Cultural Question: In Oz we do not have an automatic tipping mindset. Is the reason I should tip is because the person serving me earns a small wage? I will tip for good service but I'm not of the mindset that I should be subsidising someone's wages cause their boss is a tight-ass.
Totally agree Johnny. I'm in the UK and I don't understand the idea of an automatic tip. The idea of going to a US bar terrifies me due to the bizarre tipping etiquette there. - Martin Bryant from iPhone
Yeah, I agree Johnny. I tip if the service has been excellent, but one of the things I hate the most is COMMUNAL tip jars. I want to know that my tip is going to the person that gave me the good service. When I was in the US, most of the time I was happy to tip, because I was given exceptional service nearly everywhere, but those that EXPECTED a tip really gave me the shits. - Penny
Went on a cruise last year and the first thing we did was cancel the automatic tipping ($10 per person per day) that would otherwise have been added. At the end of the cruise when filling in the satisfaction form I wrote a small essay on not having automatic tipping and, instead, why not simply raise the advertised price and pay the staff more instead of sneaking in what amounted to a hidden extra cost on what was an already expensive trip? - Mark H
Yes, we tip here because the servers aren't even entitled to earn the minimum wage - they are actually exempt by law. It's an archaic custom. I don't know if people who work as servers would change it if they could, though, since in theory it's possible to make more than minimum wage. Since most restaurants aren't notorious for making money, maybe it keeps prices down in some places? I wonder what the average server earns per hour in other countries compared to here? - Amy℠
It's a cultural norm to tip in the US. If you don't, you look like an asshole. - Rodfather
Amy, by server do you mean waitress? I can look up the award wage here. - Melly
Okay, here in Australia, the Federal Minimum Wage is $14.31/hr before tax. That is $12.94 US. - Melly
Fast food industry pays minimum wage. Food & Beverage Attendant award is $14.31 - $17.33 ($US15.68). - Melly
When I first started waiting tables I earned $2.15 an hour (US) minimum wage was 4.75 or 5. What really blew at one job was they would add 3% into what you paid out at the end of an evening to tip the bus boys and bartenders, so if you had tables skip out on the tip, you literally paid to wait on them. - Heather Solos
Yes, we say server here. I just looked it up and it's easier to quote: "An employer may credit a portion of a tipped employee's tips against the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour effective July 24, 2009. An employer must pay at least $2.13 per hour. However, if an employee's tips combined with the employer's wage of $2.13 per hour do not equal the hourly minimum wage, the employer... more... - Amy℠
That's ridiculous! I can't believe that is legal! - Melly
That is straight from the federal government. And that, my friend, is why we tip. - Amy℠
I don't tip just because they make less than min wage. I've made min wage at several jobs, which means they could at least get that on their own. Most servers I know choose that job in hopes of earning much more than someone who makes min wage, but if they don't give me the most awesome of dining experiences...no tip for you. Also, I'm black, so they don't expect a tip from me anyway...which sometimes bites them in the ass because they give me shitty service from jump. - Rahsheen
So you'd get nearly double that here just for working fast food; more in restaurants etc depending on experience and length of service. Plus some people do tip. - Melly
I've never heard of anyone here making more in a restaurant because of experience. I have a friend who's been a server her whole life and she makes $2.13 and hour - but because of her experience she works in a good restaurant where she makes lots in tips. - Amy℠
Rahsheen I've wanted to ask this for a long time, but I've never been able to articulate it properly. The hardest internal fight I had with myself while serving was trying to fight that stereotype in my own head and keep up my hope for a tip. I'm not asking you to speak for all black people because that isn't fair, I'm just wondering why that seemed to be a trend. - Heather Solos
Johnny, I'm in the US and I agree with what you posted in your OP. Tipping's not even consistent. There are plenty of low-paid jobs that *don't* get tipped. I think business owners should put the true cost of business in their prices. US folks would bitch as the price of restaurant food would go up, but you'd know going into it how much your meal is going to cost. - Spidra Webster
The Food & Beverage Attendant award has 6 levels. Plus a restaurant can of course choose to pay more than minimum wage/above award wages. - Melly
