Recently my cousin's head was run over by a car. This is what's left of her helmet. My cousin completely survived because of this helmet. Please think of this before riding a bike without a helmet next time!
This happened to a friend of mine at the beginning of the month. He didn't do so good in the accident, but the helmet obviously saved his life. Thankfully is on his way home tomorrow: http://www.caringbridge.org/visit...
- Steve Lacey
I used to ride my bike without the helmet even though it is mandatory in Chennai, India. But after reading this I am not even going to the next street in my bike without helmet.
- Sudar
I never wear a helmet. When hearing things like this, I always think of this article.http://news.bbc.co.uk/1.... In the Netherlands no one wears a helmet. It seems safe to me.
- Peter Stuifzand
I was hit while riding to work in summer 2006 & did not want anyone to touch my helmet at all costs. If my brain was scrambled, I did not want anyone to touch my egg:) I highly recommend a helmet especially if you think you will not need one! Mine was almost the same color too & manufacturer, but there is no conspiracy there:)
- Roney Smith
Bicyclists/motorcyclists that don't wear helmets are better called future organ donors
- Brian Sullivan
Thanks for sharing. I ride often at traffic time between cars. always wear my helmet...itsg good to know that It does work :)
- jonathan
from twhirl
Wow, glad to hear your friend is doing well after that. I agree, helmets save lives. Regardless, I've many intentional close-calls by drivers who don't want to share the road. Unfortunately, this is the common attitude where I live (southern US).
- pete
we wear helmets for everything: mtb, snowboarding, wakeboarding, skateboarding & even surfing - skulls are fragile why not put a protective layer around it (i also try real hard to not ride on streets - a high percentage of drivers are oblivious to bike riders)...
- mike "glemak" dunn
I always ride in my helmet and stay to bike lanes as much as possible. Nice to know the safety tools work. Now, if I can just avoid that NYPD cop with a penchant for knocking people off their bikes. Hopefully, he won't transfer to LAPD.
- Jason Toney
Peter Stuifzand, my cousin would be dead if she did not wear her helmet. That article is BS. Wear your helmet!
- Jesse Stay
from twhirl
Point blank. You are a moron if you ride without a helmet. Sorry, but that's true and you're just going to play into Darwinian theory should you continue to ride without one. Any 'real' cyclist (e.g - you've been hit by a car - and yes, I have been) will tell you this without reservation. Helmets work without a doubt.
- AJ Kohn
I survived a nasty motorcycle crash in my youth and would also be dead without that helmet - which cracked in 2 like an egg (that would have been my head, as the nurse aptly put it!).
- Susan Beebe
A friend who's a cop refers to motorcycles as donorcycles whenever she sees someone riding without a helmet. I figure that applies for bicycles, too.
- ha3rvey (free hugs!)
I was on the way to work Monday morning while it was raining, when the third car in front of me spun out of control and flipped twice into a ditch. When I pulled over to help her out she was just fine. She only had a scratch on her left shoulder from the broken window and was not hurt anywhere else. THE REASON: She was wearing her seat belt. It's nice to hear that these devices are actually helping us!
- David Cook
Awesome. I ride my bike to work everyday and I see a lot of people with no helmets on. I don't know how they do it.
- Clint Ecker
Wow! I wear mine! Didn't for years - I was lucky I guess. Thanks for posting that!
- matthew hunt
OMG... Jesse, do you have a link other than here on FF? I have friends whose kids refuse to wear theirs, and seeing this may help.
- Cyndy
If it's nice enough to ride, I probably won't be bothering with the human-powered bike any longer. I always wear a helmet on my gas-powered bike.
- MiniMage TKDteacher of FF
As long as we won't have mountains, we Dutch will not wear those things. Otherwise we won't be able to recognise the tourists on bikes.
- Ton Zijp
Thanks for sharing - I had a mishap with a car, wasn't wearing a helmet at the time, was lucky. If they don't see you, it doesn't matter either way. Wear the helmet!
