From Mr. Conservative George Will: "I suppose the McCain campaign's hope is that when there's a big crisis, people will go for age and experience," George Will said. "The question is who in this crisis looked more presidential, calm and unflustered. It wasn't John McCain, who, as usual, substituting vehemence for coherence said let's fire somebody and picked one of the most experienced and conservative people in the administration." - cjmart
Idle Unfounded Speculation: many conservatives are cutting their losses and torpedoing the McCain campaign because he was never their guy. And, while Obama will win the Presidency, they're betting he cannot handle it...or betting that world economic/etc. issues will conspire to make it unhandle-able. Meanwhile, they dig their heels in to fuck with the Obama presidency over the next four years while they prepare to get a true-red conservative to the top of the ticket in 2012. - Chester
It will be hard for Obama, after four years of Democratic rule of the Presidency and Congress, to come back after four ugly years and say "re-elect me because I've done such a wonderful job." I think Obama isn't very concerned about that, though. There are two things he loves to do: make speeches and make money. Being an exPresident will help both immensely. - ComicList
Yes, because the Democrats in power for the last two years have done wonders. - Spencer
Yes, that ABSOLUTELY makes sense. Obama is all about the money. Because that's why you take your Ivy League education and go to work as a community manager rather than joining a huge law firm. For the money. - Cyndy
+12 Cyndy. - AJ Kohn
You mean working for ACORN, which is the largest voter fraud organization in the U.S. ;) - Spencer
It's hilarious for people to try to contrast Obama with McCain by making Obama sound like the greedy one. :) As far as I know Obama didn't leave his first wife to marry a fabulously wealthy (and more attractive) one. Obama knows how many houses he owns and he owns one car. I'm sorry, but you don't get to say Obama is the greedy one after the money... - Internet's Tad
@Spencer: Want to compare fraud by association? You want to go with Obama/ACORN. I counter with McCain/S&L-Keating Five. - AJ Kohn
@Tad: +7. - AJ Kohn
Republicans talking about voter fraud is HILARIOUS! How about the Voter Caging going on in Michigan where the Republicans are challenging voter registrations for every name that shows up on a foreclosure list. Because, you know, when people are down it's the best time to kick 'em, and the poors don't vote Republican anyway. - Jason Carreira
@Jason: +1. I was going to reply that way but didn't have time to dig up a specific instance. - AJ Kohn
The fake conservatives here (Soulhuntre, Charles LePage, Scott Spencer) can't deal with the words of a real conservative, George Will: "The question is who in this crisis looked more presidential, calm and unflustered. It wasn't John McCain, who, as usual, substituting vehemence for coherence said let's fire somebody and picked one of the most experienced and conservative people in the administration." What -- no response? - Sean McBride
"substituting vehemence for coherence" -- in four words, George Will managed to sum up everything that is wrong and anti-conservative about John McCain. He's like George W. Bush, but worse. Four more years of Bush-style governance, and the United States will be permanently ruined. - Sean McBride
If by "what is important" you mean "moving to Brasil" then yes. - Jason Carreira
@Gregory: Agree regarding consumption, eduction, competition, personal responsibility etc. It's why I'm against the bailout. Would prefer *that* collapse to the harmful isolation and nationalism that might exist under McCain. - AJ Kohn
@Gregory: Completely agree. - AJ Kohn
I would characterize this discussion less as "tears into" and more as "has a measured conversation about the shortcomings of" -- the kind of rational discourse that is all too lacking on the scream-a-minute cable news channels these days. I'm no conservative (mostly), but I'd rather listen to George Will than Bill O'Reilly any day. - Heidi Moon
Bill O'Reilly is no conservative. If it got him higher ratings (and more $$$) to do some other shtick, he'd do it, but he's carved out his niche and he's profitable at it. - Jason Carreira

@clarke We, the public, do. Tabloid journalism sells, so the media gives it to us. And I'm not sure it is tabloid, besides. We give our opinion all the time around here; what is the difference betwixt them besides the media platforms? - Michael W. May
Why are people reading this as if Matt Damon is trying to run for office? He is stating his opinion. It's freaking hilarious whether you agree or not. Just f*cking laugh....geez - Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
@Jim @clarke Don't discount someone's thoughts because they happen to be a celebrity. Damon is no slouch, he attended Cambridge Rindge and Latin School in Cambridge, graduating in 1988. He attended Harvard University the same year but left to pursue acting. I'm not saying to sit on the edge of your seat to hear what celebrities say, but we all have a chance to have a voice in the debate whether we are celebrities or not. - tagami
Matt Damon is much smarter than most politicians -- it's not even a contest. - Sean McBride
@mel @michael: the last actor I believe we put in the office was Reagan? and well the press was different then. If these actors/actresses did what they said 1/4 of Hollywood wouldn't be living in the US anymore. The smart ones, don't publicly express their opinion. Anyone who routinely is in the press is a celebrity, no matter if it's a tabloid or not. Scoble is a tech celebrity; would you vote for whomever Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Robert Scoble or Larry Ellison publicly recommended? - clarke thomas
