This is clearly not my cat. If this was my cat he's have one arm shoved down into the printer trying to tear up all the internal whirling bits with his bare claws.
- Soup in a TARDIS
Too Funny! Reminds me of the San Mateo Cat Shelter where one of the cats loves to sleep on top of the laster printer where the paper comes out...
- Greg Lato
1600+ to beat the FFundercats live chat thread. I think with this real time now on all threads we're going to see some truly epic comment numbers.
- Simon Wicks
Ivan, no the picture speaks for itself. ;-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Petr, I have no idea what you mean, but thank you. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
@Kol .. :] that, partially, might have been the purpose.... I don't know it exactly either. :] .. was I reflecting on a cat under the fax, and that it is hard to fax that way ... /?:] ... "underfaxing at its worst" ..
- pb:
there ya have me ! :] .... see, to be honest with you, i saw this pic couple days ago, but i let it go, without posting it ..... what does that make me? :]
- pb:
even a flat cat... faxes just can't handle the hair. You'd have to shave the cat first, else the hair will burn and stick to the drum... a mess! (I am extrapolating from transparencies, mind, i don't have access to a cat to test)
- Iphigenie
Hehe, Joelle. This is now tied for the 'likes' top stop. One more then, hehe. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Hehe, Greg. Blimey! Erm, is that not far from 500 likes now? ;-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Bloody marvelous, Kol. Wish I could like it again... too cute (and help u to 500 likes).
- Roberto Bonini
I couldn't believe it when I logged on from the morning over posting it and saw it was at something 200 likes! You all have a strange fetish with cats and fax machines, hehe. ;-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Am I the only one who saw this and their first thought was - My goodness did someone break that cats neck? It still freaks me out a little
- SteVe C
Steve, it does look a little out of place, but cats are pretty bendy. ;-)
- Kol Tregaskes
They fax much better if you flatten them first. What?
- The original Kevin
So we can put this post to rest now. :-) 505 likes final count, wow! :-D Good night all!
- Kol Tregaskes
did 3 people really un-like this? now at 506. wtf (edit: uh, oh, yeah, me and 2 + 506 others makes 509. dammit, jim, i'm an artist, not a mathematician)
- ɐ ɯıʞ sıɹɥɔ
One of the best funny cat pictures I've seen! :-)
- John Collis
Kristian, it appears to be. Hehe, John.
- Kol Tregaskes
- Maryaminaa
It's really only social convention which regards it as inappropriate, same with Xeroxing it, like one does with their b__tocks. Wait are we still talking about cats cats here or...
- The Real sofarsoShawn
OMGosh 700+ likes now!! LOL. Thank you all 702 of you. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Um... We don't really need another status feature, do we? What with Twitter, Plurk, Jaiku, YouAre, Koornk, Facebook, MySpace...
- dgw
There's already a kinda status-y thing on FriendFeed. Just post a message. On the other hand, I think there's certainly room for adding the ability to have a <160 character micro-bio, a la Twitter's bio field. I'd like the opportunity to say who I am, because sometimes my feeds don't do a good enough job of spelling it out.
- Chris Charabaruk
You can add a little user bio now. That might help.
- vimoh
Yep but no status updates. No sure it's needed but could be fun. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Just feed your status update into friendfeed from whatever service you use, why tack on another feature that will only be abused by the marketing types?
- Mr. Gunn
I learned about this because of Janis Krum's blog. He was the guy who took the photo of today's plane crash and posted it to Twitter. His blog is here: http://www.janiskrums.com/ -- want some inspiration? Think things are hopeless? Watch that video and see if don't find some inspiration. Thanks TIm Ferriss and Janis!
- Robert Scoble
The paths we find things through are pretty weird. I know Tim personally but haven't had time to get to my RSS feeds lately. But, they come to me anyway. One of the lessons I've learned in my "media snacking" journey.
- Robert Scoble
Robert - this is the first time you have made me cry - great find, thanks for sharing it.
- Ben Shoemate
Great find Robert, Nick speaks at our church all the time and all over the world, he hangs out after he speaks and he greets every single person who waits in line and gives everyone a hug. Here is Nick's site http://www.lifewithoutlimbs.org/
- Kelly Johns
I'm just grateful all survived so CNN breaking states! PTL!
- Melanie Reed
Still crying after watching this video and so angry at my self-absorbed life complaints. Today, right this very moment, this video has changed the way I view life.
- Janet-The Bottley Crue
Very inspirational. The guy has done amazing things, and I definitely get the message - right up until he starts in with the evangelism. Is it just possible he could have achieved the same things on his own - or with a support system that didn't carry the Jesus branding?
- Auntie Buttinsky Botts
Mary, I don't think it is a matter of Jesus "branding", it is his testimony, it is a genuine explanation of how he's been able to overcome his circumstances. I don't think Nick would be the man he is today if he would have "done it on his own"
- Kelly Johns
Tears in my coffee cup. Good way to start a day of opportunities for those with more. To whom much is given, much is expected. Thanks for sharing...awesome.
- Carl
Kelly, I suspect you're right. Especially since he's a preacher's kid. And I really do get that it can take a huge spiritual foundation to overcome big obstacles. But just once I'd like to see an inspirational story that doesn't turn out to be a lead-in to a Christianity message. Are we - as a culture - as Americans under the First Amendment - saying that nobody can overcome great obstacles who is not a Christian?
- Auntie Buttinsky Botts
Let's see some examples of great inspiration from the secular world - or the other religious and spiritual traditions. For instance - Stephen Hawking has lived decades longer than anyone with ALS normally would.
- Auntie Buttinsky Botts
Mary, Please rewatch this video, no where was this pushing a Christian message. I heard God, witnessing God. I believe this was more a faith in God, which is not exclusive to Christians. :)
- Janet-The Bottley Crue
True. I made the mistake of watching a second video. And - the language in the first video is the lexicon of the Christian brand: witnessing, faith, God's plan. Witnessing and the idea of God's plan for a person or a community don't exist in, for example, Judaism, and the concept of faith in Judaism is rather nebulous, at least in the Reform tradition.
- Auntie Buttinsky Botts
Just saw this post randomly. Hope things are well.
- Janis Krums
Kevin - that is an awesome logo!!!!!
- Susan Beebe
+102 for Bill Waterson references in picture Kevin or words Sinterclas
- SteVe C
cute but what happened to festivus this year?
- Laura Norvig
Merry Christmas to the FriendFeed team. You guys rock! FriendFeed reacts quickly and you're adding wonderful features all the time (Thanks soooo much for the "edit" feature.)
- Mitchell Tsai
Happy Holidays FF crue -- you've made this an excellent and memorable year for many of us. Facebook couldn't have done it without you! :)
- Christopher Galtenberg
w00t you gave me the best online year in 15 years!!! ;p Thanks a lot, everyone, for what you've done here XD
- Zu from AOD
Sigh. Sometimes it is the little touches, like seasonal logos or easter eggs, that mark a site as a living project, and that you really miss when the developers have all moved on to something else.
- Michael R. Bernstein
"The Volkswagen Microbus is a classic - even to those of us born after its time. Arguably unlike the newly remade Beetle, this remake of a VW classic is remarkably true to the original on the outside - but on the inside it is a bio-diesel hybrid stuffed full of high tech gadgetry and eco-friendly innovations."

