Make sure you start her off with wordpress or posterous :)

Twitter + Worpdress + MacBook Air = "Look Who's Talkin'" :P
- Adam Jackson
Never too young to start, but she should start with microblogging before she moves up to full blogging. Get her a Twitter account and let her bang on the keyboard just like 5 yr old @miamalarkey and make sure you archive those tweets for posterity.

louis - the economy is bad - i got mouths to feed - i would be open to talking to sarah - she seems more the blogger type - matthew likes to apparently beat people up

I think we all know where I stand on avocados, and guacamole, but I don't drink coffee either. I don't *hate* coffee like I do that green stuff though...

Candy in any form. I can do pastries when they are more bready than sweet, but I can't do candy at all.
- Neal Jansons
I hate bell peppers, although I'm not sure that's a "loved" food. If they have been in a pan at a restaurant, I can taste it if the pan was not washed...
- Georgia Diehl
hardboiled eggs and everything they are ingredients in, like deviled eggs, potato salad, macaroni salad, egg salad, etc. oh. and cilantro. :)
- holly
Olives in any form except for oil, but I'm not sure they count since I think it's a fifty/fifty split in the populous.
- Rasmus Lauridsen
could you please repeat the question? (I eat anything and everything except boiled okra - and I don't think that too many people dig that)
- Morgan Haley
Fruit in general. I think this is often perceived as a moral failure on my part.
- s t e v e
cooked fruit. I.e. fruit pies (apple, cherry, strawberry-rubarb, etc)
- Kamala Whitaker
Uhhh just hit me. Peaches especially peach flavoured Ice Tea or peach scented Deoderant and Perfumes... Goes right to my gag reflex.
- Rasmus Lauridsen
Bananas, raisins, jelly/jam. How you people eat these things without wretching is beyond me.
- Brett Kelly

oh yeah, black licorice. Yuuuuuuuuuuucko. Actually, I thought that was widely hated enough that it didn't occur to me to mention it.
- Andrew C
Cilantro, flan (yes, weirdo Mexican.), green bell peppers, brussell sprouts and allergic to peanuts. Can't drink coffee but it seems like a great ritual.
- Gabrielle V
Eggs (except heavily flavored as in deviled or some omelets). Used to hate licorice, but now I've flipped around and I love it.
- Kamilah Gill
Coffee. Love the smell, but can't stand the taste. I'll take a cup of hot cocoa over a cup of coffee any day of the week. Also, mushrooms. Yuck.
- Carlton Prest
Bacon. Pie. Brownies. Coffee (though I don't hate it. Just never acquired a taste for it. Same with beer or any alcoholic drink.)
- pea
I don't do coffee, mushrooms, or eggplant. However, I will HURT a bowl of boiled okra.
- Laura B.
Well I love just about everything. The only thing I can think of is real Whipped Cream....makes my stomach flip.
- Bonnie Foster
Anything with nuts in it or just plain nuts themselves due to fatal allergies. Because of that, I can't see what the big deal with nuts really is. I also hate Starburst, taffy or any kind of teeth intensive candy

Cheese, eggs and seafood. People get really mad about the cheese. I've been told that that makes me "unamerican". Lol.

Beer. And anything flavoured with aniseed or similar - so licorice, black jellybeans, sarsparilla, etc.
- Mellissa
I was going to say black licorice but it looks like lots of other people can't stand that crap.
- Jim Will Miss SP
I can't think of anything. It's hard enough to think of food I don't like
- Rodfather
I wish there was a way for me to collect all this great food from y'all. Though I search, I've yet to find any common food that I dislike.
- Christopher Harley
Licorice and coffee. Rochelle way up there hates them, but that combo sounded good to me. Have to try it.
- Jack DeWitt Smith
Oh and One of my friend's loves head Cheese. Bleeeaugh!! just the name is gross. its not even actually Cheese! its meat pieces from the head of a calf or pig made into a loaf.. yucko.
- Scratch5150
I used to hate black licorice too, until I had it here in Denmark. I must say, I've changed my tune on that. However, still not a fan of marzipan, which seems to be the national icky thing. Oh, and guf... it's like whipped cream only sweeter and ickier and goes on ice cream. That's just wrong. I worship teh Cinnabon...
- Bette Cooper
glad to learn i am not the only one who dislikes licorice!
- barbarars
coffee.. its always company me when i got stress,, LoVE youu Full
- sukmo setyo utomo
So what you are saying, D, is I get all your coffee and guac. That's cool ;) I don't like... canned mushrooms (raw or cooked in anyway) and black and green olives. Love olive oil, though. Tis a mystery.
- Michael W. May
Strawberries - My dad was allergic to them, so it is ingrained in me that strawberries are inherently bad for you. The funny thing is, I love strawberry flavored foods, I just can't have the real thing. I know, I know...I'm missing out.
- Kyle Wegner
Chocolate and cake. Also, chocolate cake.
- Alex Scrivener
I've never found a food that I hate, and I've eaten a lot of weird stuff. The only thing I wasn't nuts about was bone marrow, but still no hate.
- jcunwired
has anybody ever tried 1000years egg? i even could not put it in my mouth...
- Petek(UCB)_
One of the most vile foods I've ever tasted was durian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki...): "Chef Andrew Zimmern compares the taste to "completely rotten, mushy onions." Anthony Bourdain, while a lover of durian, relates his encounter with the fruit as thus: "Its taste can only be described as...indescribable, something you will either love or despise. ...Your breath will smell as if you'd been French-kissing your dead grandmother."
- rowlikeagirl
Love the idea of @Gruml (a Mac native Google Reader app) but want to know more about who is running it, security, and privacy before giving it my Google ID. - http://www.grumlapp.com/
Well, I might continue to use the browser (especially since I'm moving toward GReader's social features). But NeyNewsWire's new GReader-enabled interface is pretty spartan. As far as I can tell, there now way to share from it. And NNW has given up most of the features that made it cool, such as nested folders.
- Chris Baskind
Or get Eventbox and get facebook, twitter, flickr, reddit, digg, etc. as well as GReader in the app ? Also has Growl and an optional HUD.
- Thomas Bøhm
Thanks so much for pointing to this. I was interested in looking at Chromium more, but the daily versions seemed so much better than the old snapshot and I was too lazy to manually check that frequently.

