"The decline was not trivial, either — from 115.9 million TV households in 2011, Nielsen estimates that only 114.7 million homes in the U.S. will have a TV set in 2012. That’s a decline of almost 1 percent at a time when the total number of U.S. households continues to grow."

Yep. Things are changing. Time will see if the independent producers of content will manage to scrape by in the future, though. We need a new way of funding, new ways of working together...
- WoH: Minding her Steves
How much of this is truly due to a paradigm shift, and how much of it is the fact that the economy is still in the crapper, I wonder?
- Victor Ganata
A bit of both, probably. But traditionally TV sales have held up well during recession http://www.tvweek.com/news... but maybe the depth of this recession is having an effect at last. However, I don't think we can discount the fact that a whole generation is growing up used to everything on demand. Month by month online viewing figures rise and I don't see that changing anytime soon.
- WoH: Minding her Steves
I think it's hard to compare, because the last time we had a recession of this duration and severity, TV hadn't been invented yet.
- Victor Ganata
Is it possible to love your FF friends? I have connected with people who I'm likely never to meet, people have given money, donated time, fought for the cause, helped me get into library school, crashed at my house and have had my back when others have not? I feel like I sincerely *love* y'all.
Is that something we could've imagined, that despite connecting people around the world with this internet thing, that deep connections would be established? That it wasn't just an experiment? The things you think about...
- Derrick
I mean, I never would have thought about library school. I never would've moved to New Orleans. I never would've gone to Portland and had dinner with Bren and Rochelle, Akiva, Alex, SAM, holly...I never would've bopped around LA with Monique at Roscoe's and Pea at Yogurtland. I just...I think it's fascinating.
- Derrick
Yes, love is possible here :) I would not have got to Chicago were it not for Sarah G, and would not have had so good a time were it not for Robin, Kirsten, Barry, Abigail, and Zee :)
- Pete
It makes me wonder if other are connecting, getting close to people, formulating relationships via other networks, and in other places (and if they seem to be as strongly connected as we are).
- Derrick
Oddly enough, Chris, yes. I'm not crazy about some of the stuff you've pulled over the years, but you're part of the fam, for better or worse.
- Auntie Buttinsky Botts
MaryB, I'm pretty crazy about most of the stuff I've pulled over the years. :)
- Cristo
Well, that's the difference between a youngish rake and a Midwestern old bat. I'm not saying I wouldn't check your story with three sources before lending you money.
- Auntie Buttinsky Botts
Anyway, I was just thinking about that. :)
- Derrick
MaryB, I'm not pretending to be a Midwestern old bat on this account... today.
- Cristo
Derrick, there are at least 4 other networks/boards I've been on that have formed friendships as close as what's on FF. It's definitely possible. I think the actual architecture at FF here just adds to the whole thing, though.
- Spidra Webster
And I've formed close friendships with Spidra on all of those boards and networks. As different people, of course.
- Cristo
Derrick, there are some people on FF I feel genuine, actual, platonic love for, though I will never meet them. You're one of those people. In fact, you were probably one of the first. Not bad for a random assortment of pixels on my screen. :-)
- Slippy
Funny, Cristo! Were you "Jesus Chrysler" on SFNet?
- Spidra Webster
D - it happens. This is the second community I've found like this. I love you, too.

I feel it's definitely possible to love people you've spent time with and watched their lives here on FF. <3

actaully I feel platonic lov to every1 that I interact with on FF.. be it a good convo or a heated one..I still belive(I am naive at times), that ALL people are good and need to be loved !
- Peter Dawson
I don't know what I'd call it but I definitely feel a strong connection to the people here and the community in general. You guys were there for me when I lost my job. You were there for me when my wife nearly died. You were there for me when she lost her job and we didn't know how we were going to make ends meet. There is a core of people here that I truly consider friends whether we ever meet in real life or not. I think that's love.
- DB - Just DB
It's totally possible to love your FF friends :)

This is real life. This is not a drill. (This is also not a pipe, but that's beside the point right now.) Love you, D.
- Your Neighbor Steve
D, I agree. There's a lot of authenticity on FF and a willingness to help that makes me proud to be here. I've now met 3 FF'ers in person and look forward to meeting more, including you.
- Corinne L
{{hugs}} we never would have met and you wouldn't have given me one of my favorite nicknames. :) Yeah, you can definitely love people you've not physically shared space with. I know this for a fact.