- Rick Bucich
This isn't as extreme as this but when I fell off my bike onto a sidewalk and broke my arm, I thought I was fine for a while. Later, my dad noticed that the whole front of my helmet was all scratched up and the visor in front was torn off! I realized that if I wasn't wearing my helmet on the 2 minute trip down the road, I probably wouldn't be typing this comment right now! Not that I'd be dead but I would have suffered some head damage, limiting my ability to do most things.
- Kevin Lyons
Helmets for cyclists are mandatory in Australia. Still gives me the shudders when I'm travelling and see bareheaded bicyclists on the roads.
- Kate Foy

well it seems to be working now, but earlier on Fred Wilson was able to tweet or so I saw.Maybe Fred has a inside track since he is an investor in twitter....

i always wanted to see a total eclipse, I don't know why but in India its always partial :(
- Rahul Das
@Rahul Das : Its not true that Total Eclipse hasn't been seen through India. May be you have just missed it. To be precise. The Total Solar Eclipse Happened in total solar eclipses ... 1980 /Oct 1995 / Aug 1999 ... and would happen on July 2009 / Jan 2010 ..dont miss those :-)
- Nishant
I may have. but every eclipse I can recall has been a partial one.
- Rahul Das
I remember seeing a total eclipse when I was in elementary school. It had to have been less than 4th grade. It was pretty cool.
- David Z
I had a pigeon wave a knife at me once. Those mofos mean business!
- Jim Stanger
I agree with Mona, I don't like pigeons, they're disgusting.
- Oli Kenobi
Mona: thank you! I was just watching Samantha Brown on travel channel, eating pigeon dumplings in Xi'an, and I said the exact same thing..

- Jeff P. Henderson
Wow. It took you that long Robert. You early adopter you. Did someone squat your name on identi.ca or did you get @scobleizer?
- Brian Daniel Eisenberg
I was an early adopter of Twhirl, but when Twitter had all of its problems I moved away from clients and just used the Web page.
- Robert Scoble
why does twhirl keep notifying me of the same content
- stunnaman
from twhirl
All the identi.ca talk is really starting to wear away on my nerves. Identi.ca is just one instance of laconi.ca, and as such is just another single point of failure just like Twitter. In fact, it's probably no more stable than Twitter was two years ago. All these tools pointing at identi.ca totally miss the fact that the real advantage of laconi.ca, the open source service, can run on many other servers and not just identi.ca. However, there's no way tools like Twhirl can support all laconi.ca instances.
- Ken Sheppardson
twihrl gives me nothing but problems. I can't use my scrollwheel because it scrolls two full pages with each click, on every PC i've used it on, regardless of configuration. It's a memory hog for the little it does, and everytime I click a link, it opens the page twice. I' ve tried reinstalling it to no avail, anyone else having these problems?
- Richard Lawler
from twhirl
Is there any way to easily add all twitter friends in identi.ca?
- Mike Hussein Cohen
from twhirl
Yeah. I use it for the "other" services I use, and also when I have my Macbook hooked up to my 56" HD set, but I really wish they would consolidate the 4 windows into single window with multiple tabs.
- Brian Daniel Eisenberg
Ken: personally it's just another point to communicate with you other than Twitter. Our system is becoming stronger thanks to these. Now we have FF, Twitter, and Identi.ca and Plurk. Four ways. Will all four systems go down at the same time? Doubtful.
- Robert Scoble
@mike3K ah, the holy grail of data portability! when is open mesh arriving!
- The Pageman
I'd kill for them to add an RSS reader into it.
- Bradley McSpinn
Why not just use Ping.fm and Gtalk as a client?
- Rutger Blom
I like Twhirl. They keep adding support for other clients.
- Jim Williams
twhirl def needs an rss reader and a way to combine account windows into one
- stunnaman
from twhirl
I used to like Twhirl but now I use TweetDeck. It is amazing and its a great way to manage your Twitter feeds. You should give it a try. A new version is about to come out with notifications if that is one of the things you are looking for. Im testing it right now and it works really well.
- pcnerd37
I moved from Twhirl to TweeterDeck and then to FriendFeed and Identi.ca back to FF.
