Are you stretching first and afterwards? Don't over-do it - you're not getting any younger and can't stand the sort of abuse you could absorb when you were a wee bairn. - bob corrigan
I'm gonna start routing all my email through Twitter. - Steve Lawson
I've been having loading issues with gmail recently--gets stuck on Sending or Saving even when stuff is sent/saved. But generally I have much love for the gmail - Abigail (Hedgehog Lib)
Mine just went down with the dreaded server error. - Chad Haefele via twhirl
Happy B'day - have a blast- dont drink and drive ! - Peter Dawson
Your continued survival brings us all great joy. Endeavor to persevere. - bob corrigan
Happy birthday, man! Don't get too wasted now... ;) - Bryan Villarin
Thanks again to all! Don't worry...only one beverage of choice was consumed; never drink more than that with the kiddies present. :-) Again, I appreciate the well wishes! G'night... - JA Castillo
If I was hustlin in the streets passing out my CD or performing, I would be working for tips. What makes the blogosphere any different? LOL - Rahsheen Porter
I think people would rather drop a dollar or two if they like my site or maybe buy my music. - Rahsheen Porter
Try TipJoy. Tips seem to come when you create something (a plugin etc) or when you can save someone time/money with your post. Google search, and text link Amazon products that are appropriate to the content you're writing also have worked a little for me. I make enough to cover my small hosting expenses. - David Knight
Good ideas, David. I have been looking into monetizing with Amazon, but all that type of stuff makes me zone out. Yeah, I'm lazy :) - Rahsheen Porter
I had a tip jar up for a bit and never got a cent. Ads are working much better. - Jason Kaneshiro
@Rahsheen - hate to break it to you bud but chances are it won't make one bit of difference. I've had a donation option in the sidebar for quite some time now and haven't had it used once - Steven Hodson
This has been debated and debated... but I think neither route makes sense. Unless you are a household name, running ads is more trouble than it's worth. Instead focus on content and delivering value. - Louis Gray
Louis, I think I asked you this before, but I wasn't around for the answer. Are you saying to wait until I become a household name, or to just forget about making any money entirely? (probably worded that all wrong, but you get the point :) ) - Rahsheen Porter
Rahsheen - i've decided to do weekly nude shows - saturday nights - $49/hour - Allen Stern
I don't agree with louis as far as they being more trouble than they're worth. I still write about whatever I want, and have spent nearly zero effort on ads after setting them up. It's nice to be able to cover hosting costs and then some. And I'm hardly a household name. - Jason Kaneshiro
Awesome! I wonder if live webcam pr0n is still profitable... - Rahsheen Porter
Allen, is that part of your Let's Talk Fitness program? - Hao Chen
People actually pay for pr0n online? Really? I can get more pr0n than I'd ever need, even from my iPhone.... requests for pointers met with derisive laughter. - Jason Carreira
Yeah, but can you get a live webcam nude show from somebody who is simultaneously giving you tips on Social Media and GTD? Eh? Eh? - Rahsheen Porter
How much revenue can you potentially create from ads?? And how realistic are profits, seriously. - Mona N.
I like Sushi, and I like Ice Cream, but not together... - Jason Carreira
"How much revenue can you potentially create from ads" ?? Maybe Markus F of plentyoffish, made buckets on adsense. His main revenue comes from there ! http://plentyoffish.wordpress.... - Peter Dawson
Go for the tip jar. But offer something of value in return - and be clever. - bob corrigan
In an entirely unrelated thought, would you rather see Horatio Caine of CSI:Miami fame sipping a Starbucks Super-Hyper-Frappo-Chai-Latte-Chino in the middle of an investigation. . .or have a Starbucks ad appear between segments? It goes to why I think ads don't work on blogs, they spoil the "wa" of the experience. - bob corrigan
Get it where you can. whatever works. Just don't make up a disease and ask for money, cuz that's actually illegal. Not to mention you'll go to hell. - Josh Haley
@Josh Can i have some money please.....just a little bit, rofl Off to HELL with my sorry ass - Gordon Swaby
Josh: ROFLMAO!!! That's hilarious. Certainly not going that route. @bob I have a couple of ideas, we'll see how they turn out. - Rahsheen Porter
become an internet porn start- everybodys a dog on the internet !! - Peter Dawson
Try being a "Troll" Half the people like you the other half are scared of you! LMAO - Igor The Troll
A Digg is a simple act that one can do to show support. Especially around social causes that we feel we can't change as an individual we can use sites like Digg, like FF, etc. to form the collective voice. As many have argued, this group mobilization has it's negatives as well, but being able to rally and alert others is a powerful tool in any ground-up situation. - Morgan
i don't care for digg at all. it's quantity over quality, but it's probably somewhat important as it's the voice of the masses no matter how base, crude and replete with teenage frustration it may be/posses - Cee Bee
Digg is important, but not the most important thing around. The whole SFMOMA on Digg thing may not get a result directly but it does: -1) inform a wide amount of people to the policy and potential trouble if going to SFMOMA 2) Possibly effect numbers via bad publicity (one less visitor is one to many) 3) Might grab the attention of a major news organisation 4) Get people intrested in their freedoms and rights. Digg (when used like this) is the equivalent of writing a 'letter to the editor'. - John Worthington
