"Experience" isn't the only thing that sells iPhones. - Will Higgins
Will: really? You are kidding, right? - Robert Scoble
And this was deduced from an incomplete platform and a handful of demos? Cmon Robert. - Bwana
@Robert: Don't forget those that buy everything with Apple-logo in it ;) - Jemm
We'll have to wait for real details about what it can and can't do, *but* I'm encouraged by the little we've seen so far. Seems like they've put real thought into the ID of the product as well as the experience. And Will, the experience of using the iPhone is it's most compelling "feature" IMHO. - mikepk
iPod phone. That sells em. - Bwana
Bwana: I had a LOT more than a few minute demo. If you have some data that backs up your skepticism put it up otherwise please keep it to yourself. - Robert Scoble
Bwana, iPod definitely doesn't hurt. I still think it's the overall experience of the phone though. I had (almost) all the capabilities of my iPhone in previous cells/smartphones. Nothing new there. What *is* new is that I actually use those features almost every day, and after years of owning it, I *still* enjoy using the features. That's something special. - mikepk
It's the lack of data Robert. This thing isn't a week old and you've crowned it. That's enough for skepticism right there. - Bwana
First look is definitely encouraging, but will reserve final judgment till the product is actually in my hands. I'm no fan of the iPhone or it's hype and hubris, so this represents a potential device for me. - Mo Kargas
Yes, there is no picture of a fruit on it. And Palm don't have a church. But experience? No. Otherwise anyone would have thrown away the iPhone after typing a word on the onscreen keyboard. It's all about imagination. Reminds me on that simpsons apple mockup: http://alearner.com/mapple/ - Ryo
Bwana, i'm encouraged but I agree we need to hold off until we get more details on it, and some less "guided" and "supervised" demos. It would have to offer a religious experience to get me to turn over my iPhone, but I'd like to see a real compelling competitor. Can only help us in the long run. - mikepk
Oh noez... Palm is not the competitor. You are already outrun by Android. - Ryo
Let's face it. Apple has momentum, a solid OS, and the app store. It's a sub par phone but a great web appliance. That said, I am extremely impressed with all the thought that went into making the new Palm Pre. From social network interaction, to the wireless charger. It will be one to beat. 2nd place maybe, but better than dead. And this coming from someone who will buy the iPhone. - Paul Puri
I think Android has a different role to play, personally. Android is a long term play by google. It's an interesting strategy that may win in the long run, but Android needs time to mature and for handset hardware to be commoditized. - mikepk

yeah...type ping.fm in mobile safari. Then, save it to your home screen - shaun mclane
not what I meant, I think u know that too.. - Zee.
+1. I would love that - Jeff Douglass
I just downloaded Nambu last night ($4.99). It supports FriendFeed, Twitter, Ping.fm, indenti.ca, laconi.ca, and others (I think). I haven't delved into it too much, yet, but at first gloss, it seems like a very promising app. - Robert Clockedile
would love to hear more about it once uve had a play Robert - Zee.
you can add i.ping.fm to your home screen add it works like an app... - Tom Deeter via twhirl
I've tried Nambu (right after they dropped the price--ghetto!) and it is pretty solid this far. I use it mainly for FriendFeed though (although the Ping UI looks pretty good. - darnell via Nambu

Just one of the reasons I want one. - Robert Scoble via mail2ff
Amen to that. - Nicholas Kreidberg
Awesome...amazing we all think it's so great yet it should be a fundamental feature in every smartphone. - Jonathan Brown
does it feel good in the hand? - James Cooper
<whisper> My G1 has been doing this since I first turned it on </whisper> - Stupid Blogger (aka Tina)
Maybe this will finally get Apple to raise the priority on this feature ... - Patrick Jordan
I strongly suspect next iPhone release will have it. But my phone has it now, so I got that going for me, which is nice. - Wade Dorrell
After watching someone from work try 3 times to enter our 64-char-long wifi passwd on an iPhone, lack of copy/paste seems like a security hole, since it encourages you to use short passwds. - Richard Walker
@Richard haha.. you are so damn right about that statement :P - Larsen aka Qbat
Well, just like in my iPhone... oh wait. - Sebastian Dadał
I really love my iPhone. While I'm not above switching to something superior, I would be satisfied if they just up the ante for Apple as suggested by @Patrick and compel them to deliver some much-needed functionality. I would like it to be a bit more open too. - Devon Campbell
Apple needs to get copy/paste on the iPhone - Kevin Whalen
As badly as copy&paste, iPhone needs better, slicker ways to switch between apps and organize and work with home screens - hopefully Palm may sort of embarass Apple into some greater efforts ... - Patrick Jordan
It's going to be interesting to see if apple has a better solution up their sleeves. Or perhaps it will just melt away with inter-app integration such as URLs and data detectors. - Robin Barooah
hahahahha - Mona N.
DO EET ALREADY, APPLE - Live4Soccer
Woot! Palm! :-) - Mathew A. Koeneker
Way to go Palm! Competition raise all boats. - Clarence Chiang
I won't believe it until I see that its better then my old palm pilot. - Colide81 (James)
Isn't that lovely..? :) - Daynah
Apple: I don't care if you have to PR spin this and make it look like you just added the most innovative feature ever on the iPhone, JUST ADD IT. - Brad Butner
Great product IF ONLY it is priced right and works with my Mac. - Rom Feria
heard anything on pricing? - Yolanda
Quick question on the iPhone... So they update it tomorrow with Cut & Paste... What do we complain about then? - Johnny Worthington
Inability to multi-task, push, and its stupid stupid cables! - Mona N.
