"Today is Thanksgiving in the U.S. Traditionally we take stock of the things that we’re thankful for on this day each year. And I realized that one of those things is Steve Jobs. I’m thankful that he returned to Apple in 1997 and did the things he has done since. It wasn’t at all a certainty that he would ever return to the company that he cofounded two decades earlier. In fact, it was only luck and coincidence that pushed him back there." - See-ming Lee 李思明 SML from Bookmarklet
manielse (Mark Nielsen)
Is there a tool that can show me how many inactive people I am following on Friendfeed? What I define as inactive is: someone who hasn't directly posted a message, made a comment on someone else's activity or "liked" anything in the last 30 days. Posts from outside service feeds doesn't count.
None that I know of, other than manually, but that'd be useful to know. - Stephen Mack
not that i know of either, and i've been lookin, :( - chaz2b
Darn. I like some of the SocialToo features but, in some ways, it has made a bit of mess for clean up. "Twitter Karma" helps solve my need in Twitter... - manielse (Mark Nielsen)
I wonder if this is something that micahwittman can do... - metalerik
manielse, I'm working on some solutions around that, and as soon as FriendFeed integrates Facebook more I'll definitely start working on more features around FriendFeed - Jesse Stay
Sounds great, Jesse - Eric Logan
If you had this information what would you use it for? - Brian Sullivan
I miss that feature. It was so much easier being able to hover over people's names and seeing the last time they made a comment or posted directly to FF. - Admiral Anika
...sounds like a FF app just waiting to be written ...too bad directeur isn't making anymore FF apps - .LAG liked that
Brian S., I don't know about Mark, but for me, I'd use to organize my lists better. Some of the people I follow here on FF I don't know, and followed because they followed me. But if they've moved on to a different service and aren't using FF any more, I'll shunt them off into a list I don't check as often. I can do it manually but that's time-consuming. - Stephen Mack
+1 mr mack - chaz2b
If they have moved to a different service - wouldn't that mean you don't see them here? -- or if their posts are bothering you here isn't easy to hide or unsubscribe at the time that happens? I guess I just don't see how using this information proactively would help. - Brian Sullivan
Brian, my use would be similar to Stephen. It's mostly about housecleaning. I like to follow people where there is the greatest chance of interaction. If all they do is Twitter, why fill my FF stream with that person? I may makes a comment or like but that person may never see the engagement. However, if I @reply or RT in Twitter, the message was seen. It allows me to use the tool of choice for that person without zombie artifacts in the wrong one. - manielse (Mark Nielsen)

John (a.k.a. dendroica)
"Conservatives thrived for years as victims. Victims of a welfare state, victims of the poor, victims of abortion, victims of drug-addled criminals ransacking their neighborhoods. When they finally, totally lost in 2008, and to a black man no less, something appears to have finally snapped in the collective conservative id. They’ve fallen back into the victim mythology so forcefully it’s jarred something loose; it’s like someone who just needs a hug finding a binkie and sucking his thumb in the corner until someone sees him and pays attention. Before, there was an air of confidence and, yes, hope that kept the true insanity at bay (or at least churning in the ever-productive conservative bestseller industry) but this may just be too much. The only real questions that remain are one, how long will “mainstream” conservatives defend these as mere exercises of free speech and two, how long will it be until this new round of uber-ranting winds up with yet another person dead from right-wing violence?" - John (a.k.a. dendroica) from Bookmarklet
On Palin's "death panel" comments ... "Such a system also does not exist. And has not been proposed. But it’s emblematic of this perfect storm of crazy: conservatives have spent so long trying to keep so many groups angry about so many things that the supports have started to fall and it’s all come down together like an amateur’s splatter-paint canvas. Government bureaucrats are labor... more... - John (a.k.a. dendroica)
How fast the health care debate has escalated into threats of violence really concerns me. - John (a.k.a. dendroica)