Mona, I did not read you post , only the headlines. To me its simple, as a story gets pushed to the top by a vast majority of users. This by itself tells me interesting stuff is happening. Wither its gamed or not, is a secondly question. TO me its like bubbles raising up form champagne.. its the bubbles that burst on top that make champagne a great drink, else its flat and disgusting. The same with the web, its humanly impossible to track and monitor all content, therefore its important to keep ones eyes . - Peter Dawson
I am still an RSS luddite - I can riding the river of news from the folks that I have come to trust and respect. And I simply add new RSS feeds as interesting things are recommended or I stumble across them. - Douglas Sorocco
<cont> on such sites, I use all these site in my pvt room to cull together the stories that raise to the top. Thats why its important to me. I am feeding off the others efforts. Technically I have about 3/4 million users/workers that do my crawling of the web and their actions will bring to me interesting stories :)- in short, I have engineered for myself the "creme da la creme" content to myself. BTW, its all free too :)- - Peter Dawson
Digg gets eyeballs looking at something. Will the people attached to those eyes do anything about what they saw, who knows. Personally, I will Digg stuff if people request it and the content is good or something I think should get traffic. I never actually read what's on Digg, though. - Rahsheen Porter
Oh btw ,in the same manner I also monitor the health of the internet .. I just cull all Status feeds of the cloud services etc and I know precisely where and when failures are occurring .. so its not just Digg that is important. Its a portion of what I find important :)- - Peter Dawson
good article Mona. Many major news outlets look to Digg for hot topics, so I would say yes, it's definitely a factor in getting the story out there. - Tim Hoeck
Tim, I appreciate that you took the time to read the post. Thank you for the feedback :) - Mona N.
Sort of important for traffic volume and *maybe* traffic quality, but the comments shit me. Just like they do on Youtube. - Mo Kargas
just read the post and comment there - Peter Dawson
Thank you, Peter, for taking the time to read the post :) - Mona N.
I read the post, but I commented here cuz I was following the herd :( - Rahsheen Porter
HAHA Thank you, Rahsheen for taking the time to read, as well ;) - Mona N.
Any real value Digg may have is lost under the weight of it's bias. The signal / noise ratio of that site is staggeringly bad. So yes, it will hit a lot of eyeballs and yes lots of folks will digg it - but they are not (mostly) the type of eyeballs that really matter. - Soulhuntre
" but they are not (mostly) the type of eyeballs that really matter." - but it does matter, because each time they hit your site, its a different IP address these users come from . Thefore, your google juice increase and thats part of the ranking systems of google. The more visitors from different IP's makes your site URL more popular in google's index and of course the SERP. - Peter Dawson
So what do you think the purpose of Digg is? - Mona N.
Digg's purpose: time wasting entertainment. - Jason Kaneshiro
I quit using Digg years ago. *Noise* It was mostly due to the nature of the commenters - andy brudtkuhl
Hmm, so in Thomas Hawk's case, do you think Digg did more harm than good? Is this only the beginning? Would his story have been heard, if it weren't for Digg??? - Mona N.
Mona, I can only say what I think it "was". A site that was geared for users to share and vote on content. Along come the SEO / SEM and then all hell broke lose .. let the games begin :)- - Peter Dawson
Along the lines of Peter's comments - Once the SEO/SEM market saw Digg as a signicant traffic generator the site went to shit. - andy brudtkuhl
Peter, I disagree with "games", this is not a game but more so a matter of principle... at least for me. Is/was Digging his story a game? If so, then shame on you. (not just you, Peter, but to everyone this applies to) - Mona N.
Oh no you misunderstood me.. what I am trying to imply is that the SEO/SEM began 'gaming' digg in various ways !!! - Peter Dawson
Thank you for clarifying, Peter :) I'm not really up to speed with search engine junk, I don't even know what SEM means, and frankly I don't care. But what I DO care about, is simply. With every 100 people that don't care, there will always be 1 who does. Does that not apply to the Digg audience? - Mona N.
Digg is a marvelous way to waste time. - bob corrigan
I stopped digging digg a long time ago. I have my run ins w/that forum a long long time ago. However, without particpanting there, I still use it to fidn out what hits front page. Mona, digg is a platform that can be used by any1, its meant to create awareness on content. A times the digg crowd can go amok.. and get into the Mob frenzy ..especially when it become institutlized vs Blogger /techie.. its the culture of the nerds vs the establishment ..thats all..dont take it too seriously.. you wont be able to keep your sanity levels for long !! - Peter Dawson
Well my thing was, in this particular case, to reach as many people as possible. The only way I knew how is/was Digg. I had no idea there is negative connotation correlated TO Digg.... jeez - Mona N.