Very intriguing. How much steel is in that thing? Chris, that would be my next question after fuel consumption: how safe is this thing? And I agree, when we can go back to making transportation that costs less than a small home, we may have achieved something amazing. ;)
- Melanie Reed
However, I have heard (and I'm not remembering where at the moment) that there has been a movement growing of people seeking alternative housing and substituting things like this as the new "mobile" home.
- Melanie Reed
Everyone is loving this! We should have an FF one and use it to travel to all the FFers around the World (like Pea seems to be doing ;-)). Hehe. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
I've owned 5 VWs, two of which were split window vans. I'd love to have another, this is awesome!
- Rick Bucich
from twhirl
I have had more VWs than other cars...starting with a 71 Superbeetle, and a Split Window Microbus. I would LOVE to have something like this.
- Kreg Steppe
Good for grandparents to visit grandchildren and children through the European continent (or another one as well)...nomadism-revival!
- Isabelle Ayel
wow i posted this a while back and now can't seem to find it for some reason. friendfeed's search function really sucks!
- Cee Bee
I'd like to have something like this, something small. What do you really need? A bed, perhaps a TV and room for your computer. Then you can live anywhere you like, in theory.
- Kol Tregaskes
Who is this Canadian designer Alexandre Verdier? Seems like he is on Facebook, Linked In but I can't seem to find anything else about him.
- Brian Sullivan
We had a wesvalia built Micro when I was a kid. I loved that thing. It was a little flimsily built; but boy it was perfect for my family of campers and road-tripping warriors. Too bad this one is so pricey