"It took me three days to figure out that there was another side to the tape. That was not the only naive mistake that I made; I mistook the metal/normal switch on the Walkman for a genre-specific equaliser, but later I discovered that it was in fact used to switch between two different types of cassette."

I remember when these first hit our shores... i reckon summer of '79, i was selling clothes in the Village and some very stylish Europeans and Asians were coming thru the City sporting them. We thought it was half magical half Martian.

i have a sony walkman that was manufactured in the 90s that i still use. my first was a panasonic from the early 80s. i don't remember a time where i left home without it.
- docrivs
Yeah @docrivs, and who here thinks their current MP3 player will still be working in ten years? ;)
- Joel Bennett
I used to wonder why there was a special switch for 'Dolby Noise Reduction'. How are you supposed to rock out to 'She Blinded Me with Science' if you turn it down??
- Kevin Fox
I still have one of these which is made in black plastic, shorter-but-thicker, and has a built in record function and speaker. I still use it, too. To record and play back. I don't know what this kid was doing with his walkman, but in mine the batteries last for 5 hours.
- Miss Elle
I still have a Sony Sports Walkman (a bright yellow water-proof one) that I think about retro-fitting to hold an iPod one day for fun.
- Jason Shellen
I always thought it would be a great idea to build an MP3 player in the shape of a cassette. You could pop it into your car's cassette player just like a cassette adapter. FFW and REW would skip tracks, 'Reverse' would shuffle, and the whole thing would be powered/charged by the constant winding. Sadly, I think the window for such a crossover product may have passed.
- Kevin Fox
@Kevin Fox -- They did have cassette thingies with a plug that went into the earphones jack of another device. Originally entitled "car adapter kits" they were intended for Discmen, but worked just as well for fauxPods. || Oh, and your dream has been realized --> http://www.chinavasion.com/product...

Wait, this isn't The Onion. That makes it even funnier. >.<
- Jason Huebel
definately the article of the day, totally made mine

Elle, I know (in fact I use one in my car, connected to a portable Sirius satellite radio reciever) but a fully self-contained player would be pretty cool.
- Kevin Fox
ARghh I'm old, I know how to use a walkman...
- David Foucher
Tempted to buy a nice Walkman off of eBay and bust out some cassettes.
- Jonathan Terleski
Still have an AIWA player around somewhere. Had actually better sound than the Sony. Ah, the nostalgia.
- Max
you can still buy a Walkman cassette player at Best Buy today -- did so not too long ago to transfer a recording to MP3. they are kind of making the cassette sound like an Edison wax cylinder or something. kids today!
- Karim
LOL, well written article, I'll have to try this with my kids. My Sports Walkman though was super advanced as it had Auto-Reverse. I'm sure that would have confused the heck out of this kid as he searched for the repeat button.
- Kenton
@Kevin That link from @Elle *is* for a self-contained MP3-player-in-a-cassette. Me, I'm waiting for the 8-track version.
- Richard Chen
I have a friend with an adapter to play cassettes in her 8-track player. I wonder how that would do with the mp3-player-in-a-cassette in it.

Now all I need is a number where I can call and leave a VM that gets changed into an audio file, and I can get rid of drop.io for good! Yeah, we're never happy are we? Sorry....
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
All we need now is a calendaring system and support for source code.

mp3 sharing works in FriendFeed? Just when I'm thinking to share some 'musiclets' from time to time via Tumblr! mhh.. interesting, really!
- Thierry R. Andriamirado
this is awesome, i was literally just trying to do this last night on one of our team feeds and had to post links to published google docs instead. going to try it out now. it's like they read my mind.
- Mike Elliott
Kol...we use Drop.io all the time here at my office. This would be great as it is supremely simpler. But approved file types and sizes needs to be understood.
- JA Castillo
Mitch, that would be an option, but I can only imagine the opportunity for the wrong voice file to go to the wronge feed...
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
And Akiva is right...where do we start donating?!
- JA Castillo
If we had basic HTML support for first comments on FF, it could almost be used for mail (at least for forwarding and reading mail to and on it).
- Kol Tregaskes
JA, a list of supported file types, limits and sizes is needed... please. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
This will go a long way in convincing some of my Yahoo Groups to move to FF. Although we must have a list of file types supported, retention times and also if there is a max number of d/l's.
- Gil Francisco III
This is awesome but I'm also concerned about the type of people this might bring to the FF community.
- Johnny
Gil, I'm seriously considering moving my Y!Groups list members from there to FF.