Internet friends are great. My closest friends now are people I first met on the Forever Knight mailing list in 1993 or '94.

<3 I've been thinking about this as well. I have friends here. I wish we could actually spend time offline together, but, this is good. So much better than not having you all at all.
- Yolanda
I love you D. And so many others here. I've connected in real ways with people thru blogging, a parenting website, & now friendfeed. Y'know, real recognize real, and I'd like to think the reason we're all having the same kind of positive experience is cos ALL YOU PEOPLE ARE GOOD FOLX. Love shines thru even online <3 <3 <3 <3

Haven't read all the comments, but I dare say I agree with most of you, FF is a strange place, it has redefined the terms/boundaries of friendship, more so than any other social site. I held off commenting here until I could get my thoughts together coherently. My two cents: Derrick, it's entirely appropriate that *you* posted this. The first time you and I met, it was if we had known each other for years. In truth, we had. You are one of my best friends, dude. You are among a group of people I'd do anything for. I have my moments of social ineptitude, but I love meeting you people IRL. Not only is it possible to love FF friends, it's easy to love some of them.
- ha3rvey (Hugs 50% off!)
Also, my family has joined me at 2 different meet-ups, and their reactions have been the same both times. They understand why we're friends. We still talk about the Rudy's BBQ meetup in Arlington, even though it was months ago. The meetup at Sarah's in Austin seems like last weekend. That's real.
- ha3rvey (Hugs 50% off!)
I want to go to a meetup and meet you guys. I can't wait for you to meet the wife either. I think she's gradually warmed up to me spending so much (virtual) time on here over the years. You guys liking her yummny kreations hasn't hurt. When we talk I mention you by name (or handle) and don't even have to say from FriendFeed anymore. It's just assumed. Happens all the time now.
- DB - Just DB
Nine and I talk about you guys as though we know you. You are our mutual friends.

MC, you know we'll be there in spirit. Remember Alex and Cassie's wedding? We got blow by blow descriptions ... or was it livestreamed. Felt like we were there. Joey's too.

My best friends today are mostly people I've met online. That includes FF, Twitter, Second Life, and mostly Seesmic. I have moved so many times, and friendships dwindled along the way. Social networks changed that for me, and I'll always be grateful.

We really have to figure out a way to stream it. I am also counting on the folks who are able to be there will share their pics with everyone.

@Neal yea, we really need a FriendFeed meetup. I might be up there for Web 2.0 in March...or we can have one at SXSW if a large number of us are going. Let's plan and get the Upcoming page going.
- Mark Krynsky
@Mark Not gonna make SXSW, but am definitely down for working on an FF get together. March is long enough away to make sure plenty of people have time to plan ahead. I added you on Upcoming so we can start coordinating it. Anyone else interested/want to help set this up?

Maybe we can talk Paul & Bret into letting us invade the FF offices for a meetup in conjunction with Web 2.0? That would be sooooo cool!

"A woman who purports to be a UCLA student has released a video that went viral over the weekend, wherein she makes various racist claims about Asian-American students. The university has called the video "repugnant.""

"It certainly is. Her screed (transcript available here) is so un-self-aware — she refers to herself as a "nice American girl" even as she's uttering a ridiculous mockery of some unspecified "Asian" language, and repeatedly talks about "manners" while exhibiting a catastrophic lack of them — that some have questioned whether it's a joke. But it's not at all funny, and if it's a parody,...

- Kristin
It's even sadder because I've witnessed this many times. We have a very big asian community at our school and I've had many classmates who have been blatantly racist towards asian students in our class. The stereotype they've created in their minds are disgusting and sadly not very different than what this girl is saying. I've heard much more meaner comments than those in this video. It's truly disturbing and heartbreaking.

I agree with the above statement and I don't think she should be sacked from school. She was exercising her rights to freedom of speech and expression and say what is in her mind. It is unfortunate that some believe freedom of speech means say whatever you want to say and don't think...