- Scot Duke
Why is it that, when I try to update Twhirl, Firefox just wants me to download an .air file? When I click the .air file, nothing happens.
- Bradley McSpinn
Robert: I think you mentioned that on GG yesterday... wanted to respond then :-) Relying on four+ independent services (or four devices for that matter ;-) might work for a select few, but for this stuff to move beyond the "twitterati" some service needs to provide utility-like reliability. "Oh, my phone is broken today, I'll just write a letter" won't be acceptable to the main stream. A true open source twitter-like cloud could do that. Identi.ca can't, at least not any time soon.
- Ken Sheppardson
seconding and thirding @Mike Szczygiel: "twhirl def needs...a way to combine account windows into one"
- Derrick Burns
Twhirl's creators have promised, very soon, some other than multiple floating windows. But I don't get the popularity of TweetDeck. I found the interface overly rigid and far less usable. Twhirl is what I'm sticking with -- and I keep notifications off. (Notifications, beyond direct messages or even replies, seem like a time suck to me.)
- Peter Kirn
from twhirl
@Peter Kirn: not to mention that the incessant 'bing!' on every tweet is enough to make you schizophrenic.
- Derrick Burns
Scoble just said shiznit. This is now tagged as BEST TWEET EVAR.
- Rob Diana
But are you going to come up with a Twhirl gang sign to complement the FriendFeed gang sign? Fotwizzle.
- Ontario Emperor
using post-to-any-service clients is like suffering from disorganized schizophrenia at a block party. it just ain't fun for all participants
- thomas marban
from Alert Thingy
identi.ca feels like a step backwards from FF.
- Thomas Hawk
I also like Twhirl. It's simple and yet elegant.
- imabonehead
@Thomas I think Identica (could be) a good independant service alongside FF, depending on how they grow their service of course.
- Roger Kondrat
Its got the twitter disease. Thats why you should just come on over to friendfeed. we are talking about you here anyway :-)
- Richard Binhammer
very good :-) (but ... can't wait when frf has an ability to add an arbitrary service (user-generated catalog of services available))
- Nikolay Samokhvalov
what about the facebook status updates? I hope that's coming...
- Rahul Das
Nice work with the status, I would like to see DailyMugshot introduced!
- Joe Dawson
Great! Just added identi.ca; configuring brightkite too.
- Parth Awasthi
Paul, given Identi.ca uses the Twitter API it would be nice if we could respond via Identi.ca in the same way you can with Tweets. I presume implementing it wouldn't be overly hard (where as Plurk of course is another matter)
- Duncan Riley
@Rahul FB status would be cool, but there is no public RSS feed. There is a feed, but it requires a key, which would require you to type in your username/password.
- Hao Chen
@Duncan +1. i was thinking the same thing
- Trent Olson
Integrated identi.ca via RSS feed before. OK, now it's there but it's not that big deal to me.
- Ansgar Wollnik
Thanks for the identi.ca support ... Excellent work !
- Christian Farley
AWESOME!! Ok, I might be using Identi.ca again!!! Yippee! Thanks FF team!!
- Susan Beebe
Why are the updates called Dents, I'll Dent you later :S
- Joe Dawson
i love "status-blogging", but i still think that it destroys the flow of my friendfeed - i also blocked every twitter update from everyone here at ff...
- Dieter Schwarz
Yay, more services to add to my profile! ;P
- Aaron Myers
Is this not the stupidest thing you've ever seen. How fucking stupid do you have to be to say that a Black Hole is racist. I promise you those dopes never even heard the term before that minute. These guys are involved in Gov't. for chrissakes.
- loren feldman
Lookout. Next thing you know the phrase "White Christmas" will be deemed to be biased and offensive because it doesn't include other colors.
- Rob Safuto
Great line Rob. Yeah let's picket science.
- loren feldman
I'm afraid the creationist fanatics already have that angle covered.
- Donna Mugavero
To keep your "accounts in the black" is a positive use of the term. Guess the dude is overdrawn.
- William, CPU Media
This is just sad. This is our country. We are doomed.
- loren feldman
Stupidity, nay, idiocy, is colorblind.