Just imagine the amount of shame Americans will have to suffer if one of these extreme right wingers kills the president. And for what? For totally misunderstanding what Obama is trying to, by listening to "news"casters that only incite hate. Things get more and more volatile by the day. - Rene Wirtz
I think Obama is probably safe. There are definitely a lot of threats (30 a day!), but he's also well-protected by very effective bodyguards. I'm more worried about the rest of us. - John (a.k.a. dendroica)
Political assassinations and assassination attempts are quite common. Think: Abraham Lincoln, James Garfield, William McKinley, John F. Kennedy, Ronald Reagan, Yitzhak Rabin, Benazir Bhutto, etc. In the present climate we are witnessing strident and relentless efforts to stir up political violence from leading mainstream media outlets, like Rupert Murdoch's Fox News -- Murdoch minions... more... - Sean McBride
I know the potential for assassination is serious and that Obama is probably at higher risk than most recent presidents. The current atmosphere is very scary. - John (a.k.a. dendroica)
Hasn't anyone in this thread noticed that the violence is coming from the left-wing union thugs that Obama and his team mobilized? - David C. Cooper
Thanks David for making that point. union thugs from SEIU are the ones beating up protesters. Can liberals possibly believe that conservatives lost their right to protest socialist policies because they lost an election last November? - Daltonsbriefs
The ability of everybody involved to make gross generalizations and envision conspiracies and central coordination never ceases to amaze me. - Ken Sheppardson
None of the unions have advised their members to bring firearms to the meetings or threatened their opponents with violence just for showing up. And SEIU members aren't thugs. They're ordinary employees. Protesting policies that one disagrees with is an essential American right; threats and intimidation are not a right. - John (a.k.a. dendroica)
SEIU members aren't thugs? What do you call this http://www.youtube.com/watch...? - David C. Cooper
@David: OK, so SEIU members are thugs (I speak hypothetically, though). At least they are not telling people to go to teabag parties or town hall rallies and bring their gun(s)! - Rene Wirtz
David: using your logic, then, Glenn Beck and Bill O'Reilly are directly responsible for the death of Dr. Tiller. Hey, if one conservative nutjob is a killer, then the rest of them are killers, too, right? - Steven Perez
Steven: What logic? - Ken Sheppardson
Exactly. - Steven Perez
As a matter of fact, the SEIU has asked for cooler heads at these town hall meetings: http://friendfeed.com/us-poli... - Steven Perez
Wow, based on the responses that video must've touched a nerve with the Obama brown shirts. >.> I'll have to post that link more often. http://www.youtube.com/watch... (X^P - David C. Cooper
shhhhh ... watching the entire video ... - Steven Perez
As opposed to the first five seconds you're fixated on. - Steven Perez
It's hard to tell what's going on in that video because the fight is pretty much over by the time the video starts. And the people in the SEIU shirts are limping around. - John (a.k.a. dendroica)
Yeah, nice video, David. And it ends with the arrest of at least one SEIU member. That just screams conspiracy to me. - Steven Perez from IM
And in any case, the SEIU is still not encouraging people to carry guns to these meetings. The combination of weapons plus heated discussions is a real recipe for trouble. - John (a.k.a. dendroica)
Perhaps you could explain what it is you think you see in that video, David. I must be missing something. I watched the whole thing twice, and what I see starts with somebody on the ground and continues with a bunch of guys arguing about who did what to whom. - Ken Sheppardson
Your "logic" is specious, at best, David. If some pushing and shoving in the parking lot somehow equals "left-wing jackbooted thugs fomenting violence", then that brush can be used on every single anti-abortion conservative because one whacko with a voice in his head thinks God told him to kill an abortion doctor to save unborn babies. - Steven Perez from IM
And you've also missed the point, David. Blaming the union members for being there to support the town halls is like blaming the Patriot Guard Riders who shield military funerals from those whack-a-doos from Westboro Baptist Church - those folks wouldn't be there if not for a handful of loudmouths who think God is on their side. - Steven Perez from IM
The note on the video says "six people were arrested. Two of those were arrested on suspicion of assault, one of resisting arrest and three on suspicion of committing peace disturbances." Anybody know which of the folks in the video were arrested? - Ken Sheppardson
