I guess Palin doesn't represent their family values, either. There goes Sarah Barracuda getting her own theme song. - Helen Is SOOO Not Of Troy via fftogo
No, I'm gonna wait. I'm perfectly happy with FF at the moment. Looking forward to trying Chrome though. - Bryan Landers
Chrome isn't available for mac yet...unless you want to do trickery and install Linux package. Not super thrilled about having another browser. Chrome will need to prove itself. - Jon West
Haha. Yes, I can see how you would not be thrilled with another hoop to jump through...but, hey, they are giving a lot of talk time to open standards, so that's a nice beginning to things. Can they just kill IE yet?! - Bryan Landers
yeah i know the ui could be better and its really fast can't wait untill it comes out for os x - MacFan420 via twhirl
holy shit . . . you ain't lying. Even i'm impressed, and these things rarely impress me - Lindsey Smith
I just downloaded it on my XP laptop. Need to try it on my VMWare iMac. Anyone notice it's just browser and tabs. No menu bar really minimizes it. - Larry Kless via twhirl
Playing around with it on my work PC, so far I like the snappiness of it. I'll get a better gauge of it at home. I do like what I'm seeing so far but I agree with Chris, needs some UI advice from users. Good thing it's open for beta huh? - Bryan
fast as in page loads? I think it's fast because it has DNS pre-fetching enabled by default... - jeff
I don't think I'll ever be waiting on Gmail again! - Jaemi kehoe
Gmail goes like a rocketship. I think most users will find the UI pretty intuitive - after all, 90% of web surfers only know how to use one button - the Back button - Tom Quinn
does it have AdBlock? that would be an interesting thing to ask of google - Gregory Lent
Things like Organise > Groups in Flickr generally take an age (member of 450+ groups). In Chrome it is lightning fast. - Tom Quinn
it is uber fast but i don't know why facebook commenting thing next to status or feed wont work - Shahrukh
*raises hand* I haven't logged in on Google Reader in about a month or two. - Vincent X
@Vincent X - My GReader usage has actually gone UP, but the blogs are getting more technical and actually geeky, not pseudo-geeky. - Yuvi
Heellll no...Scobles not a machine, the guy is a great commentator but definitely not have the time to spot every new webapp release. I'm a webapp fanatic & at the moment the web 2.0 blogs are one of the best ways to hear about new apps out there... - Zee at WeDoCreative
I still check out Mashable ...usually when someone in here links to it. - Simian DA (Amber)
@Zee - If it's cool enough it'll filter through anyway. - Yuvi
Mashable imo is the worst of the lot...just cheap commentry, cheap reviews, cheap press releases, cheap posts... - Zee at WeDoCreative
I have several that I mash together via Pipes and filter out keywords I don't care about. - Stupid Blogger (aka Tina)
:( Yuvi - now my day is ruined. I am really disappointed that you don't read CN. - Allen Stern
@Tina - I thought of doing that - but couldn't think of anything I would actually want to see. Someone launched a startup - big deal for them, but should I care? If it's actually useful Advice/Experience, then it is going to make it's way to me anyway (like Jason Calacanis' post on TC) - Yuvi
I read when there's something I need to know. Otherwise, tech news is largely just regurgitated stuff I pick up on Twitter and elsewhere anyway. - Aaron Brazell
@Allen - Sorry, but Policy decision. HTMLCenter is still on! :D - Yuvi
Yuvi, I find it helpful b/c I can filter out things I *don't* want to see. Specifically: iPhone. I don't want to read about it, so I filter it out. Another helpful feed for me is the customizable search at RSSMeme. I have a feed of everything that has been shared more than 5 times within the past hour, and that gets me a decent variety of articles: leans towards tech, but not entirely tech oriented. - Stupid Blogger (aka Tina)
Yuvi - sadly that policy seems silly - you should look at each blog individually and make a decision - I don't copy stories, I try to bring new things every day and I only write when I have something to add - same reason why I didn't write about Chrome yesterday. And here I thought you were different. - Allen Stern
Me neither, I skim the ones that Robert, Louis and others share if they look interesting. Have way too many science feeds to read first! - Sally Church
mashable- get invites via their widget on netvibes; however i do read RWW, venturebeat, inquisitr and valleywag; i stumble through TC from time to time. but this is it from tech blogs; of course i come across Robert Scoble's blog :) inevitable! I actually read moreVC/business/marketing/economics blogs. - Hayk Hakobyan
