Well put, Roue. I teach tech to adults. The 40-and-up crowd get this *instantly*. They don't want to control the conversation. It's the Madison Avenue types who push back on conversation control. - Brent Newhall

She makes a point. From a business point of view, we barely have weekends (I just checked office email on a holiday...), But from a mental health point of view, we need blocks of time to "reset". There's a reason labor leaders of the past fought so hard for shorter weeks. - Sprague D
still not sure how the week wasn't split into 4 days for the work week and 3 days for the weekend, how come 5 and 2? Isn't going halfway human nature? - Lou Paglia
@Lou, I'm with you -- I find 4 long days and 3 off is close to perfect. - Sprague D
Everyone needs down time. Unfortunate many individuals and most major corporations no longer recognize it. Even workaholics needs a break from time to time. - Charlie Anzman
Four long days then a three day weekend sounds good for those who want it, but I think that this idea risks putting us all in a position where workers who want to take their two days off back-to-back are frowned upon. In my experience, single days off spread throughout the week are useless- a single day off is enough time to either unwind or get your non-work related chores done, but not both. - Mike
yes. I need them. but think corps stick with 5-2 because schools do also. - Rob Williams
My life's goal is to live 6 Saturdays and a Sunday, and to bring as many people as possible along with me. - Craig Eddy
Also, I know my productivity drops as the workday continues, and by the 7th hour or so, I'm ready to go home. How productive would most people be during the last hour of a 10-hour day? - Brent Newhall
Absolutely. I need those days to catch up on everything non-work related I didn't have a chance to do during the week. I would much rather have 5 days of hard work than lightly spread work around over 7 days. - Jason Kaneshiro
Ummm... In a word, yes. - Phil Gomes
That is a pretty big assumption that most people work in isolation. People work too much as it is, letting them control when they are off especially when it might not overlap their co-workers will only make things worse. - Scott Watermasysk via NoiseRiver
this is a good point, I'm totally fine with the 5 day week, but why M-F? I kind of like the 'flex-time' the us fed employees where you can get an extra day off every other week, but it is still confined to the M-F work week - nick carrasco
To me it's not about how much time, but how efficient you are with your time. Too many people working longer, not smarter. People need time away to recharge and bring life experience to work interactions. Do we need weekends? Yes. But we need more than that ... 60-80 hour work weeks simply don't pan out IMO. - AJ Kohn

When NASA began the launch of astronauts into space, they found out that the pens wouldn't work at zero gravity (ink won't flow down to the writing surface). To solve this problem, it took them one decade and $12 million. They developed a pen that worked at zero gravity, upside down, underwater, in practically any surface including crystal and in a temperature range from below freezing to over 300 degrees C. And what did the Russians do....?? They used a pencil. !! - Peter Dawson
The company received a complaint that a consumer had bought a soapbox that was empty. Immediately the authorities isolated the problem to the assembly line, which transported all the packaged boxes of soap to the delivery department.Post-haste, the engineers worked hard to devise an X-ray machine with high-resolution monitors manned by two people to watch all the soapboxes that passed through the line to make sure they were not empty. [...contine below] - Peter Dawson
..... when a rank-and-file employ.e in a small company was posed with the same problem, He bought a strong industrial electric fan and pointed it at the assembly line. He switched the fan on, and as each soapbox passed the fan, it simply blew the empty boxes out of the line. - Peter Dawson
While we certainly sometimes over-analyze problems, I'm afraid Snopes has debunked the NASA space pen story: http://www.snopes.com/business... - Brent Newhall
Brent, thanks for de-bunking da story. Its always good to know .. but the above post makes for some story telling to the IT crew who always complicate the solution :)- - Peter Dawson

