About to do a portfolio site for a friend who's a sound designer - so mostly video clips from movies he's done. I'm working on the design research, but does anyone know any amazing video portfolio sites off-hand? Most of my existing bookmarks are graphic/web design portfolio sites, not heavy on video.
All the cool stuff I want to do for this site is going to require me to learn how to use jQuery, I think. At the very least, I want to use lightboxes, but I've seen the code for that and I think I can use it pretty easily. Sliding content areas, thumbnail video selection (like here: http://www.mojaveinteractive.com/), may not be as easy. Any jQuery programmers want to clue me in on how big a learning curve this is gonna be? (I know my way around html and css, and can modify php with decent results, but haven't done much with javascript/ajax/jquery.)

Can you write a program in any language (ActionScript included)? Or, if you can't, the PHP you modify, do you understand what's happening, step-by-step, in the code, or are you just searching for variables to modify? jQuery is pretty easy if you know procedural programming, it's just a matter of searching the documentation for the hooks you need to do what you want. Not sure how hard...

You can always look for pre-built jQuery plugins: almost always, they give you the recipe of how to implement it on regular HTML, with just a few variables you might need to modify. That might get you 80-100% of where you want to be. You won't be able to do anything complex, like chain jQuery methods together, but there are thousands of different plugins for almost anything you can think of.
- Mark Trapp
Thanks, Mark, that's mostly what I figured. I'm hoping to find what I want to do with already-written code that I can just modify. It's more of dropping in modules for media-handling (like the video section of the Mojave site I linked above). I've already seen pre-built html/css/jQuery code for tabbed navigation interfaces for image galleries and such. With the php, it's more learning...

I know I'm doing this kinda half-assed, but I don't know if I have time right now to start from scratch with javascript, which I'm guessing I'd have to do to learn it properly - not for a probably unpaid project. I learn better from doing stuff and looking up things as I go along, too. That's how I learned CSS. But the jump to programming from design/layout has kind of held me back - it doesn't come quite as easily to me.

The best bet is to try to search for jQuery examples and plugins that sound like they do what you want them to do, and try modifying parts that look like they may be what you want to change. Because file size is directly related to the time to download and render a page, a lot of jQuery is written in shorthand, so it might not be obvious where you need to change things or what the syntax is, but it doesn't hurt to at least try to modify a few examples to get a feel for it.

There's also a lot of documentation on the web: the keywords are probably jQuery for beginners, jQuery for non-programmers, etc. Regular jQuery tutorials usually assume some programming background. Theme Forest has a series of screencasts that might be helpful: http://blog.themeforest.net/screenc...
- Mark Trapp
Thanks, Micah, didn't know about those! And Mark, thanks for the screencast link. I bookmarked some jQuery for non-programmer type tutorials earlier today, and will keep my eye out for more.

"Israel is the only one of the 25 nations polled where support of the United States and of its president have waned, according to a recent worldwide public opinion survey. Israeli support of the US declined by seven percentage points in the past two years, and Israelis prefer former president George W. Bush's handling of global affairs to President Barack Obama's, according to a survey by the Pew Research Center's Global Attitudes Project, based in Washington DC. The survey was conducted from mid-May through mid-June. "

