color, not necessarily with a rapid refresh rate, will pretty much own this device space for a while.

Now, now, Jeff. I mentioned in the article that I typically prefer native apps or Web apps to AIR apps, but this one is very interesting, at least to me. I dig it.
- Louis Gray
im just trying to be funny...hehe good post btw.
- (jeff)isageek
ah! and I was wondering why my twitter vanity search hit on that topic as I do not like the air apps. but grouping actually would be a reason to try it out. problem: as long as twitter decimates the request rates it is unreliable, but a first step in the right direction. will download it now ;)
- Nicole Simon
Louis, I think you're right - there is still innovation happening around Twitter, fortunately. The fact is there is still a huge audience on Twitter and that audience still has the potential to be monetized. I'm even building something around Twitter at the moment. There is still that threat though, that developers could leave if Twitter keeps neglecting them - it's in the back of the mind
- Jesse Stay
"feels" like Twhirl. Wish it had FF support...if it does it wasn't obvious from the website. I agree with others that I'd really like to see these Adobe air apps with some better skins

"Now, now, Jeff. I mentioned in the article that I typically prefer native apps or Web apps to AIR apps, but this one is very interesting, at least to me." - That's part of why I like the platform so much. Most people like native apps but AIR apps are pretty easy to build so there's bound to be a few that people really like. (Ryan - rstewart@adobe.com)

Roll call...this can be great if we all participate. Add yourself to this shared map. I created a placemark on the 2 major intersections near where I live.
- Mark Krynsky
Mo, I'm a newb to the shared maps stuff, but I turned on collaboration and allowed anyone to edit the map. There should be an edit button and then you can add a placemark.

Robert bought me a new house in the northern suburbs.

@Bec...nice. You are the first brave female on here.

Cool idea, Mark! I was thinking something like this would be fun the other day. Duly added myself - or at least the nearest big intersection. ;)

- Neal Jansons
@Neal yea, we really need a FriendFeed meetup. I might be up there for Web 2.0 in March...or we can have one at SXSW if a large number of us are going. Let's plan and get the Upcoming page going.
- Mark Krynsky
@Mark Not gonna make SXSW, but am definitely down for working on an FF get together. March is long enough away to make sure plenty of people have time to plan ahead. I added you on Upcoming so we can start coordinating it. Anyone else interested/want to help set this up?
- Neal Jansons
Maybe we can talk Paul & Bret into letting us invade the FF offices for a meetup in conjunction with Web 2.0? That would be sooooo cool!

Recently my cousin's head was run over by a car. This is what's left of her helmet. My cousin completely survived because of this helmet. Please think of this before riding a bike without a helmet next time!
This happened to a friend of mine at the beginning of the month. He didn't do so good in the accident, but the helmet obviously saved his life. Thankfully is on his way home tomorrow: http://www.caringbridge.org/visit...
- Steve Lacey
I used to ride my bike without the helmet even though it is mandatory in Chennai, India. But after reading this I am not even going to the next street in my bike without helmet.
- Sudar
I never wear a helmet. When hearing things like this, I always think of this article.http://news.bbc.co.uk/1.... In the Netherlands no one wears a helmet. It seems safe to me.
- Peter Stuifzand
I was hit while riding to work in summer 2006 & did not want anyone to touch my helmet at all costs. If my brain was scrambled, I did not want anyone to touch my egg:) I highly recommend a helmet especially if you think you will not need one! Mine was almost the same color too & manufacturer, but there is no conspiracy there:)
- Roney Smith
Bicyclists/motorcyclists that don't wear helmets are better called future organ donors

Thanks for sharing. I ride often at traffic time between cars. always wear my helmet...itsg good to know that It does work :)

Wow, glad to hear your friend is doing well after that. I agree, helmets save lives. Regardless, I've many intentional close-calls by drivers who don't want to share the road. Unfortunately, this is the common attitude where I live (southern US).
- pete
we wear helmets for everything: mtb, snowboarding, wakeboarding, skateboarding & even surfing - skulls are fragile why not put a protective layer around it (i also try real hard to not ride on streets - a high percentage of drivers are oblivious to bike riders)...
- mike "glemak" dunn
I always ride in my helmet and stay to bike lanes as much as possible. Nice to know the safety tools work. Now, if I can just avoid that NYPD cop with a penchant for knocking people off their bikes. Hopefully, he won't transfer to LAPD.