email faces increasing competition. Chat, text messages, Twitter, social networks and even lifestreaming tools are chipping away at email usage. - Todd Mundt
And please don't forget face-to-face interaction. Also a big contender. 6.7 billion users world-wide! - benedikt
email is pretty much dead since ages, but everybody keeps using it, mostly to send ads about thingy enlarging products or seeking help for transfering biiig chunks of imaginary money from the philipines to switzerland. heck my 22 years old brother doesn't even know how to send mails with attachments, his primary communication channel is this cell phone. mine are mail, irc, jabber, twitter, friendfeed ... but, I am pretty much alone in this regard throughout almost all the people I know real life wise. So I - Michael Klier
think email will be around for quite some time from now on. (btw the above comment hit the friendfeed "max. allowed characters" mark 8) it's 512 nice number) - Michael Klier
@Michael that's been my experience. I have a set of friends who see IM as a good email replacement, another small group who use twitter and ff that way, but most people I know want to use email - and most want to use it for stuff that it can't do well at all, like group editing of documents. - Todd Mundt
I think it's like everything else. Some folks I know communicate almost entirely through Facebook. Some through IM. Some through email. It's becoming a robust ecology. - Brent Newhall

I would've said Short Circuit *before* I saw the movie - after I have to go with Idiocracy - b/c Wall-e wasn't an "accidentally self-aware" robot to me. And of course, no Ally Sheedy. - Lucretia Pruitt
I have no desire to see the movie because it looks like too much of a Short Circuit rip-off. - pcnerd37
thanks Alvin! - Jason Calacanis
Number five is alive! - Dave Zatz
If it was a rip-off, it was done right. It's better than idiocracy or short circuit. - Jeremy Brooks
Jeremy Brooks: very true... it was a rip off done right... is that less wrong? - Jason Calacanis
Why is it wrong, Jason? - George Sudarkoff
I don't know that it's wrong, but I have to say it feels kind of wrong when the plot is sooooooo close in the case of idiocracy. If you see the two films you'll understand what I'm talking about... both are good/great films. - Jason Calacanis
I thought the idea was ripped off wallace and gromit a grand day out (the robot that was all alone and cleaned up the moon) - Darren Stuart
great movie, wrong sentiment... - tommy payne via Alert Thingy
short circuit is just ET with a robot! wait what? - paulm
so Wall-E copied Short Circuit which copied ET?!?!?! :-) - Jason Calacanis
Not sure that it really rips off "Idiocracy" at all. I mean, the people of the future aren't STUPID, per se...Similar conceptions of the future, but very different perspectives and stories. I'll grant that WALL-E himself resembles Johnny 5, though. - Lon Harris via twhirl
Jason, this link already appeared on FF when you dugg it. It gets kind of annoying to see all your links in duplicate or triplicate. - Richard Klein
Johnny 5 Is Alive! - silpol
Pixar also ripped off "Doc Hollywood" to make "Cars". Google that. - Hashim Warren
I haven't seen Wall-E yet, but overheard a couple of coworkers discussing it and thought to myself "that sounds sort of like Idocracy with robot-like creatures instead of people". - Ken Pruett
It *is* possible to make one movie that is similar to another movie, without "ripping it off." Wall-E ripped off Idiocracy and Short Circuit in the same way that The Matrix ripped off a bunch of SF novels and Raiders of the Lost Ark ripped off the old Republic adventure serials. - Brent Newhall
Hmmm... maybe "Wall-E" is derived from "Short Circuit" and "Idiocracy." But "Idiocracy" is derived from a 50-year-old story called "The Marching Morons," by C.M. Kornbluth and Fredrik Pohl (iirc). Similar premise, much darker ending than "Idiocracy." - Mitch Wagner