The historical "brown shirts" were anti-union, anti-socialist provocateurs. Hitler had them march into union strongholds and pick fights with everyone they ran into. He then used that excuse to avenge the "martyrs." I am always amazed at the right wing's total lack of historic context for their name-calling delusions. The first name Mussolini chose for his party was the "Corporatist Party," but his fellow gangsters wanted something more romantic, so they chose the Roman "fasci" a symbol of unity. - Phil Boiarski
Phil – Thanks for the historical perspective. It's good to have a reminder of what brownshirts (and blackshirts) actually stood for. - John (a.k.a. dendroica)
Ken, here's a link to a local newspaper report ( Stl Today ) that gives more info http://www.stltoday.com/stltoda... - Wallace
The update to the story linked above (http://www.stltoday.com/stltoda...) has a bit more information as to what led to people being arrested (point of order: most of the scuffles that happen at major sporting events happen in the parking lot after the game, and this seems to apply to town hall meetings, too), such as photographing officers and some kicking and pushing, but no details as to what group did what to whom. - Steven Perez
Speaking of suppressing freedom of speech, the arrest of the newspaper reporter was kind of weird. - John (a.k.a. dendroica)
It's not just the brown president thing, they were nuts under Clinton as well though I guess its a matter of degree. Yes someone is likely to get killed and it won't be a one of Fox's teaparty conservatives. - John Hardy

"Imagine walking into a Zen-filled garden with three large bodies of water and a stone path to guide along the six and a half acres of land. How Amazon's remote deletion of e-books from the Kindle paves the way for book-banning's digital future. - By Farhad Manjoo - Slate Magazine
"Amazon deleted books that were already available in print, but in our paperless future—when all books exist as files on servers—courts would have the power to make works vanish completely. Zittrain writes: "Imagine a world in which all copies of once-censored books like Candide, The Call of the Wild, and Ulysses had been permanently destroyed at the time of the censoring and could not be studied or enjoyed after subsequent decision-makers lifted the ban." This may sound like an exaggeration; after all, we'll surely always have file-sharing networks and other online repositories for works that have been decreed illegal. But it seems like small comfort to rely on BitTorrent to save banned art. The anonymous underground movements that have long sustained banned works will be a lot harder to keep up in the world of the Kindle and the iPhone." - Steven Perez from Bookmarklet

The Birthers: Who Are They and What Do They Want? - Birthers - Gawker
"Liz Cheney and Lou Dobbs have recently defended the "birthers," the dumb group of internet psychos who think it's impossible that a black man could've been democratically elected president. Where did they come from and what do they actually believe? Barack Obama was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, on August 4, 1961. Here is is birth certificate. Hawaii was and is an American state. When Barack Obama was elected, he was 47 years old and had lived in the US since 1971. According to the Constitution, the president must be a natural-born citizen 35 years old or order who has lived in the US for 14 years. Barack Obama is eligible to be the president. It's that simple. Unless you're in America's fastest-growing group of nuts with modems, the Birthers! Then it is much more complicated, and stupid." - Steven Perez from Bookmarklet
"Quite simply, the crazier and more radical the right wing fringe gets, the more dangerous they get. "Mainstream" voices legitimatizing their radical beliefs just intensifies the nut's feeling that something needs to be done, because the country is in a crisis. Encouraging people to believe the president is illegitimate encourages them to believe that he needs to be removed by any means... more... - Steven Perez
Great quote, Steven. Indisputable. Now, replace "right" with "left" "GOP" with "Dem," etc.. and it isstill a true statement, isn't it? - MVB (Curmudgeon of FF) from iPod
In an alternate universe, yes. - Steven Perez
And the reason why, Mark? It's the Democratic Party. They're the bunch that bent over for George W. Bush for eight bloody years, even after popular opinion turned their way. You couldn't get a dozen of them to fart in the same direction without taking a poll. The GOP, otoh, actively went after fringe groups like the Birthers, thinking only of the votes. - Steven Perez
