Obrigada, anónimo/a. http://jonasnuts.com/464118...
À pergunta "o... more... - Bruno Miguel from email

“World’s First Ubuntu Tablet” Starts Taking Pre-Orders – But Is It Legit? http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2013...
An Australian website is taking pre-orders for an Ubuntu tablet – but is it legit? I was pointed to the website of the ‘intermatrix u7′ on Google+. It bills itself as ‘the world’s first Ubuntu Tablet‘. But before you part ways with your hard-earned cash, take a step back and consider what’s really on offer here. Drawbacks The Intermatrix U7 website lists ‘October’ as the shipping date for the device. This is a wee bit disingenuous on their part. Whilst October is the ‘target’ for the entry-level smartphone experience to arrive in Ubuntu, it is not the expected date for the Ubuntu Tablet interface. Indeed, work on the tablet interface is expected to continue into 2014, with Mark Shuttleworth saying that spring 2014 is the most likely date we’ll start seeing tablets turn up on shelves. That’s not to say that work on the tablet UI won’t be at a satisfactory level by October, but with Mir, and a boat-load of interface and app work to be done, it’s best not to presume it will be. HP Launch Ubuntu All-In-One PC for £349 http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2013...
HP, the worlds biggest PC vendor as of 2012, has today launched a brand new all-in-one PC running Ubuntu. The specs of the device aren’t going to blow the socks off anyone, but that’s not a negative; the Pavilion 20 is competent enough in its computing prowess to make it a model machine for everyday tasks. From E-mail and office work, to web-browsing and YouTube cat video marathons, this machine should be capable of handling it. But the real ‘wow’ factor comes from its pricing. At just £349 HP have pitched the PC well within the reach of your average consumer. A similar, though not identical, model is also available with Windows 8 priced at £499. HP’s Ubuntu intentions were formally announced at last October’s Ubuntu Developer Summit by Canonical’s VP of Sales and Business Development, Chris Kenyon. The Pavilion 20 is the first european release of Ubuntu-powered HP hardware. The company already sell Ubuntu-loaded Laptops in China.
Com estas... more... - Bruno Miguel from email

Astronauts Will Use Poop As Radiation Shield in 2018 Mars Mission http://laughingsquid.com/astrona...
Astronauts traveling to Mars as part of the ambitious 501-day trip of Inspiration Mars will be using their own feces to protect themselves from harmful cosmic rays. When the spacecraft launches on January 5th, 2018, its walls will be stocked with packets of food and water. As the trip progresses, astronauts will replace these bags with containers of their own dehydrated feces to protect against radiation. ”It’s a little queasy sounding, but there’s no place for that material to go, and it makes great radiation shielding,” Inspiration Mars’ Taber MacCallum told New Scientist. image via NASA via The Verge - Bruno Miguel from email
Comcast’s “Six Strikes” Email With Infringement Details Surfaces http://torrentfreak.com/comcast...
Earlier this week the six strikes anti-piracy system finally launched more than a year later than initially planned. One of the things that stood out most was the lack of information released through official channels. On launch day the Center for Copyright Information, who are in charge of the operation, were unable to tell us what measures the ISPs have in store for persistent pirates and none of the providers listed any detailed information on their websites. Luckily, more and more details were published in the days that followed, but many questions remained. For example, several Comcast consumers complained that the pop-up notification shown in the help section doesn’t include any details on the allegedly infringed files. How can people take action if they don’t know what they did wrong, people wondered. Vague alerts shared in Comcast help section This and other questions could have easily been avoided by clearly explaining how the “copyright alerts” are sent and what information... more... - Bruno Miguel from email