Peter Stuifzand, my cousin would be dead if she did not wear her helmet. That article is BS. Wear your helmet!
- Jesse Stay
from twhirl
Point blank. You are a moron if you ride without a helmet. Sorry, but that's true and you're just going to play into Darwinian theory should you continue to ride without one. Any 'real' cyclist (e.g - you've been hit by a car - and yes, I have been) will tell you this without reservation. Helmets work without a doubt.
- AJ Kohn
I survived a nasty motorcycle crash in my youth and would also be dead without that helmet - which cracked in 2 like an egg (that would have been my head, as the nurse aptly put it!).
- Susan Beebe
A friend who's a cop refers to motorcycles as donorcycles whenever she sees someone riding without a helmet. I figure that applies for bicycles, too.
- ha3rvey (wants confit)
I was on the way to work Monday morning while it was raining, when the third car in front of me spun out of control and flipped twice into a ditch. When I pulled over to help her out she was just fine. She only had a scratch on her left shoulder from the broken window and was not hurt anywhere else. THE REASON: She was wearing her seat belt. It's nice to hear that these devices are actually helping us!
- David Cook - 2010!!!
Awesome. I ride my bike to work everyday and I see a lot of people with no helmets on. I don't know how they do it.
- Clint Ecker
Wow! I wear mine! Didn't for years - I was lucky I guess. Thanks for posting that!
- matthew hunt
OMG... Jesse, do you have a link other than here on FF? I have friends whose kids refuse to wear theirs, and seeing this may help.
- Cyndy
If it's nice enough to ride, I probably won't be bothering with the human-powered bike any longer. I always wear a helmet on my gas-powered bike.
- MiniMage TKDteacher of FF
As long as we won't have mountains, we Dutch will not wear those things. Otherwise we won't be able to recognise the tourists on bikes.
- Ton Zijp
Thanks for sharing - I had a mishap with a car, wasn't wearing a helmet at the time, was lucky. If they don't see you, it doesn't matter either way. Wear the helmet!
- Rick Bucich
This isn't as extreme as this but when I fell off my bike onto a sidewalk and broke my arm, I thought I was fine for a while. Later, my dad noticed that the whole front of my helmet was all scratched up and the visor in front was torn off! I realized that if I wasn't wearing my helmet on the 2 minute trip down the road, I probably wouldn't be typing this comment right now! Not that I'd be dead but I would have suffered some head damage, limiting my ability to do most things.
- Kevin Lyons
Helmets for cyclists are mandatory in Australia. Still gives me the shudders when I'm travelling and see bareheaded bicyclists on the roads.
- Kate Foy
I had heard about something like this a while back. I try to do it as much as I can but jackalopes are always cutting in the space. Oh well.
- CAJ, somewhere else
Continue what you are doing Curtis. Don't mind those jackalopeseses
- AJ Batac
This philosophy collapses when you have real gridlock though; if all the lanes are clogged with stopped (or very slow moving) traffic and you try to employ this technique, you just end up pissing off the cars trapped behind you because you are going 5mph while everyone else is going 10.
- Phil G
Try that on british motorways and you'll find forty lorries and assorted 4x4's filling the intervening space. Most traffic jams would be avoided (except where sheer volume of traffic is the cause) if everyone left a two-second gap between them and the car in front - whatever speed they're doing - and don't brake unnecessarily
- Slappy Line
It's simply courteous and defensive driving. There should be space between cars for safety. And there's no reason to close ranks to not allow others in. We're all going in the same direction with the same goal. If you'd like others to be courteous, always be courteous yourself.
- ·[▪_▪]·
Living in LA has totally colored how I drive now. I remember going back home to SD to see my folks and I was agog at how much more aggressive I'd become. :(
- Derrick
It's not cheating, it's just optimal timing :-)
- Todd Hoff
It's the rocket scientist like this that causes wrecks behind him and road rage. Slower traffic keep right is the law (for good reason). He demonstrates why he should stay in the far right lane, go about his business, and stop trying to "fix all of the traffic around him". What an ego.
- Robert Kenney
the most important part is really the end, where he says how this style of driving is actually calming and altruistic instead of infuriating and selfish.... geez, if everything felt that way we'd have less problems once people got out of their car, all frustrated and pissy.
- Ňicķ
Actually, on British motorways they have variable speed limits (for example, on the M25 around London). They found out that, if they lower the speed limit (sometimes as low as 20-30 MPH), they can keep traffic moving; however, if they keep the speed limit high, they get a seriously bad traffic jam. It was interesting to watch.
- Glen, Bespectacled Elder
I received a 404 error. There seems to be a traffic jam on the server as well.
- Louis Trapani
from iPhone
It's kind of obvious.. stop and go causes problems (and wrecks), even if it does take you longer, it doesn't FEEL longer because you aren't gas/break/gas/break, so less stressful drive. On the flip side, you think this guy driving slow (and not keeping the traffic pace) will cause someone else to slam him in the rear?
- Tim Hoeck
It might cause more disruption with cars behind him moving into the other lane to pass him. Honestly, I can't stand drivers who leave a huge gap in front during a traffic jam. Josh, it's basically just extending a tripod and holding it in the middle :) http://www.youtube.com/watch...
- Rodfather
Interesting: "Governor Bush vetoed 2005 SB732, which would have reserved the left lane for passing, saying that drivers blocking the left lane are 'cautious and careful.'" - from "State keep right laws" http://www.mit.edu/~jfc...
- Micah Wittman
So, his basic tactic, albeit in a single lane, is similar to what I see highway patrol officers do when they want to SLOW DOWN traffic -- the highway patrol car swerves back and forth from fast to left to right lane and back and forth, lights ablazing, effectively doing two things -- creating a BIG GAP between the cop car and the rest of the traffic in front of him, and second SLOWS...
- Pete Delucchi
A few people already mentioned it above, but let me also say that this technique will not work in heavily trafficked roads. I've spent time in cities like Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, Bangkok and you just can't leave a large gap between you and the car in front of you. First they will get filled by other cars really really quickly, and second you will just piss off the cars behind you.
- Andre P. Siregar
My wife and I debate this, because I sometimes do this myself. Stop and go traffic seems silly, when throughput would be higher if people left enough space between cars to absorb some of the braking. The website at http://trafficwaves.org/ is interesting, especially the link to http://www.ur.umich.edu/0304... that claims single-lane jams would be radically reduced if >=20% of cars had adaptive cruise control.
- Matt Cutts
kinda like why people are requested to exit in an orderly fashion during a fire. The only hindrance to this is getting over the feeling of being taken advantage of by the jackasses who ignore the order. But no pain no gain and you have to live with that for the greater good.
- vijay
I practice a type-A version of this in non-stop-and-go traffic, I'd call "driving Parkour", basically, I tend to drive over the speed limit, but I leave large gaps, and when I need to slow down, I avoid hitting my brakes and try to led friction/drag slow my car down before I have to hit my breaks. I look far ahead and try to plot out if I need to switch lanes in order to maintain speed...