The whole Birther's thing drivers me up equivocally insane. - Mike Nayyar
So, if I understand you correctly, Steven, there are no nutjob leftwing radicals? - MVB (Curmudgeon of FF) from iPod
The worst thing about the Birthers is that their argument is so infantile. "C'mon, prove you're American. Do what we want. What are you, chicken?" I haven't heard that kind of finely crafted logic since elementary school recess. - Steven Perez
they are racists too cowardly to admit their racism - William Harryman
Mark: oh, I'm sure some can be located. The Southern Law Poverty Center does list a few in the States. (http://www.splcenter.org/intel...) But last I checked, the perpetrators of the last two major domestic terrorists incidents in the US (OK City in '95 and the related Anthrax scares in 2001) weren't exactly reading Noah Chomsky. And I haven't even included all the religious yo-yos who like to blow up abortion clinics and shoot doctors. - Steven Perez
Which is my only point, Steven. There are ballistic nutballs on both sides of the political spectrum. As to the topic of "The One's" location of birth give me a frakkin break... These people are giving crazy a bad name. - MVB (Curmudgeon of FF) from iPod
Yeah, but when's the last time you saw the Democratic Party chasing the votes of some left-wing militia? Hell, half the time, they don't even want to be associated with MoveOn.org - Steven Perez
Some birthers believe that Obama wasn't really born in Hawaii... and since his mom was too young at the time to give birth to a citizen if she was out of country, he's not really a citizen! Doesn't explain the birth certificate nor the contemporaneous birth announcement in the Hawaii newspaper, though. - Andrew C
"There are ballistic nutballs on both sides of the political spectrum." But only one side's nutballs has a TV news channel, an organized bunch of elected politicians with nutball beliefs, ... - Andrew C
I want them all to join the libertarian SeaSteading project. - Piaw Na
Generally left-wing nuts aren't armed to the teeth and don't get their own TV and radio shows. - John (a.k.a. dendroica)
Andrew, have you forgotten about NPR? - MVB (Curmudgeon of FF) from iPod
*hopes that Mark was making a funny* Yeah, all those ads for gun shows and strip clubs, and the crazy whackadoo conspiracy nuts - NPR really is an intellectual wasteland of hate. Between Car Talk, Wait Wait and Foreign Dispatch, I hear socialists all the time advocating violent overthrow of the duly elected government! And that Garrison Keillor is totally out of control, what with his constant haranguing of Laura Bush's arms. [/a little sarcasm] - Steven Perez
"Democrat" party, not "Democratic". Yes, I agree, these people are out of their minds. - Mattb4rd
NOPE. "Democratic". Rushisms have no place here. - Steven Perez from IM
Yes, Steven, for FSM sake it was a joke. Although they do tend a little left... - MVB (Curmudgeon of FF) from iPod
NPR isn't a partisan outlet, or even that much of a left-leaning one. - John (a.k.a. dendroica)
You know what progressive bloggers call NPR, Mark? Nice Polite Republicans. :D - Steven Perez from IM
Several years ago I listened to a heart-wrending broadcast interviewing a poor, welfare-receiving, mother of three on NPR as they all lamented that she would not be receiving her tax rebate. Not once did anyone mention that, since she paid no taxes she was not eligible for a rebate... Shall I continue? - MVB (Curmudgeon of FF) from iPod
What I find most repulsive is the double standard by the right wing fringe. Under Bush they were very intolerant to people who spoke ill of the president/presidency. Now Bush is replaced, all of a sudden hacking into the president/presidency is AOK. These people have no morals and no moral compass. - Rene Wirtz
Five years ago, NPR couldn't regurgitate Republican talking points fast enough for the GOP. It got so bad that Air America named their morning comedy show, "Morning Sedition", in honor of NPR. - Steven Perez from IM
How'd that work out for them Steven? :) - Mattb4rd
Talk about a delayed reaction. And you mean, after they shut down the show? Not too well. - Steven Perez
Yeah, I was being a bit facetious. Far be it from me, right? :) I would love to have a truly left-leaning program on the radio to listen to. The only talk radio personality I can stand for any length of time these days, probably because he doesn't seem to take himself too seriously, is Neal Boortz. - Mattb4rd

Alright I'm gonna say it, even though I know it's too ‘early.’ WTF is the huge deal with Michael Jackson? Was he an iconic talent? Absolutely. But some kind of demigod? Not even close. We really worship all the wrong things.