I'll start reading web 2.0 blogs again when the following conditions are met: 1) they stop using the following terms and phrases to describe the topics they cover: "game changer," "killer," "meat space," and "very cool;" 2) they stop referring to themselves in the royal we as a thinly-veiled attempt to be inclusive, and 3) they stop using question marks in headlines to change "This is what I think" into "This is what I think? Controversy? A question mark automatically means this will turn into a discussion?" - Mark Trapp
Honestly Yuvi, the more I read of what you say the more i disagree. The idea of "big deal for them, but should I care"?? What kind of attitude is that. If you're interested in web apps, social media & the whole web 2.0 scene then you'd care. And if you ever are planning on launching your own startup - then you'd care. You can learn a hell of a lot from the successes, developments & failures of them too. - Zee at WeDoCreative
Regarding your point on "it will get to me in the end"...bullshit. Believe me, there are hundreds, literally hundreds of amazing apps out there that people haven't heard about...And remember, the only way a select few get to you is via other people reading these "web 2.0 blogs". - Zee at WeDoCreative
Frankly, either you're into it or you're not - and you definitely don't seem like you are. That isn't a bad thing, but let's not start putting down blogs that people dedicate their lives to. - Zee at WeDoCreative
@Allen - Primary reason was that I had to control my feeds. I'm trying to get more into HardCore computer Science and statistics (you might have noticed output on theStatbot is decreasing big time), so I had to take out a lot of people I come across anyway via FriendFeed (Louis Gray, Scoble & hell even Mona got booted!) and the web 2.0 blogs (even Gadget Porn sets got kicked out) - Yuvi
I read Techmeme and think its valuable. I usually look for the Tech Crunch version of the day's valley bitchmeme news because they get right to the crux of the matter without winding all over the place. - Andrew Baron
@Zee - I still believe that if a startup is worthy enough, it'll get to me. I never got to FriendFeed via these blogs. I never got to Twitter via these blogs. - Yuvi
@Allen - So while you may be gone from the GReader, I still get you via FriendFeed. - Yuvi
Zee, Yuvi has a point. Most of what we hear and read about in blogs, media etc on daily basis corresponds to statistical noise and fluctuations. What I think he meant is that any signal will eventually be heard beyond the statistical noise and that means that either here on FF or somewhere else someone will mention it. Signal will in this case be any really important piece of news such as the Chrome release, which I am sure he would heard from BBC and CNN as well as here or on VentureBeat. - Hayk Hakobyan
Zee, rather than framing the discussion around how Yuvi (and others) just don't get it, maybe it's more fruitful to frame the discussion around what is it about the topic that doesn't interest most people. What can you do to make web 2.0 blogging more interesting to a wider audience? - Mark Trapp
@Hayk - and We don't need a signal as big as CNN - frankly I've read more from Louis Gray, Scoble and Allen (esp. the Vids) than CNN (might be 'coz of my geographical condition). It will eventually reach me some way - FriendFeed via Louis Gray, Twitter via Rob La Gesse, etc. I'm no Scoble. - Yuvi
Most of what you read there is like reading PR wires. BORING - Amit Morson
@Yuvi, sure :) I myself hardly read mainstream media, and then, only BBC. I also find blogs and twitts of likes of Chris Brogan, Jason Calacanis, Robert Scoble, Doc Searle, Louis Gray and Clay Shirley much more interesting and informative! CNN and big media sources always go for big news and even then a level-headed solid analysis is not guaranteed. I do therefore avoid usually. - Hayk Hakobyan
I'm in the process of giving them up - tech just doesn't seem as interesting (to me) now as it was 12months or so ago. I was at SXSW this year and didn't see anything that made me go 'Wow' - but I am not sure that this is a problem. I think for more and more of us 2.0 tech has infiltrated our lives in such a way (whether it is GPS or facebook or twitter) that it is not tech that is exciting and woworthy, but great content. Design, aesthetics, usability have become more interesting to me - not newness. - jeremy ettinghausen
@Hayk @Mark Well frankly, unless I am completely missing the point. The main lets say 5 tech blogs (not personal ones) TC, RWW, Mashable, CN, Inquisitr all focus on reviewing now web based startups. Some do a better job that others in the actual reviewing process, some are faster than others in getting the story out, some get bigger scoops than others, some are more fun to read - but one way or another, they all come together to get the story out about new & exciting startups to people who are... - Zee at WeDoCreative
interested in "new & exciting startups". For me, it really is not a complicated matter. Just like I go to the bbc sport site to read about the latest sports news & I also subscribe to the twitter feed...I do the same with the main tech blogs because I.am.interested. If you feel like you're losing interest in tech & the web startup scene, then of course it makes sense to take a step back away from these blogs. If not, then I just don't understand why you wouldn't subscribe to one or more of them. - Zee at WeDoCreative