Mom Made Peruvian Government Hunt for Her Son After He Went Missing From Facebook http://www.neatorama.com/2013...
Most moms fret in worry when they don't hear from their children in a while, but 25-year-old Garrett Hand's mom really takes it to a whole 'nother level. She got the Peruvian government to start a manhunt for her "missing" son when he didn't update his Facebook page for a few weeks: In November, 25-year-old Garrett Hand and his 25-year-old girlfriend Jamie Neal flew from their California home to South America for a four-month bike trip. Before the couple left, they informed their friends and family that, for some of their trip (as they traveled through jungles and rainforests), they would be out of cellphone and Internet range. In January, they passed out of cellphone range. In February, Garrett's mom demanded the Peruvian government launch a full-scale search for the couple, whom she believed to be missing. What they actually were, was "having a blast." The couple's last communication with their families (and access to their bank accounts) occurred on January 25.... more... - Bruno Miguel from email
Iceland Tests Meat Pies for Horsemeat, Finds No Meat of Any Kind http://www.neatorama.com/2013...
Go ahead and swallow the red pill. You'll find that your whole life--or at least everything important in it--has been a lie: When officials in Iceland began hearing about horsemeat being secreted into beef products around Europe, they decided to run tests to ensure the same thing wasn't happening in Iceland. Icelandic meat inspector Kjartan Hreinsson says his team didn't find any horsemeat, but one brand of locally produced beef pie left it stumped: it contained no meat at all. [...] Hreinsson said it appeared to be some kind of vegetable matter. He said the mystery pie was traced to a firm in western Iceland and the case had been handed to municipal authorities. Link -via Dave Barry | Photo (unrelated): joyosity P.S. So far, Alex has not explicitly stated that NeatoShop t-shirts contain no horsemeat. Just putting that out there. - Bruno Miguel from email
Twenty Four Standard Causes of Human Misjudgement http://boingboing.net/2013...
A great post on Metafilter turned me on to "Twenty Four Standard Causes of Human Misjudgement," a classic 1995 speech by Charlie Munger (much cited, and transcribed here in PDF), in which Munger (a respected investor and partner to Warren Buffet) lays out, in plain language, the cognitive biases and blind-spots that he views as the root of much human misery. Munger's thinking is greatly influenced by Robert Cialdini's classic popular psychology text Influence, a title that Munger credits with laying out many of the blind spots of both economics and psychology. Munger's thinking is collected in another book: Poor Charlie's Almanack: The Wit and Wisdom of Charles T. Munger. I converted the talk to MP3 and listened to it twice today. I think I'll return to it again -- this feels like one of those mind-dumps that contains so much to pore over that it might be a work of years. - Bruno Miguel from email
Downloaded, Feature Documentary About the Rise & Fall of Napster http://laughingsquid.com/downloa...
“Without Napster, there is no Internet.” –Rupert Murdoch Filmmaker and actor Alex Winter has directed Downloaded, a feature length documentary about the rise and fall of peer-to-peer file sharing (mostly music) service Napster and “the birth of the digital revolution.” VH1 produced it for their film series “VH1 Rock Docs” and it premieres Sunday March 10, 2013 at SXSW. In 1998 Shawn Fanning, a teenage hacker and programmer, created the code that would become the basis for all peer-to-peer file sharing. In 1999, Fanning and his business partner, fellow teenager Sean Parker, launched the file-sharing service Napster. And what had begun as a largely unknown underground distribution medium erupted into a full-blown global revolution. “Downloaded” explores this revolution from its genesis to its peak, and explains Napster’s downfall. “It’s about the music and the bands, the fans and the moguls, and the brilliant young minds that ignited the biggest youth revolt since Alan Freed hit the radio,” says director Alex Winter. - Bruno Miguel from email
The differences between open source software and open source hardware: extra management challenges http://blog.p2pfoundation.net/the-dif...
Excerpted from Simone Cicero: “The main problem now with open hardware, is that to have something to what GIT and GitHub were for software is much more complicated. The main difference lies not so much in the management of files – many open hardware projects already manage all documentation via GitHub today – but in the realization of real-world projects that generate a tangible impact on productive activities. While with software you just click a button and start the “build” process that will produce the software to put into production, the process of “building” objects, open hardware artifacts – such as an electronic board or even a chair – is relevantly more complex and requires a substantial set of support tools, such as installation guides or the trivial details within a Bill of Materials (which in the world of software we can just settle thanks to a #include at the beginning of a file) So far the documentation necessary to replicate open hardware projects is much bigger – the... more... - Bruno Miguel from email
VPN Services That Take Your Anonymity Seriously, 2013 Edition http://torrentfreak.com/vpn-ser...
Prompted by a high-profile case of an individual using an ‘anonymous’ VPN that turned out to offer less than expected protection, TorrentFreak decided to ask a selection of VPN companies some tough questions. With our findings we compiled a report of providers that due to their setup were unable to link their outbound IP addresses with user accounts. Ever since we have received countless emails demanding an update. It’s taken a long time but today we bring the first installment in a series of posts highlighting VPN providers that take privacy seriously. Our first article focuses on anonymity and a later installment will highlight file-sharing aspects and possible limitations. We tried to ask direct questions that left providers with little room for maneuver. Providers who didn’t answer our questions directly, didn’t answer at all, or completely failed by logging everything, were simply left out. Sadly this meant that quite a few were disregarded. This year we also asked more... more... - Bruno Miguel from email