- Ray Cromwell
Clarkson eluded to this in his unique crass manner, don't brake and drive clever. Save everyone money.
- Toby Graham
the biggest cause of traffic jams are the idiots who don't get in lane and bimble along in the middle lane without any plan to actually overtake anyone. I've seen people when there has been nothing on the inside lane and yet they won't pull into it as they should. This is even more obvious when you consider that articulated lorries aren't allowed to drive in the outside lane, meaning...

This is actually an impressive use of game theory/backward induction to determine an optimal strategy. If this guy isn't a mathematician or work for the highway department, he should be.
- Mark Trapp
i do the same here in Rome/Italy since 1998
- alex
Well we can't get people not to talk hands free or text while driving, so I have to think it has to be impossible to get people to adopt/understand.
- Matt Soreco
Great to see this taken up again - I've been doing this since I first read his site years ago...
- Kevin Marks
I always keep lot of room in front of my car for my safety but I think it takes lot of room and creates longer line.
- ashish
While the line may be longer the actual distance you travel isn't any greater; you use less gas; your breaks will last longer; you're less likely to be involved in a crash and in fact it has an almost negligible affect on your travel time. Yes it is "slower" but on my 50 mile commute the difference is maybe a couple of minutes.
- Eoghann Irving
I agree Eoghann Irving. Wish everybody thought like this.
- ashish
+1 Pete Delucchi. I do agree it's probably better for your mental health to drive this way. Assuming you don't mind the "insult" of everybody cutting into to your lane.
- Matsis
Drivers behind me may get annoyed but there is always room at the front ;)
- ashish
I used to drive like this, until my commute changed to one that had more traffic lights. Then I realized that letting cars in front of me didn't make 1 second per car difference, it could make 10's of minutes, because I'd often miss traffic light cycles. I wish it wasn't the case - I guess it's going to depends on your commute.
- Nick Lothian
for the most part this will work; unless you're in the NYC area or such.
- clarke thomas
Glen, unfortunately, variable speed limits on the motorways here in the UK don't actually work as well as you might think. During heavy traffic, most drivers look up at the sign as it changes from 50 to 40 and think "If only". The other problems are the speed cameras in those areas - we have two types. To avoid being caught by the normal cameras, drivers zoom between cameras at 80+mph...

If you want to import your Facebook status, you must have "Allow friends to subscribe to my status" checked on the "Status Updates" custom privacy setting at http://www.facebook.com/login.... This is the default, but a few people have customized it away.
I think that's fine JA. They key is to have the "Allow friends to subscribe to my status" checkbox checked (the one right above the red bar in the second screenshot). That dialog appears when you select "Customize..." from the "Status Updates" pulldown on the first screenshot.
- Paul Buchheit
Wow, that totally fixed my issue. Thanks, Paul (and FriendFeed)!
- Mark Trapp
Sorry - this doesn't work. I have that box checked. Unimpressed.
- Mathew
Matthew, Facebook has been through at least one major redesign since this entry was posted on 21st October. Anyone help Matthew in getting his FB imported in FF?
- Kol Tregaskes
Kol is correct, Facebook has changed their interface since these instructions were posted. Unfortunately, they seem to have eliminated the "Status Updates" RSS feed entirely. If you can find it, let me know.
- Paul Buchheit
The feed itself can't be gone - people who added it to FriendFeed before Facebook's UI changed are still having updates pulled in here. But as far as finding it now to add it...I've been unsuccessful. And modifying the URL of a working feed doesn't seem to work, either.
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
Yes, the RSS feeds still exist at some level, but the UI for discovering their secret urls seems to have been removed.
- Paul Buchheit
I'd love to know what the FFers think about all the changes that Facebook seems to be doing lately.