Again, I see it as very simple though. Either you are (still) interested in the webapp / web startup scene or you're not. If you're really interested, then you subscribe to one, two or all...if you're not, then don't. - Zee at WeDoCreative
Zee :) you are absolutely right! I myself am subscribed to Venturebeat, Inquisitr, Sillicon Alley among others. I get RSS from them daily into my netvibes. I also check BBC news and see what news are on other fronts. I was merely expounding Yuvi's point, to which I agree toa certain extent. Nicolas Taleb wrote a book "Fooled by Randomness" put on top 100 of all time smartest books by FT. Author of this book also argues somewhat mockingly that makes no sense to read WSJ every day cause it is stat noise. - Hayk Hakobyan
Oops. Good luck to the flight crew (and passengers!). - Chris Baskind
I'm assuming resulting debris caused external damage which resulted in some torn fuel lines? Or is it possible the leak is break fluid and not fuel? - Stupid Blogger (aka Tina)
@SB - they intentionally dump the fuel so there's less risk of the plan catching fire when it lands (if it lands hard!). - Lindsay Donaghe
2 AA flights just landed, but neither looked like it was the one with the problem. Still waiting. - Josh Haley
Looks like it made it OK. It is sitting on the runway with service vehicles attending. A guy in a firesuit approaches. - Josh Haley
Thanks for the info, Lindsay. With that said: WTH kinda policy is that? No wonder we have wildfire issues in this country =/ Seems like they could have a system in place that would move the fuel to parachuted bladders of some sort and jettison those. - Stupid Blogger (aka Tina)
Tina - the general thinking is that the lives of 135 humans is worth a LOT more than any environmental damage done by the fuel. I totally agree. I'd burn a huge forest down to save a person. - Tad - just Tad
For some reason (maybe the way you said it) I don't agree with you Tad. - Lindsey Smith
But Tad, how many people are dying each year in those forest fires? Not to mention the insurance costs, etc. Seems like an emergency bladder system would be a viable (not to mention relatively low cost) alternative. - Stupid Blogger (aka Tina)
I would think that most of the fuel probably evaporates before it even hits the ground... and the rest is so distributed that the next rain would dispose of it. - Lindsay Donaghe
Actually, they said on CNN that this jet design can't dump fuel - they spent 3+ hours burning it to make the plane lighter in case they needed to do a touch and go and also to put less pressure on the landing gear. - Diane Ensey
@Lindsay I don't think that's true =/ - Lindsey Smith
On behalf of the Green press, please allow me to grant a fuel dumping offset to the distressed plane. The environmental damage is far offset by the benefit. Unfortunate, but necessary. - Chris Baskind
"Once released, the fuel trails behind the aircraft and creates a pattern that looks much like a contrail. Modern aviation fuel comes in many varieties but all are derivatives of kerosene. Kerosene evaporates rapidly in the atmosphere and very little typically survives in liquid form to reach the Earth's surface. The exact evaporative characteristics of dumped fuel depends on a number of factors like the altitude at which it was released, the atmospheric temperature, and the dumping pressure. Kerosene dumped at high altitude on a warm day tends to evaporate fastest. - Lindsay Donaghe
http://www.aerospaceweb.org/qu... "environmental groups have expressed concern over the potential pollution implications of fuel dumping. It has been estimated that as much as 15 million pounds of fuel was released over the world's oceans by commercial and military aircraft during the 1990s. Although kerosene poses no danger to the ozone layer, it is a petroleum product that can impact water quality much like an oil or gasoline spill. " - Lindsay Donaghe
I'm not saying to not get rid of the fuel, folks. I'm asking why it can't be tossed off the plan in a bladder rather than sprayed across the country side. - Stupid Blogger (aka Tina)
Is there a material that's strong enough to stand dropping from hundreds of feet in the air with a payload of flammable liquid gas that could make it to the ground intact and not be so heavy as to weigh the plane down? - Lindsay Donaghe
Thanks for the clarification Lindsay - Lindsey Smith
Tossed air plane fuel from altitude in a container is equivalent to a device we all know as a bomb. It's a bad idea. - Brian Norwood
@Robert: how do you deal with all of the applications you install for all the diffefrent demos/apps you are given? does your computer get all clogged w/ apps you don't use any more? - Jonathan Jesse