What is, in your view, the correct thing for other people to worship? - The Letter M
Anthony, I understand how you feel. That's how I felt the first weekend that all stations were on his life 24/7. But somehow I moved into a different dimension as I watch the live tribute today. There's a different meaning and teaching with all of this. MJ is just the vehicle for something deeper. :) - Myrna
Ooh. That came out snarkier than I meant it. Sorry, Anthony. - The Letter M
@marty: I dunno, how about truth, love, selflessness, beauty, evolvingness, innovation? i mean, nuthin' wrong with "play" (Lila) - and certainly nothing bad about its spawn, "creativeness" - not at all - shit it's probably the meaning of life (as far as I can tell so far, anyway) but this MJ stuff is another glaring symptom of a society that has totally lost its psychoemotional bearings. - Anthony Citrano from BuddyFeed
I've been reading your feed for a little bit now, and I think I'm starting to see how some your societal priorities shake out. I think the thing I want to inject into the conversation is that, while those things (particularly your stance on factory farms) are important, more important than people seem to realize, it's okay to be touched by those things that are less than the top... more... - The Letter M
Marty, but its not exactly about MJ that I'm referring to. It's what MJ is bringing out of us all over the globe. It's the love, compassion, non judgment qualities that we are here to learn. He is only a vehicle as are others. Like on 9/11 everyone worked together, shared, cared, loved, etc - Myrna
A guy doesn't have to be a demigod for his passing to be a sad event. - Andrew C
Myrna, certainly. I'm pretty sure that when a celebrity passes, the public mourning isn't really about the person, but their contribution. And if the mourning brings people together peacefully, for just a few minutes, I think we're better off. That said, while I was referring specifically (and probably poorly) to personal impact, I don't think there's any arguing that MJ didn't have an amazing global impact. (edit: didn't have, may need to be changed to "isn't having") - The Letter M
It's not about the person or event though. It's what the person and event does to us as humans. They're just the vehicles to get us to be better in someway. MJ gave us a big present beyond his talent. He got us to feel more for a moment in time, maybe it will help in our personal lives, for example, to feel more compassion with others. So in a way, you can say that MJ gave us a... more... - Myrna
@Marty and Andrew: I never questioned the sensibility of people being "sad" or "touched" or even to commemorate his talent and influence. I'm grousing about the disproportionate cultural response. @Myrna: yes, that was true with 9-11 for about fifteen minutes or so. - Anthony Citrano
Michael Jackson was more than a 'pop icon', for many, he was more of a symbolic figure and in some instances, a God like existence for he gave a lot of people hope. Worship is the wrong word choice, I think. - Mona Nomura
People feeling "touched" by MJ makes me lol, even though it obviously was a spiritual type of connection not physical. I think it was a bit much but at least he has received respect for the first time in years and will be remembered for his success, and not the may-have's. - Jimminy
I'm gonna back up Mona and Myrna on this one. It didn't matter if it was Michael Jackson or somebody else, it's what the person stood for that mattered, their impact on the world. Far as I know, we haven't seen this kind of coverage since Princess Diana. - mike fabio
"the disproportionate cultural response." If a lot of people are sad, they're going to be sad together. It's not disproportionate except by your standards of what should be important, and, well, that's kind of subjective. - Andrew C
judgmental ≠ subjective. :) - Mona Nomura
James, yes it was definitely not a reaction that is explainable with our 5 senses. I'm sure its getting people to think about their judgments, at least some, hopefully. - Myrna
mike, or the lesson they came to teach us :)) and yes Princess Di, I remember! - Myrna
Mona - I meant that anyone's idea of what should be important is subjective. But sure, I'd say that Anthony's being judgmental to say "people are caring too much about [x]". (and I'm sure I do this too, Anthony.) - Andrew C
I just don't understand how this is having our priorities wrong. I don't understand when people say this. Give me an example of a figure that has had such a positive influence on the entire planet. Even if you take away his music, his message is still powerful and resonated through a lot of people. This isn't about some musician or pop icon dying. - Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
I think it's entirely subjective and by all means I respect other people's feelings on the matter but I cannot help feeling that our emotions are somehow manipulated by the media. As in Princess Diana's case I feel a bit uneasy about how both of them were first haunted and made fun of for years and later celebrated by the very same people. I do agree with Myrna though that these... more... - M F
MF, I just posted this today, seems appropriate here. Allow others to be themselves in all your relationships. Focus on yourself and take responsibility for what’s happening with you. - Myrna
I think that Princess Di and Michael triggered something deeper in ourselves(as MF said) so pointing fingers outside at external is futile. - Myrna
I think MJ is resonating with some kind of God or Archetype. It's unconscious. Shapeshifter. Moonwalker. Androgyn, Black/White, Puer,, It's also a Mass Media distraction/ hype. IMO. - Marg Uerite
I don't really care one way or the other about MJ at this point, but I will say that I find the reaction more comprehensible than the Princess Di thing. - Roger Benningfield from BuddyFeed
He was very meaningful for a lot of people and was particularly instrumental in breaking down race barriers in the popular music industry during his career. I remember it clearly as it had an impact on the kind of work I was able to get in the industry (after Thriller). I don't think anyone considers him a demigod, but he is highly highly respected especially in the African American communities for opening those doors. - Cole Jolley
Let's be real: It's all about the crotch grabbing. - Richard Lawler