FB is making all this hoopla recently just because they finally "opened" up to 3rd party apps, and they take away the rss feed to our status updates.

I hope they don't spoil it for us. I just want to keep coming to Friendfeed.com

If they had no plans of shutting down FriendFeed and rolling features into Facebook they would have said so right away to avoid speculation and to reassure FF users. I am trying not to be suspicious, but I am.

Maybe now we'll be able to integrate Facebook feed with FF & twitter
- Justin Long
Faceborg...Googlebook...time to move back to StumbleUpon? Guess we should have seen this coming when FriendFeed got integrated into FeedBurner.

This interview is pretty funny... the person interviewing sounds like he just wants to ask questions for the sake of asking questions...;-) ... thanks for the insightful interview but..
- Sherif Mansour
In the interview, it was said that FriendFeed was not in immediate danger and could have continued for a number of years on their own. I'm not quite sure if that is true, because FriendFeed didn't develop their own business model.
- Rishabh Mishra (p248)
About integrating the social graphs, my social networks on FF and FB had different purposes. I don't have any friends on FB whom I haven't personally met, whereas I subscribe to some people I don't know on FF just because their feeds are interesting. On a related note, the FB graph is undirected and the FF graph is directed.

"tremendous opportunity" is so vague. Opportunity for who? What opportunity exactly? Or is it just the opportunity to allow the friendfeed employees who weren't already rich to get rich?

Laura: it's every engineer's dream to change the world of 300 million people instead of a few hundred thousand people. That's why this is a tremendous opportunity.

Because just like in high school, sometimes the sweaty jock who doesn't wash his hands after using the john still gets the best girl - while those of us who carried her books and wrote her poetic love letters and timed our walking to go by her locker at just the right time find ourselves on the outside looking in again." You nailed it Louis!
- Steve
Nice post, Louis. Was waiting to see what you'd write. :)
- Kali
My immediate reaction was Facebook will push ads onto their users. I think FriendFeed could be seriously screwed up with live moving ads, so that's hopefully out of the picture from a purely usability view. Friendfeed is all about realtime web information. I then wonder how in that case will the monetise the relationship. My guess? Facebook will show live conversations and hopefully they will rip out the poor IM implementation in Facebook. The purchase may be nothing more sinister, I hope...
- Mark Aitken
Well said Louis. This is the big question.
- Mark Krynsky
Okay, so now I'm ready to cry. Excellent post, Louis. Thank you!
- Ladybug Heather
Excellent, you've captured my sentiment very well. Mark - I disagree. FF is an excellent platform for floating ads based upon our behavior, and it is just about the only platform in existence where the algorithms for ad placement could have been done right - and welcomed.
- jcunwired
Louis's reaction is the one I most wanted to see. Thanks for not disappointing us, man!
- Daniel J. Pritchett
"FriendFeed is the one that has a 4.0 GPA and had big dreams of an Ivy League diploma. And yet, she ends up with you - the Silicon Valley equivalent of your local state school. I just learned about this minutes ago. Louis it's not 4 big companies. there will only be three after Microsoft merges/acquires Facebook and Google buys Twitter. I agree with Sheryl. We'll be watching. In my very quick Tweet earlier, I said this really narrows the choices and flings the door wide open for disruptive competition. In many ways, I see this as proof positive that the winner in the battle royale for microblogging (orwhatever we choose to call this services) is Company X, as yet a sleeper who will disrupt the landscape significantly.I don't think it will be a known player. At least not one known in this space.
- Ken Camp
Louis - that post is awesome... I just laughed out load with that one... nice!!!
- Susan Beebe
I had suggested facebook to buy friendfeed in one my blog post.
- Madhav Tripathi
Terrific article Louis, best I have read on this deal so far.
- Nicholas Kreidberg
Life streaming via Friendfeed I always felt like a kind of a partner investing something of me in something greater... Now I discover that this investment counts for nothing. No one was or is committed to keep the style and special features that made Friendfeed attractive in the first place. No one is committed or loyal to the user base and the investment of life talent and prestige...