.m4a files sent from the iPhone's Voice Memos feature aren't given a player but are making it through the mail to FF feature. Any support for a player coming down the line?
- Christopher Harley
How about .zip s that are password-protected? Reject I hope... (edit) .zip not supported at all, I gather, good!
- Richard pancakhaus Walker
yeah search by filetype absolutely! filetype:pdf, filetype:mp3, filetype:zip, filetype:doc etc.
- Nathan Chase
Christoper: (via Bret) "Unfortunately we only can play back MP3s at this point. The iPhone voice memos are in M4A (AAC), so we really want to support them, but it is a bit more difficult with Flash and our media setup at the moment."
- Ross Miller
I'm not sure that I'm going to use that feature (I rarely share docs over the internet that weren't created in Zoho or GDocs, anyway), but still it looks pretty neato.
- Miss Elle
Bret, do you have any restrictions to protect against music filesharers etc so you do not become an RIAA target?
- Travis Koger
@ Travis: I was just wondering the same.
- Brian Chang
Bret Taylor, a friend of mine uploaded 1 mp3 and it disappeared. Now he can't upload any mp3 file, seeing a [The "" file type is not supported]. Broken message?
- Jason Nunnelley
"You can only upload 3 audio files every day. Please try again later." Too bad because I was really just trying to see what files worked. .wav aint one of them. No audio notes from Evernote, iPhone, iProRecorder. I soooo want to love this but It's not doing what I need it to do. This feature needs to support some kind of multi photo post with a recording appended to the message. That should be right out of the box. Video needs to come right behind it. Music is cool but citizen journalism is even cooler.
- Christopher Harley
I haven't tested this but, how exactly are you determining audio file types, just using the file extension. If so there is a work around with a simple file rename, an example would be if you change an .mp3 to a .pdf and let people rename it once it becomes local on their machine. EDIT: This workaround would also allow video to be transferred.
- Jimminy Fuller
Maybe I don't know enough, but doesn't this kind of open the door to slipping malicious code to unsuspecting users?
- Fleagle

Fleagle: It is possible that someone would do that but FriendFeed is fairly well self monitored. It is still a small group of people in comparison to other networks.
- Jimminy Fuller
Glad for this feature, though perhaps close partnership with Box.net or similar could keep FF storage costs better contained? Not criticizing, just hoping Core Team doesn't get distracted by extending (and babysitting) commodity services. Keep up the great work!
- michael silverton
So we can setup private groups and share questionable files ? :)