@Richard: consider me busted. - Anthony Citrano
I like MJ's music and I liked his videos and all that. I also think that he brought all of the negativity he experienced upon himself. Did he molest kids? I dunno. Was he an excellent entertainer and strong supporter of charities? Yes, I think so. He was a freak, without question. And I don't mean that in a bad way. The dude was trippy upon trippy. And you know what? That's cool with me. Just don't forget that he was just a man. A man that could afford to cover the costs of his memorial gathering.. okbye - Morgan Haley

Interesting NY Times coverage (showing NY Times being displayed) - http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2009... - this is something that it seems inconcievable for Arrington to pull off on his own - no doubt he needs powerful partners (or purchasers) -- could it be that the Times is involved? - Brian Sullivan
@ Brian Sullivan I think you may have something there, though it wouldn't be necessary. It is probably sufficent to get the NYT to do a story by just showing their webpage on the CrunchPad Demo. - Phil Boiarski
The only reason this doesn't flat out kick the kindles ass from here to the VFW at the edge of town is the lack of eInk. Because the eInk only needs power when it changes it's sick on battery life. Like years or something between charges. - Matthew DeVries
I think Tablet Computing is the future, but this device seems really crippled. - Internet's Tad
I don't disagree with that Tad, but isn't this just an eBook reader with some tablety potential? I don't think it's going for a tablet price point. - Matthew DeVries
It's not an eBook reader, though. It's just a web browser. You won't be buying books and reading them on this or even viewing your PDFs on it. - Internet's Tad
Yeah, you're right Tad. I was going off an old article I read where this was supposed to go after the Kindle, not the fabled apple tablet or the Android tablets that are in the pipe. - Matthew DeVries
I do think, though, that the upcoming tablet computers WILL be used as e-readers. But e-reading will just be a small bit of what they'll be used for. - Internet's Tad

What frightens me most about Palin isn't Palin. It's the incredibly short memory of the public at large. Even with everything she's said, done, hasn't done, will do...there will be people out there who hunger to hear the drivel she spews and forget the rest. - Karoli
Karoli - my fiancee and I had this same conversation today, and its more than just a bit frightening. That said, I'm optimistic that the US hasn't fallen so far from sanity that a majority would deem her an effective leader. Why are Kindles popular? It's like an oversized original Gameboy, complete with the yellow-green screen. Read: outdated and ugly. Baffling.
Best I can tell, it's the e-Ink.Holds screen with zero power, reading without consuming electrons as you would on a smartphone. - Matthew DeVries
The proponents all gush about havine their eBooks and their magazine/newspaper subscriptions automatically downloaded. Umm... my iPod Touch can carry eBooks and I can surf all the newspaper/magazine sites I want. - MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
I have an iPod touch, iPhone, Kindle, Sony Reader, etc. etc. The Kindle is fantastic at what it does, that's it. Uses very little energy, stores a hell of a lot of books, and really does have the appearance of paper, causing nowhere near as much eye strain as an electronic backlit screen. If you read, the Kindle is your answer. - Andru Edwards
MVB but there are people like me who ONLY want the books. I don't care about newspapers, magazines, or web surfing. I love my Kindle. It's a good size, very light, very portable, and very easy for me to use. It's large enough that I can hold it without my hand cramping up and it's got a screen I can actually read -- both were problems with trying to read ebooks on my phone. Smaller isn't always better. - Nine
Isn't it similar to the first and second versions of the iPod? The ability to have a ton of music/reading material in one portable package is a definite draw. Unfortunately the Kindle faces more challenges since I would wager fewer people care as much about reading these days than music. - ronin
And it can read to you. - Alex Scoble
The problem is: I carry an iPod, a phone, a wallet, smokes/lighter now. Where would I have room to put a Kindle without resorting to a man-purse? - MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
The original Gameboy *rocked*. - Eric P
It'd be nice if people cared more about reading than music. - Nation Hahn
Mark: you'd put it wherever you would have carried a book. - m9m, Crone of FriendFeed
MVB - I carry a phone, wallet, and keys, too. I just put the Kindle in my coat pocket. Or if I'm wearing cargo pants, in one of the lower pockets. More often than not, it's in my hand because I'm reading. - Nine
+10 Mona. I want to hit the like button to unlike the Kindle 10 times! It's insultingly ugly and I'm desperately waiting for flexible screens anyway. HP is working on it: http://tinyurl.com/9nurwn - Gaby K. Slezák
You can use friendfeed from the Kindle on the Internet for free. The screen is easy on the eyes, although I would certainly prefer color. Perosnally, I liked my old school GameBoy. What's not to love? - Garin Kilpatrick
Crap, are we playing boring thread necro again? I hate that game. - Matthew DeVries
Great question. But the Kindle is unique and must appeal to some micro-niche market. - Mike Reynolds
Amen Mona. - Shey, Jamaican of FF
If you're an avid reader, it's got its charms. Ebooks are cheaper through the Kindle store, the battery lasts a LONG time, the screen is comfortable to read and the form-factor is about right. The price tag for it is still too steep for my tastes, though. - Jason Huebel
Yeah I agree Mona, the technology is simply not mature enough yet. - Geoff Schultz
Wow, where did this come from? LOL. I tried reading a book on the Kindle 2, only got through the first few pages. I don't like how the pages flash(?) when they turn...once there is more advancement (and different screen colors) I might change my mind, since Kindles are convenient. Or simply, like Geoff said: tehy're not mature enough. :) - Mona Nomura

As A Happy iPhone User, I Have Zero Interest In A Palm Pre - http://www.webomatica.com/wordpre...