I use it. I like it. Just wish there was an easier way to change the calendar icons and allow for thumbnails. Of course, that would immediately reduce the loading speed…

totally got a cool idea for new schwag... two items: for new Moms, a friend feed shirt with slots for easy feeding of infants... and for new Pops like Louis, nipple with bottle attachment inserts with one nipple coming out of the first f and the second nipple coming out of the second d... saweet!
- Rob Reed
FF schwag and twins! best picture of the day!
- Sarah Perez
Mega awesome ;) Congratulations to you and your family, like the Friendfeed t-shirt ;)
- Mario Olckers
Tiny... little... eentsy... lumps of yum. There, my estrogen has officially shown itself.
- Carla Thompson
No way - they have FF onesies??? How do I get my hands on one of those?
- Jesse Stay
The Gray family Babies!!!! Sarah and Mathew look sooo cute in your arms! and sooo tiny my goodness!!... still LOL @ Rob's wacky comment..whoa!
- Susan Beebe
Not official yet I think, but the screenshot is real and provides some info. The "Porting Tumblr" tab explains that you can use Tumblr themes as is, but all Tumblr blocks in the code won´t be supported at first.
- ɯɥøq sɐɯoɥʇ
Can we use widgets and javascript code?
- Svartling
I think it will spawn quite a large number of available themes and probably cannibalize Tumblr quite a bit. @Garry: Sorry, but it wasn't a very well kept secret;) Google blogsearch showed it to me on a search I had surrounding Posterous.
- ɯɥøq sɐɯoɥʇ
from BuddyFeed
@Svartling: No, not at first it says. But knowing Posterous it'll probably come along.
- ɯɥøq sɐɯoɥʇ
from BuddyFeed
I like posterous very much. Just hope it will survive from the Internet censorship here in china. Oh, the Chinese Great Firewall is sucks. There are so many victims, Twitter, friendfeed, facebook, YouTube, blogger, picasa web... Too many to count. Sigh...
- yezi
from fftogo
So, when does this theming feature become available? ;-)
- Rubin Sfadj
But since you did, custom themes is going to be nice !
- Wayne Sutton
from iPhone
It's been leaking for a while now ... any update on projected availability? There have been a number of new features added since this was posted here.
- Allan Besselink
On the left is Firefox on Windows XP. On the right is Firefox on OS X. Same laptop screen. This is why I feel yucky when I have to work in Windows now. Granted, I don't have ClearType installed on the Windows side. But it doesn't make things THAT much better. IE7 is even worse.
- Paul Reynolds
Pay no mind to what that text actually says, I'm still editing it :o)
- Paul Reynolds
I thought Firefox did its own text rendering regardless of the OS. Hmm. This clearly shows that I was wrong.
- James (@willia4)
Meanwhile, I'm missing out on low priced commodity hardware and a large selection of game titles. (Figured I'd beat any Windows zealots to the punch)
- Paul Reynolds
Windows: it's all about minesweeper. You think I'm kidding...
- FFing Enigma
I have noticed things are a lot clearer on my MBP than on my PC. Font and graphics-wise. It's refreshing.
- Araceli
Araceli - Yeah. OS X's text rendering is a trillion miles ahead of anything out of Redmond.
- James (@willia4)
My fonts are on Vista and they look TONS better than what you are seeing. ClearType DOES make a huge difference to me. I can't use a computer without it. Reminds me too much of 1994.
- Robert Scoble
Hell, I'd even take XP in VMWare over an actual PC any day
- Dom Barnes
Why is there a fuzz filter on the one to the right? How annoying. :)
- Daniel Bruce
Maybe I've been in glasses too long, but the OSX displays always make me feel like my eyes are out of focus...
- Alex Conner
wrong use of "you're" in the "If you don't understand these guidelines" paragraph. Should be "your"
- Imabug
I have to say I far prefer the non-cleartype one. Is something wrong with me? =p
- Daniel Bruce
imo, this discussion is of... dubious value. 1.) most folks would prefer the rendering that they're most familiar with- personally, I prefer the vista/ff rendering, and find the osx rendering artificially bold. 2.) the exact clear type (or osx font rendering) settings is hardware dependant. what looks great on your monitor may end up looking crappy when screenshotted and displayed on my monitor, due to things like pixel ordering, DPI, resolution, screen technology, etc.
- Chris Hollander
This, this right here, beautiful text rendering, is the one single reason I'm lusting after OS X. Safari on windows has the OS X style rendering, so it's possible on windows; just that Msoft has adopted clarity over font smoothing. Joel from Fogcreek has a good article detailing how the company philosophy is reflected in the font smoothing choices: http://www.joelonsoftware.com/items...
- vijay
I went from programming full time (a heavy text reading occupation) exclusively on Windows for 8 years to OS X and it was something to get used to... it seemed blurry. But now Windows feels to aliased and clunky to me.
- Paul Reynolds
How does it look on Linux? ;) When I first moved to the Mac, the fonts did feel slightly blurry, but they feel perfect now. Depends on what you've been used to.
- Paul Grav
If that's all I'm missing then I'm pretty sure I'll survive. I can adjust my fonts in windows, turn off cleartype or turn it back on, so it'll be ok.
- Jason Shultz
from twhirl
At first I thought the point was showing that based on browser/OS sniffing, the Baker's Dog website WAS charging $4.95 to Windows customers and WAS NOT charging Mac visitors at all! Then I realized the same text flowed differently and was outside the screenshot. Now that would have been a new kind of Windows tax.
- Micah
Hrmm... Micah... the wheels are turning. Maybe a discount if you're using Firefox (read: not IE) to buy your dog treats? :oB
- Paul Reynolds
C'mon, XP is a trillion years old. Get Win7 and enjoy it's nice font smoothing. And here's a great article for those who is praising Mac font rendering: http://www.joelonsoftware.com/items.... Mac and Win font rendering mechanisms both have advantages, Mac is more print-optimised, while Win is screen-optimised.
- Kirill Petrovsky
so...we're supposed to spend $500 more for a computer that renders texts differently? I think I'll use ClearType or other fonts on Windows and treat myself to another tech gadget.
- brainno722 (Peter)
I never posted bigger pics to FriendFeed so I don't know. The only way to find is to try it.
- LouCypher
Been doing it since recently. Quite effective. Definitely more reliable than TwitPic. Except that there is no way to post *ONLY* FF photo posts to Twitter.
- vimoh
Maybe it's due to fact that FF is not a photo hosting service.