i bet he installs all the junk on the PC first, then saves the Mac for a smaller list - jeff
I've alwys meant to use one of my computers just for testing apps. The plan was to reinstall windows every month. But if scoble is going to do it for me, why bother? - Andrew Warner
Jonathan: I don't install very many apps anymore. Almost everything I do is a Web app. And I'm using Vista and it seems to get less OS rot than other OS's I've used on Windows. Jeff: yeah, I install even fewer things on my Mac, you're right. - Robert Scoble
@Jonathan : if you do install native applications on Windows, try Revo Uninstaller to remove them, it removes *everything* related to the app (files, regkeys...) what uninstallers often don't do well. You can also try Sandboxie, simple & efficient : it's ....a sandbox - Olivier
It was a really exciting day today, running up Chrome. There's a lot I like about it. The only issues I have are that Chrome doesn't seem to support the Middle-Mouse Btn Scroll (unless I've done something wrong), AND that my Google Docs Sidebar disappears every time I load (in a new or existing tab) it. Also Twhirl doesn't seem to recognise it as default browser, even though everything else does. - Stu Andrews via twhirl
I'm dependent on Firefox add-ons, so so far I don't feel motivated to invest much effort in Chrome. - Sean McBride
Not that I'm having a whine. It's Beta. It's stable. There's a lot less wrong than certain other browsers I've experienced. Well, one in particular. Heh. - Stu Andrews via twhirl
i have been living out of my browser full-time now for quite some time, it'll be nice to strip some of the space taking chrome out of the way and simplify the presentation. - Nathan Eckenrode
Stu, Chrome recognizes my middle mouse button scroll. I'm using a SOMIC which is probably an off brand. - Justin Long
Justin: Cheers. Might have to investigate it some more. - Stu Andrews via twhirl
The Feedly experience is fairly unique for me in the time it took to go from first discussion and launch. It was fun, but most sites don't have as long an incubation period. Thanks for the nice comments. - Louis Gray
Watching the man work on Feedly has been close to a religious experience. - Michal Chmielewski
Louis: You deserve them. We still have a long road ahead of us but one thing is sure, we would not be where we are today without you as a detonator. - Edwin Khodabakchian
Good lessons from the Feedly folks. Love that they call Louis a "detonator." - Robert Scoble
that would indeed be nice...specially if the firefox team gets to reflect the multi-touch APIs in the DHTML model the way safari does! I think that it would completely change the way kids interact with computers. - Edwin Khodabakchian
Either way, I can see Star Trek style UI *Interaction* before the end of my life :) - Yuvi
First off, it's not going to be an iTablet. Second off...please no no no no no no no no. I've been saying for years that if Apple came out with a tablet, I'd buy it the day it went on sale; but I just bought a spec'd out MacBook Pro! I can't afford this! Not now! But looking back at my "first off", I've calmed down a bit. :) - James Williams (willia4)
The ModBook but I thought I read that Apple was going after them causing the iTablet rumors to gained momentum. - ·[•_•]·
macbooks will definitely be upgraded. whether it's in the form of a touchsceen is yet to be confirmed, but it kinda of leans that way - Cee Bee
they don't know any better than the rest of us what's coming so shouldn't be using factual sounding headlines like this. stop whoring for pageviews. besides, it's just plain mean if this isn't true. - Jon Price
I am sill hoping for a UMPC from them. I was one of the Newton lovers. :) - Aura Mae
Tablet should be a function, not a device. IMO - Jeremy Chone
Scoble run faster to FB, they are going. : )) - Erhan Erdogan
Palo Alto Sol and La Fiesta are owned by the same family, as is Fiesta Del Mar, and Vive Sol. Helina and her husband Hector own Palo Alto Sol and Vive Sol. Helina's brother, I believe, own's Fiesta Del Mar, and La Fiesta is the original family restaurant. You'll find most of the same dishes at each place, like Grandma's Special, and the sauces for chips, but there is some variation. They're really nice people who make great food. - Chris White
"...now other companies can move in to its old spaces and help out downtown business owners." This is great news for startup companies if the prices come down. BTW, one of the Facebook buildings was the old Android building, and they had lunch brought in everyday which doesn't really help the downtown business owners. - Chris White
I've seen Bigfoot. I was marry to it for 2 years back in the last 80's. I still have nightmares. - Al Degutis via twhirl
I must say, I'm totally shocked. With such convincing scientific evidence (possum DNA) and a Real Press Conference™, I just knew this was it. - Chris Baskind
I'm speechless. Speechless. I am without speech. I have no speech. - Alejandro S.
