Ugh I confess I had the opposite reaction to the ads on cable tv the other night...it was like here's 2mins of some show u wanna see and then 10 mins of annoying ads about things u'll never want at 20db louder volume than the show...ok that's probably enough whining about our wonderful world of consumerism for now. Merry Xmas!!!

Have you (maybe at Lincoln Loop) had a chance to work with any non-blocking server tech (Tornado, Twisted, node.js...)? Just curious :)
- Bryan Landers
I haven't personally and I'm not aware of any of our projects that are using any either. Yann Malet played around with Tornado during the sprint days at DjangoCon and wrote up a little demo: http://lincolnloop.com/blog... That was really just experimentation though. I know a couple of the guys have also been playing around with node.js...

I saw that Tornado in Django post and this bookmark in FF here, so I thought you might have your eyes on it ;) Very exciting stuff and it seems like there will be demand for it in future web apps...real-time mania!

Hadn't seen that - thanks! Now the question in my mind is js vs python vs something else (erlang...)
- Bryan Landers
from iPhone
It will be interesting to see how things play out. I'm more pessimistic toward investing too much into js (node.js) or erlang in the short term which has more to do with my perception that the Python ecosystem is much more mature at the moment in terms of libraries, frameworks, tools, and simply mindshare around managing and organizing projects. My gut feeling is that doing anything...

interesting. i often wonder why it's so difficult (still) to put websites together. i mean, i live comfortably in TextMate, but for "normal folks", i never know what to suggest for simple webdesign. (as well as ftp/hosting/database/etc -- shouldn't this be dead easy by now?)
- nate beaty
my friend who was a corporate graphic designer for years mentioned he uses this. sounded like it converts photoshop to xhtml/css, which sounded cool...haven't looked at it yet though ;) re: simple web design, the closest thing out there is http://squarespace.com, but even that isn't enough for most people. i've had clients turn that down because: 1. they wanted it 'more custom' than...

i'd also say that 95% of those people that don't want templates but want a fancy site also don't think it's worth the amount it would cost to pay a professional to do the work for them. definitely still a large gray area.
- nate beaty
then again, it's also very common for those folks to have no idea of the amount of work involved on their end to come up with *content* to fill that site, both initial content and ongoing updates! (who's getting bitter? haha.)

Great writing, nice graphics, solid performances. This movie manages to have a strong emotional impact with a minimal amount of information. Gordon-Levitt is carving out a notable body of work.

"It seems to me you can break down a culture, which on it's own is a dynamic, living thing, into 2 useful divisions: what it is and has been up until now, and what it will become. For integrating new members into a culture (I'm thinking of Joss Whedon show fans as well as Ethan's new employer, HP) you have schema (the Kantian version, I think it is), which is the knowledge that the newcomer is assumed to share with others in the culture, and the knowledge base shared by the existing members. Regarding schema, that's more about hiring and assessing cultural fit and aligned needs, and I'm sure there are tools and advice for that (I don't have much experience there). But, the knowledge base part is where you can find a lot of the tools you were expressing interest in discussing. If the culture is exclusive, inner-culture knowledge will be actively kept hidden from the new member (or it can become part of an initiation test to seek and discover the inside jokes, ideas, and concepts within..."

There's Ice Cream!? I brought some frozen meatballs home, so maybe we'll have to do that at home.

Oh yes, and soft serve is nice treat after the Ikea experience before heading out into a hot Los Angeles afternoon...the only drawback I remember is that you have to pony up for bags if bought stuff so you aren't trying to hold the melting ice cream in the same hand as the coat hangers, milk frother, patterned napkins, sheepskin rug, and assorted cookware like some kind of comedy sketch!
- Bryan Landers
Bryan is a pro! :) I love the soft serve too, and my dad's a sucker for the cinnamon rolls

I agree, don't people in Japan already do that sort of thing? But it seems like it'd be a bigger convenience for sellers, who don't need to go thru all the rigmarole of setting up a payment gateway

I like everything about it except the hardware and cards. I want the system to just require only the phones! The thing about being easier for merchants - what merchant that thinks it's too much hassle to get setup with a gateway is going to buy a fancy new swiper and an iPod touch or whatever? And for those who don't need the swiper, how is this different from PayPal/Amazon/Google? No plastic required.

We're all about being transparent :) To be fair, I love it when I find out that someone is using us without even knowing it!

Yup, I noticed the Posterous and BackType PSHB hubs, so that will probably happen more frequently for you. Is there anywhere you're compiling references to people using Superfeedr (like apps that make use of it for real-time products, etc)?
- Bryan Landers
We're currently working on that... but many of them want to keep that 'stealth'.

i said essentially the same thing to a friend the other day, his response: "if you're a band, what else is there?" muxtape.com came to mind, but he's right, it's come down to band pages and It's Too Painful To Migrate Elsewhere users.
- nate beaty
Aha. Now this conversation is getting interesting. So, in answer to, "if you're a band, what else is there?" I have too long an answer, but the short version is: EVERYWHERE! I recently helped 2 musician friends with their own destination sites/hubs (artist_name_dot_com), each of which used no less than 5 other web services (Twitter, Flickr, ArtistData, Facebook, MySpace, Vimeo,...

that sounds like a band that makes money and has some PR muscle! either that or they know a webgeek or are tech-savvy themselves. but you're right, getting yourself out there these days requires one foot in many services.

missed you at the LA django meetup, bud! i accept pie as repayment though, so you're in luck...
- Bryan Landers
yeah. I didn't know about it until a few hours beforehand, and I'm a little sick. I have much pie to make in atonement.
- Kris Kowal
that's what ryan mentioned, too (late notice)...i think jacob posted to our djangoLA goog group, but his hub is over on meetup, so...well, you would have been a very welcome participant. they made noises about doing more and with big django stars as guests, so i'll ping you next time to bully you into coming to the west side ;)
- Bryan Landers
haha nice. yeah that's creepily using the location of my apartment where i posted the photos (if only it could know where i took them!) everyblock still looks so good to me. i hadn't noticed that they are now, "wholly owned by msnbc.com," as seen here: http://www.everyblock.com/about....
- Bryan Landers
curious to hear what you were planning to share. i'm a little bummed i didn't catch you until the very end. i'll put together a blog post re: django project best practices and loop you in on that soon. cheers!

i second bryan - hope you will present next time!

I was going to talk about Python package management and specifically using virtualenv and pip. It's a bit of a broad subject to try to hastily cram into a few slides and I wasn't sure what skill levels people would be at. I'm glad I waited because I think adding a few visuals would help out. Next time :) Thanks for the encouragement!
- Brian Luft
...also for reminding me I have a friendfeed account.
- Brian Luft
+1 to talk about virtualenv and pip. Pinax uses them extensively, and sometimes people are confused about why it installs everything even Django, and where it installs it.
- Andrew Kurinnyi
I hope you guys stick around with me on FriendFeed a bit longer (post-Facebook acquisition). There's just a handful of folks I interact with over here, but the conversation and content discovery is great. Follow http://friendfeed.com/ericflo for more Django stuffs and FF activity ;)