- LouCypher
Yeah, so your pictures are shared on Twitter, commented and 'Liked' on FriendFeed. Great!
- Thierry R. Andriamirado
and you can share multiple pictures from FriendFeed.
- LouCypher
What about TweetPhoto, now that it's finally open?
- Tyson Key
This works GREAT! Now if I could only select *which* FF entries I want to ship to Facebook, I'd be all set.
- Phil Glockner
I agree with Phil.. even if I could tag things with #FB it would help. My friends are already overwhelmed with my geekness, flooding them with ALL of my FF content would seal the deal!!
- Chris Myles
Ben: I am only getting one-liners what else do I have change - a privacy setting somewhere?
- Peter du Toit (S.Africa)
I've tried this several times without success, will try again... Thanks, Ben.
- Kol Tregaskes
it will post to facebook..but does not show pics if it has them in it.
- (jeff)isageek
Woohoo! Thanks for getting this working! :)
- Keith Bourgoin
Still doesn't work for me I'm afraid. It stopped posting a few weeks back and no amount of removing/readding/checking settings helps. Not even your awesome link :(
- Alex Lomas
Alex: has just stopped working for me too! Everything is fine with the application ie it shows up on the tab but does not publish into the news feed... interesting...
- Peter du Toit (S.Africa)
@Benjamin: Thanks for the tip - it always used to be set and I've double checked via your link and it still is. How long should things take to show up?
- Alex Lomas
Thanks Ben this was not set on my side about to check, thanks for the help!
- Peter du Toit (S.Africa)
hey its working for me now!!! rock on. pic and all!
- (jeff)isageek
Hm. The pics I just posted to FF never showed up in FB. Anyone know if this should be working?
- Keith Bourgoin
from IM
@Benjamin - Wow, thanks for looking into that. Still not showing up on my wall, so I guess it must be something else :(
- Alex Lomas
@Benjamin - Woohoo! They've appeared! But the stories were way down the bottom of the wall amongst posts from early this morning so I didn't initially see them. Maybe something to do with time zones (I'm in the UK)?
- Alex Lomas
Ben: that solved it for me too! Pics also showing! Thanks for the help! 1 quick question for you :) when do you think we will be able to add the FF app to Facebook Public Profiles because that would be awesome!
- Peter du Toit (S.Africa)
"Learn how Google Reader can help create a lifestream feed by merging multiple feeds into one. It’s easier than combining feeds in Yahoo Pipes."
- Kol Tregaskes
from Bookmarklet
I don't know if my thinking on this is right. I wanted to post my FF items to a Blogger blog in order to save them in case they "go away." I thought there was some way I could do this automatically, but I can't figure out how. Second, I set up a posterous and put that in the reader. That works fine and I put my new, so far empty blog in the reader. I guess I just need to know how to get stuff onto my blog from FriendFeed. Any ideas?
- Kimber Scott
And then read these tips from Svartling here: http://ff.im/6mh5s (the main one being to add everyone to a group so they can see your shared items and are allowed to comment on them).
- Kol Tregaskes
sounds like an easy way to create a "clipping" service for an intranet minus all the hassles and money
- Glenn Batuyong
careful with that functionality: if you publish the link to such a tag/folder, and people go to that link's share page (the typical google reader share page) and choose "subscribe", they won't get 1 feed, they will get a new folder with all these feeds automatically subscribed. Not what I would have expected!
- Iphigenie
Yep, you can see the feeds by clicking on the + button at the top.
- Kol Tregaskes
We've been acquired by Facebook! We are really excited about joining the Facebook team. (Note: FriendFeed will continue to operate - see the blog post for details)
- Bret Taylor
from Bookmarklet
"FriendFeed.com will continue to operate normally for the time being. We're still figuring out our longer-term plans for the product with the Facebook team." Those are NOT encouraging things to read as a FF user.
- S of 2C
Sniff... not sure if I'm excited about this. But I have enormous respect for the FriendFeed team... so, I assume they believe in the move as more than an exit strategy.
- Michael Leggett
Coolest web 2.0 site I've ever seen & used. I hope things don't derail. Ads will be coming soon, which is fine, but.... then what 's next? Please no quizzes!
- Ben Hanten
Who would have thought that after Facebook were shamelessly being "inspired" by FriendFeed, the inevitable would have happened?
- Tyson Key
Hey guys, keep in mind that Facebook is blocked in workplaces across the nation. 250 million casual users commenting about last night's party does not intelligent conversation make.
- Hector
yes you have just failed at failing, no it is not a double negative.
- Bahriye
I really can't see how FB would buy FF only to shut it down. There are way too many innovations and features FF has that FB honestly needs. I'm looking forward.
- Harry Wolff
Oh, this does not make me happy. Not at all! I've stayed off of Facebook intentionally and FriendFeed is my favorite social network. This is like when the Red Sox traded Babe Ruth to the Yankees. :>(
- Larry Hawes
i have stopped using FB for the most part and liked FF alot more. now FF will go the way of FB. screwed again.
- Joe The Sausage
Berge Gazen beat your score in Mafia Wars
- Berge Gazen
Enjoy your fat paychecks, guys. You've sold us out.
- Akiva
Bravo Bret! Been following your successes ever since we had the opportunity to work together on the YellowPages.ca / Google Maps Canada deal. Congrats!
- Sebastien
I wished it was Google or even Yahoo!, instead...
- Tyson Key
i really hope ff stays as it is. fb is kinder carder while ff is a great tool.
- jkkmobile
Not sure what to make of this. It could eiter be a big win or a huge fail.
- dorn
It could have been Microsoft, which would have been worse for everyone. :(
- Tyson Key
Can I take this opportunity to say I HATE facebook?
- Alex Scrivener
seems the only ppl happy here are the ones in the biz or who stand to profit from the merger.
- Joe The Sausage
I guess we should get ready to get poked by our supposed friends and have various shit thrown at us? Plus 5,000 requests by apps that nearly all suck.
- Joey Gibson
Painful. And apparently I completely misunderstood what FF was trying to accomplish both technically and as an organization. I guess Facebook must have dangled a pretty big bag of money in front of them.
- Ken Sheppardson
FriendFeed is Dead! Long Live FriendFeed! :/
- Tyson Key