Fry: Are you there, Bigfoot? I'm not like the others. I see beyond the monster coating to the misunderstood loner inside. You probably have a wounded raccoon that you tend to every night like this - Rooh! Rooh! But then they shoot you, but you teach us about stuff. - Stu Andrews via twhirl
Darn, I was hoping it would be a more creative hoax, not your run of the mill variety. - Deepak
Sasquatch revealed! LIVE Exclusive coverage right here on FF...sooo fabulous! - Susan Beebe
And I heard the supposed DNA samples came back as human and possum. - Tim Finucane
I don't know why news outlets even bother. There is no Bigfoot. Anyone who says otherwise is incorrect (lying, deluded, insane, whatever). That's it. - Neil Saunders
I am amazed how much coverage this got. And these things are so country/region specific. - Deepak
I, for one, am shocked. What's next? The Easter bunny isn't real? - Al Stevens
"Many of us prefer using online note taking applications for research, bookmarking sites, or quickly jotting down ideas. While there are many online note taking applications, we searched around the Web and compiled a list of those we felt were richer in features and usability." - Hutch Carpenter
I had never heard of a few of these. Somewhat embarrassing, considering that's supposedly what my whole damn blog is about. - mrshl
Evernote is definitely FTW. I just got my t-shirt in the mail today :D - Lindsay Donaghe
The interesting thing about Evernote is the fact that its got an iPhone app, Mac app, and Windows app in addition to the online version. Versatility is a great thing. - Adam Helweh
I'm definitely loving Evernote. One down note though. I loaded a graphic that had nothing but words. No success in the app recognizing the characters. But overall, great app. - Hutch Carpenter
I've used evernote on windows (own it), jott.com, and omnioutliner. I liked evernote but worried about portability and was screwed when I started using mac for such things. Frankly, I love outlines but now I'm using a folder full of plain-text files in an emacs-outline mode style. Simplicity is bliss but I must admit I miss some way to sync with my phone. Maybe I'll give evernote on mac a try again... - scott willeke
This is freakin' sweet! I can't wait to see what the next generation of interfaces look and act like. - Jon West via Bookmarklet
I wanted to comment on a couple of things with this. Are you noticing a major lack of voice recognition integration? I've been trying to imagine what will be more efficient than typing words on a keyboard (which seems kinda primitive, no?) and it seems like it will have to be more than just physical gestures. Voice input would be much more natural and quick. Of course you can't always talk and the gestures are very powerful, too. - Bryan Landers
I like the interface being hidden until the user needs to interact with it. What do you think about the objects concept (groupings of friends to contact them, web browser history for shopping recs, etc)? Is that a solid foundation that's usable? What about the concept of 3D spacialization (is that a word)? Where it's not just a 2D space that the user has to manipulate, but layers of 2D space (or anything we can dream up :) - Bryan Landers
Ha! I have no idea where that comment came from! I don't remember entering that...ah well, all setup and good to go. Jon, can you believe I actually manually compiled my MySQL install! I have a PowerPC running Leopard, and the package installs didn't look they would work. The joys of sticking with your old(er) hardware :) - Bryan Landers
Nice! Setting up a server is always an accomplishment. I noticed that the notes field in delicious is used as a comment in friend feed. Same with google reader. - Jon West
That's what's strange...I never enter notes in Delicious! Tags have always been suffice. I noticed also the other day that FriendFeed had duplicated a number of Delicious links (same exact post time, etc) that weren't duplicated on Delicious itself. Weirdness... - Bryan Landers
