"Years ago there used to be two ironmongers shops in Newmarket. I used to love browsing in them. Then one closed and the last one struggled on and finally closed last year. These were the sort of shops where you could find everything that you needed from dustbins with chimneys for burning garden waste safely to heatproof rope to mend the wood burning stove. Now we go to Homebase to buy exorbitantly overpriced packs of nails and screws. We often can’t find exactly what we want as the stock is designed to appeal to the majority of shoppers not the ones who have the need for something very rare like a replacement rubber seals for old Kilner jars. My friend Margaret in Ashley heard about my bottling frenzy. “Would you like a box of old Kilner jars. They haven’t got seals I’m afraid.” This was fine as in the past I’d spotted two places where I could buy these on the internet. The new Kilner jar metal seals (manufactured by Ravenhead) do not fit the old jars. The old jars need rubber rings....

"On Wednesday I saw a British film “This is England” set among skinheads in the North of England in the early eighties. It is a powerful movie and brought back memories of growing up in Glasgow in the seventies. I spent the bulk of my teens running away from complete strangers who wished to do me harm. I was always very tall for my age and every time I left our housing scheme a large group of smallish kids would materialise from nowhere and ask ‘What team do you support? Even if you guessed right on the team, the follow up would be along the lines of ‘I heard you called me a poof’ or ‘I saw you looking at my bird’ these were dubious allegations but the onus was on me to disprove them, so I’d have to start running. I reckon that the seventies fashions saved my life; because these guys were wearing platforms and huge flairs, I usually got away. The whole decade had a kind of Lord of the Rings quality to it, a sort of undeclared civil war fought with swords. A friend of mine was a junior...

Ok, I got my invite to Ribbit Mobile after being alerted to it from BT yesterday on their RSS Feed. What is Ribbit? Well, its Google Voice for the UK currently. Ive signed up and it quickly took control over my voicemail. People can leave voicemails for me on my normal mobile, and Ribbit will transcribe the messages and send it back to me in an SMS
Simon was kind enough to trial it out and in the above screenshot, it shows he left me a message and it automatically types out what he said in the message. Sure, the transcribing isnt instantaneous and it takes about 5-10mins, but its still decent enough. Ive got 10 invites here to try it all out for free if anyone wants a go to see what its like.
- Giraffes Up In The AIr
Thats pure coincidence that Ribbit.com has liked this. I didnt even know they were on FF!
- Giraffes Up In The AIr
Theres supposebly other features like free sms I can send on, but I havent bothered to figure that out yet. Will do all this tomorrow! Need to go collect that carrot Simon was on about!
- Giraffes Up In The AIr
Dude, can you ping me an invite please? keith @ kleverideas.com. Much appreciated.
- Keith Bennett
Thanks mate. Having a play now. Anything I can do in return? Do you need a Google Wave invite???
- Keith Bennett
Nah, got it here and got 7 invites to give away myself! Just enjoy it! My good deed for the day! I have 7 Ribbit invites left too!

"Are you sick of UK newspapers and (my fellow) politicians beating up on gaming? So am I. The truth is, UK gamers need their own pressure group. I want to help you start one up. I don't know how it should work yet but please register your interest if you agree that gamers need their voice hear in the corridors of power. And if you have any ideas, please post them to the wall."

The 15£ charge is for pay as you go customers only it seems. I read their post in RSS and it was wrong, they have updated the article on the site now. #bastards

So let me get this straight. PAYG customers pay an arm and a leg for their hardware, then have to pay more to unlock it to they can use "their" hardware elsewhere?? All other networks do this for all their phones, but the iPhone, at the sky high price it is, is an exception.
- Roberto Bonini
Yup. Takes the piss to charge them again to use it on another network, when they have paid the same as us, just outright not over 18 months +

Tomorrow, im going to Sainsburys to Pick up Call of Duty MW2 for the PS3. They are selling it for £26 ($43) How much of a bargain is that for a brand new game?! :)
Nice, I'll be grabbing a PC version at some point. As I have an impromptu day off I can start looking for the best prices for a few games I'm after. Just waiting for my money to come through from my last job.
- Kol Tregaskes
Yeah! Its gonna be awesome. Cant wait to go online with it at least, or get the girlfriend to do the multiplayer mission with me! :D
- Giraffes Up In The AIr
Cool. I got the first one cheap on STeam the other day, might try that later.
- Kol Tregaskes
I wandered around the shops in Horsham last Thursday and saw this in Argos for 50-60 quid! LOL. No chance.
- Kol Tregaskes
I think if you spend more than £30 on a game you are spending too much. Either shop around or wait for the price to drop (which can only be a few weeks).
- Kol Tregaskes
Defo, go play it! Its loads of fun! Its a bit crazy the RRP for this is £55. Sainsburys selling it for less than half. Mental. Just shows you the profit margin that GAME makes.
- Giraffes Up In The AIr
You can pick up classics like BioShock for under a tenner atm. Snapped that up as soon as I saw it. Really looking forward to the sequel. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Asda are selling it tomorrow for £32 as confirmed in the papers today. Tesco havent announced anything i dont think.
- Giraffes Up In The AIr
Actually at £26 they'll be making a little loss on the game, so it's a little puzzling but it's there call and I'm not complaining. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
yeah! Sainsburys dont open til 8am though, so will be getting the lad from college, then driving round to it! I dont care if im late for University, ill never be able to get this game that cheap for a few years guaranteed! :)
- Giraffes Up In The AIr
I think most of the supermarkets are selling new top games cheap nowadays. I know ASDA is one who sells them dirty cheap.

After watching most of the game on tele just now, the English team look totally lethargic compared to the other Southern hemisphere teams. They have no pace in attack, absolutely no creativity, nobody challenging the defense. I bet the Wallabies are happy to be playing the Slam after such a bad Tri-nats. It makes them look good, lol.
- Will Higgins™
I also thought it was funny that a bbc news article said Wilkonson was AMAZING. Kicking 9 points is amazing? I suppose if you're used to English rugby maybe. Hey England, there's this guy named Dan Carter, recently returned too. He laughs at your 9 points. Especially in an international game so focused on kicking.