joe breen, i am with you, but it is a very minority position, unfortunately - gregory lent
This type of stuff happens every day to famous and non-famous alike - I'm not sold your photo is all that unique as the articles seemed to play up. The real story is how the mainstream media ignored the story -- and how National Enquirer is suddenly more right than sensationalist. - Wayne Schulz
The minority is growing, put me on the list. +1 Joe, private life should be just that. - Aaron Krug
thats the problem with American's and their view points. You are wiling to let a polictical candidate say one thing and yet do another thing and you all want to still elect the person ?? Hide behind the banner of "pvt life" and lets keep eyes wide closed. So then STFU about oil, food prices, housing crisis, health etc and keep your eyes closed - Peter Dawson
@Peter, it is his pvt. life. We cannot snoop into the bedrooms of people and worry about it. What enraged most people in this case is his use of his wife in the campaign even after his "affair". In fact, if not for Elizabeth, Edwards wouldn't have enjoyed the support he had. In fact, I don't care if he had sex with another woman or not. It is between him and his wife and NO ONE else has any right to poke their nose into it. (contd) - Krishnan Hussein Subraman
What is wrong and what enraged me was his use of Elizabeth in the campaign while he was screwing another woman. If he had used her in the campaign, I wouldn't have bothered about his sex life at all. He had misused/abused the trust we kept on him due to Elizabeth. - Krishnan Hussein Subraman
"He had misused/abused the trust we kept on him due to Elizabeth" .....ahhhhh-- at least some1 has a spine around here and be an advocate of truth, in some form ! - Peter Dawson
Krish: it isn't any of our business, true, but he was trying to be President at the time. Me? Only Valleywag cares what I do in my bedroom. Here, though, the stakes are bigger, especially since his wife is someone a lot of people liked and who has cancer. - Robert Scoble
There's something Gary Hartesque about this. His opening up his life to bloggers while knowing he was living a lie. It's almost like he was wanting to get caught. Hey, I'm not a psychiatrist, but I play one on the blogosphere. - Rex Hammock
Rex: yeah, there's something about that too that's sort of interesting. Here he gave me HUGE access. Behind the scenes, or so I thought. Not behind the scenes enough, obviously. :-) - Robert Scoble
@rex, ... FF is your big 'psychiatrist' couch ?? LOL - Peter Dawson
Add me to the minority too. I don't care less what you do in your private life. If you transgress the law, let the law deal with you, otherwise you should be left alone to choose your own path. - Ian May
I feel sorry for his wife, firstly that she has cancer, and secondly that he did what he did, but I'd still maintain it's his (and her) business, and not ours to pass any kind of judgement on. He isn't the first, and won't be the last, spouse to be unfaithful to a sick partner. - Ian May
I don't care about this story. But, the vow a man gives to his wife is a serious, solemn vow, which usually pretty explicitly contains the phrase "forsaking all others". How can you believe that an man who not only breaks this vow, but makes a long term lifestyle of breaking this vow, can keep any other vow. Say, a vow to uphold the Constitution of the Unites States of America, for example. I think it undermines his credibility. In a Red or Blue state. - Brian Norwood
"It reminds me that as a blogger/journalist I have to always capture images, not knowing what the real story actually will turn out being. And always keep looking beyond what I was being presented." That is definitely true. Readers should do the same re: stories. - Wade Dorrell
Can you imagine if he had captured the nomination? We'd be looking at an open convention and utter chaos for the party. And what of the folks who dedicated their time and money to a guy who *knew* that he had a ticking time-bomb in his background, waiting for someone to uncover it. - bob corrigan
It's also a big news story because it pretty much seals his fate of another vice presidential run. - Brian Ries
Another scoop from the National Enquirer... - Bill Sodeman
"Facebook is worth a lot of money. Its not how much they make that drives value. Its how much they can make" - Fred Wilson
That's awesome - valuation on potential, not reality. - bob corrigan
bob - finance theory teaches you that an asset is worth the present value of its future cash flows. so what i am saying is that even if facebook is not yet cash flowing, it's value is equal to the present value of the cash flows it will generate over time - Fred Wilson
hence, the shell game .. the future potential in my mind of knowing which walnut shell the pea is under, vs. the knowledge of the guy holding the shell ... success in this "secondary market" of perception and potential is partly about having information that someone else doesn't have ... i wonder how the hyper-connectivity of the net where everybody can know everything will affect the markets, and business in general in the near future - gregory lent
It's still awesome, as in "worthy of awe". And another reason why they call it "finance theory", not "finance fact". - bob corrigan
I walk up and down LaSalle street and down on Wacker all the time - you'd enjoy the tour. Chicago is a great town. - bob corrigan
that's so cool. did you see them filming anything? and yeah, i really want to make the trip to Chicago now. When we do, we'll have to get together! - Adam Bullied via twhirl
I used to walk by the actors trailers - never caught any filming, they were doing all night shots around that time. - bob corrigan
There's a really short pamphlet you can read on "strategery" that'll teach you everything you need to know to succeed as the leader of the free world. - bob corrigan
They should have bought them out or should have reached some other sort of understanding. Users liked that application, it is sad to see them go away. - Vic Podcaster
Last I heard, they attempted to buy them out, but the creators wanted an exorbitant amount each (2+MM each). - Johan Lieu
I bet the price has come down a bit since then. - bob corrigan
I've never played it, but if you treat it as a social network, $10 million is a ridiculously low price per user. Facebook itself is worth $15 Billion. - Roberto Bonini
