See How Your Surname Dispersed Across the World
September 29 at 1:06 am - Link
Hmmm... the results for Taylor (my maiden name) weren't very surprising (except, perhaps, for the high concentration of Taylors in Australia-- hi Australian distant cousins!). But I wonder if they are using stats from the whole world. Jimenez shows a high concentration in Spain and Argentina (expected), but nothing in the rest of Latin America. Are there really more people named Jimenez in New Zealand than Guatemala (where my name comes from)? Doubtful. - Shannon Jiménez
OK, just saw on the FAQ that they only have data for 26 countries. - Shannon Jiménez
They pull the data from: "The database holds the names of 300 million people in 26 different countries, representing one billion of the population which is approximately one-sixth of the entire world." ...doesn't say where and how they collected it. I may have to do some more research, but thought it was a pretty neat tool. :) - Mona N.
Lool... Every result I get is strikingly similar. - Brandon
Nice, no result! 8D - Zu aka ElijahBailey
Very very typical French Canadian surname Tremblay, more in the U.S. than in France, really weird! - Zu aka ElijahBailey
Quelle surprise, Ireland is full of Fitzgeralds: http://tinyurl.com/4jtx2j - Grant Fitzgerald
Sharon, phew. It was an epic fail for my husband's last name. :) - Cyndy
Ireland #1, which I suspected. But Belgium and New Zealand beat out USA? I had no idea. - tj hanton
typically we are in Italy, America, and Argentina. Let's see how accurate it is. - Pete Delucchi
They definitely don't have information for some countries that don't use Cyrillic symbols officially - my last name is mostly popular in New Zealand (understandably, lots of Russian live there now) but is not even present in Russia itself. - Svetlana Gladkova
Svetlana: The site just launched and has collective data from 26 countries... unfortunately Russia isn't one of them. :\ Perhaps I should've put a disclaimer in the headline. ;) - Mona N.
Hansen is pretty popular in India!!! Who knew? :) - Baard Overgaard Hansen
LOL!!!! - Mona N.
Apparently Carlill is very popular in the UK. I find this hard to believe, because I've never come across a single person outside my family with that name. - Alexander Carlill
Mona, thanks for explaining, I think I should have searched for it deeper myself :( It's obvious that Russia is not on the priority list of any startup so I should have known better before trying, just wanted to see if the guesses that it must not have all the countries supported were true or not. - Svetlana Gladkova via twhirl
Strange, but it seems my last name does not exist... :/ - Sasha Kovaliov
Thanks for this Mona. I found this site a few weeks ago. Very interesting. My surname is mainly in the UK but there are a few in the US. Interestingly it tells me there is a low figure in India, Canada, most parts of Europe, Argentina, Japan, NZ and Australia. - Kol Tregaskes
Mine is more prevalent in the UK and New Zealand than it is here in the states... Interesting... - Stupid Blogger (aka Tina)
boy, it was ... mmmm... not-so-surprising... most probably written by yet another American thinking that Latin is most used alphabet in world :-/ - silpol
@nlupus I guess you have to use surname Smith -- you will get much better response then , lmao - silpol
Hmm, apparently my surname is Greek, and the concentration is ultra low across the world, mostly in Belgium. For the record though, there is no Greek in my family at all, or Belgians. It's a mystery - Mo Kargas
Mine checks out fairly accurate: Netherlands, USA and Australia. - Mark VandenBerg
trying *traditional* Finnish surname Virtanen - it makes me rotflmao: says it is Finnish but then also says it is used mostly in Sweden... this guys definitely had some stuff sniffed before they designed & implemented service :) - silpol
Yeah, this is off... Carreira is a Portuguese name (the "ei" gives it away) but it shows it as Spanish and doesn't even have Portugal or Brazil on the list. FAIL - Jason Carreira
Mine: UK, NEW-ZEALAND, AUSTRALIA, CANADA, US, IRELAND - Capn' "One-Eye" Longman ☠
pretty kool but from others comments it sounds not to be 100% correct :) - (jeff)isageek
mine was very accurate given what I know about my family history - Deborah Carraro via twhirl
Current surname: Spain and Argentina outweigh anywhere else. Maiden name: Ireland, Australia, UK, USA and New Zealand. Both make sense. - Carmen
More of my name in New Zealand it seems... - Richard Peat
Maiden name: Ortega. Not surprising: Spain, Argentina, and United States. Surprising: France, Switzerland, and Canada Shocking: Australia, Belgium, Norway, and Austria. Hi super distant cousins! :D - zoblue (Zulema)
Not very accurate. It claims the top country for my surname is Japan. Umm no. - Jauder Ho

This is important. I for one tend to forget the tireless IT department of the BBC. is the iPhone next? - Roberto "Maverick" Bonini
It already works with the iPhone .... just browse to bbc.co.uk/mobile/iplayer - Peter Cattell
You sure, peter? I just tried with my iTouch. - Roberto "Maverick" Bonini
It will only work in the UK I think but it should work with the iPhone - John Cooper
@Roberto... absolutely..I have my iPhone here, and tried it again to be sure. I dont know where you are but maybe it will only work in the UK??? - Peter Cattell