Living in Modesto, it amazed me how often I would drive by a Starbucks on the way to the office and see a line of SUVs in the drive thru waiting for their coffee. I could park, walk in, get a 1.25 coffee, walk out, get in the car and leave and most of those vehicles would still be in the que. - Jason Shultz via twhirl
This must mean more people are drinking Tim Hortons - Jeff Hoard via twhirl
Kinda surprised I'm the first to reference the Onion article on Starbucks closing all its stores and starting the sinister "Phase Two": http://www.theonion.com/conten... - Brent Newhall
Mark Forman - no kidding! I've got a Mr Coffee on the counter that if I keep clean, really makes a great pot of coffee: got the formula tweeked perfect and its much better than that stuff at Starbucks. That and a nice stainless thermos I got for a safety award 6 or 7 yrs ago at work, and that $4/cup folks spend at Starbucks will pay for my whole week of a full thermos (that thermos is 3 full mugs) plus a mug in the other hand to get down the road to work. - RapidEye
Saying Starbucks closing 600 stores has to do with the economy might not be so true. Starbucks has massively over saturated...everything! Not to mention that they sell their coffee for regular coffee makers and, people do buy it. I might not go to Starbucks and pay $5 for a cup of coffee anymore but, I did have four cups of their Breakfast Blend from my own coffee maker today. - Candace Holly
file under could care less since i don't drink Coffee being a robot and all seriously though i really not a robot... LOL - Cecil Sandus
OK, first of all, it is part of a restructuring plan that closes on 600 out of the 7000 stores and 4000 outlets that Starbucks has. Also these 600 stores do not make a profit. Third Starbucks plans to open another 200 next year. So yes it sucks that 14K people will loose jobs, starbucks will have to pay $200M in early termination costs/taxes. But good for them for keeping a lean business. Maybe it will reduce that $5 cup of coffee - Edward

I also suspect that those who build the world's fastest computers have already spent so much money on the hardware that they're more likely to use a free OS. - Brent Newhall
@Brent: Most of these machines are purpose built. The OS choice was made long before the hardware in almost all of them. - Jason Ellis via twhirl
Yeah, the time element is undoubtedly incorrect there. But I still think that, on those computers, the builders focus their spending on the hardware, not the software. - Brent Newhall

My First Patch of 21MG went onto my arm about 1Min ago. My attempt to quit smoking has began. Have smoked for the last 26 yrs, an avg of approx 15-20 Cigg's a day. Some days even more. Every Change begins with small step and today I have taken that first step. I will continue to micro update this post as when I feel like it. I hope my Friend are out here are willing to my screech and give me moral support. So there, wish me luck !! - Peter Dawson
Wishing you luck. Hoping you quit. - Leatrice Ellzy
Good luck! - Patricia Hanrahan

