Konstantin - Agreed, that new camera is going to be a big boon to AR apps, as will the compass.IN fact I wrote about this last week. http://radar.oreilly.com/2009... However, the new camera functionality is only available with the new hardware. This article is about the new OS -- which I am running on my First Generation phone.

@Bbird - Thanks. I had forgotten the tooltip. Updated.
@peaboy - To me this cartoon sums up people's fears about using this new technology -- they'll forget that it's on. When people ask why they would ever want it on, I think that your boating example is a great reason to point to. Thanks!
@N7TCF - I haven't heard that story, but it certainly seems like it could happen. Alerting people you don't know to your movements/future location can be dangerous (or embarassing as illustrated by XKCD).

@Not A Geek Girl - I don't find this to be a sexist cartoon or sentiment. What is described could happen to anyone of either sex. Instead I think that this cartoon captures people's fears about this type of technology.

@Harry - Do you have a cellphone? Do you use a computer? Do use a credit card? If so you are being tracked voluntarily. After you realize that then it just becomes a matter of who do you want your information shared with.

@Julie Very true, however how often do you eat a healthy meal really quickly? Many Americans eat fast food and they eat it quickly. Of course people *could* eat quickly so that they could take a two-hour walk, but do they?

@jason Apple's lack of support for background location updating is very frustrating. Until Apple adds it your location would be updated whenever you accessed the Maps and/or Latitude application. This is a poor substitute for constant updating, but it is still better than no method of updating.
I discussed my disappointment with Apple's plan in my article Apple's Big Location Chance, Or When Is The iPhone Going To Use That GPS? last year.

@Busti - Fixed, thanks. I am not used to URLs being case-sensitive.

@uggh Your comment will not be deleted. We have a lot of new speakers. Mark F. is one of them. To my knowledge he's never spoken before. Jane is returning after last year's hiatus with a brand-new project to share. Other new speakers include Tony Jebara of Sense Networks, Mok Oh of Everyscape, Ashwini Osaokan of Intel Research, Jennifer Magnolfi of Herman Miller and Christa Hockensmith of EMRTC. There are topics that we are continuing from last year, but I would argue that there is a new focus with an increase in Synthetic Biology and Materials especially. Who or what would you like to see included in the program? BTW, the jump-the-shark gentleman you reference is in a Sponsored session.

@carl Youngblood Google is doing Street View. They are enabling Map Maker. @Steve Feldman Why is this any better/worse than maps or GPS? The data is not realtime (yet). I think it will serve more good than ill.