Those cell phone companies will have a lot of explaining to do Tuesday when they testify at a U.S. Senate committee hearing on rising text messaging costs. Representatives from Verizon, AT&T, and Cricket will be faced with questions on why those short 160 character SMS messages are costing the consumer too much.
- Leo Laporte
Leo, I believe it was you who reported that based on AT&T's text messaging fee SMS messages cost consumers somewhere around $1500 per MB of data?
- jcunwired
The painful pricing structure of these companies is why I don't really use my cell phone for anything more than the occasional call. I'm not prepared to risk the assorted extra charges that come with SMS, or web use.
- Eoghann Irving
any guesses on what they say will be the reason for these prices ?
- Kashif Khan
http://mobilejones.com/2007... My article on SMS charging hit the front page of digg in 2007. The high cost of SMS has been a known in the mobile industry for a long time. I remember being shocked that many of my web friends hadn't thought of the costs per MB,
- Debi Jones
Not only do they charge absurd prices, but most don't even include texting in the unlimited data plans. I pay 30 dollars a month for iPhone data and pay 15 more on top of that for 1500 texts. THat is outrageous.
- Grant
Interesting that they are questioning Cricket at the same time as the larger carriers. We have Cricket here and they offer unlimited calling including unlimited text messaging for only $40/month. Maybe they want to know why Cricket can offer reasonable pricing while the larger, national carriers continue to gouge their customers.
- Joshua Blevins
They should also be grilled about the cost of data plans.
- Kashif Khan
I don't use text messaging, so I don't have it on my iPhone. That saves me $20 every month. A small victory!
- Paul Ring
I don't have texting either, but got stuck paying 60 cents for two porn spam messages!
- Sandy Curry
I could be wrong, but I thought the reason SMS was so expensive was because they want to discourage people from using it, since texts can saturate the network. You can't really compare it to email, because SMS works like a phone call and doesn't use the data connection.
- Daniel Sims
SMS does use the control channel, but that's it. It doesn't really saturate the network since it doesn't create a connection like an actual phone call. It's a 1-way message and it's not a guaranteed receipt either. Oh, and those that actually look at the cost per MB are incorrect since it's that channel itself isn't used in the same fashion as data connections. SMS uses control channel...
- Ben Hwang
You have to pay to receive SMS? Which Dodo brain though of that one? There would be a revolt in Europe if they tried that!
- David Wright
from twhirl
New Zealand has two networks, one gives 500/1000 texts 'free' for $10. the other gives free weekends if you spend a certain amount during the week.
- Robbie Steele
actually there are that kind of things in Europe. Some service providers (ringtones for example) may charge your phone bill by sending SMS. You can for exmple have a monthly subscription for ringtones and they are charging you by sending two SMSes. This is ofcourse problematic, as the consumer can not easily deny from paying and in a case of dispute the operator stands in between.
- Jani Kenttälä
from IM
True, but those are subscription services, not "normal" SMS messages.
- David Wright
from twhirl
@Ben: If the SMS uses the control channel, which is in use and always active anyway, why should there even be a charge for SMS? The network infrastructure is already there, so really the extra data does not make an impact.
- Nils Sandin
On an additional point, as mentioned above, regular incoming SMS are not charged in Europe (unless roaming abroad), and outbound SMS can cost as little as 0.09€ (13 cents) on a pre-paid plan (w/o commitment for 500 or 1000 messages you might never use).
- Nils Sandin
It's called Capitalism. No government intervention necessary. If the consumer doesn't like it, they should stop paying for it. In other words, move to a company that doesn't charge so much or stop using the service. The market will then be forced to change.
- Chad McCoskey
Chad, because of that system we also have the most primitive cell phone networks and system in the 1st world. Unfettered capitalism isn't always what's best.
- Chrimmus Tad
from fftogo
I think that's part of the problem -- they've all raised their prices at once, so there's no alternative provider. I used to have a sensible option in the US which didn't charge me for incoming messages, but that's been long gone.
- John Flinchbaugh
from IM
I mentioned the Pre but I think I got away with it!
- Kevin J Hatton
Tad, so what? We forget that cell service and a whole host of other things we take for granted now are luxuries not necessities. I love my iPhone but if I felt the prices weren't acceptable or if another option was better either a phone or pricing plan, I'd go there. My point is that it's all well and good to complain, but protest with what companies value most: your money.
- Chad McCoskey
Jerome, you're right about the necessities which is exactly my point. We don't all "deserve" high quality cell service for free and in the case of a non necessity, if all companies offering that product charge the same amount then maybe the populace should decide if they should really spend their money on it. If you don't like the cost of text messages then don't use the service and if the majority of people does that companies will either stop the service or lower prices.
- Chad McCoskey
I have an iPhone with no text plan because they are obscenely priced. I'm not happy about $25/mo for unlimited data but I'm doing my best to get my money's worth. I'll just call or send an email rather than pay $.50 for a text
- Daniel J. Pritchett
from IM
Daniel, thank you for proving my point. More people should follow suit if they don't like the cost. By the way, I have text on my phone and make sure I don't go over my limit.
- Chad McCoskey
are you talking about the iphone now? that could get intense (tweetie doesn't support groups), but i hope it happens.... I was wondering if someone could come up with a bbm like service that utilizes push notifications.
- Frankie Warren
Yeah I switched gears to the iPhone version...

