So where is the blog post about what is wrong with twitter the company? Whats going on over there? Why has no writtern something about this? I dont mean the twitout either.
People have talked about it. The former architect was on Gillmor Gang on Friday and we talked about it at length. The problems they are trying to solve are hard and it was started as a hobby. Bad architectural decisions were made and it got more popular than they ever dreamed about so now they are trying to really trying to get ahead of the problem and aren't yet successful. - Robert Scoble
I'd totally forgive them if they shut down for a few days and fixed everything that is wrong. It would give us a chance to see if FriendFeed can fully replace Twitter (as some would have you believe) or if we all die without it. - Shawn Farner
Shawn, I totally agree. - Shey
Twitter? What's that? You mean that site from back in the olden days before FriendFeed? - Thomas Hawk
It's ironic that the two social networks that I got hooked on in 2007 - Twitter and Second Life - are both undergoing similar problems with platform stability. Hope Twitter has better fortune than SL did. - Mitch Wagner
What is there to write about? It's an app with bad architecture kludged together with bubble gum and bobby pins. I've written about it at least three times. If it was me running the show there, I'd have started parallel development to start from scratch, then migrated everyone over. At this point, it would take more than a few days to fix it and I don't think they are interested in rebuilding it. - Cyndy
5 Things Twitter Shouldn't Be Doing, how could you miss my post Brit! I'm disappointed! http://jerseysuburbia.com/2008... - Andrew Dobrow
@andrew I just added your blog to my snackr feed and googlereader! ;P - Dave Peck
Shawn and Shey: What makes you think these are things that can be fixed in a few days? - Brent Newhall
@Brent I really don't know if it can. Hypothetically, if it could, I'd be all for it - Shey
I don't care how they fix. Just TELL us something. One thing I know from client satisfaction is to inform BEFORE the problem occurs. We Twitterites find out there's a problem with Twitter when it's down. That's my biggest beef, just let us know something. - Bwana
@Bwana, what do we want them to say? They have no idea when it's going to crash, so they can't tell us that ahead of time. Everyone KNOWS there's a huge problem with it, and it's not like they are going to admit their codebase is crap. I think Dion Almaer's comic is on the money. They like the publicity of the crashes. - Cyndy
I'm sorry but I doubt anyone here really knows about the quality of the architecture or the codebase at Twitter. All we know is that it has lots of downtime. They're in a hole and they don't seem to have the manpower or the revenue stream to get themselves out of it in the near future. If building Twitter was as easy as people make it out to be then there'd be dozens of clones. The fact that none of their vocal critics have written an alternative tells us a lot about the difficulty of implementing Twitter. - Adewale Oshineye
@Adewale Actually, we do know about the quality of the architecture and the codebase. Even someone who's never written a line of code can recognize bad architecture when they see it, because it doesn't scale. How often have you seen a 500 error on eBay? On Amazon? Millions of users completing financial transactions, writing reviews, uploading images, adding wishlists, and yet Twitter can't pass messages back and forth. I'd bet more than one person is out there coding a replacement. - Cyndy
