I'll probably not play it more than once. (Which, incidentally, why alternate endings bug me. I'll only ever see one and have to YouTube the rest) - [self setNick:@"willia4"]
It's a very rare RPG that can hold my interest through multiple replays and for it to be replayable, it has to be fairly short (finish in 20 hours). Mass Effect is a perfect example of an RPG that I replayed a lot. Almost finished it 4 times to get max achievements on 360. Most RPGs though, to do everything take about 75-100 hours. By that time, I'm just done with it and ready to move on to something else. - AlexScoble(Robert'sBro)
Replayability is cool. If it fits the story, multiple endings can be awesome. I think general replayability should be a bonus and the player should be able to get stuff done from one play-through. - Arlan Koizumi

I like the in media res style. (Yes, I'm using one of the three Latin phrases I know for no good reason.) - [self setNick:@"willia4"]
Hrmm... I don't really have any preferences. Depends on the game, I guess. - Arlan Koizumi
Tossed in! Discovering whats going on is half the fun! - Geoff Schultz
I prefer my exposition Half Life (1 and 2) style. I know it's not an RPG, but I really love the idea of telling a story without telling the story. So I guess my vote would be for no explicit exposition at all. - Tad - just Tad
I like a little bit of both. I play an RPG for the story to unfold but, I also like to discover things at the same time. I like it best when I get a little bit of it up front and have to discover the rest. - Candace Holly
No explicit preference. (I'm a big fan of the Breath of Fire 3 exposition, fwiw.) - Tom Morris

Can you give some examples? - Lindsey Smith
Examples: Most FFs used a zoomed out, alternate style map. FF6 went to mode7 and FF7 went to real time 3d instead of pre-rendered. Secret of Mana didn't use a world map for walking, only for flying. FF10 did away with a world map for travel altogether and presented you with a map screen with mere pinpoints to land on. - Brooks Bishop
I like the world map to be fairly panned out to kind of allow you to embrace the scope of your journey. I dont necessarily care if it is prerendered or 3d real time rendering. Just something that gives perspective. - Geoff Schultz
This is kind of a strange conceptual question. I supposed you could break it down to: Is a world map strictly necessary? You can have an external walk/flight map, or you can just use normal screens for walking with no outer map. How you feel about either method? - Brooks Bishop
I don't like world maps. Ideally, it'd be a FF10 style system with Indiana Jones style red-lines-on-the-map-representing-travel (instead of the more 3Dish way FF10 did it). ;) - [self setNick:@"willia4"]
I likes me a world map where it has Fog of War/Discovery aspect to it. Blank from the start, but as you explore places, it'll fill out. Much like interior maps and such on games. Keeps the wonderment of discovering the world but also provides an easy to use reference to get back to places you've already been. - Arlan Koizumi
@Arlan Ah yes, fog of war. I totally forgot about that, I usually associate it with RTSs. The FF4 port for DS introduced a fog of war to its maps, and rewarded you with bonus items for completing dungeon area map discoveries. Quite a novel mechanic. I don't have the airship yet, not sure if you get anything for completing the world map. - Brooks Bishop

I like this, and it's something I could see myself using. Unfortunately, the fact it would have to be programmed for and is a costly 3rd party peripheral means that most developers won't touch it, reducing its usefulness. - Brooks Bishop via Bookmarklet

One is just fine with me with 2 through 6 support characters. The Mass Effect or Oblivion style of play is just great if you ask me. Play one character only but control a small army. - AlexScoble(Robert'sBro)
I like the secret of mana and FF12 style of things, one main character with the ability to switch between all available party members at need - shawn
However many the story requires I suppose. 6 or so I guess. No more then 3 or 4 at a time though. (assuming it is turn based gameplay) - Geoff Schultz
I like 1-4 "main" playable characters, then at least 4-8 more supporting characters with specific stories/side-quests. Too many more than that and it can get a bit difficult to choose your party as you move through the game. Too much smaller, and the game might be too simple. - Jennifer Dittrich
Depending on story and classes, up to 8 max is my preference. Of course, you could get nuts like the Suikoden series. :) - Arlan Koizumi
I loved that Chrono Cross had sooooo many. Also like a variety of different kinds of girls. - Lindsey Smith
Yeah, I don't like it when you have to switch characters as part of story progression ala Lost Odyssey. Show that stuff in a cut scene. And Mass Effect was by no means a simple RPG even though you always play as the main character with only 2 sidekicks. Then again you have 6 sidekicks to choose from. - AlexScoble(Robert'sBro)
I like a very large cast. But I also think it's important for every playable character to be someone you can feel attached to on some level. Chrono Cross' large cast was interesting, but most were just thrown in to increase the character count or lost their story from all the cuts. I think there should be as many characters as can be supported by back story and plot. - Brooks Bishop
I think the cast on Chrono Cross made it more interesting for subsequent playthroughs. - Lindsey Smith
Console and RPG... those two do not, have never, belonged together ;) - Michael W. May (Joffi) via twhirl
+1 Lindsey - I had forgotten Chrono Cross' endless cast. For that game I did really love all of the different variations :) - Jennifer Dittrich