DISQUS WITH FRIENDFEED QUESTION: Those of you who have FriendFeed comments pulled into your blog article's Disqus stream... How long does it take for new comments made on FriendFeed to populate within your Disqus stream?
Anyone have any insight on this? I just embedded the code into my site, posted an article on FriendFeed and commented on it, myself. This was eleven minutes ago. I'd figure it would have showed up on my Disqus by now. What do you guys think?
- Brad Williamson
@Andriamirado I use Squarespace to drive my blog, so my implementation might be a bit different from what you need to do. I used the following link to guide me through the process... http://wiki.disqus.net/Squares...
- Brad Williamson
It doesn't really work with me. I think the feature needs some more work. You mean the native "social media comments" feature in Disqus, right? Even if it does work (like on mashable.com or scobleizer.com) I don't like the implementation. Would have liked the same interface as FF uses itself, like in feedly. I hope I made some sense :-)
- TobiasVerhoog.com
I'm still having this issue with my latest webisode. It's been three hours since my post appeared on FriendFeed and none of the 20+ comments have shown up on my Disqus thread yet. What gives?
- Brad Williamson
Okay... It's now been 24 hours since my latest post was published and I still don't have my FriendFeed comments posting on my site's Disqus. I understand it's supposed to take a while to register, but this is taking a bit too long. Gianni... if you're around the FriendFeeds today, can ya help me understand this? I'd like to have a better understanding of how long IT SHOULD TAKE for these comments to register. Thanks.
- Brad Williamson
@Brad The first time it does take awhile, but after that, in a couple of hours, you should get them. I have never had an issue after the first time I integrated the services.
- Shevonne
@Shevonne So you're saying that as I publish with more frequency, Disqus will be more prompt in the registering of the social media activities surrounding the post? This is my second go-around with the service and it's taking longer than the first. But, it's still early in my overall use of the service, so I guess I should anticipate better results in the near future???
- Brad Williamson
No, just the first time took a day or two, and then after that, they started importing in. Are you using Wordpress? Did you install the plugin, and choose that integrate option they have?
- Shevonne
I'm actually using Squarespace, which is an approved Disqus CMS to use. Surely that wouldn't play a part in the delay, would it?
- Brad Williamson
It's been 36 hours since my post was published and I still haven't seen any of my FriendFeed responses on my Disqus thread. I can understand it taking a little while to populate, but, at this point, I'm sorry Gianni... this is taking TOO LONG. Any explanations?
- Brad Williamson
the approved cms list is for simple integration, the friendfeed comment importing requires special plugins for wordpress and such
- Mike Chelen
@Mike I'm using Squarespace and it's set up perfectly. Any ideas?
- Brad Williamson
@Brad where does it say friendfeed comment importing will work with squarespace?
- Mike Chelen
@Brad hmm, guess it should be okay, was it working earlier? if it hasn't included posts for such a long time, something is probably broken D:
- Mike Chelen
@Mike Yep, it worked yesterday (however, it did take almost 24 hours to populate). But with the new article, we're reaching the day and a half marker. I'm a little frustrated over here. I guess I'll just go throw some Pop-Pops... ;-)
- Brad Williamson
Brad: any progress in resolving the delay?
- Mike Chelen
I believe Disqus is having some server issues. Had problems with the WordPress plugin and comment posting. The trackbacks from Twitter and FriendFeed are fast and working, though. Didn't stop the time, but it was definetely below 10mins before they showed on the page. With some constant bugfixing Disqus will become some great service.
- Hendrik Neumann
@Mike Unfortunately not. It's now been a week and a half since a pretty popular post was published and I still don't have any social media reactions ;-(

If there is 1 thing I know, there are probably 1,000+ photos from the other 359 degrees that don't make it look like he is checking out her ass... When it comes down to it, regardless of your political leanings, a nice ass is a nice ass...
Thank for playing Noah, tell him what he's won Bill... I like how you have created this massive faptastic image in your head based off a 2 dimensional image. Your argument would be better served if you could show me the exact same moment from a different angle to prove that the eyes were 100% on the ass... but you probably won't...
- Johnny Worthington
Noah, you of all people should know that the cherry-picking of information and images to serve a twisted political viewpoint is what is at play here. Show me a different angle and we'll play again :D
- Johnny Worthington
I would rather have him look and be himself, than to hide it. There's nothing wrong with looking!
- Michael Fidler
These are two different moments in time. two different women at the same event in a different place at the event yet only one angle presented. YOU can't spin it Noah.

The BBC, reliably, writes another story about how poor Palestinian Arabs have no water and greedy Jews take it all: Mohammed Abbas is sick, with chronic diarrhoea. Not for the first time. He and his family live in a Palestinian village with no running water, no sewage system, and no prospect of getting either any time soon. Watching her son, eyes closed, clutching his stomach on a mattress on the floor, his mother, Sunna, told me she is desperate. Sunna's story is becoming increasingly common in the West Bank. The name of her village, Faqua, means spring water bubbles in Arabic, but access to water here disappeared long ago. The village council says most of the underground springs were appropriated by Israel in 1948 when the state was founded. An Israeli-Palestinian Water Committee was set up in the mid-1990s as part of the Oslo peace accords. But Palestinians say Israel makes it virtually impossible for them to dig new wells or to join Israel's water grid. Much later in the article,...
The most telling reports about Palestinian life / economy and the effects of living under this current military occupation come from the World Bank. The article quotes them: "according to a World Bank report published this year, Israel keeps 80% of water it drills from the mountain aquifer for Israeli citizens."