- Frank Roche
I completely agree that it's a racist term. The whole language is racist. It's intrinsic in the language, so anyone who has a problem with it should learn speak (and use on a daily basis) another language that is less racist. </sarcasm>
- Juan Aguilar
from twhirl
William - LOL, Im just so blown away by this.
- loren feldman
Its shit like this that is really going to hurt Obama's chances.
- loren feldman
I told my pal the Bad Astronomer that he's going to have to find new terminology.
- Donna Mugavero
in related news, my friend said I looked white as a ghost today--racist!
- Jason Calacanis
This is crazy. What are we going to call all those suck ups in the world now?
- Melissa dela Merced
from twhirl
So these people actually run an entire city...?! WAUW. Danish local politics is so boring compared to this. We have waiting lists in the hospitals, old people that don't get their homes cleaned weekly anymore and schools in poor conditions. Thank God we don't have these problems...
- Dennis Bjørn Petersen
from twhirl
“Its shit like this that is really going to hurt Obama's chances.” … why?
- Tsega Dinka
Give me a #$^ break!! This PC crap has gone way overboard! It's getting so that you can't say anything anymore without someone getting offended. This is an excellent example of someone being hyper sensitive to a very commonly used term that has absolutely no racial meaning.
- Jeff P. Henderson
I have black shoes on and white socks...so..err..what happens now?
- Mo Kargas
My loudspeakers at home are black and my iPod earbuds are white... Oh, my, does this mean I can only listen to Hip Hop at home?
- Henk de Kruyff
from twhirl
Geez, this is more ridiculous that Chinese deleting stories about famous ancient generals, simply because they fight races that are now part of the Chinese "minorities"...
- Felix Wong
@Frederick. No flickr doesn't have private favorites. If someone wanted to privately fave though they could create a second account and use that one privately. B Adventures is an interesting concept, a different twist on the photo a day sort of thing. I admire the commitment and endurance to a project and art like that. I thought she'd do it for a few days and then stop, but she's been at it for a while now.
- Thomas Hawk
This woman spends a lot of time self-absorbed in the toilet.
- TranceMist
I followed her for a while, but after about 100 bathroom shots, it lost its luster.
- jerry
Whenever I think of plurk, I think of a fish jumping out of its bowl onto concrete...strange.
- Jeevan Padiyar
from Alert Thingy
My verdict which apparently is so very important - plurk will do more for twitter than anything else recently and will remind us ingratiates why we loved it in the first place.

I can't get their stupid timeline to show up in firefox on my mac (though it works on safari & firefox on my windows laptop). Not worth using safari just for that. :-/
- Bob
you know, I agreed with you until I used the mobile site on the browser on my treo tonight - then I was blown away... fabulous for conversations - blows FF & Twitter out of the water in that aspect. Seriously - I was kind of surprised.
- Lucretia Pruitt
@lucretia is right. i use http://plurk.com/m in the sidebar. also check the group feature.
- kosmar
Plurk will probably end up being the MySpace of micro-blogging services - and that is not a bad place to be. Great implementation IMHO.
- Aviv
Wow, Neopets? Been ages since I've thought about it... Comparing Plurk to it never occurred to me.
- Voyagerfan5761
its just who you follow. you wont see the myspacey customized or teeny user part of it, when you dont add them. also ist not likely to browse on anywhere else than your own customized page.
- kosmar
Was not impressed with Plurk at all. I must agree it was to weird for everyday use. Good luck Plurk.
- Admiral70
I resemble that remark! Think I'll err on the Tamagotchi side, though ...
- Ashton
I had to go back a few times before liking it a nice twhirl-like client would be good though
- Sebbe D'Hose
It's hard to say. It might get a different Twitter-sized audience. The audience isn't us, that's for sure. And they do need to take a few barriers to use down though in order to get really viral. The lack of an API is also a major issue.
- Dion Hinchcliffe
from twhirl
at least you can conjugate plurk like a regular verb. with twitter i usually felt stupid trying to come up with a verb form ("he, uh, twittered") and there was the whole "twitter/tweet" thing for the noun. whereas a plurk is a plurk is a plurk.