I will reserve judgement, i don't like or use FB but if FF maintains it's current goodness i don't care who cuts the checks.
- SteVe C
I hope this doesn't turn into an APP filled hunk of crap. I love FriendFeed, it was the untouched gem of microblogging. I don't want Mafia Wars invited in my FriendFeed!!! Congrats on the sale though.
- Jay 'Farmington'
@Philipp: until the new masters start flexing their muscles and bringing in their own people to enforce their own vision.
- Joe The Sausage
I read the blog post and one statement stands out to me "FriendFeed.com will continue to operate normally for the time being." The time being. This is not just bad, I think it may be #FAIL
- berchman
Facebook obviously liked FriendFeed a long time ago. Why would they have copied so many features (feed item comments and the "Like" action, to name a couple) otherwise? It was only logical for this to happen eventually. Doesn't mean I like it, but acquisition is part of the game. I have the same feeling I did when SocialThing! was acquired by AOL, though.
- dgw
"Relationship Status: It's complicated" comes to mind. ;)
- Tyson Key
Wow, I finally sign up, and read this. This could end up being a very bad thing for FF fans: "Your FriendFeed friend just signed up on this poll, would you like to too?"
- Brian Bommarito
Does this mean that we'll be seeing an influx of webcam spammers, a la Twitter? Along with abolishment of the rooms feature, crappification of the search feature, and more "privacy features" that really just put more nails in the openness coffin?
- Tyson Key
Some people will do whatever their friends request........
- Michael Muller
I really don't see why people would be anything but excited about this Facebook freindfeed deal. Great news as far as I am concerned. The Friend feed team is going to go over facebook and make it that much easier to connect, share... isn't that what the social web is about?
- Kevin Murray
I know a lot of people who use Facebook and enjoy it and that's fair enough. It's just not my cup of tea. The chaps from Friendfeed will get rich and the technology will get absorbed in Facebook but I can't see Friendfeed continuing in anything like it's present form.
- Paul Nash
Don't be so negative, something good might eventually come of this...
- Tarmo Aidantausta
Congrats! I know you all must be crazy excited right now.
- Michele Lorito-Chase
chance for FriendFeed to become more mainstream... congrats FriendFeed team!
- Jeroen De Miranda
Nothing could make me happier than if they integrated the good tools from FriendFeed into Facebook, which is where all my friends are. So a big "yay!" from me.
- Ian Betteridge
happy for you guys, but not for all of us
- Flavio
congratulations. this is going to be interesting.
- Dave Beckett
I think I preferred the non-mainstream version of FriendFeed...
- Tyson Key
I'm turning on my black shirt, my black trouser, my black socks, my black shoes. Although I probably must be happy for you.
- Ton Zijp
NASTY NASTY BAD BAD. But we'll see...
- Daniel Morgan
I don't know, Like it? or dislike it?
- Ömer Balamir
What happens to all the content that we've created and imported here, and the associated metadata? Will all that disappear into the ether?
- Tyson Key
If the FriendFeed guys can make FaceBook useful and responsive again, this seems like a pretty positive step!
- Robin Barooah
I have big loss of data concerns. See http://ff.im/6pHjo Is there any way to archive all my FriendFeed posts, likes, comments, and pictures (friendfeed-media.com) off-line? Can some Archive.org-like snapshots of FriendFeed be made (Once a month starting Sept 2009)? I'd like to see the cross-links between my posts & other people's posts, even in 2020. -
- Mitchell Tsai
Mitchell: the FriendFeed site is not shutting down. Your data will not go away any time in the near term future - we are committed to our users.
- Bret Taylor
I just overheard a coworker mention FriendFeed. This is how the world ends...
- CannonGod
Then provide us with a way to easily make a back-up of all of our posts and all of the posts we have Liked and Commented on.
- Akiva
Same question as Mitchel Tsai. How do I export my data? I don't want it to be handed off to Facebook.
- zio bonino
I don't see good things coming from this. Although I like Facebook, I liked Friendfeed more. Partly because of the environment and the smallness of it. That is now going to be ruined. So, 10-1 odds that Friendfeed will be no more within a year after it gets intergrated into Facebook?
- Mathew™ aka Youngblood
I doubt it Robin. Bret can only give us assurances about the "near future." Here's what I think will happen. Just like Twitter acquired Rael Dornfest and his awesome web services, Stikkit and I Want Sandy vanished (and so did he), Facebook will acquire all the talent from Friendfeed, shut this service down and Facebook will continue to suck.
- Vicarbott
Same question as Mitchel Tsai. How do I export my data? I don't want anything to be handed off to Facebook. And I don't want to lose anything.
- zio bonino
Congrats obviously, but im not sure about the feeling,, different user groups which can not integrate but collide.. hope there wont be an huge integration in the future.
- Yunus Tunak
I'm happy for FriendFeed! But, at the same time a bit worried about the future. Hope you guys convince FB to not be evil too.
- Vishal Verma
I can't believe it! damn! facebook tos will apply to friendfeed too? should i start to move to another service? why anyone would think that facebook public is friendfeed public?! damn! friedfeed was my favorite! I can't understand this move! they want to kill friendfeed or what?
- paula simoes ☃
"I bet I can find 1.000.0000 people who dislike this deal."...Welcome to FriendBook.
- Jacque
Well, huge congraulations to you and your team, you deserve every success. To be honest I had presumed this would happen sooner or later - the only business model cool little startups have is to hope they get bought by someone bigger for their brains and technology. I'm going to be in San Francisco in a couple of weeks and was going to stop by your office to bring you a cake and thank you for a great product - maybe I still will if you're still there and there's still a FriendFeed!
- Alex Lomas
"Your data will not go away any time in the near term future - we are committed to our users" There's a bit of a contradiction in your statement, Bret. Nice try though.
- JCunwired
Grats Bret and the rest of FF. To all the naysayers... Lets see what happens before we start bitching....
- Rasmus Lauridsen
Just great. I'm certainly not very happy about this. Let's just hope FB doesn't ruin FF. Ugh.
- axolote

