So the question is, will they honor those great deals on the items I got into my shopping cart before the site went down?
- Rob Hoeting
Ugh... you'd think a corporate environment like Sears might have some pretty rigorous load testing in place. So, any updates as to whether or not you'll get the deals? Wow, and I guess they didn't learn from last year, either: http://www.websitepulse.com/corpora...
- Doug Bloebaum
Actually, their customer service was decent. They honored the deals, although they had me pay the regular price and they would credit the difference. That's funny the site crashed last year too. It's not like they had NO IDEA traffic was coming.
- Rob Hoeting
Sears.com absolutely crumbled due to the black Friday traffic. When I finally was able to checkout my items, the sale had expired. The shopping cart knew this, but the catalog did not. Man, can you imagine what life must be like in their IT organization.

I grimace when I see people use their mouse to highlight single words or phrases that they are then going to cut/copy & paste. I'm all for keystroke efficiency. Need to back up 3 words and cut it? Put the mouse down and control+shift+left, left, left, control-x! Gah!

Not really funny, more sad. He killed a beautiful hive and left a pile of dead bodies. Especially sad when bees really aren't doing that well these days. :(

- A.T.
Such a misleading map. All it shows is that the majority of the country moved a little towards the left and voted Obama. Look at a true red/blue map and you'll see the majority of the country is still red. You can spin this however you want, but looking at the popular vote, this is still a divided country.
- Blake
Nobody said it wasn't a divided country, Blake. I'm sorry you think the map is trying to say otherwise. The title of the post and the legend on the maps clearly state that they display the *movement* from 2004 to 2008, rather than a straight-up 2008 snapshot.

@Bill - I think this makes sense. The democratic platform tends to favor public projects like education and mass transit, which make more sense in densely populated areas.

Public transportation makes less sense in rural areas. I should have come up with some better examples. A few others: sewer systems, curb-side recycling. Fortunately though, we have different levels of government, which helps eliminate some of these problems.

"Netflix on TiVo will be available to TiVo Series3, TiVo HD, and TiVo HD XL owners. The two companies will start testing the new service today in “several thousand” U.S. households, and they anticipate it will be widely available in early December (read: “Hey! Please ignore your cable DVR and buy a TiVo this holiday.”)."

