I think the later placement of the apostrophe is to indicate that it's more than one syllable, you know, 'cuz it is. It's like 3 syllables, actually, so perhaps there should be two apostrophes. Now my Eastern Kentuckian friends say something that sounds like "yoonz" or "yuns," (you + 'uns), and I'd really like to know the spelling for THAT one.

the first time i visited my husband's family in philadelphia i was snickered at for using "y'all", because in philly it's "yous". summary: everybody's crazy.

Here in the Chi we usually say 'yous' and I think it's for 'all you guys.' Somehow girls are included in there. :) Still laughing at 'you'uns' never heard it before. I've heard of young'uns only