This ties in nicely with the fact that you soon will have the opportunity to make your Facebook profiles public and get followers there.
- Michael Netsch
I don't mean to be negative but there's got to be a win-win logic to each merger&acquisiton. Audience high in only quantity is clearly not a win for friendfeed in the long term by considering its unique selling points. Let's wait and see who will benefit from friendfeed's death now.
- ayca
Seriously, what is this? It's like Bret just announced that he's killed all your mothers or something. It could turn out good, it could turn out bad, but at the end of the day, who cares, it's just a website (I mean honestly, come on). I could see it going either way, but in the near term, this is a pretty big win for the FF team, so congrats guys.
- Chieze Okoye
To be honest, my heart sank a little but I am happy to congratulate you and the team for building such a good brand. Well done.
- Kevin J Hatton
Wow, I specifically use friendfeed b/c it is not facebook. Sounds great for the friendfeed team, but not necessarily for friendfeed users.

This is wisdom. Bracing for Google Wave is a good idea.............
- Kevin J Hatton
this is clearly a talent aquisition... why am i not excited about this? could it be because facebook has been blatantly stealing features from friendfeed shamelessly. Likes were clearly not an original facebook idea...realtime feeds is another i could go on...
- Tate
While I'm sad, because I suspect this means the best things about FF will disappear or I'll be forced to use FB in some way, if the buyout was for some awesome amount of money, I can't say I blame 'em for taking an offer -- I would.
- Andy Bakun
I came to FriendFeed because I don't like facebook. Now the question is, will facebook become more like friend feed? or will they just take friend feed and turn it into facebook?
- Tom Ray
FF could be a good R&D arm for facebook.
- Andy Bakun
Fucking morons. FriendFeed is doomed now. Think logically. Facebook has NO REASON to keep FriendFeed alive. It will simply take FF's best features, suck the life of out of it, then trash FF. Way to go, FirnedFeed, damn.
- Jeremy Buff
This announcement should have been held off until the plans for Friendfeed were known. Regardless, this is *bad* for FF users. Best case: it continues on, but with stagnated feature development. Worst case: it's gone.