"FF connected me with new friends that I would never have known. FB connects me with old friends I could have done without. :(" - jcunwired http://friendfeed.com/jcunwir...
its actually quite easy to ignore someone you could have done without. *sigh*
- Sidney
Wow. Some of you apparently live terrible lives, filled with terrible people you seem unable to avoid, with the possible exception of this one website, I feel terrible about that.Of course, it's also possible you've wildly overestimated the difference between the people you know here and the people who know you in real life.
- Richard Lawler
Nope, you're the ones who keep saying everyone you know and everything you do on facebook sucks. That must be terrible.
- Richard Lawler
Yes Richard because clearly I can make friends from all over the world on my daily stroll through the park. Or not.
- vijay
Richard: That there's a possible incompatibility between networks centered around personal relationships -- or at least people you've physically encountered -- and networks based largely on interests, seems pretty clear to me.
- Christopher A Carr
Richard: I suppose there's nothing stopping you from deleting your ff account now and heading on over to Facebook full-time.
- Christopher A Carr
I like this post, but I love all my social networks equally lol.
- Ryan Peach
Luckily, unlike so many here, I can keep using any website I want the same way I did before without devolving into a baseless bitchfest about what might happen someday somewhere. Or, I could have kneejerk reaction based on irrational fear. hmmm
- Richard Lawler
And you're very good at keeping your assumptions to yourself
- Bwana ☠
Richard: Were friendfeed to say that it's going to survive, or at least that FB will have a more open, public facing side to it as a result of the acquisition, then I think the bitching would subside. As it stands, there's not much reason to think that anything of friendfeed will survive. If Facebook perfectly met everyone's needs, there would be no friendfeed.
- Christopher A Carr
On the bright side, I can have a kneejerk reaction on FB and remove baseless bitches from my friends list. :)
- jcunwired
Except, they haven't really said anything. So thinking anything will or won't survive is premature. If Facebook perfectly met everyone's expectations there would be no need for war, sickness or evil deeds. Every online community is the same as every other one, if friendfeed, for whatever reason, doesn't keep doing what you want ti to do, you'll use something else. It hasn't ever been perfect and it never will be.
- Richard Lawler
I told you Richard. You're wrong. "Taylor and Cox say that the Friendfeed product will live on independently, and eventually Friendfeed will be merged into Facebook. But the Friendfeed team is not being kept whole. Some employees will now report to Cox, others to engineering head Mike Schroepfer. In my opinion that means, long term, the Friendfeed product itself is unlikely to be a big priority." http://www.techcrunch.com/2009...
- Bwana ☠
Well, you told me what techcrunch's opinion is, because that's what I wanted to know. Thanks! (there's sarcasm there)
- Richard Lawler
Ok let me slow it down for you. The team is splitting. The product is going to merge with Facebook. (No sarcasm)
- Bwana ☠
Richard: "Every online community is the same as every other one..." That's nonsense.
- Christopher A Carr
I can wholly identify with JC's statement.
- JA Castillo
Wow Bwana...you are really bitchy in this thread...I think Richard is making some good points. If you are having issues with the people you 'accept' on Facebook there really is only one person who you can point the finger. You. Facebook makes it quite easy to NOT get involved with any person.
- Sidney
I accept friends in Facebook because if they took the time to want to be friends with me, I feel obligated. I'm also not one to hurt a person's feelings by turning them down. That's what its like in a closed community like Facebook. Friendfeed is totally open - I can read, share, participate and like without having any obligation whatsoever to the people I interact with.
- jcunwired
Sidney - Refusing to see that there is a clear difference between the people and the atmosphere of Facebookers and Friendfeeders is either foolishness or stubbornness. There is a world in facebook, full of garbage, that people think is "ok" because it evolved from other crap.
- Matthew DeVries
You are probably right. I am checking things out only now
- AbZ
from Nambu
There is the matter of censorship too. You really have to post some very illegal crap before FF will step in a mod it. Facebook bounces you for saying breastfeeding.
- Matthew DeVries
I couldn't have put it better myself. Just got back and saw the news. Still digesting it.
- Charlie Anzman
Actually, I love most of my Facebook friends, or I wouldn't have (re)connected. But FF is a different community.
- Glen, Bespectacled Elder
Dont twitter groups achieve a similar effect?
- AbZ
from Nambu
I like Facebook friends, I don't like that think it's ok to kidnap me, poke me, or ask me what Fantana girl I'm most like. I don't like that they think I'm the misanthropic curmudgeon with the problem when I ask them not to "It's what Facebook is for"
- Matthew DeVries
It's interesting to see ho people use different networking sites - for example - I use FB for personal connections and family and the rest are business related.
- Graham Bunting
I like my friends, but you are definently right. I just got on friendfeed any advice on making friends?

Michael, a friend who had cancer asked one friend to be the go-to for updates, news, well wishes, etc., because it really is exhausting answering everyone's questions, hearing their concerns, soothing them and yourself (not that these things aren't done out of love and concern). Before you're into your treatment, you might want to talk about this w/ a friend or family member who might fill this role for you.
- Ayşe E.
That's an excellent idea since I have no idea how I'll be feeling in the coming weeks and months. Thanks!

