It's not just the quality of schools and student achievement at issue here. It's what's being taught and how. The curricula, the values and the philosophical approach to education matter even more. Parents have strongly differing views on that. Over the years, public schools have de-emphasized basic academics and educational rigor — cognitive learning — in favor of social engineering and what the teachers' colleges call affective learning — how students feel. That's why American students are falling behind their foreign counterparts. We have a societal consensus that education should be universal and publicly funded. But that doesn't mean it must be delivered in a monopoly of government schools. That kind of centralized control has created the current, bureaucratic one-size-fits-all system tailor-made for unions and with a prevailing culture marked by a distinctly liberal bias.

"On one hand, it is pleasing to see RJR Communications reaching out to non-traditional media to solicit investment in a relatively traditional media publication. The magazine is a great product and highly relative to the black community for more than one reason. I personally believe that the leadership in charge of its innovation needs a “fresh perspective” on where black media is and needs to be to meet the needs of its target audience. I would love to see the Blacksonville Community Network develop strategic partnerships with print media and cultural outlets to establish the “sexy digital packaging” needed to appeal to the next generation of urban American."

We would love to host Boston's debaters here in Jacksonville, Florida."

That race remains a serious obstacle in the job market for African-Americans may seem to some people a jarring contrast to decades of progress by blacks, culminating in President Barack Obama's election. But there is ample evidence that racial inequities remain when it comes to employment. Black joblessness has long far outstripped that of whites. And strikingly, the disparity for the first 10 months of this year, as the recession has dragged on, has been even more pronounced between those with college degrees and those without. Education, it seems, does not level the playing field -- in fact, it seems to have made it more uneven.

It was just a matter of time until teens flocked to Twitter in the hopes of earning the attention of their idols and more importantly, finding that in the process, their friends were also active in the same network leading to existing and new connections in a new found place. Each time teen-focused personalities created an account on Twitter, their fans would follow suit.

The study found the educational benefits of participation in urban debate to be even more pronounced for school-age African American males. African American male students participating in urban debate were 70 percent more likely to graduate from high school, three times less likely to drop out, 50 percent more likely to reach the ACT college-readiness benchmark for English, and 70 percent more likely to reach the ACT benchmark for Reading than non-debaters, even after accounting for eighth grade achievement.
