Curt, right, after listening to Scoble on a panel about the future of Journalism, and he was the only one "journalizing" it via Kyte, I wrote a post that the future of Journalism is a video camera or in this case a camera. I remember that it was the camera and video camera that stopped Vietnam for instance

And, putting aside for a bit whether or not CNN ignored the story -- we're now getting news that NBC's Tehran office may have been raided and the BBC has been told to "get lost." Under oppressive, censoring regimes like we have in Iran, North Korea and China -- citizen journalists empowered by new communications tools will be the ONLY way we get accurate news from these regions.

US media in general has historically been very bad at covering anything outside of the USA. As an English person travelling in the US it's very very noticeable how little foreign news you guys get to see. It's almost as if they have decided the rest of the world is not interesting enough for you. And also a possible contributor to many US citizens appalling knowledge of world geography. Hopefully the freely available world news via the internet will force them to change.

Gilbert, the thing that's offensive about it is how intimately connected our foreign policies are to this event. It's a very big deal that Iranian citizens are in conflict with their government. We hear something about Iran's efforts to seek nuclear weapons nearly every day. This is a huge news event in that context.

Robert, I don't think it's fair to continue with the idea that "most Americans don't care." I think most of us don't care to be lied to, scammed, conned, and continuously let down by our leaders. One reason the newspaper industry is in freefall is Americans are consuming their news elswhere. It's not primarily CNN, Fox News, or anything else traditional. The revolution in news isn't about cheap or fast or entertaining. It's about truth.

Jason: Traditional media is in freefall because of lack of money via advertising mainly. And that is a direct result of dwindling circulation figures for the newspapers and magazines. You can't charge multi million circulation ad rates if you don't have multi million readers anymore. Gilbert, you're correct. One of the reasons for newspaper failure was their own refusal to adapt to a new market. However, the edge blogs and new media in general have over traditional media is more about the quality of the information. Secretly we all distrust traditional sources and believe individuals who are just sharing their personal stories. That genie is out of the bottle and won't ever be put back. It's too easy to get news directly from real people in real time.

Robert: CNN was weak but NYT was not and The Atlantic's chief blogger, Andrew Sullivan, delivered superb coverage on the reports out of Iran today. Easily identifiable reporters and cameramen were threatened - one camerman from the UK's Channel 4 News was arrested when capturing the protests earlier today. He has since been released. OTOH, there were journalists Twittering events from Iran too.

The freedom of information given by access to the internet and satellite TV services is proving a headache for governments trying to keep populations under control. The first instances of this resulted in the downfall of the Soviet Empire and the crumbling of the wall. It will continue to happen as citizens in those countries realise the freedom they apparently enjoy is not really freedom at all.

They were given a vote. They believe the government has defrauded them. Gilbert: for some reason friendfeed got a lot of overseas fans. The friendfeed team noticed this and has added features for these groups (Iran, Turkey are two I remember). It is indeed very smart, but Silicon Valley has thousands of Iranians, so it's a brilliant way to have your service spread from Silicon Valley to other countries.

I didn't read all the comments, but from what I read you're only getting one vision of this news from my Iranian friend. The other fact is, in the last week, Mousavi kept telling his followers that we are the winner if there's no fraud. The election was held and they lost. So the only way to justify it is to say that there was fraud and they cheated and so on. Actually they don't have any proof of it yet.

Right decision ???? This changes nothing. Anyone can get hold of a second hand phone, and new SIMs are 10-a-penny. Hell, one of my housemates ordered one and O2 sent out about 5 others with it for free. Here's an idea not everyone will like: Firefox and IE should drop their rendering engines and switch to Webkit (used by Safari and Chrome). Then we wouldn't have the added annoyance of targeting three different DOMs.

I'm sure someone will say something about "competition", but since it's open-source, they can continue to compete, just as Google has with their new JS engine, V8. Since everyone would be starting from the same point, they would all have the burden of not breaking compatibility.

Yeah, an IE "plugin" is the way to go. That way users don't even need to change their habits or UI, and it could potentially fall-back to IE for sites that still don't work with webkit. There's just no advantage to having different rendering engines at this point. It's high cost, low benefit.

Rob, the problem that silpol is presumably saying exists with a monoculture is that everybody is vulnerable to the same diseases. This has happened in the past where security vulnerabilities in compression and encryption libraries have made huge amounts of unrelated software vulnerable. But Paul has a good point that a dominant platform certainly makes things easier for the developer, which is why there are millions more apps for Windows than any other platform.

That has been proved wrong: all the web browsers out there already have the same working basis (Web Standards) and still they messed things up. What makes you believe that this would be different?

Notice that for all the women they soften the jaw, while squaring it for men. Everyone also gets a slightly thinner face and upturned almost smiling lips.

@SB yeah and the forehead adjustment... almost like there is a triangle with the forehead at the point and they flip it so the chin is the bottom of the triangle... weird.

Lindsay: whenever sketching generic faces, the face starts as an inverted triangle and the eyes appear a third of the way down from the top of the forehead; lips and nose appear below and above (respectively) a line 1/3 up from the chin. Looks like these pictures are rearranged to meet that particular school of drawing.

+1 @Claude I was thinking the same thing! Incorporate this software in wearable monitor glasses, and the whole world would be beautiful! I'll bet we can look for these on the shelves in the U.S. just before November. Social media and reality enhancement software have put Winston Smith out of a job.

The artist proportions were laid out by the Greeks as the perfect human, that's not being used here. This beautification engine, I think, builds on top of a previous study where some students tried to mathematically identify attractiveness. They had participants rate the attractiveness of head shots from yearbooks. What they found was there was a high correlation b/w the geometrically "average" face and high attraction. stances between the individual elements of the face and their relative sizes. IIRC the software adjusts elements so they statistically/geometrically complement each other. It's not actually working toward a golden set of proportions, but a set of proportions appropriate for the individual as defined by the masses. I wouldn't think of it as "facial discrimination" so much as "deviation from ones potential".

Well let's see, property and stock markets are down in many countries and there is constant talk of a world economic slowdown. If the tech sector isn't in the same situation, all this is bound to have some flow-on effect sooner rather than later. No, I don't think there is a bubble.

jj: yes, but there are still a lot of companies who have funding that the overall market will not reward. I think there's a bit of a bubble in that there's a lot of people who have gotten funded by VC firms who haven't yet felt the more general economic pain that's out there.

Of course we are in a bubble. that's the way our economy works now. The reason is that we have too many unregulated speculators in the markets today.

I would call this "statistical occurrence." It is pure statistics, not a bubble. There are many samples of similar nature which occur. The higher the size of the sample (overcrowded online entertainment market) the more likely is the occurrence of a highly-improbable event. Funding such a startup as redux would otherwise be improbable. good thing about stats is that 90+% of it is there to support the few.