"After weeks of negotiations, I.B.M. withdrew its $7 billion bid for Sun Microsystems on Sunday, one day after Sun’s board balked at a reduced offer, according to three people close to the talks. ... After the legal review, I.B.M. shaved its offer Saturday from $9.55 a share, the offer on the table late last week, to $9.40 a share, said one person familiar with the talks. The offer was presented to Sun’s board on Saturday, and it balked. The Sun board did not reject the offer outright, but wanted certain guarantees that the I.B.M. side considered “onerous,” according to that person."
- Paul Buchheit
from Bookmarklet
By my reckoning, IBM reduced its offer to Sun twice. You can't reduce an offer twice, and retain any credibility as a serious buyer. So IBM will have lost its credibility with Sun's Board - which includes Sun's largest shareholders. That means it's not Sun's management rejecting IBM - it's Sun's shareholders rejecting IBM. Either IBM did this because it didn't really want to do the deal; or IBM is not used to doing deals where it needs to behave in a credible way.
- Simon Brocklehurst
This sounds like what happened with the Apple deal in the '90s.
- Gabe
Simon - that was my thought. This price thing is more indicative of cold feet.
- Hutch Carpenter
Like for relevance. Dislike for content. I think the IBM deal would have been good for Sun, and kept its Java IP in reasonably competent hands. Plus, I hate navigating Sun's web pages; it's sad to say that IBM's are actually better :P
- Joel Webber
Sorry, Joel, but I can't think of any company that was really better off after being acquired by IBM. Rolm? Lotus? Rational? Informix? No on all counts.
- Gabe
@Gabe: Well, maybe you're right about that (I was an intern at Lotus during the IBM acquisition, and people were leaving like rats off a sinking ship). I'm thinking more of what's good for those of us who care what happens to Java. I know most of it's open in one way or another at this point, but it could still use good technical leadership, and I don't really see Sun doing that so much anymore.
- Joel Webber
+1 @Joel. And some of the alternatitives are pretty bad - Imagine Dell owning Sun. Hewlett Packard (or Cisco) have got no idea how to do software.
- Nick Lothian
I like it that IBM and Sun still remain as separate entities.
- Winston Teo
Joel, the problem is that IBM is not technically competent. That IBM people think SWT is a good idea demonstrates they don't even understand the problems, let alone have any ability to figure out high-quality solutions. People tend to confuse IBM's super strong sales and business development capability for it having strong technical ability. IBM's business model is such that the weaker its staff are technically, and the worse its software, the more money it makes. Clever stuff, business-wise.
- Simon Brocklehurst
@Simon - does Sun have alternatives? (Also - it's not like Swing or JavaFX give me huge confidence in Sun sometimes...)
- Nick Lothian
Nick, there's always a "Plan B". In the event of no buyers, Sun can do massive layoffs to return to profitability. If Sun cut enough to have $1B in annual profits, market cap would be higher than IBM's offer, which would provide a better exit for major shareholders. More than possible to do this, given Sun's annual R&D budget is $2B. Re: JavaFX - it's at least modern in concept; SWT is a flawed idea, that was known to be flawed (by everyone except IBM) more than a decade ago.
- Simon Brocklehurst
@Simon - there are other things Sun could do to make a short term return to profits, too eg, try and moneterise Java more aggressively, drop the software business and become a patent troll, etc, etc. I'm not sure any would be good for Java.
- Nick Lothian
@NIck - well, several parts of Sun's software business, including Java, are profitable currently. No need to drop these if they look like staying profitable. The trick is to cut the overhead (under-performing middle managers, sales people that can't sell etc.); and cut the R&D to a size that reflects the size of the business today. I'm not sure growing the top-line in the short-term is realistic in the current economy. A return to profitability, though, should be possible.
- Simon Brocklehurst
when you pull the piece of gum out of the pack it snaps on your fingers like the gum trick.
- rob friedman
from twhirl
@Simon: I really don't want to turn this into an SWT/Swing argument, as I feel like they both suck for various reasons. But I don't think it's fair to say that SWT is proof that IBM lacks technical competence (From my limited experience, IBM's technical competence varies a lot among different groups within the company).
- Joel Webber
With SWT, they wanted to solve a specific problem very well from an end-user's perspective -- i.e. it should feel like a native app, and be fast. And they did so quite well, IMHO, even though it sucks to have to use all those native libraries and platform-specific jars. But the Eclipse UI still feels a lot better to me than IntelliJ, and I think SWT's the reason (obviously this is a matter of opinion, but I know plenty of people who far prefer a SWT UI, so it's at least open to debate).
- Joel Webber
@Joel, you're right - it doesn't prove it; rather I think it illustrates it And clearly, it would be overstating things to say the *whole* of IBM is technically incompetent. However, there are *many*, *many* weak people there. Everyone I meet that has dealt with IBM - customers, collaborators, competitors - has stories to tell; and almost none are positive in terms of technical capability. Conversely, everyone is impressed by its ability to win business and put dollars in the bank.

