Console RPG question of the day: Do twitch mechanics have a place in menu driven RPGS?
For more on my CRPG QotD please see my blog: http://www.wastedbrilliance.com/2008... - Brooks Bishop
For example, FF8 let you hit the R trigger when swinging the gunblade for more damage. Super Mario RPG let you twitch on nearly every attack (and abused the mechanic with that ridiculous jump attack). Penny-Arcade's Precipice used twitch mini-games for every special attack. - Brooks Bishop
Before Crisis Core, I'd say categorically no, but I could deal with something like what CC does, where it feels like it's twitch, but it really is just regular ATB. I want to be able to think tactically in a CRPG: the rest of the game is deliberate, so should the battles be. - Mark Trapp
Yes, just don't make it an achievement on the 360 (see Lost Odyssey) - Alex Scoble
It really depends on the RPG . . . I loved it in the Super Marios RPG but in most others its just . . . *yawn* - Lindsey is Fierce!
Seems like it would create a bit more engaging experience but possibly somewhat tiring. I really don't have enough experience with the mechanic to discern weather it is something id like or not. - Geoff Schultz
I don't like to see twitch in the main part of the RPG as a rule, but I don't mind it as a part of mini-games or side-quests. As an exception, the occasional really-super-awesome attack that is twitchy can be pretty cool if executed correctly. - Jennifer Dittrich
I'm not too big of a fan of twitch stuff in RPGs. I prefer more to strategize and plan, and work around the random number generator by properly applying stat bonuses. A little bit in moderation, slight extra effort for a little reward works for me though. I prefer to be rewarded for effort, rather than punished for lack of it. - Brooks Bishop
FFX implemented a pretty nifty "twitch" aspect to the limit breaks. I didn't mind those. - Arlan Koizumi
Man, I haven't played a menu driven RPG in ages. The Tales series has spoiled me. :) - Nathaniel Payne
The main reason I tend to play RPGs is because my reflexes are too slow for other games. Twitch stuff in RPGs therefore bugs me as it just makes it harder without adding any fun. - James (@willia4)