The first mobile device that iPlayer supported was the iPhone/iPod Touch back in March - and if you search back then there was a good deal of debate about them having chosen them to support first. Limitations are that it will only allow you to watch TV content over a wi-fi connection, not over 3G, they also don't convert all the programmes over to the iPhone/iPod Touch format. For those outside the UK, TV content on the iPlayer is limited to the UK - most radio can be accessed abroad though. - Richard Peat
I am in the Uk- Scotand. Anyone have any sucess with the iPod Touch? - Roberto "Maverick" Bonini
yeah, when you can get the program - it works wonderfully - Zee from WeDoCreative
that's on the iphone btw - Zee from WeDoCreative
Ahh Right. Got it working now. Went to bbc.co.uk/iplayer and it redirected me. thanks for all your help guys. - Roberto "Maverick" Bonini
Works wonderfully. Watching Have I Got News For You. Funny. - Roberto "Maverick" Bonini
It blew my collegues at work away when I showed them an episode of Top Gear in the office ... the quality is exceptional - Peter Cattell
Yeah, I was really impressed with the iPod Touch/iPhone version when it first came out. I took a couple of pictures of the quality when I blogged about it back then. http://tinyurl.com/5gqbof Incidentally, a side effect of the way it is implemented with quicktime rather than running in the browser also means that if you have a video cable the iPod Touch/iPhone can show the picture on a normal TV. - Richard Peat
The quality is unbelivable. Pity we cant buy/rent/save the shows. - Roberto "Maverick" Bonini

“My son turns one in 8 days, so why does it seem he is already in the terrible two's?”
August 8 at 1:22 am - via Ping.fm - Link
Man, its passes.. comes and goes... My little girl is 2 years and 3 months and she is going through them. She gives us headaces sometimes but it's the little moments inbetween that keep you powering through. Her new thing is taking me by the hand and dragging me off into far flung coners of the house for no other reason than she wants to walk with me,,, it's a cliche I know but Cherish... - John Worthington
My son is a month behind you. Some days he's a little angel that brings us great joy. Other days he's teething. Enough said. :-) - Robert Scoble
Wait to you get to growth spurts... :) - John Worthington
2^3 = 8 - weblivz via twhirl
Oops, wrong coment!! My daughter is 1 also - she is the same. Kids are aging quickly these days :) - weblivz via twhirl
My first son turns 2 (years) in November... and my second one turns 2 (months) in August! It's not easy, in particular for mom, but you get many fantastic moments. - luca Filigheddu
Having 3 kids, I can tell you 2 things about the terrible twos: 1) they last from around 18 months to 42 months and 2) each successive child is worse. And pregnancy, when all is said and done is actually 10 months. - Sergio Cruz
Everyone will tell you they grow out o it, and "oh well, you are passed the worst" ... don't believe them... the terrible twos are replaced by the horrible 3s and then the dreadful fours..... it carries on into teenage... as long as you know the problems don't disappear, they just change, you will be fine :) - Peter Cattell
My son just turned three, and he seems to have forgotten to leave the terrible two's behind. :) - Sean Brady
OH, I know exactly what you mean!!! Hang in there. - Brad Nickel
It's the terrible three's you'll have to worry about - Shey
What Shey said. Two is NOTHING compared to three. - Cyndy
We raised 8 ... yup, eight and while they were / are definitely challenges, it was absolutely the most meaningful and worthwhile thing we've done in our lives. If you want to build a legacy, build it by shaping the little ones entrusted to your care into who they're meant to be ... check out somebody like Ray Guarendi (drray.com) for some useful ideas. - Bob Lozano
Yeah, threes are worse. But they're also a LOT more interesting. It's sometimes, but not not always true that each successive child is worse -- I think that depends on temperament and circumstance just as much as birth order. Just remember that your kid is doing what kids do. He HAS to. Childhood is tough. Your job is to try not to make his life any tougher than necessary. That's my philosophy anyhow. - Nathan Rein
AW! YAY!! ...can i come over for some cake? kthxbai - Mona N.
it's not so much the two's you have to worry about, it's the early three's. my oldest son is 4 and he's a ton of fun now. he still has his moments but that's life. enjoy it while it lasts though, it goes very quickly! - acedanger the maverick
I just keep thinking, "Man, he is quick, he is smart, he can destroy the whole house in minutes...what's going to happen when he's walking?" - Rahsheen™
What Shey & Cyndy said. Threes are actually the age that should be called terrible. They have opinions! And they can voice them! Ack. ;-) - Lisa L. Seifert
Aw, nathan. :-) - Lisa L. Seifert
Walking is nothing. Wait till he figures out how to climb. - saeba
@saeba I'm afraid he will start doing both simultaneously. He watches his brother carefully and already tries to climb onto furniture. The boy has no fear. - Rahsheen™
my son turns 20 in a few weeks ....sems not v diff from terrible 2's ....it just evolves every five years I guess !! - viki saigal