Thinking the same thing the other day - so many apps already out for iPhone that the Pre will have to catch up to. - Wayne Schulz
I'm happy with the iPhone, but I have some interest in the Pre. If it lives up to the hype, it will only force Apple to make their product better. - Jed
"or Steve Jobs’ salary divided by zero which is still zero." fail @ math - Angus Burton
Another happy iPhone owner and ex Sprint customer here. Couldn't agree more. - Marty McPadden from BuddyFeed
I'm interested in it, but feel the app ecosystem on the iPhone has created a powerful lockin based on software - something unprecedented in the mobilespace. Next up is hardware lockin with the APIs for exposing the dock connector and Bluetooth to accessories. It's more than just a phone. - Jamie
I feel the same way. Had they come to market around the same time iPhone did, maybe I would feel different. But let's face it, it's a 'hopeful' me-too rip-off product minus the payoff. - Dean Kakridas
Competition makes smart phones better,I'd love to see some real iPhone competitors. - Steve Chou
Louis with my smartphone I can play music through my Bluetooth stereo headphones, run my turn-by-turn navigation, receive a call and open a spreadsheet, all at the same time. - MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
As an unhappy Razr owner, I have a lot of interest in a Palm Pre. I would be equally happy with an iPhone if AT&T's service wasnt so poor in my area. - Ron Wening
I do. AT&T has been sucking ass in my area lately. The Palm Pre's processor, development using HTML/Javascript/CSS, and multitasking with cards intrigues me. My current 1st gen iPhone is broke. My contract ends in July. That said, it's hard to deny the App Store and the option of using future devices by swapping out the SIM card. Most likely, I'll grab the Pre on launch day, try it out... more... - Rodfather
happy iphone user and no interest in pre. - Kiran Patchigolla
I've been carrier free for three months --- waiting for the Pre and at the same time wondering out loud if I should jump the gun and get an iPhone. The wait is almost over, we'll soon have reviews of both the new iPhone and Pre. I'm hoping the Pre is the winner. - Mark Evans
I can't help but have interest in the Pre.. I'm a gadget lover - Bwana ☠
They better send me one to review or I'll go on a hunger strike - Bwana ☠
For 3 hours - Bwana ☠
I also have no interest in the Pre. I was with Sprint and they have horrible Customer Service. They even charged me $750 early term fee that I happily paid when switching to AT&T which has better coverage and far superior customer service. - Corey Harris
Not zero interest, any new phone would have to signifigantly better to be worth the hassle of changing. - Robert Hafer
As a happy S60 user, I have zero interest in iPhone or Pre. - dthree
Corey, I found AT&T's customer service to be horrible. That, plus the fact that I despise iTunes, made an Android-running handset with T-Mobile an easy decision. - Christopher A Carr
My 15-yr old daughter has a Palm Centro and loves it. It works for me, too, because she isn't at a point where she needs all the iPhone apps. However, by the time her next upgrade comes, the Pre may be an option she decides to take... - Karoli
WebOS's elegant app switching is certainly intriguing. - Christopher A Carr
Everyone has zero interest in the Pre - DarknessFalls
I am also not interested in the Palm Pre, for the Pre gives me that feeling that the App store for it will be severely lacking, like the Android Market. The iPhone is all that I need, but the plans are outrageous in Canada, 60 dollars a month just for 500MB of data. - Zachary TG
the CDMA Pre will probably have the best browser experience due to its great network speed, but you can't take it overseas so that's a big limitation - Brian Hendrickson
Zachary, the Android Market isn't all *that* lacking at this point... - Christopher A Carr
really? We're criticizing an app store for a device that hasn't even launched yet because it will be lacking? - Richard Lawler
As a happy Android User I have ZERO interest in any other type phone, im happy to see android keep evolving ;) - Kyle Weller
I'm happy to see people comment that use Android, Nokia and etc. instead of just Apple fan boys. As a Blackberry user (on Sprint) I'm looking forward to the news about the Pre. I won't switch to it because I don't have the patience anymore to be an early adopter. Competition will bring out the best in the smart phone market. I really enjoy my Blackberry and it would take some soul searching for me to use anything else. - Vaughn
