I'm not in the market for a new camera, but this essay and the gorgeous photos accompanying it (particularly the portraits) really makes me want a Lumix GF1.

iPhone cases are two a penny, but I've used this one for a while now and really like it. It offers quite a lot of protection without bulk, but also improves your grip on the phone significantly.

A very elegant and sophisticated plotting package for R. Looks a lot easier to use than the basic graphics package once you've mastered the language.
- bsag
the emphasis is on "once". I found it confusing to have the "easy" qplot and "advanced" ggplot, as some things only work for one of the two (at least in my experience)
- Michael Kuhn
I've always wondered what it adds over lattice (though ggplot looks a bit better with the default settings)
- Rajarshi Guha
Well, I've never really looked into lattice and I'm a sucker for a pretty graph :-). I believe that ggplot2 is supposed to have a more 'language-like' and standardised language.

"A lot of traditional folk from the British Isles is like that too. Actually Jones' songs and delivery reminded me a lot of the writing of Alistair MacLeod - one of my favourite writers ever, incidentally. His short stories are heartbreaking, but without a trace of sentimentality. I want to say 'hard' but they're not that either, because he has sympathy for his characters, but doesn't make out that their suffering is picturesque in any way. 'The Lost Salt Gift of Blood' is the best collection of short stories I've ever read, and many of the stories still haunt me."

An interesting workflow for collecting references, making notes and assembling a paper, on a Mac. I've just upgraded to DEVONthink 2, and am loving it. Now I'm tempted by Sente too.

"I liked the EyeHome too, and wonder why they scrapped it. It was pretty easy to use and though it had its quirks, it was very useful. Anyway, I suspect that your EyeTV experience would be much improved on a new Mac mini, particularly the very latest ones."

QuickLook is so convenient (particularly for Word .doc files) that I've often found myself wanting to keep a QuickLook window or two open while I switch apps. This is the solution to that problem, it seems.

I like the idea of this system for keeping your camera close at hand but secure, though it's a bit pricey. Secretly, I'd just like to look like a cowgirl :-)

Instructions for posting to Posterous from Google Wave. Since you can easily email Posterous with regular email, I guess this isn't too earth-shattering, but it's a hint of the kind of functionality that Wave will provide once it's up and running properly.

This looks like a nice, lightweight and attractive app for accessing your Simplenote notes on the desktop. Though the Simplenote website is pretty good as it is.

"I know, I should have started looking a long time ago, but such is the pull of procrastination and the dread of shopping. And it's true - Hobbits have more fun."

"I know how you feel. I didn't even get on to the horror that is Changing Room Lighting. All I know is that they use a special wavelength of light that highlights all your cellulite."

"Thanks! Re: 'Hobbity', perhaps you underestimate the affection that I have for Hobbits :-) I should say (if I haven't done before), that Mr. Bsag is the same height as me, so we are both Hobbity together. I accepted years ago that I was never going to be either tall or willowy (let alone both together), and until I have to buy clothes, I'm quite comfortable with my shape. I'm sturdy, strong, (literally) down to earth and grounded, and those are all good and positive things. It's just a bit irritating when you try to buy clothes that are in no way designed for your dimensions, particularly when you're not that interested in clothes or fashion, and so have no motivation to try hard to find something. A few years ago, I was in a book shop, flipping through a book about the making of the Lord of the Rings film, and found a hilarious anecdote from one of the casting people. They were recruiting extras, and EVERYONE wanted to be an elf (or an orc: if you can't be beautiful, be a badass)...."

Interesting interview with Jeremy Howard of Fastmail.fm. I've been with them nearly a year now, and I wouldn't go back to another service provider as my mail email host. Brilliant reliability, features and flexibility.
- bsag
I've had my fastmail account for about 5 years I think, and in all that time there has been one outage that lasted long enough for me to be (very slightly) inconvenienced by it. Even then, I knew what was going on by looking at the status page. Very reliable, and I find the interface much easier and more pleasant than GMail. Spam control is also very very good -- I get heaps, but it all nearly all goes into the spam folder, with nary a false positive. Worth a lot more to me than the $40/year I pay.
- Bill Hooker
I agree - they are great value for money. The spam control is great, as you say, and the filtering generally is really powerful. I pipe all my various accounts into Fastmail, filter them into different mailboxes to make them easy to deal with, and then I have everything neatly arranged, sans spam, on any IMAP client I wish to use.

Nifty hint that could be extended to do fancier stuff. I must say that I think the new Dropbox iPhone client is brilliant. Being able to view and/or email a link to a document to someone while on the move will probably save my vegetarian bacon one of these days.

"I know, that kills me too. I've also seen the reverse happen, with Bianca taken by surprise by Bella. Bianca actually jumped in the air and bounced off a closed door, like a particularly impressive Parkour manoeuver."

There are loads of camera/filter apps around, but this looks like a nice balance of ease of use and good results. Just wish it shared to Flickr too, though.

Simple but very useful utility to allow you to schedule Time Machine backups whenever you want: you can use an interval (every n hours) or at calendar intervals.