@clarke I am saying I wouldn't discount their opinion out of hand. - Michael W. May
@michael I'd agree on that; but I believe too many say 'well X said they were stupid' so I'm not voting for them. - clarke thomas
@mel: I don't care what he's saying; I care that people consider his opinion more then others' because he's a celeb (& people think b/c of that he's got pull) [oh and I don't give 2 sh*ts about a VP anyhow; they're there to run the House and be the International spokesperson] - clarke thomas
mel, just because I find what he said hilarious, does not mean I can't also believe what he is saying. - Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
Clarke, do you just comment to entertain yourself, or are we expected to gain any intelligent perspective from your comments? Just curious. - jcunwired
Clarke -- I hold Matt Damon's opinions in much higher regard than Sarah Palin's because he is clearly more intelligent than Palin and makes much more sense. Anyone who is a creationist has by definition removed himself or herself from the world of intelligent discourse. (Besides, see Good Will Hunting -- clearly the man is a genius of the highest order. :)) - Sean McBride
@Jody well I have had 1/2 a bottle of Malbec; but anyhow my comments are not based on what Damon said. Sadly from what I read, hear on the streets, or in the office - people do take to heart what celebs say - as if they(celebs) have any better idea then any other US citizen. Just because they have $$$ or had dinner with a candidate doesn't mean they know much. - clarke thomas
One should also add that Matt Damon is an honest, good and decent human being -- for real. It comes through in his work. He's probably too good to be in politics. - Sean McBride
the man makes some good points...how you like them apples - Ryan
Not to be a killjoy - I'm an Obama supporter and all, but, being a critical citizen who pledges allegiance to neither party, i have to point out Matt Damon is just repeating common media hype about Sarah Palin. Do I want to see Sarah Palin in office? God, no. But do I think the criticism being offered about her (as well as every other candidate, past, present and future, McCain and Obama included) is superficial at best and meant to create a knee-jerk reaction? Definitely. - Adam Bohannon
@clarke why can't a celebrity have an opinion? He's an artist, he should have an opinion...and speak it. I value it as much as I do yours. We're talking about it because it's interesting. - Ryan

Here's the officer's response (I haven't watched it yet): http://video.google.com/videopl... - Kevin Fox
This video was surprisingly interesting -- definitely worth watching. Part 2 (the response by the cop, who basically agrees with everything the lawyer says) is also very good: http://www.youtube.com/watch... - Paul Buchheit
CSI is the funniest show for confessions, suspects constantly admit to things that either aren't crimes or the police have no evidence of them doing, it'sd be silly if it weren't at least a little true. Everyone should be aware of these things though, if they'll send Martha Stewart to jail, what do you think will happen to you? - Richard Lawler from twhirl
On a similar vein is a how-to guide to handling roadside police encounters: http://www.youtube.com/watch... This video is very in favor of the phrase "I don't consent to any searches" and implies that staying silent can be interpreted as consent, making a warrantless search permissible. - Kevin Fox
Chris Rock's suggestions: http://www.youtube.com/watch... - Brian Johns
Bjorn: I find making friends with cops is a good life-strategy. I've been mugged at gun-point twice, and I very much value their help. You also learn interesting trivia. Guess why cops run their fingers in front of your eyes? On Alcohol, most people's eyes will move jerkily sideways. On some drugs, they jerk vertically. Try with friends some time... - Mitchell Tsai
Mitchell: I have friends in law enforcement, some of whom I worked very closely with in years past. I am always very friendly and respectful during police encounters. Having said that, however (unlike most folk) I don't fold like a lawn chair every time I see a badge (e.g. consent to searches.) - Anthony Citrano
I've had friends with fancy cars (esp. women) get pulled over for no other reason than the officer wanted to look at the car/woman. Definitely good & bad in the police force. - Mitchell Tsai
I watched this whole video, interesting. - Jeremiah Owyang
Both parts 1 and 2 are worthwhile. Re the fifth amendment: "Too many, even those who should be better advised, view this privilege as a shelter for wrongdoers. They too rapidly assume that those who invoke it are either guilty of crime or commit perjury in claiming the privilege." - Robert Konigsberg
Yeah Robert, exactly.. I read recently that something like 3/4 of drug arrests are a result of consent searches - e.g. where the officer did not have sufficient cause, but the permission of the searchee waives that need. e.g. "You don't have any drugs or guns in the car, do you?" "No." "Then you don't mind if I take a look, do you?".... - Anthony Citrano
I didn't think that the cop was quite as good as the law professor, but it was interesting to hear some of the tricks they use. I wonder if this video will really have any effect, and if so, whether or not cops will be mad about its existence? I thought it was funny that in the first minute of talking, the cop got half the class to admit to speeding. - Robert Felty
