I didn’t start off 2009 with a goal to lose weight or get to any certain fitness level, I just wanted to feel better. I didn’t set out with a plan or weight target but with a new year as a starting point and a commitment to staying open to where I could go with my fitness. Several people have asked me how I did it so I wanted to share a few things I did for those looking to improve their health in the new year.

1- I joined a gym. I have been a member at several gyms but never found I stuck with them. Too far a drive, too cold, too overwhelming, too many excuses. Fortunately, the gym nearest to my house has heated covered parking and they were running a promotion at the end of last year that was too good to pass up. Even if I never went, it was a fairly cheap insurance policy should I actually follow through with my plan.

2- I took classes. In the past, I would try to eek out my own workouts by running on a treadmill or picking random machines and executing random reps. I was totally lost in the gym and overwhelmed by all the options. This time I decided to play to my strengths: I like routine and measurement. So I picked a time that I could make everyday, 6am, and told myself I would attend whatever class they were offering at that time. This lead to me developing a taste for my own pride as I sweat it out next to housewives and grandmas who would wipe the floor with me every morning. It also lead to a genuine routine where I knew I had to be in my spot by a certain time or I wasn’t going to get my exercise for the day. I’m sure its not for everybody, but it worked for me.

3- I started tracking calories. After a couple months of consistently working out at 6am every morning I was feeling more fit, but the scale was telling another story. Losing weight wasn’t a goal, but I was bummed not to see some pounds coming off. I was discussing this with a friend who said something that’s dead obvious, but it struck a cord “you need to burn more calories that you consume”. I’d always been overwhelmed at the idea of tracking calories, but I found an iPhone app called LoseIt that made it dead simple. You can track the calories you burn, though working out, and those you consume which creates a bit of a game dynamic as the two ends of the calorie spectrum battled is out everyday. Plus, having it on the phone is insanely handy.

4- I found cycling. I’ve always considered myself an outdoorsy kind of guy. Skiing and mountain biking have always been a part of my life. But they’re activities fueled mainly by gravity and adrenaline rather than fitness. In june I broke my collar bone while mountain biking. The doctor said I could get on a road bike sooner than I could return to the trails so I picked one up and was hooked from my very first ride. I found something in cycling that I hadn’t found in anything before. It contains the perfect balance of pain, suffering, adrenaline and accomplishment. I threw myself into it over the summer and its been a very rewarding.

5- I shared. I know it may sound hokey, but the daily pictures I’d take of my rides or the tweets from the gym were a big part of what motivated me to get out of bed at insane hours and get my rides or workouts in. The feedback and encouragement I’d get from my friends and complete strangers was really gratifying and pushed me forward when I may not have been able to on my own.

I don’t mean for this to be prescriptive by any means or cavalier to suggest that I’ve got this all figured out. Its just my way of answering the question I’ve heard a lot this year about how I lost so much weight and a brief “thank you” to the many of you that helped me get on track.

Lots more to work on in 2010 and I hope to be better about sharing what I’m learning as I try to take things to the next level.

Every level of every sporting discipline has an entry fee. If you can’t pay it you can’t play it. Sure, God-given talent might give a headstart, might even put you at the top of the heap. If so you’re an exception. How common is the truly exceptional? For most, sooner rather than later the real and hard work must be done. Speed (or strength or... - http://bryc3.com/post...
