You're right. I was confused. I already had the same app installed, just a previous version. What confused me was that the app was simply called Brightkite, which led me to believe it was an official app. :S

Google Gears http://gears.google.com/ can do it too in other browsers. But until the majority of phones support it, I don't think these location-based social networks will get any real traction.
