Re: Real Ventures Fund III Gets First Close at $50 Million - http://www.betakit.com/real-ve...
"Glad to hear Real getting more money to fuel more deals. Overall, we need to see more of these announcements to get the Canadian startup market really moving forward. In particular, Canada needs institutional investors to get back into the asset class after a long hiatus." - Mark Evans

"I understand why Canadian institutions have stayed on the sidelines given the historical returns vs. other options. At some point, however, you have to believe they will start to allocate some of their assets to a high-risk opportunity." - Mark Evans

Re: Why Aren’t Toronto’s Candidates For Mayor Loving Startups? - http://www.markevans.ca/2014...
"Thanks for the info about David Soknacki. It has ben interesting to see how the startup community has thrived with little interest or participation from the city. Everyone talks about economic development and job creation but they ignore something happening right now. There are many things the city could do to support startups that wouldn't involve cash. I'm sure they could act as an effective catalyst with the right people involved." - Mark Evans

"Congrats on the launch of the canvas! We're on the same page when it comes to startups and their ambivalent approach to marketing. Hopefully, the canvas will be a valuable tool for startups to approach marketing in way that is user-friendly, accessible and understandable." - Mark Evans

Re: The most important go to market strategy that most companies ignore. - http://gotomarketguy.com/importa...
"Great post, Craig. It's always interesting (and puzzling) when companies don't spend enough time engaging with customers given there is so much insight and intelligence that can be gathered. I think it may have to do with the fact talking to customers take time and energy. Then again, the ROI can be really high. I passed along this post to a client, who needs to do a better job of connecting with customers." - Mark Evans

Re: Tell Stories Like This to Take Your Fundraising Pitch from Mediocre to Memorable - http://firstround.com/article...
"I'm a huge fan of storytelling for everything a startup does - be on their Website, case studies, blog, etc. Far too often, startups are bad storytellers because they're far too focused on their products rather than talking about things that will interest customers." - Mark Evans

Re: Did WhatsApp Really Do No Marketing? - http://www.markevans.ca/2014...
"Good question. For early-stage startups, I think that the DIY approach works if you're willing to do the legwork (e.g. build a target list database, connect with media on social media, develop good pitches and reach out to reporters directly). If a startup has a good budget, it still makes sense to do the legwork but they can afford to pay for a publicist who has solid connections with the people you want to reach. Even then, I think startups only have to use PR when and if needed (e.g. one to two months) as opposed to having them on retainer." - Mark Evans

Re: Canada’s Startup Ecosystem in 2013: Encouraging and Evolving - http://www.markevans.ca/2014...
"Things are definitely moving in the right direction, which is excited. I think the startup ecosystem has come a long way in the past three to five years. Of course, more work has to be done and more capital needs to be available but there are lots of positives." - Mark Evans