My husband just went through treatment for leukemia, and he blogged his way through the experience. Some days he couldn't do it, but when he did it was wonderful for everyone involved. This reminds me of the index in PRIMOS user manuals. The entry for "circular reference" is "see recursion". The entry for "recursion" is "see circular reference". (PRIMOS is the operating system used on Prime Computers in 70's and early 80's)
- Gary Burd
Gary, I haven't used PRIMOS since like 8th grade. I love that someone else remembers PRIMOS. I learned on a PRIMOS system before I went to college and discovered Unix.

Good stuff. Note though that (at least for me), you don't get the easter egg from following the link. You have to post the query from the search page itself. Then, BINGO. Also, well played, Tanath :)

The Orion theme is sweet, although the centering of the image makes it so that the most dynamic parts of it are hidden behind the actual feed. Maybe make the feed area background semi-transparent?
- Brian Chang
wow, this second batch of themes kicks ass
- chrisofspades
Kevin mentioned it to me the other day, but I don't remember now where he said he found it. When he is around again I'm sure he'll chime in.

The NASA Orion pic is a mosaic of several Hubble pictures. I found it via this blog post: http://www.bittbox.com/resourc... and got the actual source from Wikimedia from this page: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki... I could tell you how to spot the artifacts that show this to be a mosaic, but if I did, you'd always notice them and you would be sad.

Yeah, but it's Generation X's fault that we have to look at all those "Y"s... We(they?) started it. (I get a little confused. I'm 30, so which side of the fence am I really on?)

Kamilah, I'm in the same boat. 31, and every definition says I fall between the X and Y cracks. Which, in light of this post, kinda grosses me out.

WAAAAAAAAA.. meta real time search.. love the concept of embed a real-time search !! Way to Team FF -- luv u guys !! :)-
- Peter Dawson
Do you guys sleep? Honestly, love the constant output and attention you guys pay to user feedback. I know this highly requested and probably not easy to implement.
- Frankie Warren
@Jesse: It's a dead twitter command "track keyword" sends you realtime updates whenever the word is used. Think of it like realtime google alerts for friendfeed.
- Daniel J. Pritchett
I'm pretty sure Gillmor et al kept calling it "track" because that's what Twitter called it back when they had it for a week.
- Daniel J. Pritchett
On a related note, live embeddable searches mean that I can hack together my own FF embeds for the pages that don't have them yet, like say "comment:dpritchett" http://friendfeed.com/search...
- Daniel J. Pritchett
Daniel, Twitter never had this - this isn't "track"
- Jesse Stay
The blogpost said they're working to implement "keyword notifications" Jesse, that will be "track"
- Frankie Warren
Twitter's brought back track, it's just no one cares. You can now have updates by keyword on Twitter pushed to you, via XMPP, just like track used to. Gillmor says that's not track.
- Jesse Stay
That's why I hate the term "track" - no one knows what it is. The way Paul is explaining it, as real-time search, is a much better way of explaining it.
- Jesse Stay
I guess we're still missing the realtime notifications piece that folks want. You can shape the firehose to watch terms in realtime but you can't yet get it pushed outside of FF via email or IM?
- Daniel J. Pritchett
Daniel, Twitter has that right now, but Gillmor says that's not track
- Jesse Stay
/me prints up a few hundred "That's not track!" t-shirts

Killer feature. I'm watching news about Honduras scrolling by. Very useful.

Jesse: Oh, i'm with you... Real-Time Search is a better term :)
- Frankie Warren
BTW, integrating this into my blog right now
- Jesse Stay
Me too Jesse. Making a new static page for that comment:dpritchett search I mentioned
- Daniel J. Pritchett
this is definitely cool and all, but what about API? We are falling way behind on feature sets :)
- Tim Hoeck
It's like an alternative to watching TV, in a literary sort of way.
- Ted Gilchrist
Yay! This is the killer feature (once it's in the API, of course ;)
- Brandon Titus
I'd love to see a blog post about how this is implemented. Real-time search has some interesting problems.
- Chris Lamprecht
I take it back - I can't integrate this into my blog until I can filter it to a single list. I really need an embed for "comment:dpritchett list:e20" except lists are still virtual in that no one other than me can see them unless I use the atom export.
- Daniel J. Pritchett
I am sloooooooooooow. But what/where is the template to make the embeddable widget. please?
- Marg Uerite
You're right Jesse - it's not exactly Track but it's getting a lot closer. The old Twitter Track allowed you to set up multiple search terms (e.g. track iphone) and get those delivered to your IM with zero time lag. At any time you could type "track" to see what you're currently tracking and "untrack" to untrack something - e.g. "untrack iphone". There are some third party tools that...
- Mike Doeff
Paul, is there a way to change the title of the embed? The long search string looks kinda bad.
- Jesse Stay
Mike, Twitter offers that today. Gillmor says it's not Track.
- Jesse Stay
Marg, after you do a search, click the "Share / embed search" link to get the embed code.
- Dan Hsiao
Jesse, are you sure? Can you provide a URL describing this feature? I think you're referring to Twitter Search (and saved searches) which is totally different.
- Mike Doeff
Jesse, when / where did Gillmor say that isn't track? I'm pretty sure that Steve just wants the old track brought back, with some filtering capabilities added (the old Track didn't filter out blocked accounts).
- Mike Doeff
Yay! Have been eagerly awaiting this. :)
- Rick Turoczy
Mike, he's said in various comments. Looks like Track to me... Heck, it's even called "track".
- Jesse Stay
I want to 'Like' this *twice*! many thanks!

