"Erich, Exactly. I've played the traffic game and it is not only addictive but exhilarating when you beat your records. The only problem is when you try to start making money off of that ;) Please let me know how the new strategy pays off! I truly believe in the longer route toward building a valuable following. It's hard work but it's bound to pay off. Best, Nick"
- Nick O'Neill
"Hi Jason, You are definitely right. There are a number of strategies which combine lots of content and are actually informative. Scaling that business model is very difficult however. If you are looking to build a media business then it's great strategy. Best, Nick"
- Nick O'Neill
"Ari, couldn't you just thank the people rather than retweet the fact that they said it? I feel like there's a big difference between both models."
- Nick O'Neill
"Scoble, I'm always up for poking sticks in eyes of citics. But as with you ... I try to avoid it especially because sarcastic tweets don't come across to well (other people don't understand that I'm really trying to bug a few people)."
- Nick O'Neill
"So don't think of social as "socialist" ... it's social in the sense of socializing with others. Socializers and capitalists fit well with one another :) Combine the two and you have a social capitalist!"
- Nick O'Neill
"@Adam, I think the title was more of a figure of speech but 3 years makes sense. Didn't Gladwell state 10 years was how long it takes to become a master at something though? I don't remember the number in that book but I recall it being a fairly long time."
- Nick O'Neill
I heard/recall it takes 10,000 hours of actual practice to become expert at something (which takes many years). Thus most of us become experts at sleeping, and few other practices.
- Reese Jones
"Thanks Mari for the kind words. I think you definitely have a great perspective on things and you've been focusing on relationship marketing for much longer than I have. Thanks again!"
- Nick O'Neill
"Hey Ari, That's a very good question. I previously thought that developers would build these filters but so far I've only seen beginning attempts. I guess a great way to look at it is that there are amazing opportunities ahead for developers to quickly improve upon the current discovery models. Best, Nick"
- Nick O'Neill
"@John, I'm not sure what you mean by your question ... Obviously you should still produce content, but a larger part of online communication is listening to what's going on, not just speaking."
- Nick O'Neill
"Steve, Here job is to reach out to us and so far all of her press releases haven't come off to well. I tend to be a polite individual and rarely discuss when someone slips up but this turned into a disaster and all she need to do was to delete the list from running at all and start a new one. It took 8 hours to figure it out. She still hasn't sent a follow-up email to anybody to explain what happened and engage them directly. She also apologizes in the comments here yet doesn't understand what technically went wrong when sending emails is practically her job. I honestly don't want to be rude but she just made one mistake after another and IT'S HER JOB to know these things. I've seen mistakes like this made before but typically it was squashed in no time at all. Best, Nick"
- Nick O'Neill
i was thinking the same thing jay and zach. this one is like 8 months old
- MG Siegler
I had the exact same problem recently
- Nick O'Neill
Also get ready for other problems to start up after you get it replaced ... my computer sometimes won't go to sleep when I close the top now ... really annoying
- Nick O'Neill
8 Months? Sure, we're in a recession, but that's way too long.
- Mark Trapp
im there now - i got my socialmedian tshirt on, hot dogs on the grill, corn in the popper, soda on tap and a fast wifi from the starbucks next door - come on by!
- Allen Stern
Which Apple store, the 5th Avenue one?
- Robert Scoble
Allen you missed the Turkey roast we just had - it was at home with our neighbors though. Robert in case you're asking me, the only one in Salt Lake City :-)
- Jesse Stay
Jesse: nah, I'm in NYC until late in the afternoon tomorrow, so am looking to join Allen.
- Robert Scoble
BTW, I'll be Qik'ing it from my jailbroken iPhone about to be shipped to its new owner. You'll see them on FriendFeed and on http://qik.com/jessestay - the local news is talking about broadcasting my stream as we're waiting in line.
- Jesse Stay
Looks like Allen has some pressure to get an iPhone now. :-)
- Jesse Stay
I'll be the one at work looking for new iPhones in people's hands, so I can buy the second generation second-hand (without a contract, thank you). 8GB simply isn't enough.
- MiniMage TKDteacher of FF
I am going at 6am to a local At&t off the beaten path. hoping for the best!
- Tony
BoringMage you could have gotten mine off Ebay for $300. I was unlucky - the 2nd gen iPhones are going for $350-$400 on Ebay now. The winner of mine got a steal.
- Jesse Stay
Heh, I just bought a Fujitsu LifeBook T2010 from the Fujitsu eBay store; it just arrived today. Come to think of it, I should probably wait a few months before I think about buying last year's iPhone.
- MiniMage TKDteacher of FF
i was just kidding! sorry it apparently backfired.