I want a mac mini for my home theater since I don't have cable. I wanna watch netflix and hulu and listen to my music over the main speaker. sigh but I just bought my macbook. I keep wanting more! Leo, I'm jealous!
- Lise
This all started because I was fed up with the AppleTV. But it's ending up costing considerably more.
- Leo Laporte
It has DVI - easy enough to convert.
- Leo Laporte
you should have gotten the minidisplayport adaptor to HDMI monoprice sells it
- Comptr
Every computer has gigabit ethernet, and circuits are cheap. Always wished that graphics and sound cards included them for distribution
- Keith Barrett
Man, I was wanting to buy the AppleTV. what didn't work for you?
- Jim Williams
It's underpowered and it seems to freeze up a lot. I want to be able to do more, too.
- Leo Laporte
leo can you give us a review on the HDMI to ethernet adaptor when you get it. I have been in the market for one.
- Comptr
Leo, can a solo core run this system or do you think a new mini is requisite?
- Jason L Berman
Definitely looking forward to the full details on your blog.
- Mike Dotta
Sorry, changing this post (it's my first post here). The feeds go down, like a book, not up like a blog! doh! Anyway, I have no powering problems with my Apple TV and no freezes. Both the music and movies sound great on the Bose system! I wish I could set the Apple TV as a wireless base...
- Jay
Wii Remote, RemoteBuddy and Mac Mini = HTPC bliss.
- Jack Zimmermann
I really like Gefen stuff...I like how they seem to build no-compromises full force stuff. How are you going to remote control the Mini? With a hackintosh running Screensharing/ARD? ;)
- Mike Ma
Why not use a Harmony? I've been using a Harmony 880 with my macbook pro (dvi -> hdmi, toslink adaptor to receiver), and it controls everything, including front row, boxee, itunes, not to mention the tv and audio.
- Paul Ward
aah just what the doctor ordered, is there something which also extends the TOS link for sound?
- Jebu Ittiachen
A Vista Media Center computer and an XBox will give you HDMI and a whole lot more functionality, like cable card, dvr, etc. Windows 7 MCE is even cooler. I install this setup all the time for customers.
- Mike
any recommendations on a MCE config. I attempted to put together one with old hardware PVR-150, MCE XP, everything worked except IR Blaster with DirectTV STB (D11-500). Couldnt find a ir code that would work and MCE would not recognize the IR Blaster
- Mike McCrary
Check the Htguys podcast. They just did an update on the new macmini as a home theater component. I believe it was two weeks ago.
- james
@Mike McCrary, did you give thegreenbutton.com a try http://thegreenbutton.com/search...? Are you using a USB MCE remote with a green MCE button on it? Connect the MCE USB IR recvr to the PC, then connect an IR bug from the IR recvr to the DirecTV box. Now all you need is the codes. You can use a Global Cache IR reader to read the codes from the DirecTV remote then program the MCE remote.
- Mike
I wonder if he was inspired after the caller from last weekend needed one for his school?
- OFU
Looking forward to the information on the final build
- Kim Landwehr
I'm planning on trying Boxee, XBMC, and Plex - although Front Row with the EyeTV plugin (PyeTV) is also tempting.
- Leo Laporte
Are there any problems with HDCP data over ethernet?
- jcunwired
I could not get into Plex after using Boxee. The interface for Boxee works better but Plex looks nicer. I just wish Boxee would implement UPnP for my PS3 like Plex can.
- Mark Ogley
I skipped the AppleTV and went right for the Mini, more expensive but haven't looked back. Jumping out to use Safari (with zoom) on a plasma TV is great, especially for community surfing with friends and family. I tried Plex, Boxee, XBMC. Like Boxee features but keep going back to Plex - it just looks so much better.
- James Nobes
Building a linux htpc based on ubuntu, running xbmc, maybe boxee, whichever ends up being better. Looking for ideas on a remote control. Any takers?
- Josh Haley
I'm also putting together an htpc. I'm a Linux guy, but I keeping considering a Mac Mini because most of the software I have in mind runs on either. I ma end up with a Linux backend and a mac mini front-end
- Keith Barrett
My Ubuntu MythTV backend and Mini frontend works well
- James Nobes
To people who say I should follow fewer people: if I can have a conversation with one person in a stadium filled with tens of thousands, I should be able to do the same thing on a webservice where I follow only 1300. Not to mention using filters implies that I know today the interesting and compelling content that others will post tomorrow. Again, just how I use the service. Others may use it differently.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
We should be ab le to filter on the fly... that would help.
- Wolfman-K
Following fewer people reduces the usefulness of the service. Filters might be a good way of handling things, but how do I know they aren't filtering out things that I'd actually want to see?
- Chris, Taskerrific Guy
This is one of the things that's so appealing about the new FF: with filters, I can see in real-time the stuff I *want* to know about as soon as it happens, and peruse the rest as I feel like it.
- Ryan Waldron
Real life.. I see that phrase often in games like WoW and RoM. I prefer the virtual version :)
- Michele
I'm not sure I appreciate the added value of the beta design, particularly in light of the additional management and time it's going to take me to get it right. The current design has flaws (such as content updating out from underneath you when visiting a link) that are further amplified in the new design. There must be a way to address the update and management issues.
- Loren Heiny
The new friendfeed is like talking on a party - to all people at the same time. I feel like a social juggler.
- Dan van Moll
Loren: The link issue could be solved by Paul & co. stealing the Diggbar from under Kevin Rose's nose.
- Chris, Taskerrific Guy
Perhaps they should add settings like Twitterfall has...
- Cris McRae
I am still learning how to use it myself, but I training myself
- Ike
I've said it elsewhere, the more people you follow, the more of a need there is for filtering. It's not a preference, it's essential. It's true in Twitter, it's true in Friendfeed, it's true in email, it's true in Facebook. If you refuse to use the tools they have given you to manage the noise, then you have to deal with the it's design. That's your choice.
- Bwana ☠
I'm pretty sure I don't have 300—let alone 3—people in real life constantly telling me every single thing they do and create in real time. ;) They send me an e-mail, a tweet, or I catch up on their activity in my Flickr contacts list on my own time. This is a very different and interesting shift for social media.
- David Chartier
Mine's not moving fast at all. I suppose I wasn't using it to it's full capacity before... :-\
- David Wynn
Bwana: Filtering isn't the panacea you're making it out to be. There's a reason I follow the people and topics I do, and if I filter them out just to save some peace of mind, I might as well just unfollow them entirely.
- Chris, Taskerrific Guy
Looking for a good filter tutorial link. Anyone?
- Trevor Childs
Subscribe to Bwana he has some good filter examples.
- Jared B. Luther
Yet another person who tells me that, in order to use FF, I need to change my behavior.
- Mistletoe Glen
No way I'm following fewer people. The more I follow, the more fun I have here. So far, not too fast for me. We'll see tonight when it hits prime time.
- Eric @ CSTechcast.com
Well, I still have lists and I can pause the updates, so I can use it however I like. It's definitely fun! I'll be using Friendfeed more, I'd wager, with the new interface. I actually feel less inundated, since I have nifty filtering. I'll be able to follow a lot more people!
- jojo, adventurer
Jason Goldberg: "The system needs to be smart enough to know." Forget lists and filters. Smart automated recommender systems are the future of social media. Why isn't Friendfeed leading the way?