On a serious note, the one good thing about ignorance is that it can be corrected: people can learn. There are a lot of assumptions going around about this girl's intelligence but all the IQ in the world won't help you when you've been miseducated by people you grew up with and/or trust.
- Akiva
Can I, like, reach through my, like, computer and, like, smack her?
- Elena
So apparently UCLA has determined that the student is in fact Alexandra Wallace, and she sent the following apology to the school paper: “Clearly the original video posted by me was inappropriate. I cannot explain what possessed me to approach the subject as I did, and if I could undo it, I would. I’d like to offer my apology to the entire UCLA campus. For those who cannot find it within them to accept my apology, I understand.”
- Jessie
At least she didn't give a "I'm sorry people were offended" non-apology. And this will probably follow her at least through graduation, and will likely impact her job prospects in the future. And I hope she'll be thinking of this every time she sits near her Asian/Asian-American classmates, because I'm pretty sure they will be.
- Jessie
If she plans to have a career in politics, then this situation may have hampered it a bit at least with this video of record.
- CarlC
Apparently she's receiving death threats now. What the hell, people? Crap like that transforms her into a victim instead of a perpetrator.

okay. well first of all her boobs are about to fall out of her shirt. Not attractive. Even less attractive than her fried, blonde hair. Not to mention she sounds stupid. She has that voice that makes everything sound like a question. This video pissed me right off. I wonder if shes aware of how many people could make a video stereotyping "girls like her". People are idiots.
- Marissa

It's not worth commenting on her appearance, honestly. There's enough stupid flying out of her mouth to criticize. And it's not like she planned to get dressed up for this - I imagine she would have worn something different if she were expecting anyone beyond her close friends to see this.
- Jessie
I think here are double stds here. if it were Lou Dobbs or Glenn Beck, it would be awsomely ok ?? but if it was a generic student its awsomely bad and rascit ??
- Peter Dawson
Peter, unfortunately, for every girl like this there are probably ten other people just like her who are silent in their bigotry. Lou Dobbs, Glenn Beck, people of their ilk, they're popular because people agree with them but having people agree with you doesn't make what you're saying right or good. Racism is racism whether you've got a TV show or just a webcam.

If you want to import your Facebook status, you must have "Allow friends to subscribe to my status" checked on the "Status Updates" custom privacy setting at http://www.facebook.com/login.... This is the default, but a few people have customized it away.
I think that's fine JA. They key is to have the "Allow friends to subscribe to my status" checkbox checked (the one right above the red bar in the second screenshot). That dialog appears when you select "Customize..." from the "Status Updates" pulldown on the first screenshot.
- Paul Buchheit
Wow, that totally fixed my issue. Thanks, Paul (and FriendFeed)!
- Mark Trapp
Sorry - this doesn't work. I have that box checked. Unimpressed.
- Mathew
Matthew, Facebook has been through at least one major redesign since this entry was posted on 21st October. Anyone help Matthew in getting his FB imported in FF?
- Kol Tregaskes
Kol is correct, Facebook has changed their interface since these instructions were posted. Unfortunately, they seem to have eliminated the "Status Updates" RSS feed entirely. If you can find it, let me know.
- Paul Buchheit
The feed itself can't be gone - people who added it to FriendFeed before Facebook's UI changed are still having updates pulled in here. But as far as finding it now to add it...I've been unsuccessful. And modifying the URL of a working feed doesn't seem to work, either.
- Jandy
Yes, the RSS feeds still exist at some level, but the UI for discovering their secret urls seems to have been removed.
- Paul Buchheit
I'd love to know what the FFers think about all the changes that Facebook seems to be doing lately.

Louis, I think you're right - there is still innovation happening around Twitter, fortunately. The fact is there is still a huge audience on Twitter and that audience still has the potential to be monetized. I'm even building something around Twitter at the moment. There is still that threat though, that developers could leave if Twitter keeps neglecting them - it's in the back of the mind

Reminds me of the joke about the phases of sex... The 1st kind of sex is Smurf Sex. This kind of sex happens when youfirst meet someone and you both have sex until you are blue in the face. The 2nd kind of sex is Kitchen Sex. This is when you have been withyour partner for a short time and you are so horny you will have sexanywhere, even in the kitchen. The 3rd kind of sex is Bedroom Sex....