Good stuff although should support negative operators such as I should able to search my name in the all posts NOT coming from me. I've tried "from:-username" but it doesn't seem to work.
- Ferruh Mavituna
OK, you guys are wicked talented! It's kind of scary, but I love it. So what's next? Just kidding:)

Ferruh: you just have it a bit backwards... try -from:username instead :)
- Ross Miller
WOOOOOOOOOOW. Friendfeed is really pushing some cool features out :). Friendfeed is the best :)
- alfred westerveld
Highly addictive--great stuff! I did notice that if you do a search like [google] you'll see dupe stories streaming by quite a bit (e.g. the TechCrunch story about Google Voice shows up over and over right now). Not sure if it's possible to de-dupe based on destination url a little bit more?
- Matt Cutts
two months after redesign, we have access to real-time search. good news bc my preferred search engine is friendfeed. ;)

“Try your hand at closing California’s budget shortfall, estimated at $24 billion. It’s not easy, but it can be done. Cut spending, raise taxes and/or borrow to get the state out of the red. For each choice -- drawn from proposals from across the political spectrum -- we’ve tried to give some sense of the effects. As you craft your proposal, the Deficit Meter will show your progress.”
- Anthony Citrano
Holy crap...I tried it...raising taxes only gets you about halfway there and then you have to make some pretty painful cuts to get the rest of the way there. California is truly screwed.
- Alex Scoble
I got them into the green but it took some doing. Interesting that "legalize marijuana and tax at 10%" wasn't an option as a revenue stream. I wonder how quickly the scenario would change if it were.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
My only option is to move to florida
- Tony C
from fftogo
@Tina - it is an option (Assembly Bill 390) but not within the current emergency session. @Alex: Yes, but it ain't just California. The state continues to serve as an essential US leading indicator. ;)
- Anthony Citrano
Wow, that is amazing to see. I didn't even manage to get it half way down. My mom is in human services and as a recent college grad with no insurance it was hard to cut anything from education, human services, health or state workers. Poor Cali. :(
- Heather
@Earl: Florida, New York, and Michigan are close on California's heels. Try maybe Hawaii instead.
- Ladybug Heather
Another 6 months of Obama, and the U.S. will be like California.
- Spencer
That's an awesome visualization. California is pretty fucked.
- Eric P
I fixed it, but I raised the hell out of some taxes to do it.
- Steve Lowe
If you cut everything but the one-time fixes, and don't raise taxes, you are still in the red. California is boned. Can we sell it to Japan? China?
- Andy Dustman
@Andy, Heather, Eric - as I said to Alex: this isn't unique to CA; it's coming soon to a State House near you.
- Anthony Citrano
Yeah, but not to the extent that CA is facing...unless the economy gets worse. :)
- Alex Scoble
@Alex - that depends on whether you measure "extent" in percentages or absolutes. In absolutes, of course none are to the extent of CA because it's the largest state economy. But in percentage terms, most state budgets are similarly fucked over the next fiscal session - two if they're lucky.
- Anthony Citrano
I disagree. California is uniquely fucked up because of its constitution and system of ballot referendums (prop 13). Other states are able to adjust and respond more effectively as they go along - obviously they haven't stayed deficit free, but the situation isn't *as* dire elsewhere.
- Eric P
It's important to keep in mind that this is a static tool for what is an inherently dynamic problem. You can raise taxes, sure, but you'll also lose an extraordinary amount of revenue in subsequent years as families relocate. And if you think that won't happen, keep in mind that Cali is already hemorrhaging high-earners. Cali's problem is a spending problem, just as the rest of the...