- Sean McBride
Since when is it the user's fault when the user interface doesn't work as expected?
- Albert Willis
To people who say you should filter more for getting the real life: they should get out of their geek-holes and understand what it is to make choices for real life persons. :p
- Ton Zijp
I think the beta is awesome. Looks great on my iPhone in landscape mode.
- Steve Sill
i don't agree with the premise that because real time = real life folks should be able to keep up with their interests by scaling down their activity or number of people they happen to follow on a site like this. that's a nice simple thing to write, but it's certainly not practical if you're looking to interact with people on friendfeed. it's sites like these that afford all kinds of info to be exchanged among all kinds of people -- much more than in "real life." if the point of exchanging information lies
- Cee Bee
How about having less followers? I don't understand this kind of maths really. If everyone starts following less people just to use a "tool", your own voice won't be noticed. I'll follow everyone I think he/she could bring more knowledge/fun to me and it'll be up to the tool to satisfy my needs, not the opposite
- directeur
with a few people what's the point of being on a site like ff?
- Cee Bee
Indeed, _very_ aggressive "hide" and "unsubscribe" are at least turning FF's "river of shit" UI a bit more palatable.
- Dossy Shiobara
Don't make ME fix your problems. If it's too fast, it's too fast, and FF will have to live with the consequences.
- Mistletoe Glen
In real-life, I don't have 1000 friends. And Leo, we're not friends in RL, right?
- Merry Xmas FFeeders - AJ
I asked yesterday how anyone actually kept up with hundreds of people on twitter. Never got a response, so I figure people actually don't.
- Barry Biddlecomb
from twhirl
People mostly use Twitter as a bullhorn; I doubt that many feeds are being read very carefully.
- Sean McBride
or just hit pause. it's not that big of a deal. you just hit refresh like you always have.
- Nathan Chase
Agree with Tina. Filtering for topics implies a preset agenda of interests which makes it much less interesting. And if real life was so great more people would live there :-)
- Todd Hoff
I didn't even know there are filters. They could make it easier to notice and use like put a filter button there on the page. Or explain that you can do that and how to do it.
- Nathan Mylott
It's not a matter of telling you HOW to use something, it's a matter of telling what's available to help you DEAL with data overload. Lists and Filters are there to help consume the data in a manner which is pleasurable. It's not the only way to use FF, but it's something to ADD to your existing way of using the tool to make it better. I realize not everyone uses the tool like I do, but the features I talk about are there to HELP you manage the madness.
- Bwana ☠
For example, not everyone uses labels in Gmail to manage their emails. But I've recommended some people use labels to organize the information and it has helped them. For others, it hasn't. The point remains, that labels are there to help with that and they are worth a try to see if it works. It's part of the toolset. Same is true with Lists and Filters on FF. They are there to help you. Give them a try. If they don't work, fine. Plenty of people have found they do work and that's why we say use it
- Bwana ☠
Me, I have an "Everything" list so I can see all my followers... but sometimes, I need a break and I move to my other lists or fiilters to munch on those. I spend the most time in the Everything list though. My home feed consists of individuals who I have liked or commented on more than 50 or 60 times..
- Bwana ☠
I'm not sure following fewer is the best idea. The pause button puts the whole site back into static mode, i.e. what the old FF is. So just hit that. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
It's already gotten better, since yesterdays hype slowly went down. I'm quite happy with the (number of) followers now... It's manageable.
- Holger Eilhard
Personally I can not see what all the hoopla is about. May be due to not following a hunndred people
- Greg
I just started using it, and I love it so far.. I can now see what Leo and Steve were so excited about.
- BASEnet
Liberal use of the "Hide" link works wonders to keep things clean. Also, adding ?num=100 to the end of the beta URL keeps things on the first page (thx Stupid Blogger/FFer (aka Tina)!)
- Aaron Fowler
...And... Leo haven't commented here after 23 hours. Busy man. Busy man.
- Merry Xmas FFeeders - AJ
I like how powerful the filtering is.
- David Delony
just wish there was some type of sms capacity, like twitter
- Steve Austin
Well Said Leo: "Real-Time = Real-Life" and I can't wait for Facebook and Twitter to get real!
- Garin Kilpatrick
@Leo: real life is throwing up on your shoes, too. don't want that.
- MikeAmundsen
Proving itself a staggering 42 times faster at rendering JavaScript than IE 7, our benchmarks confirm Apple's Safari 4 browser, released in beta today, is the fastest browser on the planet. In fact, it beat Google's Chrome, Firefox 3, Opera 9.6 and even Mozilla's developmental Minefield browser.
- Leo Laporte
As a developer, I always laugh when these raw performance stats are touted. Even js apps that consist of hundreds of lines of code would show no perceptible difference to users no matter the browser. Standards compliance trumps engine performance every time.
- Sprague D
While watching Hulu and other premium online content on your big screen TV isn’t a threat to cable companies right now (TV watching is at an all time high, and getting high-quality content from PC to TV isn’t that easy yet), Comcast can see the writing on the wall, so last week it mobilized its own online video initiative to provide its customers with a way to watch premium TV programming online as part of a cable subscription.
- Leo Laporte
I don't really watch TV, but my wife does, so I'd be prepared to pay more for a bigger pipe, and have net TV on demand for her, and do away with cable TV itself.
- Ian May
One word: yes... that is if I can goto an online catalog to download/play them--like a Hulu service in higher quality
- Brad Arsenault
I would if I lived in the us and it did not count towards my bandwith used
- Rob Cairns
Oh, I see. Force the competition out by putting pressure on startups like Boxee to stop listing Hulu with their services, all the while working on your own service. I would never give those criminals a dime for this.
- Fleagle
Well Comcast is about the best offering around here, It's considerably faster than AT&T DSL,(who I wouldn't touch with a bargepole) and we don't have a landline into here anyway, so Comcast is the only option. It's the upload speeds that I often find inadequate.
- Ian May
Robert said on the Gillmor Gang that he got another 3G iPhone to replace the one he lost.
- Steven (optionshiftk)
Three new iPhones. Maryam's was breaking. Patrick had his stolen at school (and saved up to buy another one). I left mine in a taxi cab in New York and finally saw reason again to get the 3G. Sigh.
- Robert Scoble
So much for waiting for the Pre, hehe.
- Alex Scoble
Alex: I am getting the Pre when it comes out. I will cancel the fourth line we have with AT&T when that happens.
- Robert Scoble
Joel. Well, Milan gets my old one. :-)
- Robert Scoble
Robert: If you sell your 3G iPhones let me know.
- Alex Sauceda
I'm paying my tax this week. Got a new 17" MBP on its way.
- Graham English
I paid my tax today too. Got my 15" MPB ...
- Lynne d Johnson
And watch the next version of the iPhone come out in June/July... now that would suck.
- Michael Forian
I wonder what the average lottery player spends on lotto and scratch tickets every quarter. At least the Steve Jobs tax gets you cool stuff.
- Christian Burns
Punter. I bought a 8-way 3Ghz MacPro for streaming video today. Ouch.
- Leo Laporte
Recession, what recession? If everyone was like us Friendfeeders, and kept buying cool toys, the recession would disappear like that!