Recently my cousin's head was run over by a car. This is what's left of her helmet. My cousin completely survived because of this helmet. Please think of this before riding a bike without a helmet next time!
This happened to a friend of mine at the beginning of the month. He didn't do so good in the accident, but the helmet obviously saved his life. Thankfully is on his way home tomorrow: http://www.caringbridge.org/visit...
- Steve Lacey
I used to ride my bike without the helmet even though it is mandatory in Chennai, India. But after reading this I am not even going to the next street in my bike without helmet.
- Sudar
I never wear a helmet. When hearing things like this, I always think of this article.http://news.bbc.co.uk/1.... In the Netherlands no one wears a helmet. It seems safe to me.
- Peter Stuifzand
I was hit while riding to work in summer 2006 & did not want anyone to touch my helmet at all costs. If my brain was scrambled, I did not want anyone to touch my egg:) I highly recommend a helmet especially if you think you will not need one! Mine was almost the same color too & manufacturer, but there is no conspiracy there:)
- Roney Smith
Bicyclists/motorcyclists that don't wear helmets are better called future organ donors
- Brian Sullivan
Thanks for sharing. I ride often at traffic time between cars. always wear my helmet...itsg good to know that It does work :)
- jonathan
from twhirl
Wow, glad to hear your friend is doing well after that. I agree, helmets save lives. Regardless, I've many intentional close-calls by drivers who don't want to share the road. Unfortunately, this is the common attitude where I live (southern US).
- pete
we wear helmets for everything: mtb, snowboarding, wakeboarding, skateboarding & even surfing - skulls are fragile why not put a protective layer around it (i also try real hard to not ride on streets - a high percentage of drivers are oblivious to bike riders)...
- mike "glemak" dunn
I always ride in my helmet and stay to bike lanes as much as possible. Nice to know the safety tools work. Now, if I can just avoid that NYPD cop with a penchant for knocking people off their bikes. Hopefully, he won't transfer to LAPD.
- Jason Toney
Peter Stuifzand, my cousin would be dead if she did not wear her helmet. That article is BS. Wear your helmet!
- Jesse Stay
from twhirl
Point blank. You are a moron if you ride without a helmet. Sorry, but that's true and you're just going to play into Darwinian theory should you continue to ride without one. Any 'real' cyclist (e.g - you've been hit by a car - and yes, I have been) will tell you this without reservation. Helmets work without a doubt.
- AJ Kohn
I survived a nasty motorcycle crash in my youth and would also be dead without that helmet - which cracked in 2 like an egg (that would have been my head, as the nurse aptly put it!).
- Susan Beebe
A friend who's a cop refers to motorcycles as donorcycles whenever she sees someone riding without a helmet. I figure that applies for bicycles, too.
- ha3rvey (Hugs 50% off!)
I was on the way to work Monday morning while it was raining, when the third car in front of me spun out of control and flipped twice into a ditch. When I pulled over to help her out she was just fine. She only had a scratch on her left shoulder from the broken window and was not hurt anywhere else. THE REASON: She was wearing her seat belt. It's nice to hear that these devices are actually helping us!
- David Cook
Wow! I wear mine! Didn't for years - I was lucky I guess. Thanks for posting that!
- matthew hunt
OMG... Jesse, do you have a link other than here on FF? I have friends whose kids refuse to wear theirs, and seeing this may help.
- Cyndy
If it's nice enough to ride, I probably won't be bothering with the human-powered bike any longer. I always wear a helmet on my gas-powered bike.
- MiniMage, enterRUPPted
As long as we won't have mountains, we Dutch will not wear those things. Otherwise we won't be able to recognise the tourists on bikes.
- Ton Zijp
Thanks for sharing - I had a mishap with a car, wasn't wearing a helmet at the time, was lucky. If they don't see you, it doesn't matter either way. Wear the helmet!
- Rick Bucich
This isn't as extreme as this but when I fell off my bike onto a sidewalk and broke my arm, I thought I was fine for a while. Later, my dad noticed that the whole front of my helmet was all scratched up and the visor in front was torn off! I realized that if I wasn't wearing my helmet on the 2 minute trip down the road, I probably wouldn't be typing this comment right now! Not that I'd be dead but I would have suffered some head damage, limiting my ability to do most things.
- Kevin Lyons
Helmets for cyclists are mandatory in Australia. Still gives me the shudders when I'm travelling and see bareheaded bicyclists on the roads.
- Kate Foy
I had heard about something like this a while back. I try to do it as much as I can but jackalopes are always cutting in the space. Oh well.
- caj needs a haircut
Continue what you are doing Curtis. Don't mind those jackalopeseses
- AJ Batac :)
This philosophy collapses when you have real gridlock though; if all the lanes are clogged with stopped (or very slow moving) traffic and you try to employ this technique, you just end up pissing off the cars trapped behind you because you are going 5mph while everyone else is going 10.
- Phil Glockner
It's simply courteous and defensive driving. There should be space between cars for safety. And there's no reason to close ranks to not allow others in. We're all going in the same direction with the same goal. If you'd like others to be courteous, always be courteous yourself.
- ·[▪_▪]·
Living in LA has totally colored how I drive now. I remember going back home to SD to see my folks and I was agog at how much more aggressive I'd become. :(
- Derrick
It's not cheating, it's just optimal timing :-)
- Todd Hoff
It's the rocket scientist like this that causes wrecks behind him and road rage. Slower traffic keep right is the law (for good reason). He demonstrates why he should stay in the far right lane, go about his business, and stop trying to "fix all of the traffic around him". What an ego.
- Robert Kenney
the most important part is really the end, where he says how this style of driving is actually calming and altruistic instead of infuriating and selfish.... geez, if everything felt that way we'd have less problems once people got out of their car, all frustrated and pissy.
- Nicķ
I received a 404 error. There seems to be a traffic jam on the server as well.
- Louis Trapani
from iPhone
It's kind of obvious.. stop and go causes problems (and wrecks), even if it does take you longer, it doesn't FEEL longer because you aren't gas/break/gas/break, so less stressful drive. On the flip side, you think this guy driving slow (and not keeping the traffic pace) will cause someone else to slam him in the rear?
- Tim Hoeck
It might cause more disruption with cars behind him moving into the other lane to pass him. Honestly, I can't stand drivers who leave a huge gap in front during a traffic jam. Josh, it's basically just extending a tripod and holding it in the middle :) http://www.youtube.com/watch...
- Rodfather
Interesting: "Governor Bush vetoed 2005 SB732, which would have reserved the left lane for passing, saying that drivers blocking the left lane are 'cautious and careful.'" - from "State keep right laws" http://www.mit.edu/~jfc...
- Micah
So, his basic tactic, albeit in a single lane, is similar to what I see highway patrol officers do when they want to SLOW DOWN traffic -- the highway patrol car swerves back and forth from fast to left to right lane and back and forth, lights ablazing, effectively doing two things -- creating a BIG GAP between the cop car and the rest of the traffic in front of him, and second SLOWS...

