Yeah... just talked to someone about that. Turn out that you can't install a new version on the iPhone, you can only "update" (which isn't available yet for Facebook 3.0)... But you can download and install the new version with iTunes.

By the way, FriendFeed has said they're not just flipping a switch on Monday. The current and new UIs will both be available to everyone on www and beta.friendfeed.com respectively for some time. It feels like they're very conscious of the need to transition folks in a orderly, gradual way. I don't mean one users at a time, I mean giving you a choice as to how quickly you want to move. They used the beta vs regular site strategy in the past -- and I agree it is a good strategy to transition in the new features. But I remember quite a few people (regulars I would label them) were caught out/surprised by the final switch when it happened the last time.

Actually copying Facebook helps friendfeed, it's less of a leap for non early adopter minded people. They don't have the "Why is the steering wheel on the right hand" as when entering an English car. To make a few sites the same encourages sliding between the sites.

Robert: Yeah... but what's "poke" anyway? In Afrikaans (the language I use FB in) the word used where is says "poke" in the English is "knyp", which translates back to English as "pinch". Just a short hop, skip and jump from there to "stun" (using a blunt object to the head).

If we're talking about copying, can someone tell me what new features actually haven't been done anywhere before? The whole of the internet industry is based on copying features of competitors - there are very, very few ideas which are new. FriendFeed, for example, copied quite a bit from Jaiku in the first place.

Also, if the FF team in fact (as it seems like now from the latest reporting) did realize that not only they have an edge in technology/infrastructure, but also in terms of UI, and they are really "running" now, it won't even be a fair game anymore. Easy access to relatively cheap energy is what has allowed the R&D and technology sectores of the US to thrive - and should be a major priority goign foraward. Destrying the economy to try and force "alternatives" is just silly. Maybe if the "environmentalists" hadn't been shutting down the nuke industry for 30 years we woudl be better off huh? :)

Thomas - There was an article in the newest (I think) Wired magazine that talks about how much worse it is to buy a new hybrid for that reason. I think they said you'd be better off buying an '87 Tercel, at least as far as environmental impact goes.

Oh my god... Just a few years ago, gas dropped briefly to $0.99 in California, just north of Los Angeles on my trips between to LA & SF. Used to be a $12 trip ($25 RT), now maybe $50-60 ($100-120 RT). Airline tickets might be the way to go... Last time I filled up for below $3/gal in SF was 2/8/08 ($2.99 at Arco in Marin). $ Saving Tips: Bike where possible. Take the transit for distances. Get a motorcycle if you're single. Car pool. Get a small car even for families (you don't need a Suburban; leave the dogs at home). Drive slow, don't step on it. Inflate your tires. Maintain your car under the hood.

Thomas: Cheapest SF gas now is $4.17. I just filled up again... Re: environmental impact of car: Cost of gas still pales next to cost of a new car. For me, 12,000 miles/yr x $0.16/mile = $1,900/yr in gas (used to be $500/yr). Cost of a new car ($3,000-7,000+/yr) plus increased insurance ($300-3,000+/yr) still dwarfs the gas cost, and the envionmental cost is bad. That's why I still drive my 1992 Acura Integra (22-32 mpg).

One thing I'm considering - make FriendFeed my home page. Displace My Yahoo, which has been the incumbent for years. I tend to fire up the browser and go right to FriendFeed anyway.

@marc, i like thwirl as well and use it for everything, but it is buggy for FF reply comments. occasionally when the feed updates it deletes your incomplete comment which is frustrating, so for long replies to FF items i go straight to the web site.

Currently, in the UK, diesel is about $8-$9 a gallon. Filling up costs about $120. Yeah, it sucks, but prices need to go up in order to prompt development of environmentally-friendly technologies and public transport.

My initial reaction was also shock, but after reading the handy-dandy Mahalo link, young Alex probably has Asperger Syndrome. Have any of you ever dealt with a student that has Aspergers? None of us were in the classroom, but it's not unlikely that he was beyond disruptive. If "disgusting" and "annoying" are two words that 5-year-olds use to describe him, imagine what having a larger vocabulary would produce in terms of adjectives.

Your current iPhone will show you that path really easily. Hit map then type in your closest Apple Stores address and then ask it to plot route! I'm super excited about the new 3G iPhone and all the coming updates to the 3G AT&T network. They are saying that we may see speeds of 7+ MBPS as soon as 2009.

Well even 7+ Mbps is decent... Any idea what EDGE gets now? I've seen numbers online of up to 236 Kbps. So a conservative speed of 5 Mbps for 3G would be 20 times faster? That's pretty nuts, if it's true...