Dang, and just as I was starting to get used to how FF works. FF is useful on it's own. I hope this only improves FF's system, rather than having it disappear into Facebook's wake.

My big question to everybody here is this: What are the potential downsides / upsides to this acquisition? I mean on paper I just don't see what the pros OR cons are. I don't care for Facebook but I don't see how them acquiring FF is going to change everything.

niczak has good points. FF & FB aren't exactly competitors, but they aren't orthogonal either. Let's hope FB's smart enough to see the difference and improve both platforms.

Nicholas: The upside for Facebook is they just bought an engineering team that's built many of the feature's Facebook's going to need to stay competitive. The upside for FriendFeed's engineering team is $$$ and the ability to build system for a wider audience. FriendFeed's user base is small enough that it'll either get absorbed into Facebook or move on, and FF will become a footnote on the Internet timeline.

As FB said they're interested in the people and not in the site, what if the community will keep running FF without its current staff?

I am purposely not on facebook because I don't really want to talk to people I have not talked to in 20 years.

trouble is (from my perspective), that the philosophies of the two platforms are at odds. FB wants to bring people to the site and keep them there, while FF is a hub, bringing people in and then sending them back out. (That's part of why it's hard for the newcomer to understand, IMHO.)

Thomas Power still believes that Facebook/FF/Linkedin (2010) will be acquired by Apple (2011) and this is a transitional acquisition in the SN market cycle. The world is shifting to Mac, iTunes, iPhones and FB own the next generation. Apple have $29bn of cash on deposit price is not an issue. Just finished setting up my lifestream.fm at http://lifestream.fm/dfaulkner. Lifestream does what it says, and no more. FF's search blows lifestream away. FF is more flexible about adding source feeds, but lifestream does fine without the flexibility I suppose. FF still wins, or would, if I thought it would be sticking around. :P
- Don Faulkner
I also hate facebook, not because of their silly quizzes and pokes, but because I suspect they would like to maintain massive user base as the determining factor in choosing a social network. I would love to switch to orkut as I use so many other google services, but I can't because nobody else does. That should not be my criteria.... I thought friendfeed would try to make social networks work together.