See, we don't have those levels here - it's completely discretionary. - Amy℠
I almost always tip. In fact, I don't think I've paid a tab in a restaurant without tipping in over 10 years. I generally leave 15% for average service and somewhere between 20 and 25% for good to great service. I do know servers that make a great deal of money, but I also know servers that work their butts off and barely make enough to pay their childcare. - COMPLICATED MR. NOODLE
My last three serving gigs we were able to report our earned tips at the close of each shift and it couldn't be lower than what was tipped on the credit card tabs. - Heather Solos
I'll tell you what really ticks me off about some restaurants, though. The other day, we were in a restaurant where they actually charge you an extra $3 for sharing your entree with someone else. That's complete crap. If I'm there with someone else, and neither of us are very hungry, why do we have to pay extra to share one meal? - COMPLICATED MR. NOODLE
Spidra - I disagree. Think about other service industry jobs where tipping is not the norm. Yes, you know what you're paying when you order, but you have no idea what kind of service you're going to get. Nine times out of 10, you get crappy service with an attitude of "I don't give a crap about you." At least with restaurants, you have a better chance of getting good service, because they're hoping for a good tip. - COMPLICATED MR. NOODLE
I get annoyed that an adult is not allowed to order from the children's meals, particularly when the children's meals are sizeable. My Mum is TINY, and she can NOT eat a full-size adult meal, but most children's meals have an age limit. - Melly
In Canada, you have to get minimum wage. and you're supposed to report tips (not everyone does - it's not strictly enforced, I don't think.) My husband is what I would call a good tipper. I on the other hand start them off at 0 tip. if they offer a good service, I will tip. if not. nothing. I would do the same if I was visiting the US. If you NEED to make more money because your base wage isn't enough - then earn it, don't expect it. - Nathalie
Melly - around here, we're usually able to order from the kids' menu. My wife does that quite a bit, actually. Only once do I remember being told that she wasn't allowed to, and that had something to do with the food on the kids' menu being the same portions you find on the regular menu, but they'd been priced specifically for kids. - COMPLICATED MR. NOODLE
Heather, all the black folks I know always tip well if we get good service. So much so that servers remember us. If you have experienced that the black-folks-don't-tip stereotype is true, I can only speculate that either statistics about income in the US along racial lines are true or that the stereotype has made sure black people rarely get good service. - Rahsheen
We have, however, experienced servers laughing at us when she orders from the kids' menu. - COMPLICATED MR. NOODLE
I also order off the kids menus. mostly because the portions are smaller. ticks me off when they won't let me then when I don't eat half of what's on my plate they ask "oh! was there something wrong with it?! did you not like it?!" to which I answer "no. I wanted to order off the kids menu because I don't eat a lot and you wouldn't let me" - Nathalie
About the tipping in bars in the US, what do other people think - so that poor Martin can have a drink when he's here? I usually give $1 if the drink is around $5, $2 if between $5-$10 - but I rarely go out and drink a whole lot. I guess if I were running a tab with others 15-20%? - Amy℠
Rahsheen, thanks for taking the question in its intended manner. It was never true across the board, so I never was completely disheartened and of course I had great regulars. However it was less surprising, if that makes sense and mostly from those in their early twenties. Like I said those experiences left me feeling very conflicted. - Heather Solos
If they automatically add a gratuity, I tend to not tip. (unless I'm with a large group) - Nathalie
On a tangent, I remember when I was like 13, I went with my mom to her high school reunion. While she was at the reunion, I went to the hotel restaurant to get some food. All of the servers looked at me and acted like I was a leper, arguing with each other about who "had" to wait on me. One guy came out of the kitchen and volunteered. He and I had some good conversations while I was... more... - COMPLICATED MR. NOODLE
Curtiss, I don't think it's fair for restaurant workers to be making crap wages because the gov't and their employer are acting as if they'll make it up in tips. They won't necessarily. Not everyone is polite about tipping. Furthermore, if you get bad service someplace, you have some remedies besides tipping/not tipping: You can talk to mgmt. You can give them a bad review on Yelp. You can refuse to spend your $ there again and tell them why. - Spidra Webster