- Michael Markman
Interesting. As a Mac/Tivo household, I'd been avoiding Netflix because of their lame Mac support. If Netflix/Tivo will do HD downloads, they may take some of the business that I've been giving to iTunes via the AppleTV.
- Kevin Pedraja
Kevin, I assume you heard that Netflix started supporting macs for instant viewing earlier this week?
- Kevin Fox
Well, I'm glad it is coming to my Xbox since Tivo seems to have dropped all support for Series2
- Sidney
Kevin: Y, I did. Seems like they are working hard to win me as a customer. ;)
- Kevin Pedraja
TiVo's a great platform but it's still too expensive. $12.99 per month or $399 additional for lifetime on top of the box is steep. If you buy an XBox 360 you get just as good of a box without the monthly fee or steep additional upfront charge. Buy a cheap TV tuner and put it in your PC and you basically have the same thing. Plus the new XBox 360s will stream HD Netflix which the TiVo hasn't announced that it will offer yet.
- Thomas Hawk
Agreed with Thomas, Tivo is too expensive. Netflix, on the other hand, is a fantastic value for a great service
- Eric P
The only reason I pay for FiOS TV is the 2 or 3 times a year that Notre Dame football is on ESPN instead of network TV. So I'm basically paying almost $800 a year to watch 2 or 3 games that I could just go to a bar for. That's insane.
- Matt
I think TiVo is worth it. I've used Time Warner's DVR and it is absolutely terrible. I've also used MythTV (3 years ago) and had bad experiences with buggy software (maybe it's gotten better, I don't know.)
- Benjamin Golub
Tivo is definately worth it for me...but i'm not sure if I'll upgrade. I got my series 2 for free some time back and just had to concern myself with the monthly fee which actually came out cheaper than my cable DvR but I'm not sure if I'll pay for a new box when this one dies.
- Sidney
I just built a PC a couple weeks ago that I have set up in my home theater via HDMI to my TV. I've been using XBMC Atlantis on Vista x64. It's absolutely fantastic. Highly recommended over Windows Media Center. Plays everything!
- Matt
@kevinfox, I just tried and it still says I need a Windows PC to 'Watch it Now" and lets not forget their news release states watch it now will only support Intel Macs.
- Sidney
Just tried it myself. Says Mac support will launch before the end of 2008. I guess it was just an announcement, not a release.
- Kevin Fox
guess since I still run 3 G4's I'm happy I have an xbox
- Sidney
Apparently if you read the fine-print on the Xbox360/Netflix service, it requires that you are an Xbox Live "Gold" subscriber - so there IS an additional fee involved, it's not "free".
- G. Sigh
@George, that's right. You have to be a live gold member which is chump that MSFT requires this in my opinion. That tacks $50 a year onto the price of the XBox service, but discounted gold service is available out there if you look for it.
- Thomas Hawk
wow...I have to have xbox gold membership. A service I'm already paying for... That's like saying, "you've got to buy Tivos service to get netflix! OMB!". Sorry, the 3$ and change I pay for xbox gold is cheaper than my 12.99 a month to tivo. I think this is a no brainer. Of course you have To pay for the service
- Sidney
I still think it's short sighted for MSFT to require the gold membership. They should be doing everything that they can to get people hooked up on this for now and then if need be require the membership later. They won't make enough more money by requiring the membership now and it will hurt adoption. A poor decision to require this on MSFT's part.
- Thomas Hawk
oh believe you me...if MS made it NOT require the Gold Membership and then later required it THAT would cause a huge stink.
- Sidney
Thomas: XBox still isn't a DVR. I hate the Comcast DVR. HATE. IT. With a passion that burns hotter than a thousand suns. Plus, the XBox is noisy as hell. Sounds like a freight train most of the time, which is OK when I'm playing a game, but sux for movies. I love my TivoHD. Warts and all (it has a few).
- Kevin Pedraja
I guess I look at this a bit differently though too. I don't see it as an added benefit to Xbox 360 but to Xbox Live Gold. Simply another benefit. I could almost say the same thing for Tivo outside of the fact you have to have certain hardware to even utilize many of their new services...I'm starting to be prejudiced against all these companies trying to force my hand to "upgrade" to new hardware to get their full services. Tivo with Netflix, Netflix with Intel Macs...my old hardware is running great...
- Sidney
@Kevin, the new XBox 360s are *far* quieter than the original boxes. I agree that the first gen XBox 360s were noisy -- not any more though. An XBox 360 is not a DVR, but it can easily be one when connected to a Media Center PC. The DVR interface is just as good as TiVos without having to pay TiVo $12.99 per month or $399 up front.
- Thomas Hawk
Thomas: That's a good solution for somebody who uses PCs, I suppose. But I'm a Mac guy. And I won't be switching any time soon (read: til death). ;)
- Kevin Pedraja
good point Kevin, I use a MacBook Pro as my primary computer and there is definitely a lot to like about Macs (although I may switch back to a PC when I ugrade my notebook eventually) still though, most of the mainstream world is on PCs which leads me to believe that MSFT is still best positioned to dominate the living room in the next 24 months.
- Thomas Hawk
Apple has the chops to make a best-of-breed convergence box, but it's completely against their business goals to make a PVR and so, lacking that piece to the puzzle, they can't make a grand slam in this space. Who here thinks they'd be willing to make such a short-term short-circuit of the iTunes TV profit model in exchange for long-term set-top dominance?
- Kevin Fox
You're right Kevin, Apple *could*, but likely won't. Still, Apple should understand what dominance in the hardware market means. They've made a heck of a lot more money selling iPods/iPhones than they have on iTunes. I still think it's short sighted on their part. People bought iPods because they could play mp3s, the most popular format of the day. Today's most popular TV formats are not buying Apple's content but Netflix, pirated video files, self recorded free HDTV with a DVR, etc.
- Thomas Hawk
Kevin, Thomas: The key here, as with everything Apple, is hardware sales. I could actually see Apple introducing a streaming service to iTunes and upgrading the AppleTV to support it. As for a PVR/DVR, it wouldn't be a huge step technically to include a tuner and a bigger HD on an AppleTV to create one, but I don't think they'll do that anytime soon. Or at least not until the cable companies truly adopt the next gen, set-top agnostic CableCard platform. I just don't see Apple wanting to negotiate with ..
- Kevin Pedraja
... the Comcasts and Cablevisions of the world to certify their device.
- Kevin Pedraja
I am sort of happy about this. I still cling to Tivo, there is nothing like it for DVR, and I think it makes it worth the fee (just barely). The problem I have is that they put "ads" on the screen when I pay a monthly fee. Not being a netflix user (yet), I don't see this as a huge deal, as I already have the ability to download from Amazon. HD would be a plus, but I think the charges would be too steep for me to justify it. I have also been considering dropping Tivo and going to XBMC exclusively.
- Tim Hoeck
The temptation is there to "Shift Refresh" the TiVo and see if I get this enabled... but so far, nothing.
- Louis Gray
@Kevin P, if you get Connect360 you can connect your mac to your xbox 360 as well.

FINALLY! I think a similar deal almost went through four years ago but didn't. The TiVo HD is rapidly becoming the device of choice, what with superb live-TV handling, recording, Amazin video store integration, YouTube, and now Netflix.
- Kevin Fox
We recently gave back the Comcast DVR for a lifetime subscription TiVo HD. For the record, if you get them refurbished through TiVo.com, the break-even point is just under three years. But having my beloved TiVo interface back is well worth that cost!
- Jeff Eddings
We have the foresight, but we don't have the service yet. Can I shift-refresh my TiVo?

"Adam picked a US city out of a hat, and started there literally from scratch: with nothing but the clothes on his back, $25 in his pocket, and an empty gym bag. His previous life and associations, even his driver’s license, were left behind. He began unemployed and living in a homeless shelter. The goal was to achieve, within a year, a furnished apartment, a car, $2500 in savings, and—most important—a path to continue improving his situation."
- Paul Buchheit
Adam achieved his goals, but it's not clear what that means for Ehrenreich's project. Perhaps it merely confirms that women are systematically underpaid, e.g. in 2006 women's median income was about 75% of men's.
- Jeremy Hylton
I haven't read the book (nor had I heard of it). It sounds very interesting. I have read Nickel and Dimed. One potential difference seems to be the time scale. Ehrenreich only spent 3-6 months in one place, while Shephard spent a whole year in one place. There are also factors such as the general economic situation at the time they did their experiments. And there are some decent paying jobs such as construction that require a fair amount of physical strength, which could rule out many women.

Its great to think that after the division between candidates, parties and America in the past months, this sort of event could occur. I loved it! On Wednesday the S&P dropped 9%. It was the 3rd time in less than a month that it dropped over 7.5%. Since my S&P data only goes back to 1960, I checked out the Dow to see if it had ever dropped 7.5% 3 times in one month. It had. Once. In the 1929 picture you see above. While history never plays out exactly the same I’m sure everyone is wondering how the current picture resolved itself in 1929. Was the initial crash low broken?