- Pete D
A few people already mentioned it above, but let me also say that this technique will not work in heavily trafficked roads. I've spent time in cities like Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, Bangkok and you just can't leave a large gap between you and the car in front of you. First they will get filled by other cars really really quickly, and second you will just piss off the cars behind you.
- Andre P. Siregar
My wife and I debate this, because I sometimes do this myself. Stop and go traffic seems silly, when throughput would be higher if people left enough space between cars to absorb some of the braking. The website at http://trafficwaves.org/ is interesting, especially the link to http://www.ur.umich.edu/0304... that claims single-lane jams would be radically reduced if >=20% of cars had adaptive cruise control.
- Matt Cutts
kinda like why people are requested to exit in an orderly fashion during a fire. The only hindrance to this is getting over the feeling of being taken advantage of by the jackasses who ignore the order. But no pain no gain and you have to live with that for the greater good.
- vijay
I practice a type-A version of this in non-stop-and-go traffic, I'd call "driving Parkour", basically, I tend to drive over the speed limit, but I leave large gaps, and when I need to slow down, I avoid hitting my brakes and try to led friction/drag slow my car down before I have to hit my breaks. I look far ahead and try to plot out if I need to switch lanes in order to maintain speed...

- Ray Cromwell
Clarkson eluded to this in his unique crass manner, don't brake and drive clever. Save everyone money.
- Toby Graham
the biggest cause of traffic jams are the idiots who don't get in lane and bimble along in the middle lane without any plan to actually overtake anyone. I've seen people when there has been nothing on the inside lane and yet they won't pull into it as they should. This is even more obvious when you consider that articulated lorries aren't allowed to drive in the outside lane, meaning...