Nope, the frames are too untidy atm. :-( But I really want to embed it.
- Kol Tregaskes
I tried to use Post Based comments (automated via API, and embed) but it is MUCH too easy to fragment a conversation to make sense (for now). The following issues need to be fixed before it REALLY make sense to embed a post (as replacement for comments): allow editing of groups on an existing post and a cleaner share solution (where comments appear on the original/master post). I do use a manually embedded post for site comments and was thinking of using a group as a discussion area for each blog!!

@Mike: Thanks for the explanation. Doesn't sound reason enough for me to use it, but if you want to go ahead :)

LANjackal: I hear ya :) I don't really use it either. I have an account setup just to play with it but not sure I see it fitting into my workflow/life in anyway. But who knows....I do love the simplicity and strategy of making posting really simple. I think it will be great for the less techno savvy who understand email and all they have to do to make a blog post or photo gallery is send an email to post@posterous.com
- Mike Bracco
Just tried it out, and auto-posting to FriendFeed looks the same as if you import the RSS feed. Personally I would rather FF pull items in, instead of a service pushing to FF.
- Daniel Sims
Why is this better than using Ping.fm and Traffic Geyser/Tubemogul? hmmmm
- dhamza
@dhamza, I doubt anyone would just use Posterous only as a middle-man for posting content to others sites (like you would use ping.fm or pixelpipe). It is a nice feature for auto-sharing your posterous blog posts, without having to use another in-between service.
- Daniel Sims
I seriously don't get the point of tumblr, posterous, *duplicating* data. Just link to the original sites! And I doubly don't get the point of nested tumblr/posterous/etc shares.

One thing Posterous can do that FF can't (at the moment) is accept iPhone3G(s) videos via email.
- tollie williams
Daniel Sims, push is faster and more efficient than pull.
- Vezquex
@Tollie - exactly. They've told me they're working on pushing video to flickr (right now it only pushes photos to flickr)... but I've used it for pushing video to Facebook from the iPhone and it works great.
- Jen (SquirrelGirl)
Posterous is awesome. I have an account but my Blackberry 8330 has no cam :( but once I get the new iPhone expect greatness :)
- Garin Kilpatrick
Eventually, with every social media site pushing updates to every other, somebody is going to break the loop detection and we'll get an infinite number of duplicate posts about somebody's kitteh, causing the interwebz to collapse into a singularity and destroy civilization. Damn cat!
- DGentry
DGentry, agreed. It's going to take some planning now to make sure posts do not get posted in loops.

It does seem to be a bit easier to love posterous if you're looking to share iPhone 3GS video with it.

It's really the posting audio and video from the iPhone (and other mobiles) that I think is interesting. FF should add that feature quickly if they want to become the social MMS to the Twitter social SMS. Having private groups for these personal mobile captured images, audio, and videos is an important feature both FF and Posterous share. Posting to a public YouTube to get your video into FF is far from ideal.
- Chip Ramsey
iPhone video can be shared very easily to FriendFeed via email share@friendfeed.com or upload video to YouTube and be sure you've added your YouTube service to FF and wala you're all set. Posterous does have more sophisticated posting options *hint, hint FF team*

I was under the impression that you could not send videos from the iPhone 3GS to FF and have them display inline. I guess I will have to test the functionality when my 3GS arrives. I understand the YouTube route, but want to keep my family videos, etc. in a private group. I don't think most people want to be spammed by videos of my son doing the robot as he slides down his new slide or my daughter singing like a bizarro Mariah Carey. I could make a private Posterous, but would prefer to keep it in FF.
- Chip Ramsey
Personally I'd like to see both of them. :-P Molly

I like Posterous I really do but I've yet to find the problem it solves. My primary output comes via my blog, misc content via Tumblr, and Friendfeed for most everything else. Posterous doesn't really offer much that I need right now. If I didn't have a blog or tumlbr it would be a good fit I guess.

I really think it's sad we must get the government involved in changing a private corp, but if that is what it take then by all means get this stuff fixed!

Birthers: you're funny (like a clown) because most of you supported McCain, who was not born in the US (then again, he's not black.) You're funny (like a creepy preacher) because your logic is faith-based. You're funny (like a stroke) because politics in America needs passionate, illuminated participants - and you're stuck halfway.