- Forrest Cox
Good fun, balance California budget!
- Mike Reynolds
Wow, this is a great visual representation. Totally depressing.
- joey
@Eric P: yes, California has unique challenges. But what I meant was that the core problem - i.e. the state being totally bankrupt - is not unique. Many US states will be right behind it.
- Anthony Citrano
In MO, we had a GOP Gov. who made draconian cuts to balance the budget. It made him unpopular and he only served one term; but we are stable fiscally now.
- Robert Hafer
from iPhone
@Anthony - but not too many other states have an economy roughly the size of France's. A good comparison here is Texas, which is also very large, very diverse, and is in comparatively sterling fiscal shape.
- Forrest Cox
Just legalize our states #1 Cash crop, and the tax revenues from it should go a long way to shoring up the budget permanently. Then repeat for every other state and things might actually start to get better! Imagine that!
- Michael Fidler
The budget "options" are too old. Due to a failure to act before July 1 - some options are no longer available.
- LPH™ and his dog P™
from BuddyFeed
I didn't see an option to cut the salaries of the governor and legislators to minimum wage level.
- John (a.k.a. dendroica)
No new taxes? Select the "possibly illegal" cuts and give voters next election a choice: keep more of your earnings and invest in your own futures, or give it all to us and trust us to rain those benefits sufficiently back to you. Do you really have confidence CA can do that efficiently?
- Andrew Skretvedt
After experimenting and looking at the list, any change of less than a billion dollars is barely worth making. Fixing this is going to be painful, but this is what you get for continuously demanding services, at some point they need to be paid for. The "cut the health and dental care for state retirees maybe be illegal and will be challenged in court" is kind weird: if the state goes bankrupt, those won't be paid out anyway. But I guess everyone gets to feel good about not having to cut that.
- Andy Bakun
I also don't get why we're spending money on some of these things. Why are we keeping illegal immigrants in state prisons? Why have they not been deported? Wouldn't deporting them as soon as possible actually be cheaper in the long run?
- Andy Bakun
That wasn't too hard. I made 14bn in cuts and 16bn in new taxes, giving me a budget surplus of 6.8bn which I will bank for the next two years as the tax base shrinks even more. I gutted law enforcement (over porked as it is), cut hard across community college level (sorry kids, suck it up for a bit and read on your own) but left k-14 intact as well as ALL health and human services.
- Cole Jolley
It's amazing how may state funded freeloaders there are in Ca.
- Kenny Elliott
Maybe I didn't see the option, but I wanted to release all non-violent drug offenders, and others incarcerated for victimless crimes. That should've been worth something.
- Dave Roth
This is a wonderful application. It's very easy to armchair quarterback things like budgets. It's good to be able to see options laid out in an interactive fashion like this. Should do it more often, particularly before elections.
- Barry Biddlecomb
from twhirl
My one gripe about the application: It only shows the *deficit*, not the entire budget, and cuts that have been proposed by politicians. This is around $130B if federal funds aren't counted, $200B with federal funds. http://www.dof.ca.gov/budgeti...
- Andy Dustman
Gawd...this is hard to do without cutting much needed programs (I think anyway.)
- Adam C.
California is setting an early example for a wholesale rethink sorely needed in the United States. That is: what should government really be responsible for? As many of you have said, this is an example of free-riding entitlement gone amok. And if you all think this is bad, just wait until we have to take the same approach to the federal budget....
- Anthony Citrano
The thing is, paying more isn't even an option, since the Governator will terminate any bill that tries to raise taxes. Although I wonder how long that stance is going to last.
- Victor Ganata

I'm with Gabe: after considering BlueWave, I went with Helvetica, everything else is just girly. I might just stick with my 'stylish' hacks.
- Joel Bennett
Yea, flowers and stuff are annoying. Helvetica version should be improved for better spacing.
- Burcu Dogan
Thanks, Kol, that's what I was going to ask - if themes conflict with scripts. Sounds like it's cool - heading off to choose one now. I have one stylish userrstyle script and two greasemonkey scripts applied to friendfeed. We'll see if they can all play nice.
- Laura Norvig
works great - I'm trying helvetica now. It's super clean because I have avatars removed. Me likey.
- Laura Norvig
cool... when is that nasty orange "ParisLemon" theme comin? :P
- Susan Beebe
This'll make it prettier when I'm using Chrome anyway. :) I think I'll stick with the Stylish scripts and hacks on Firefox, though - I like the typography modifications they provide. When user-generated themes come in, will they be able to modify the typography/spacing, or just the background and colors? Thanks for the options, guys!
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
It's good that ugliness is no more reason #1 to stop connecting. Next I would like to have is d&d to sort out friends in categories

I like the Helvetica, who created it?
- Juvenn Woo
Sorry, but were there no "real" designers to push out some mindblowing themes? It´s just a change of color and background?
- Hans Kainz
Like those themes. Would be nice though, if they also show up if someone visits my page. Or does it?
- Sven
When I click your name, Sven, I get the bamboo theme, which is what I chose. If you have chosen a different theme from that, we know it just remembers yours. It seems to work differently from twitter.
- Rick Cogley
Helvetica all the way! I feel like the nytimes.com

@Rick: Thanks. I get the idea. The twitter concept would be nice though. Like personalized version of the FF page. Now, if there were archive links now.....
