Hah! You're both right. Just came from my physical -- clean bill of health other than a bit of cholesterol and vision starting to go. So I have a lot to be grateful for. But 50 is only four years off, how did this happen?

I have a sudden urge to get a sports car for some reason. Blondes seem attractive. What does this mean???
- Stephen Mack #TeamMomo

Yeah, I'm definitely more scared being this close to 50 but that has a lot more to do with where I personally am in my life than the age of 50 itself. I'm sure other people do really well with it. (I'm permanently about 22 in my head...except slightly wiser and more world weary. You can be permanently 35 in your head!)
- Spidra Webster
In all seriousness, there's a certain feeling of triumph that comes with getting a clean bill of health after a CPE. I had mine today too.
- Jim #TeamMonique
You youngun. Ya know - we have a grownups' table you can join here at 50. Remember, m9m? Also, I didn't even start learning proper HTML/CSS until I was 47, nearly six years ago.

LOL Mary, these are the true hours of aged wisdom, right?
- Janet:#TeamMonique
Does this mean I'm not old enough to be your friend Janet?
- Headless Gnad Kicker
Apparently. Also, the pills are in the kitchen. ;-) And I've been going to stand up and go there for an hour.
- Mary B: #TeamMonique
I worked a 13 hour shift and came home to become very angry with other half. Anger does not bode well for sleep. Going to see if I can grab two more hours before I am back at work. Hope you have good pills.
- Janet:#TeamMonique
I have GREAT pills. But I respect them, too. They're like big dogs - gotta keep a certain perspective.

I *feel* 32 today. But somehow that doesn't add up properly when I subtract my birth year from the calendar year. Odd, that.

Just think, someday there will be people who, when they watch Star Wars for the very first time and find out that Luke and Leia are brother and sister, their first thought will be "Aww, man, is this just a space operatic rip-off of Game of Thrones?"
A space operatic rip-off of Game of Thrones would be pretty epic, though. I guess instead of dragons, the Targaryens would have Death Stars?

Daytime television is redonkulous. All of the sudden there are a ton of panel shows: the view, the chew, the doctors, that other stupid panel show with Sharon Osbourne.
RT @swirlspice: Shade & Faith: On ESPN’s Burial Of The Jason Collins Story at @racialicious http://disq.us/8cyyxt Probably why Collins gave story to SI?
"A former NBA All-Star is accused of squatting in a home in Arizona and then trying to make money from it. Chris Gatling played for eight NBA teams during his 11-year NBA career. Stability wasn’t a reality for him while in the NBA. Apparently that is still the case as the former professional basketball player has been charged with various criminal offenses, which include theft, forgery and identity theft. According to a police report, Gatling moved into a Paradise Valley home without the owner’s permission by breaking into a key box. He lived in the home from July 2010 to August 2011. The power was on and it was furnished, but the owner of the home lives in California. Not content with just hanging out in someone’s home, Gatling then decided he wanted to rent out the house he was squatting in. So naturally he put an ad on Craigslist. The ad said: "800-dollars — 4 bedroom Ex-NBA — Paradise Valley Home for rent with pool and utilities included.""

And time marches on. One thing: Is it just me, or does the accompanying announcement "I'm black" kind of detract from his statement? He *is* in the NBA after all. And beyond that, it's just rather beside the point to me. For instance, at this point, for me to declare, "I'm a dad." really doesn't add much to the conversation.
- MoTO #TeamMonique
The way I look at it is, no one else has done it. Far more trivial "firsts!" have made the news, so why not?
- Victor Ganata
We "knew" that someone would unmask in pro sports. Who decided to be first is news. That someone felt they could do so is probably bigger news
- WarLord
Recently, I've seen support for marriage equality really take hold. Last month, 13 Chicago area black pastors publicly voiced their support. That is huge. Collins's announcement may not be as "big" as people think. The needle is moving.
- MoTO #TeamMonique
Well, I think the "active" part is a considerable distinction.
- Victor Ganata
The bigger news will be is he signed by any team. He's not on any teams right now so it's kind of a grey area, he's not an active player. If a team signs him that will be big I think as it will be post coming out. Meaning a team thought about it and any consequences and went with him. He's not a spring chicken so he might never play again without it having to do with the being public about preferences.
- SteVe C
Sure, the needle is moving, but I'm wary of saying "so what?" to this story. To me, doing so feels like how some people say "Well, now that we have a black president, now we can stop talking about race."
- Victor Ganata
Well, he played the 2012-2013 season but is now an unrestricted free agent, so, yeah, we'll see if he gets to keep playing, but I think this is fairly different from athletes who came out long after they retired from the sport.

"Every year, 4,600 Americans are killed in work place related accidents. Every 28 hours a black person is killed by police, corrections officers, security guards or vigilantes. Every year more than 30,000 people are killed by gun violence in this country. The odds of being killed by a terrorist are only 1 in 20 million. These statistics are rarely mentioned and never had a chance to be addressed after two bombs were exploded during the Boston marathon. Death under horrific but commonplace circumstances attracts scant media attention or political action. Acts labeled as terrorism, which are unlikely to kill anyone, bring an inordinate amount of hysteria among the populace and cynical attention from press and politicians. Just two days after the Boston marathon a fertilizer plant in West, Texas exploded, killing 14 people, most of them the much worshipped “first responders.” The risk of dying in an industrial accident is far greater than the odds of being killed by a terrorist, but no...

I'm not going to deny that doctors can often be uncaring, ill-tempered assholes who don't listen. I certainly have my bad days. But the idea that some programmer who will never see a single patient in their life can instruct a machine to have even more empathy than the average M.D./D.O./P.A./N.P. just strikes me as the acme of ludicrous insanity.
Two reasons why you are wrong. 1) People will have lower expectations of a machine. 2) A programmer can socially engineer a better empathetic experience. We've seen this through the AI challenges. It's not the hard to fool people.
- Todd Hoff
I don't think fooling people into thinking they're being treated by a real human being versus by an automated script is necessarily all that ethical, but what do I know.
- Victor Ganata
...but the programmer can download feedback of thousands (if not millions) of patients reactions to those doctors, and write a clever algorithm that will factor out the low-rated doctors... advantage programmers/data-scientists. +1 math. The doctors' records will haunt (or reward) them.

A machine that you think may care is better than a doctor who you are sure doesn't care.

So it's totally OK if I give you sugar pills instead of chemotherapy for your leukemia without telling you, because you seem perfectly fine now? The ends justify the means, I guess? Well, maybe you're right, maybe people won't care about such ethical conundrums.
- Victor Ganata
Not even what is being talked about Victor.
- Todd Hoff
But like I said, I don't doubt there are many physicians who don't listen. But I suspect the solution to that is to find a physician (or physician assistant or nurse practitioner) who does, not to substitute with a machine that only feigns to listen.

I don't know. Given the sorry state of all EMRs on the market right now, I have serious doubts that they can even parse the data available, much less act on it.