- Allen Stern
Allen I think you have to get an iPhone now
- Jesse Stay
jesse - why do i want an iphone - i pay $35/month for everything including all the tethering i want, i love my device - i dont see a reason to change at this point - i know that i lose coolness points but im so good looking it makes up for it
- Allen Stern
robert i bet if you go to the 5th ave store you could be the first one to get it since the store is open 24 hrs
- Allen Stern
I used to wonder why anyone would want an iPhone. I bought one in desperation while waiting for my bike to be repaired. I don't actually have phones because I want to make phone calls; I buy phones because I want to have fun, and the iPhone is fun. I have my Mogul for tethering, if need be, but there's also PDANet.
- MiniMage TKDteacher of FF
I don't understand what's so amazing about this new one that it's needed ... the iphone v2.0 is excellent with the OS 3.0
- Nick O'Neill
It was clear Allen was kidding, because he wouldn't have a socialmedian t-shirt. :)
- Louis Gray
Rob, yes - it beats going during the day and burning up in the heat as I wait in a much longer line.
- Jesse Stay
Rob - it's one of those stories you will tell your kids when you are in the old folks home - next to your dentures will be your photo of you and your iphone 3gs receipt - the kids will sit on your lap as you tell them the excitement of activation and getting your first twitter app loaded up on there.
- Allen Stern
apple did one thing smart - they created a yearly upgrade cycle for people with extra spendable income - it's a brilliant strategy - next year it will be the iPhone 4Gb
- Allen Stern
Nick, now's the time for me to sell my old iPhone while I can still get the same or more than I paid for it. So it makes sense for me to get a new iPhone right now - it's an investment.
- Jesse Stay
Allen, I made $100 on my last iPhone. I'm not paying a cent for this iPhone.
- Jesse Stay
nice one! you could use that 100 to get some better tshirts for your future shows
- Allen Stern
Wow--when you figure in the time standing in line---that's one expensive phone.
- Rob Michael (Atmos Trio)
Rob, I'm not missing any work hours waiting for this iPhone
- Jesse Stay
not to mention I don't have to wait in line. I'm doing this for the fun of it mostly.
- Jesse Stay
Why is the conversation on FriendFeed the same as it was when it first launched? It's a comparison of Twitter vs. FriendFeed ... honestly it should be Facebook vs. FriendFeed ... Twitter doesn't have friend lists
I have to admit though ... I'm loving the threaded conversations on FriendFeed ... it's the same as facebook though except no limit to the number of followers you have
- Nick O'Neill
Jesse: me. Nick: the reason I don't care about Facebook is that most of the geeks I care about are on Twitter. I go to Facebook every day and most of what I see is just a repeat of Twitter. Facebook limited us to 5,000 friends, which made it great for my wife to talk to her high school friends, but it's not good for someone like me with a much larger audience.
- Robert Scoble
Robert, I think you're right - it's the *communities* that compete, not necessarily the technologies. When it comes to social networks I think it proves that you're competing for the community, not the technology.
- Jesse Stay
Robert and Jesse are right. Facebook and FriendFeed may be more alike in functionality, but Twitter and FriendFeed are more alike in audience/users. I have probably 75% overlap of friends on FriendFeed and Twitter, and probably 10% overlap between Facebook and either FriendFeed or Twitter. And if it weren't for a few FriendFeeders I've added on Facebook (I'm very picky about who I add on there), it'd be more like 3%.
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
wrt Twitter depending on the client (e.g., TweetDeck) now you can segment those you follow. And/or, if you have multiple accts announce only/newsy (i.e., @trxcksterlabs) vs. biz+personal (ie, @trxckster) vs. particular interest (i.e.,@jordanrt - for skateboarding/comix for child so I can stop following via @trxckster). Yes, labor-intensive to tease the personas but isn't it the same place that folks are being corralled w/the fB tweaks and UI changes?
- Angela E. Taylor
Angela: sorry, that's not correct. Yes, you techically can segment, but then you are totally locked into TweetDeck. And, what happens when you use an iPhone, or get a Palm Pre? Hint: you lose all those features. On friendfeed I don't lose those features because they are built in at a deep level.
- Robert Scoble
I'm looking for conversations about all other things than twitter/facebook and other such things. Most of the real-time conversations I can find are about that.
- Charbax
Charbax: it's a slow news day right now. There's not much that's interesting. I just checked into Facebook and it's even more boring over there and I have a great friend list there.
- Robert Scoble
Nick: To me, the constant comparisons between FF and Twitter seem like an inferiority complex on the part of FF community. I mean, if people truly believe that FF is better than Twitter, why bother spending so much time comparing the two?
- Andre P. Siregar
Andre: you have a point there, but it's standard evangelistic behavior. We find a new shiny toy and we want to talk about it and share it with others. We used to talk non stop about Twitter on Twitter too and how it was going to do away with blogs. We survived that period, we'll survive this one.
- Robert Scoble
You can setup a group for friends or any other group you wish through tweetdeck
- Bill Masson
"The bailouts are just delaying the amount of time before a larger recession by propping up banks and other industries. Let's just get rid of the fed and deal with the pain for the time being. Do I smell revolution in the air?"
- Nick O'Neill