Spidra - I'm sorry. I must have misunderstood what you were saying. I agree that the fact that they make less than minimum wage is completely unfair. I was just trying to say that eliminating the tips would probably result in less than stellar service in a lot of cases. - COMPLICATED MR. NOODLE
Curtiss, you see a lot of grouchy servers during prom season. - Heather Solos
I've also noticed (in restaurants and other unrelated service industries) that wealthier people tend to tip less than the working class. When I used to work for a septic hauling company, our drivers regularly received tips from the people who could barely afford to pay us (and, those people generally helped dig up the tanks, too). However, the wealthier customers with the huge houses... more... - COMPLICATED MR. NOODLE
Servers take less than minimum wage because their income factors in tips. 15% is the norm that is supposed to bring them up to a full wage. They can make a lot more (often unreported) if they are good at what they do. It's like salespeople who earn less in base pay because they get commissions. - m9m, Crone of FriendFeed
In California servers don't earn less than minimum wage, but they usually earn only minimum wage. Though, when I bartended at an Indian casino, I got $11/hr plus tips, and they were only required to pay the federal minimum, not CA minimum (which is way higher than federal, at the time it was $5.15 federal and $7.25 CA, but both are higher now). People who don't tip in the US are... more... - Shannon Jiménez
Also, teenagers are the worst! Parents should really talk to their kids about tipping. When I was a server at a steakhouse, a teenage boy on an anniversary date with his girlfriend tipped $5 on a $75 bill (they seemed quite happy btw-- it was sheer ignorance of tipping, not disappointment!). - Shannon Jiménez
I agree with Shannon - Rodfather
One of the things I taught my Adult Ed students was "Percents". Nobody could calculate a percentage and they admitted they were embarrassed because they didn't know how to tip fairly and perhaps they'd overtip. They were so relieved to learn how to get 10%. I told them to double it for 20 or get somewhere in the middle for 15%. And sales tax then was 5% so that was easy to find. Bad tippers are sometimes just bad at math. - m9m, Crone of FriendFeed
So...wait. I talk to management and possibly cost you your job or I just don't leave you a huge tip...Hrm...lemme see which one sucks more for you... - Rahsheen
My point was, if the service was actually so bad that you are considering not leaving a tip, then that person probably shouldn't work there. Otherwise, you should be tipping them. - Shannon Jiménez
I will tip (and I'm doing it) ONLY for normal service, without stupid mistakes, but for last few years those servers NEVER did it exactly as I (we) ordered. Specialy when you are with somebody and they bring bloody steak, which my friend ordered well done, everybody going upset. WHY to tip those idiot? And I HATE the tip to be included in the receipt. So, you pay, and after go to call to credit card issuers to stop all payments to this account? - Borislav Borissov
If you don't like the service, talk to management and don't go there again. Not leaving a tip makes you a cheap ass mofo. - Rodfather
Borislav-- if the steak is cooked wrong, that's the cook's fault, not the server's. If you tell the server and they replace it, then the service would be good, right? The server didn't cook your steak! - Shannon Jiménez
I love how the attitudes are so different regarding tipping. Great topic Johnny! - Nathalie
for giggles, I looked up the definition of gratuity. "a gift of money, over and above payment due for service" I personally wouldn't give a gift to someone who didn't deserve one. or "something given without claim or demand." WITHOUT CLAIM OR DEMAND thus if I HAVE to tip regardless of service, it's not a tip and should just be added to my bill. - Nathalie
So, Shannon, We will eat and he will wait another 30 minutes for new plate, or we will wait for his portion and EVERYbody will enjoy iced burgers, forget about tips. - Borislav Borissov
Do you guys tip at fast food restaurants? - Bryce Roney
No - you don't tip at fast food places where you pick up your food at a counter and bus your own table. You do tip the driver if the place delivers food to your house. - m9m, Crone of FriendFeed

How old is it? The DVD drive has probably given up the ghost. - Tristan Seligmann
It's 4 years old. The last time I played it was in March. - Anika
Definitely old enough for the drive to have died; I don't think there's much you can do if that's the case. On the other hand, it could be something else; http://support.microsoft.com/kb... might be helpful. - Tristan Seligmann
Thanks, Tristan. I was looking for a page like that. Sucks if it's dying after 4 years considering how little we use it. Our PS2 is about 7 years old and it's still going strong. - Anika