This is actually an impressive use of game theory/backward induction to determine an optimal strategy. If this guy isn't a mathematician or work for the highway department, he should be.
- Mark Trapp
i do the same here in Rome/Italy since 1998
- FullSite
Great to see this taken up again - I've been doing this since I first read his site years ago...
- Kevin Marks
I always keep lot of room in front of my car for my safety but I think it takes lot of room and creates longer line.
- Ashish
While the line may be longer the actual distance you travel isn't any greater; you use less gas; your breaks will last longer; you're less likely to be involved in a crash and in fact it has an almost negligible affect on your travel time. Yes it is "slower" but on my 50 mile commute the difference is maybe a couple of minutes.
- Eoghann Irving
I agree Eoghann Irving. Wish everybody thought like this.
- Ashish
+1 Pete Delucchi. I do agree it's probably better for your mental health to drive this way. Assuming you don't mind the "insult" of everybody cutting into to your lane.
- Matsis
Drivers behind me may get annoyed but there is always room at the front ;)
- Ashish
I used to drive like this, until my commute changed to one that had more traffic lights. Then I realized that letting cars in front of me didn't make 1 second per car difference, it could make 10's of minutes, because I'd often miss traffic light cycles. I wish it wasn't the case - I guess it's going to depends on your commute.
- Nick Lothian
for the most part this will work; unless you're in the NYC area or such.
- clarke thomas
I was thinking the same thing. Count how many times you said "Cool" Robert ;)
- Andru Edwards
This acquisition is most likely going to suck for users, but congrats to the FF team. Once Google announced Wave, selling to Facebook was probably the only remaining exit strategy worth the money.
- Chip Ramsey
I don't know if i'm excited by the possiblities of this move, or frightened by what this could mean.
- John Czwartacki
I hope they don't spoil it for us. I just want to keep coming to Friendfeed.com
- Mark
If they had no plans of shutting down FriendFeed and rolling features into Facebook they would have said so right away to avoid speculation and to reassure FF users. I am trying not to be suspicious, but I am.
- Inside Alaska
Andru: it was about 100 degrees outside where I was doing the interview. I was trying to think cool and keep my cool. Heheh.
- Robert Scoble
Maybe now we'll be able to integrate Facebook feed with FF & twitter
- Justin Long
Faceborg...Googlebook...time to move back to StumbleUpon? Guess we should have seen this coming when FriendFeed got integrated into FeedBurner.
- Internet Strategist
This interview is pretty funny... the person interviewing sounds like he just wants to ask questions for the sake of asking questions...;-) ... thanks for the insightful interview but..
- Sherif Mansour
In the interview, it was said that FriendFeed was not in immediate danger and could have continued for a number of years on their own. I'm not quite sure if that is true, because FriendFeed didn't develop their own business model.
- Rishabh Mishra (p248)
About integrating the social graphs, my social networks on FF and FB had different purposes. I don't have any friends on FB whom I haven't personally met, whereas I subscribe to some people I don't know on FF just because their feeds are interesting. On a related note, the FB graph is undirected and the FF graph is directed.

"tremendous opportunity" is so vague. Opportunity for who? What opportunity exactly? Or is it just the opportunity to allow the friendfeed employees who weren't already rich to get rich?
- Laura Norvig
Laura: it's every engineer's dream to change the world of 300 million people instead of a few hundred thousand people. That's why this is a tremendous opportunity.
- Robert Scoble
Sigh. I guess. It's just very hard to think of Facebook as a life-changing venue.
- Laura Norvig
Robert: Thanks for this - some information at last!
- Jim Connolly
Because just like in high school, sometimes the sweaty jock who doesn't wash his hands after using the john still gets the best girl - while those of us who carried her books and wrote her poetic love letters and timed our walking to go by her locker at just the right time find ourselves on the outside looking in again." You nailed it Louis!
- DJ Stevie Steve
Nice post, Louis. Was waiting to see what you'd write. :)
- Kali
My immediate reaction was Facebook will push ads onto their users. I think FriendFeed could be seriously screwed up with live moving ads, so that's hopefully out of the picture from a purely usability view. Friendfeed is all about realtime web information. I then wonder how in that case will the monetise the relationship. My guess? Facebook will show live conversations and hopefully they will rip out the poor IM implementation in Facebook. The purchase may be nothing more sinister, I hope...
- Mark Aitken
Well said Louis. This is the big question.
- Mark Krynsky
Okay, so now I'm ready to cry. Excellent post, Louis. Thank you!
- Ladyepiphanybug
Excellent, you've captured my sentiment very well. Mark - I disagree. FF is an excellent platform for floating ads based upon our behavior, and it is just about the only platform in existence where the algorithms for ad placement could have been done right - and welcomed.
- JCunwired
Louis's reaction is the one I most wanted to see. Thanks for not disappointing us, man!
- Daniel J. Pritchett
"FriendFeed is the one that has a 4.0 GPA and had big dreams of an Ivy League diploma. And yet, she ends up with you - the Silicon Valley equivalent of your local state school. When you come rolling in with your heavy car, big wheels and pumping bass, we don't care how much money you say you're worth - we still don't trust your grin when you open the door and say "hop in"."