When you signup to Last.fm and scrobble what you listen to, you are trusting us with your listening data. We take this very seriously. The old-timers on Last.fm who’ve been with us since the early days can attest to this – we’ve always been very open and transparent about how your data is used. This hasn’t changed. We never share personally identifiable data such as email and IP addresses. The only type of data we make available to labels and artists, other than what you see on the site, is aggregate data of listeners and number of plays.

Greg Lastowka, an associate professor at the Rutgers School of Law who is writing a book on Internet law, said Facebook’s language was not unusual. “Most Web sites today offer terms of service that are designed to protect and further the interests of the company writing the terms, and most people simply agree to terms without reading them.”
- Leo Laporte
Same story, no registration required at IHT: http://www.iht.com/article... Mark Zuckerberg, the chief executive of Facebook, said in a blog post on Monday that the philosophy "that people own their information and control who they share it with has remained constant." Despite the complaints, he did not indicate the language would be revised.

looks like I'll be sticking with vista as I got stuck with a HP with one a year ago, and it doesn't look like MS will be kind to us
- BCK

Shhhhhhhh Pj, that's a secret! Don't tell too many people or MSFT will resurrect the Seinfeld / Gates ads again. Oh, the horror.

Users who buy Vista machines between July 1, 2009 and January 31, 2010 will be eligible for the free Windows 7 upgrade. Will anyone purchase a computer before July 1st?
- Phillip Stewart
Like Like Like Like Like Like Like Like Like Like Like. Ooops. Take that back.
- Martha
Anybody who EVER bought a machine with Vista should get a free upgrade.
- jcunwired
Booo! No free upgrade for those of us with vista pre2009... B etter only be a $50 upgrade. :P
- Chrimmus Tad
I'm so confused. Why is everyone so excited about this? They always do this. When a new OS has been announced (and is being rolled out to manufacturers), they give free copies to users who buy computers without the OS pre-installed. Apple does the same thing, allowing people who bought computers within 20 days or so of a new model/release to return it and get the new one (difference is, Microsoft's releases are announced way in advance and must cover more time since it's more difficult to roll out.
- Brandon Titus
This really isn't much of a story since they did the exact same thing just before the Vista launch. Customers who bought new machines with XP got a voucher for a free upgrade to Vista. The real story would be if Microsoft DIDN'T offer the same free upgrade this time.
- Ken McNamee
I just bought a new laptop running Vista. I have used XP up until now, just getting used to Vista. I doubt I would change OS for quite a while.
- Edward Kimble
The delicious title is a bit misleading, almost troll-ish. The actual title of the article is "Will There Be a Free Upgrade to Windows 7?". Free upgrades a few months before the actual release is nothing new. If they offer it free for all Vista users I'd be very impressed.
- KyleHase
from twhirl
If Microsoft did give Win7 as a free upgrade to vista it will help them in many ways. It will help keep Vista sales going, as stories are starting that people are already waitting for 7 to come out. It will help makeup with people that thought they got ripped off with Vista. Lastly it may slow down or stop apple adds that attack Vista day after day.