I'm interested just because the AT&T Service is HORRIBLE in my area. (Chicago) My friend who works for AT&T says the Chicago tower network is at or near capacity. Dropped calls, lots of dead zones. I'm looking for a decent competitor so I can move away. I love the iPhone to death. But none of the features it has are as necessary to me as the ability to make a phone call. I can live... more... - Jeff Smith
No interest in a Palm Pre - Johnny
Very happy with my iphone, it would take a lot for me to change to anything else, Don't think the Pre has what it takes! At&t service has been good in my area, maybe due to the fact I live in SD, I don't know. I have only had 1 of my calls dropped and that was on a train ride through hilly terrain. - Brian

"The Republicans, apparently feeling that there are no other pressing matters of concern in the governance of our country, are pushing to designate 2010 as the Year of the Bible. I may surprise you a little bit. I endorse this resolution…with a few caveats. I say the Democrats should vote this bill up as long as there is a little quid pro quo: the Republicans reciprocate by going along with the next couple of Supreme Court nominations Obama makes. Fair enough, I think. Then, since 2010 is the Year of the Bible, we get to say that all subsequent years are Not the Year of the Bible, and be done with it." - William Harryman from Bookmarklet

Postcards about Michael & Alex: Literary Heroes of Today and, perhaps, Tomorrow
"Saturday, I took the boys to the Ohioana Book Festival to see two of their favorite authors, R. L. Stine, author of the Goosebumps books, and Jeff Smith, author of "Bone." To be in their presence at all was too good to pass up, let alone in such a small venue. Each kid asked many questions, and were able to chat with their literary heroes one on one. During R.L.'s session he joked about how he has only 6 plots, and as he continued it occurred to me there is a pattern to the books and comics that I push the boys to read. They seem to be one of two types: the first class of tales are the stories about the kids who are different and don't fit in. They start off wanting to be ordinary, but in their hero's journey they learn to embrace being extraordinary, like the X-Men or Harry Potter. This is something that we have worked with extensively with the boys on, that their quirks are strengths to be used. The other is are the tales about an ordinary kid that does amazing things when tested... more... - RAPatton from Bookmarklet

You are right, James! D'oh! He was really nice. We learned that Big Johnson Bone's name was an accident, he didn't even think about it when he named him. He based it on some pioneer with that last name Johnson. Ha! That went over the kids heads, but it was funny. - RAPatton

Ben Goldacre: Swine flu and hype – a media illness | Comment is free | The Guardian - http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2009/apr/29/swine-flu-hype
"First it was the emails, and the tweets. This is all nonsense about the aporkalypse, surely? Just like with Sars, and bird flu, and MMR, is this all hype? The answer is no, but more interesting is this: for so many people, their very first assumption on the story is that the media are lying. It is the story of the boy who cried wolf. We are poorly equipped to think around issues involving risk, and infectious diseases epidemiology is a tricky business: the error margins on the models are wide, and it's extremely hard to make clear predictions." - Helen Sventitsky from Bookmarklet

Why Confucius matters now - Times Online
"Yu Dan has struck publishing gold in her home country with a book that reinvents Confucius’s 2,500-year-old ideas for the 21st century. Now she is here to bring his ancient path of balanced self-cultivation to our materialistic shores. The Beijing professor is a picture of petite perfection on a London hotel sofa, wearing what we might call Westernised Chinese Smart: a blindingly white designer tunic, precisely tousled hair, short black skirt and patent-leather ankle-boots. Only a snag down the knee of her tights leavens her impenetrable neatness. This 41-year-old married mother is a fast-talking embodiment of modern China. Though raised on Confucian ideals by her beloved scholarly father, she is also a pioneer of Oriental media and marketing studies. Her book, Confucius from the Heart: Ancient Wisdom for Today’s World, which rebrands Confucius as a contemporary sage, has sold ten million copies in China over the past two years, propelling her to national prominence — and exposing her to barbed criticis" - RAPatton from Bookmarklet
