"Since the launch of Google Latitude earlier this year, we've been getting a lot of feature requests. One of the most popular ideas was for Latitude to keep track of location history, allowing you (but not your friends) to see where you've been at any point in time. Another popular idea was to notify you when you're near your Latitude friends so you can easily meet up or grab lunch. Today, we're happy to introduce both Google Location History and Google Location Alerts (beta) to let you do even more with Latitude."

My brother in law in the Philippines can't be dissuaded from naming his son Elmo. I hope that unborn boy is ready to be tormented for the rest of his life. Why do parents do that to their kids?

You know, in my heart I hope that people like NPH who seem just so damn awesome on the screen are just as cool in real life. Anyone met the fellow in person?

I'm sure he's a decent guy. Never met him, though.

Last year at Bumbershoot, I did a ton of walking in Nike Frees and -- maybe the shoes contributed, maybe they didn't -- I got a mild case of plantar fasciitis. I still like Frees, but I try not to spend all my time in them. (which to be fair to the shoe, is generally not recommended anyways.)

@April: My bf ended up buying Vibrams after talking to you about them at Bindu's party. He really likes them!
- Jess Lee
I saw someone where those shoes yesterday at the Ninja Warrior tryouts..I don't know..they looked like they wouldn't give very good arch support...
- Anna Lynn M.
after stubbing my toe today while barefooted i wonder if the the Vibrams help protect against that at all?
- Chris Heath
Anna, I think the idea is that your foot has muscles and that "arch support" is actually harmful because it causes those muscles to atrophy and no longer do their job.
- Paul Buchheit
Still, with our modern shoe-supported feet, I don't think it would be wise to go headlong into more barefoot-style shoes all at once.
- Andrew C
Yes, start easy. Luckily, I've been wearing flip flops for years, so my feet are already good :)
- Paul Buchheit
I prefer to remain barefoot as much as possible - always have done as a kid... I met a guy wearing this and they looked weird for some reason :S

"In District 9, the ingenious new science fiction action film, First Contact is nothing like what we expected. There's no grand entrance as in Close Encounters of the Third Kind, or even a structured invasion like in Independence Day.”The aliens, in fact, arrive in quite similar fashion to how many illegal immigrants show up on our shores. Hurt, hungry, and desperate for help. The film begins 28 years after the aliens' arrival in 1982, when their spaceship suddenly appeared above Johannesburg, South Africa. The Prawns, as they are derisively nicknamed by humans, have been leaving in a settlement called District 9. And they have become restless and dangerous."

"District 9 takes our preconceived notions of alien encounters and turns them inside out. It’s as much an immigration story as it is a sci–fi, alien invasion tale. Yes, it stands on its own as a compelling, edge–of–your–seat chase thriller. If you want to enjoy it on that level, go right ahead. But look behind the set pieces and scaly aliens. There is so much more going on there. It’s...

I just got back from seeing District 9 and all I can say is.. WOW.. near the end you could have heard a pin drop in the theater. the ending took a severe left turn that I don't think anyone saw coming. and people were coming out and everyone was just like WOW.
- Scratch5150
I've seen this, and I'm not sure why people are raving about it. It's a lot more realistic than most alien movies in terms of how things might actually be, and if that makes people think then that's great, but the ending seemed a let down to me. I found myself saying it merely wasn't bad...
- Tanath
As a south African this movie touches a deep root with our countrys past. In fact it is a reinterpreation of apartheid which gripped our country for over 40 years, where white people did exactly to black people what the humans do to the aliens in D9. in south Africa black people were forced to live in shanty towns and were blocked from white society. They had to carry passes, if they...

FF was the cutting edge whereas FB is quickly becoming the mainstream. Unfortunately, the mainstream does not necessarily equal innovation and pushing the envelope. We all suffer when innovation is chilled. But on the other hand, congrats to the FF crew. They made their money!

I don't get the negativity - did no one realize FriendFeed was a business? The object of a business is to sell eventually (either privately or publicly). We should be celebrating their success. This is a huge win for them, as well as Facebook. I personally think it's a huge win for the "loyal users" as well. So now we stab them in the back when they do something huge?
- Jesse Stay
Not to mention we know *nothing* about what this will mean for both services. These guys haven't let us down yet, have they?
- Jesse Stay
The FB/FF deal rocks. Total win for users and developers.
- Steve Gillmor
My comment is because they can see by the flood of responses people are not happy and this post is just a smidge tacky. People are upset and feel betrayed and they haven't addressed that, not that I expected them too. This is pretty much inline with the way they've handled every other major change but before you only had a handful of disgruntles users whereas this time I'd say the majority are upset.
- Lindsey is Fierce!
Congratulations Paul, you should have got more, but I guess $50m is nothing to sneeze at. Have a great wedding anniversary too, I'm sure you both deserve it. Much happiness - :)

Those are the kind of business meetings I could get used to - no suits... but selling to Facebook? Hmmm... Good for someone of course but I suppose we'll see where this ride takes us.

congrats on building an amazing product and incredibly passionate community! I was mad at first, but then realize that the technology was most likely sold, not the community. I'm hoping ff community will stay somewhat untouched and features that have been built into ff will be ported to fb.