- Karim
That's right, considering all the silly names we've been seeing in the past few years, Plurk is a brilliant pick and I think it'll be a key contributor to its [potential] success in becoming the MySpace of micro-blogging services, as well as attracting its intended audience (yes, all those 14 year olds currently populating the service).
- Aviv
Robert, at the end of the day, 14 year old Plurkers simply don't have the same expectations as Twitter super-users and tech geek early-adopters. If Plurk goes down for 30 minutes, they'll happily turn on their Tivo and try again after a Hannah Montana fix.
- Aviv
There's got to be a better critique of new things than 'Not as simple as Twitter"

from twhirl
this comment will show both on friendfeed and on twitter - unless you see it frist on twitter, in which case it will also be on friendfeed
- martin english
I comment here because I don't get abused for answering Tweets here.
- Robert Scoble
I also comment here because the answers are threaded. I also comment here because I can permalink to a cluster of comments about a single Tweet. I also comment here because people can "hide" this conversation if they don't like it.
- Robert Scoble
oh dude, I see this being a blog post by morning! :)
- Paula Hawk
I didn't know you could comment on friendfeed.
- Jim Vrckovski
FriendFeed works, Twitter is down all the time. Twitter is a platform, FriendFeed utilizes this platform - for me, in the most useful way I've seen so far. (It's web-based, it allows conversations.)
- sebmos
I don't put most things on both FriendFeed and Twitter. Why? I keep getting told I'm too noisy on Twitter so I'm using FriendFeed to reduce my noise. In fact, I've just told everyone to come over here instead of continuing this conversation on Twitter. Conversations aren't really good on Twitter. What is? Answering the question "what are you doing?"
- Robert Scoble
Agreed with Robert. I really like the parallel nature of the Twitter / Friendfeed symbiosis.
- Soulhuntre
This definitely looks like it's going to get viral!
- Vinodh Nandakumar
Twitter need to make some sort of threaded comments system.
- Richard Cunningham
I've thought of a better way to handle replies. Msaleem's original message is number 812534216, so to reply to reply @msaleem:812534216 which would map onto http://twitter.com/msaleem... which should also be backwards compatible. Then clients could track the replies in a thread
- Richard Cunningham
@ Richard Cunningham My first impulsive thought is : Threads would destroy twitter
- Kamath (नमः)
because it is another conversation thread that is easier to follow than on twitter and connect to other like minded people.
- Rodney Rumford
I would use this more if Twhirl would just give me a sound stating someone replied to me. Also, threads are only one level on FF. Twhirl could technically do the same thing with Twitter - why not?
- Jesse Stay
from twhirl
Jaiku already has multi-level threaded comments. It's Google's fault that people aren't using it.
- Morton Fox
Also, Quotably allows you to thread your replies to any tweet you want.
- Morton Fox
You brought this on yourself, you know....
- GerryBot
Twitter is not intended to keep conversations. Let's try to keep what it was born to and then, if the tweet is interesting enough let's move the rest to FF.
- Hernan Garcia
I think the biggest poblem is when people are adding comments that add nothing to the situation at all. Or when they are just rambling on and on about the same subject or make REALLY long sentences that clearly show that English is not their main language and that get lost in constructions that are hard to understand and you can clearly see that the commenter did not even take the time to read his own comment to see that it lacks proper structure and grammar. But it's like it's with cliffhangers, they are
- Ruud van Wijngaarden
So sick of ppl telling me where to leave my comments. I'm sorry, but I'll comment anywhere I damn well please. Period. Get over it.
- Shey, Jamaican of FF
I agree with Shey. Recently, a friend of mine deleted his FriendFeed account specifically to stop me from replying to his stuff from here.
- Akiva Moskovitz
See the 'choice' as a plus. It just takes a few seconds to come over here and look?
- Charlie Anzman
Because we can't comment on them within twitter. I like the whole idea of comments. I wish I would recieve more comments on my friendfeed!
- Cade Brown
When someone comments on Friendfeed (in lieu of Twitter), it should be a form of a compliment, showing that you have a higher level of exposure.
- Zak K.