I'm *loving* the high school stereotypes as metaphor, btw.

jcunwired - I hope it's unobtrusive, don't mind people making money, but lets hope it's sensible. My worst fear is FF is seen as a threat and silenced, but I'd doubt Zuckerberg would be so brash..

I just learned about this minutes ago. Louis it's not 4 big companies. there will only be three after Microsoft merges/acquires Facebook and Google buys Twitter. This move makes perfect sense for Facebook and it's what their SocialTV initiative needed to really work. I see big things for it in Facebook's future. I don't know how I feel about it though!
- Michael Fidler
Somebody wrote that this is just about getting FF's tech talent. Don't you love how all these social networks conveniently forget who it is who makes them valuable?
- Dawn
That was a very enjoyable read :) And the point about bright startups having dim perspectives at the end is alas the truth at the moment: you have to be able to bootstrap your finance, have revenue from the start (membership, affiliates, whatever) that funds your growth. Or find a way to get sold to the big boys (although there are big boys outside the immediate industry that might...

Life streaming via Friendfeed I always felt like a kind of a partner investing something of me in something greater... Now I discover that this investment counts for nothing. No one was or is committed to keep the style and special features that made Friendfeed attractive in the first place. No one is committed or loyal to the user base and the investment of life talent and prestige...

Wow. Some of you apparently live terrible lives, filled with terrible people you seem unable to avoid, with the possible exception of this one website, I feel terrible about that.Of course, it's also possible you've wildly overestimated the difference between the people you know here and the people who know you in real life.
- Richard Lawler
I like this post, but I love all my social networks equally lol.

Luckily, unlike so many here, I can keep using any website I want the same way I did before without devolving into a baseless bitchfest about what might happen someday somewhere. Or, I could have kneejerk reaction based on irrational fear. hmmm
- Richard Lawler
And you're very good at keeping your assumptions to yourself
- Bwana ☠
On the bright side, I can have a kneejerk reaction on FB and remove baseless bitches from my friends list. :)
- JCunwired
Except, they haven't really said anything. So thinking anything will or won't survive is premature. If Facebook perfectly met everyone's expectations there would be no need for war, sickness or evil deeds. Every online community is the same as every other one, if friendfeed, for whatever reason, doesn't keep doing what you want ti to do, you'll use something else. It hasn't ever been perfect and it never will be.
- Richard Lawler
I told you Richard. You're wrong. "Taylor and Cox say that the Friendfeed product will live on independently, and eventually Friendfeed will be merged into Facebook. But the Friendfeed team is not being kept whole. Some employees will now report to Cox, others to engineering head Mike Schroepfer. In my opinion that means, long term, the Friendfeed product itself is unlikely to be a big priority." http://www.techcrunch.com/2009...
- Bwana ☠
Well, you told me what techcrunch's opinion is, because that's what I wanted to know. Thanks! (there's sarcasm there)
- Richard Lawler
Ok let me slow it down for you. The team is splitting. The product is going to merge with Facebook. (No sarcasm)
- Bwana ☠
I can wholly identify with JC's statement.
- JA Castillo
Wow Bwana...you are really bitchy in this thread...I think Richard is making some good points. If you are having issues with the people you 'accept' on Facebook there really is only one person who you can point the finger. You. Facebook makes it quite easy to NOT get involved with any person.
- Sidney
I accept friends in Facebook because if they took the time to want to be friends with me, I feel obligated. I'm also not one to hurt a person's feelings by turning them down. That's what its like in a closed community like Facebook. Friendfeed is totally open - I can read, share, participate and like without having any obligation whatsoever to the people I interact with.
- JCunwired
It's interesting to see ho people use different networking sites - for example - I use FB for personal connections and family and the rest are business related.
- Graham Bunting
I like my friends, but you are definently right. I just got on friendfeed any advice on making friends?
- Ryan Peach
Michael, a friend who had cancer asked one friend to be the go-to for updates, news, well wishes, etc., because it really is exhausting answering everyone's questions, hearing their concerns, soothing them and yourself (not that these things aren't done out of love and concern). Before you're into your treatment, you might want to talk about this w/ a friend or family member who might fill this role for you.
- Ayşe E.