Congratulations, FriendFeeders! I'm anxious to see what changes this will bring. FriendFeed is my favorite site to visit, so hopefully y'all will find a way to maintain the FF spirit somehow.

No matter the type of big change, there are those who will not like it, often simply because it's change. I for one am very pleased that two of the services I use most are joining forces, and am eager to see the new developments that come of this acquisition. Congrats to EVERYONE on the FriendFeed team. You all deserve it! You've done a great job with a small company. Now lets see what you can do with a large one :)

@Jesse Stay re: "the objective of business is to sell eventually" : Ummm, the objective of many businesses is to become profitable by providing a valuable experience to their users. Businesses that feel they can't do that are the ones that sell.

"3D photo apps are not new to the iPhone platform, but a new app from Juicy Bits looks promising in terms of making those pictures with depth a lot easier to take and view. 3D Camera 1.1 [US$1.99, click opens iTunes] is now available for iPhone OS 2.2 and 3.0 devices, and it lets you take photos that use one of three methods to create the illusion of 3D: red/cyan anaglyphs that require those funky 3D glasses, stereograms that create 3D images when your eyes look at them a certain way, and wiggle stereograms (or wiggle-grams) that use animated GIF images to provide the "depth". If you need a place to buy the goofy glasses, Juicy Bits lists several sources on their website To take the photos, you use one of two methods. If you're planning on taking an anaglyph or sterogram, you take one picture, move the iPhone camera slightly to the right, and take another photo. To make a wiggle stereogram, you point directly at the same object from two slightly different vantage points. The app...

- John Cooper
Plus, a slot design like this can't make use of the gripper 'bumps' in regular sockets. ( http://www.howstuffworks.com/questio... ) This is total design wankery with little to no consideration for the actual use cases IMO...
- Andrew C
what about safety? Im sure they could design some sort of cover for it. This is awesome...

It's sad that still so few people in America have broadband. While I'm not normally for Govt intervention, it may really be time to classify broadband internet as a utility to bring the price down enough that everyone can have access to it.
- Justin Flood @justinflood
Those are very interesting figures. It may actually support the idea of municipal broadband for free because it looks like mostly household with lower incomes would need it.
- Dave Benson
Some people are still using dial up as it meets their needs and budgetary constraints.
- David Damore
thx comcast 50 dls for a crappy 1.5 mb conection WI-Max where are u?
- Đoи яамoη
from twhirl
@admore while it may meet budgetary concerns, Dialup internet is no where near fast enough to do quite a number of things online. My concern is that children growing up without broadband now may be at a significant disadvantage to children that do grow up with it and are well versed in social media. The world is changing quickly, we can't afford to be left behind any more than we already are.
- Justin Flood @justinflood
@justinflood What about people that have access but do not use it? Life is filled with choices. Some people choose to not be involved with computers/Internet. It's hard to believe since you and I see the tremendous value/power of Internet technology. There will always be people that do not see it the way we do.
- David Damore
@admore Of course it's a choice. I know many adults who do not use the internet, and that's their choice. People can also choose to not use public electricity, public water, telephones, or other utilities, and I'm sure a number of people do. My point is that the internet has become important enough on a global scale that the US as a country should probably start looking into turning broadband access into a utility that is inexpensive enough that anyone who WANTS it can afford it.
- Justin Flood @justinflood
I choose not to have a landline phone, but its not because of price. I guess the question would be is growing up in a house without high speed Internet a detrament to a child's up bringing? Personally I couldnt imagine living without it, but much of my efforts are web centric. With more and more schools embracing technology I can see where not having this technology in the home could but a child at at distinct disadvantage.
- Rob Truman, USN Ret.
It's not only a question of income for some people, where they can not afford broadband, but there are many people who live in areas where dial-up is their only option.

- Bret Taylor
Bret, I'm not entirely convinced by the translation interface. And depending on the format of your source files, it might not be suitable at all. Unless I'm missing something here, something really important to note is that there's currently no way to download or export your TM from Google Translator Toolkit. If that is indeed the case, I can't imagine they'll get away with that for very long though.

My first thought too... kinda disappointed
- Internet's Tad
It's only the feature articles - the ones that have been properly vetted, redacted, agreed on and quality controlled (no half finished sentences and "more details needed" stuff) - from the source: "At present, there are 2,529 featured articles, of a total of 2,903,080 articles on the English Wikipedia." The full wikipedia would be 1000 times this, but most of it would be 25 line standard templates with "this article is a stump"
- Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
Featured articles are disappointing: that there are so few of them, and that so many of them are on arcane narrow topics (one painting, one book etc.)
- Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
Alix- I was thinking the same thing. My childhood set of pedias in the 80s (that were from the 60s and 70s) stacked a lot higher than that. I'm more surprised that there are only 5,000 8.5 x 11 inch double sided pages of Wikipedia information. Seems low.