I found giving up smoking easy, once I had my daughter I saw all these commercials on television about children losing their parents and that did it for me!! - Joe Dawson
You gonna need something more than luck, but I wish you well in this. I'm staying on the dark side for now - Dobromir Hadzhiev
Good Luck :) - Yuvi
Peter, I was a nicotine slave for 17 years. I know different things work for different folks, but, I used "Commit" and was completely amazed. Spent a total of $60 on it, over the counter, no Doctors, amazing. No propmises and I don't work for them but its good stuff - Cody Heitschmidt via fftogo
Fantastic decision! Good Luck! - Parth Awasthi
Day1- 30/06 - My first 7hrs of de-tox- the craving is like a big ouch..Tried nicorate gum, but thatmade my tongue feel like sand paper. 1 hrs later, I caved in and smoked 1/2 a cigg an then butted. Still not had lunch, wondering if I will reach for a cigg once thats done !! - Anyway, so far I am happy, normally by this time of day, I would have had at least 4-6 !! - Peter Dawson
Stay strong. It is a smart decison. :) - Mathew A. Koeneker
Keep working at it! I hear its one of the hardest things to kick period. I read about pfizers new drug Chantix... I haven't heard of anyone using it though. Does anyone know how successful it is? - Frankie Warren
Good luck- it is very hard but it *can* be done. Hang in there! (And think of the good you are doing for your body and your wallet.) - Abby Martin
@Abby, I hear you on the wallet - its like pinching hard .. $450/month on cigg alone ..kinda crazy .. as for the health aspect, even though I think I am fit, I can become more fitter when I cut smoking. BTW, thanks ALL the commentors for support - Peter Dawson
any1 has suggestion for chewin something ? I tried chewing gum, nictorate gum and am lost and I dont have a sweet tooth !! - Peter Dawson
Ok the day is nearly over.. the hardest part of killinn the evening will start soon. So far its been ONLY 2 cigg's ... - Peter Dawson
Zyban and Nicorette worked well for me back in Jan. 2001, plus an exercise routine as well. I hear Chantix is even more effective than Zyban, but some users have reported aberrant behaviour. Stay strong and remind yourself that it's pure poison everytime you feel the need. Don't worry about the weight loss. Think about how much better life will become the longer you stay off the nicotine. - Siddharth Deb
Had my first beer for the evening - managed NOT to smoke !! So far doing well !! - Peter Dawson
If you can drink without smoking, you are doing very well. That's a natural combo. So well done you. - Abby Martin
Good luck. Can be done if you really want to. Been off of nicotine for almost 7 years. - Mark Forman
Good luck man! - Shey
avoid the grog, it's way too hard to drink without smoking, at least for the first couple of months - Duncan Riley
G'luck! I quit Apr 23 :) Also avoid the morning breakfast hangout where the old guys gather to bullshit, drink coffee, and smoke... bad place, bad. - Michael W. May via twhirl
d2 - 0701 Whoever said that sleeping with the patch is k ? 4 me it was a very bad bad nite. Weird Dreams and all that not so nice stuff. Challenge for the day, break the coffee and smoke habit. So its coffee ONLY and then a shower to get Dose#2 .. lets see how today goes ..All in all- just about 5 cigg yesterday. Thats like a 75% reduction rate for day1. need to keep it this way or less for a week and then I think wk1 will pan out well ! - Peter Dawson
@Duncan, yeah I caved during the evening beers and after supper. So need to focused more on alternatives for the evening. a beer or two a in the evenings has been a routine for me. - Peter Dawson
Another challenge is the BBQ session that I'l be going to. Today is Canada Day and spending the whole afternoon outside. with family friends. Freaky as it sounds.. I am wishing for rain today.. so that I run back indoors. Yes, no smoking in the home rule exists at friends place (his better half will kick the snort out of any1 who dares spark up !) , so that may help too (the rain !!) .. - Peter Dawson
Best of luck! Quitting any addiction isn't easy. - Brent Newhall
does not need to be tough..read Alan Carr...and enjoy you just took a great decision - PF Thaler
Today seemed to be a bad day !! I think I failed- began taking a drag of a cigg and returning it..evenutally by later afternoon, was smoking a full cigg. In short, I did about 5-6 , yeah need to keep away from the beers too hile trying to quit.. me bad.. - Peter Dawson
You're NOT bad. This is hard. You're trying. Hang in there. - Abby Martin
Broke the Morning habbit of coffee and cigg. I just got up, splashed water on my face and then took a brisk walk around the block.. and then took another walk to get a Timmies. So the morning ritual of making coffee /reaching for cigg has been broken. Now, I hope tis stays broken ..hahahah :)- - Peter Dawson
Words of advice on Food intake :- "Eat like a KING for b/Fast, like a PRINCE for Lunch and like a PAUPER for supper" - eh ? easier said then done. I find that I every 1/2 hr stuffing myself with muncies !! Methinks, .zats not a good habit - Peter Dawson
No, this is normal when you quit smoking- you're compensating for the lost nicotine and your appetite is on the rise as it leaves your system. But hang in there! - Abby Martin
Rule#1 : Don't reach for Cigg +Coffee at wake up time , is intact !! . Went out for a brisk walk and did 3 sets of pushups , 10,5, 8 :)- So now , having Coffee and checking Emails ! - Peter Dawson
Dreams are getting wierdier.. I had dream that I was in prison and the inmates were crazy.. yeah something like "one flew over the cuckoo's nest" kinda thingy.. Got up at preceisly 2:49AM .. Tonight, I'll remove the patch before sleeping. Secondly, its Friday an this means social drinking too.. and partying someplace. Got to stick at home , is what I say 4 tonight - Peter Dawson
Sat evening 07/05 - 3 beers, 3 rum& coke + 3 ciggs ONLY. I took a cigg after dinner and only 2 during the course of my grog. me hinks, that I di just A-ok !! JUST 2 ciggs between 6 rounds of drinks and in 4 hrs of hanging out, seems 2 me its an accomplishment. Why ? normally by this time I would done at least about 1/2 pack.. easily about 10-12 ciggs in a session like this !! btw ..Old country for old men on a 52" HDTV screen is just awesome !! ... - Peter Dawson

