:: The Playlist ::: First Look: Grant Heslov's 'The Men Who Stare At Goats,' New Look At James Cameron's 'Avatar,' Trailer For Michael Haneke's 'The White Ribbon' - http://theplaylist.blogspot.com/2009...
I am getting a bit psyched for Men Who Stare At Goats, which, if you haven't read the Jon Ronson book or seen his accompanying video series, basically stop what you're doing now and seek it all out.

Herzog & Lynch & Dafoe & Sevigny & awesome: 'Inspired by true events, "My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done," is a story of ancient myth and modern madness. Brad Macallam, an aspiring actor performing in a Greek tragedy, commits the crime he is to enact in the play by killing his mother. The mystery unfolds in a series of flashbacks displaying the psychological destruction of the killer set off by an ill-fated white-water kayaking trip in a distant land."'

A gallery exhibit after my one true heart: "The Palais de Tokyo's ongoing exhibition, Spy Numbers, takes as its starting point the mysterious and vaguely distressing Numbers Stations."

But somehow I'd missed this shot of Kevin Eldon and clearly Darren Boyd from July and just thought all we had to go on was the Sheffield messageboard kids' description.

First official shots of Chris Morris's movie give you little more than goats and RPGs, but I guess that's to be expected. 'With editing on the film under way, Warp reports that "its small tornado of industry is now trapped and humming in a box".'

Mme. S. Brin reports back from a LA Infinite Jest party with news that John Krasinski's adaptation of Brief Interviews will be given limited release this month, which, omg.

Old, uber-bizarro, rhythmic-soundscapey piece by local fave Caural, who created it entirely from singles phone-dating service disfluencies: "My job entailed listening to thousands of low-quality recordings of eager singles describing themselves ... and then editing each for content and efficiency of space (i.e., removing the "uh"s and "um"s which spelled disaster for each caller)."

I would just like to point out that I just imdb'd this and saw that Crispin Glover and My Hollywood Girlfriend Lizzy Caplan are also slated to appear, and therefore it is probably already my vote for movie of the year 2010.

Mountain Goat John Darnielle on California's elimination of domestic violence shelter funding: "I spent Christmas & New Year's Eve of 1983 in a motel with my mother & my sister; we were lucky. My mom had a job. When I consider that mothers & sons & daughters without the means to get themselves into a Motel 6 might have to spend a night with their abusers after having found the strength to flee -- well, I wish I had a turn of phrase that describes what it feels like to think of people in such situations, but I don't."

Hey, remember Zak Sally, you know, he played bass in Low back in the day? And how he does comics and stuff? Well he just put together a solo album called Fear of Song, and hand printed/glued/numbered/signed/packaged every single one real beautifully. You should look/listen here and then probably order it.

'The "Seinfeld" reunion Larry David swore for a decade would never happen is finally happening -- but only within the fictional universe of "Curb Your Enthusiasm."'

"After a couple years of promises, LOCAL CURRENCY, a compilation of singles by Franklin Bruno, is back from the manufacturer and in hand. A bonus: everyone who orders gets a free EP of Franklin covers by Mac McCaughan, Laura Cantrell, Lou Barlow, and Jennifer O'Connor. It's really good. But wait, there's more. I don't have it yet, but the first 150 to order will also receive a free 7" of never-before-heard songs by Franklin."

Byrne on U2's mega-multi-360-sensurround-spider stage show: "It could be professional envy speaking here, but it sure looks like, well, overkill, and just a wee bit out of balance given all the starving people in Africa and all." Which, weirdly, is the exact same immediate gut reaction I had, starving Africans and all.

"This collection of David Foster Wallace MP3's was lovingly collected by Ryan Walsh in early 2009. Included herein are many, many files under the following category headings: * Interviews & Profiles * Readings (Now includes the BIwHM audiobook!) * Eulogies & Remembrances * 'Brief Interviews' Staged Readings"

I'm gonna go ahead and admit I kind of want to see this guy opening night. What a lineup! Clark Duke alongside Corddry alongside Craig Robinson alongside Cusack?? C'mon. It's a comedic worlds-colliding.

Bravo, America: "In terms of per-screen-average In The Loop is positively dominant, pulling in more than $25k per screen, which is well more than double the performance of anything in the top ten and more than four times better than most at the top of the list. "
