Google Lets You Change the World with MapMaker - http://mashable.com/2008...
"Google has announced a new feature of Google Maps called MapMaker, which allows anyone with a Google account (therefore, everyone) to edit Google Maps Google Maps . We’re not talking editing your or your friends’ version; we’re talking about the real thing. You can now edit and moderate roads, lakes, parks, POIs, cities and other local features as you please." Finally this launched! Very excited. - Bret Taylor from Bookmarklet
Very interesting but if I'm reading right doesn't apply to US locations :( - AJ Kohn
Wikipedia for Maps ;) - AJ Batac
Interesting feature - the aerial photography on Google Maps is often a patchwork of tiles stitched together (often containing data from a few years fly bys) - useful that you can edit the map. Do we know why there are restrictions on where in the world you can edit the layers? - David W
"Furthermore, only certain regions of the world are editable: Cyprus, Iceland, Pakistan, Vietnam and the Caribbean nations of: Antigua & Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Grenada, Jamaica, Netherlands Antilles, St. Kitts & Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, and Trinidad & Tobago." - Jim Norris
"On the other hand, this move raises an important question: do you trust a community-built map? In some cases, I do, but for certain situations I’d like to have a slightly more official map as backup." At least in the U.S. most street maps are made by private companies and only loosely based on any official data. What's a better word to describe non-community-built products than "official" — audited? Sponsored? - Jim Norris
I like this. My Garmin GPS maps always have mistakes. - Mitchell Tsai
I'm going to laugh if the entire map of Iceland is covered in [citation needed] labels - but on a serious note, is Google Maps going to have guidelines for how maps can be changed and if sourcing is necessary? One of the reasons Wikipedia works is because there are clear guidelines for what can and cannot be added, and there are people running around enforcing those guidelines. (theoretically) Yet, very cool. - Erin
Does that mean I can edit roads to fix the Sydney traffic problem? - Craig Thomler
Too bad I've been away from Jamaica too long to help out. Will be back there next year so I'll try to remember to add some roads in :) - Shey