I personally have a really hard time sitting through online video/audio (even 1 minute feels long). I'd read the summaries. - Hutch Carpenter
I have podcasts on in the background so there is plenty of time to read good summaries (or anything else for that matter) ;-) - Alexander van Elsas
Yeah a written summary would help a ton if the author has the time and if the podcast is long. If it's not that long, then it's not really necessary. - Corvida
I don't like videos at art galleries either. I like videos at "short film" conferences, but when I read I'm into reading and multi-tasking. Videos are more single-task. Agree; tell me though, does Pownce = Twitter + FriendFeed [or vice-versa] or am I just being thick? Twhirl posts to Pownce for me as well, but taking Rafe Needleman's advice and not tracking multiple communities. FF good for posts too long for Twitter - Justin Guy Souter via twhirl
FriendFeed > Twitter for me. I feel more value when I post here first. - (steve isaacs)
agree, and, in between Twitter and Friendfeed , many other indispensible things are included. - Nikos Anagnostou
Agree! - Marc Dierens
twitter for messaging, friendfeed for aggregation - Tyler
Agree 100% - Mike Doeff
What Mike said. AND is IMPT. - Brian Daniel Eisenberg
I agree. I still just wish that twitter is more stable. - Alan Le
agree!! - edythe
I definitely agree. FriendFeed is not a Twitter replacement. - Jake (aka Jawee) via twhirl
agree for now, but not forever... - Jeremy Toeman
well I would have to agree as I do use both.. it seems obvious they are different things. - Karl via twhirl
Both - but grudgingly. Honestly? The only reason I go to FF is because some of my Twitterpals migrated here and won't come back. Twitter is my main gal - FF is my Friday night stand-in. If I could do away with FF I would. - Lucretia Pruitt
Twitter is too myopic to last much longer. Our online lives are a lot more complicated than 140 characters. - David Weiner
How much time to we all have?? There are use cases for both twitter and friend feed. Some people WILL choose one or the other. There are functional aspects that i like about both. For me it is both. - Rodney Rumford
Its neither - it's what fits your structure and how you want to connect. If you want actual conversations and build on relationpships, IMO, Plurk is good at that. FF seems too cluttered but aggregates a lot information together. Twitter is still good for me and is a great broadcast tool, some communication, and a lot of industry heads that you can learn from. - Sonny Gill
What the heck, throw in Plurk and you got a deal. - Rick Wolff
It's becoming less and less so. I'd much rather have one service I can do it all on and FriendFeed satisfies that much better. Twitter still has things FF doesn't though so for what FF doesn't satisfy, I will continue to use Twitter for. - Jesse Stay via twhirl
Totally agree. - karen2
I suppose I could go with the AND if FF offered a pure stream like twitter. I really don't like the threaded conversation presentation ... but maybe that's because I mostly use twirl? - Clint
Agree *completely*! - Kasey Sistrunk Anderson
You're almost right. I get what you're getting at. But the two are different and will grow separate paths with some common features. - phil baumann
phil, if they do grow in separate paths, that's great! I'll continue using both! However, I will not continue to use both for the same reasons. I'm removing the duplicate effort lately and consolodating what I can over to FriendFeed, leaving the remaining effort to Twitter. - Jesse Stay via twhirl
My other concern is that Twitter just doesn't have the expertise up high to make it a successful service. You will see the FF founders frequently engaged in conversations about FF on their service. I have yet to see a single Twitter founder engage in any of the critiques or compliments about their service on Twitter. - Jesse Stay via twhirl
FF ideal for social discovery as long as folks hooking up enough of their services. I like the "noise" of FF. - Stephen Francoeur
...and Plurk, and Facebook, and Pownce, and Jaiku, and more to come. Twitter for its simplicity and all the add-on apps and all the others for conversations or smaller groups with specific interests. - Brenda Young
agree! - Clay Newton
Agree! To me, it's "FriendTweed" - David Cook
Just for you Jeremiah (Just a rough draft) http://tinyurl.com/55eof3 - David Cook
currently it's only Friendfeed cause twitter has lowered the allowed API