@Johnny - lack of video recording, nothing in the way of organizing our ever-growing numbers of apps and our home screens, lack of some sort of launcher app ... - Patrick Jordan
oooh cut & paste! what about a legit Qik app or the MMS function? - Courtney Engle
Cool... I would like to be able to drag and rearrange my home screen icons via my computer - Johnny Worthington
There is no need for MMS - I can email. Qik, I am waiting for. And truth be told, lack of copy and paste doesn't bug me. I just want PUSH. - Mona N.
the need for MMS is more about friends sending me messages and having to log in to at&t website to see them. more on the receiving than the submitting end - Courtney Engle
@Johnny - yeah, something like that, or that plus better way to do things on the iPhone in this area too - wiggly icons were cute when we first saw them, but with 5,6,7 etc. screens of apps, they suck - you get one fave onto a page you want and the knock-on effect is clumsy / knocks others off were you want them ... - Patrick Jordan
Do you really think people will ditch the Iphone and change carriers for this thing? - David
That keyboard sure seems tiny. But not really compared to the portrait mode iPhone keyboard. - Ari Braginsky
Palm is turning japanese, finally. - Greg
Excellent. Copy and paste just like Windows Mobile has been doing for longer than the iPhone existence, and I think that includes secret existence. I wonder if copy/paste was even possible in 2000 on the first widely available Palm-based phone, the Kyocera QCP6035. - MiɳiMagɘ is EnderMage
What does that mean, Greg? - Mona N.
So people want copy/paste more than native apps? - Bwana
No way, Bwana; I want EVERYTHING more than a few things! - MiɳiMagɘ is EnderMage
Dare to effing dream....Has Apple ever given a reason that makes sense about why cut/paste is not available on the iPhone? Is this like the second mouse button, where it take 10 years to convince them it's a mission-critical feature? - Matthew DeVries
I don't need MMS, but I do need the ability to receive MMS. What happens when my business contacts MMS me something on an iPhone? My plan is up in february and I need to decide soon between G1 and iPhone. - Matthew DeVries
Personally, I've never used copy/paste on a mobile device. - Bwana
I don't need copy and paste because the iPhone enables me to do everything I needed copy and paste for. (used it a lot on the Curve). MMS? Who needs that when most people have email... :( - Mona N.
where's the app market / store - Bob Sonin
Mona: Email is find for sending, but it's a given that everyone expects you to be able to receive MMS. As long as either 1.) the MMS sender is told that I can't get that type of message, or 2.) the MMS gets emailed to me when they use my PHONE number, fine I'll live without it. If you have a job where MMS's are flying around all day, you can't go to your bosses and coworkers and tell them that they can MMS everyone else in the company, but me, they gotta log on and email. - Matthew DeVries
Bwana: I never used a cup holder in a car either before my parents got a 1986 Colt Vista o.O - Matthew DeVries
So is a cup holder "mission critical"? - Bwana
I wouldn't buy a car without one. Unless I it was a Mint 66 Mustang, but no one's allowed to drink in that. - Matthew DeVries
I'm buying stock...Don't tell Alex though, or he'll whine about it. - Geoff Schultz
Ok Matthew....you win.... cup holders don't mean a thing to me. - Bwana
Wow, MMS is used for business? I had no idea, since I've always been in email environments. Now I see where you are coming from. Thank you for taking the time to explain. :) - Mona N.
Bwana: I don't think you can win the internet ;) , and I wasn't taking the piss out of you. It's just a feature I find important, There's a bunch of things I'm like that on. Got a touch of OCD. Oh, and your Patrick Norton impressions rock. - Matthew DeVries
Mona: Sorry if I came of overly aggressive there. I'm still stuck in kind of a Web 1.0 vein where everything erupts into a flame war and it's a sprint to get your point across before the thread turns to spam, porn, hitler, or gets deleted. - Matthew DeVries
If the multi-tasking works, I think this thing will be a giant step in the right direction. It's a pain point on smart phones. Just about all of them stink with multi-tasking. Matthew, I don't even try to impersonate him, it's just my normal voice :) - Bwana
hahahhahah no worries! FriendFeed is one of the few places different ideas are exchanged amicably, and this is definitely not the place where threads turn to spam, porn, hitler, or into the Dark Space. Though a picture of spam+porn+Hitler+bacon combination is known to show up... in LOL cat form. ;) - Mona N.
Do you really think this could finally deserve the name, I PHONE Killer? - RALPH
Competition - perhaps. Killer? No. (at this time) - Mona N.
I guess it's more accurate to say you impersonate his cadence from time to time. - Matthew DeVries
Does the iPhone need killing? I prefer iPhone challenger. If the iPhone is dead, then there's no need for the killer to innovate, and I'm never going to get my damn flying car. - Matthew DeVries
With that type of logic, one cannot disagree. One can say further Matthew that inspiration for the PRE came from Apple in the first place. - RALPH
I agree Mon N... let me change the terminology.. Lets talk about it finally that we have competition. - RALPH
Haven't we established that labeling anything an X-killer is destined to actually kill the thing that is labeled? Think of the halls of recent tech history strewn with the corpses of so-called "iPod-killers" - Victor Ganata
I *love* copy-paste in my Sony Ericsson W830i - Akhmad Fathonih
I've got copy/paste on my nokia 6130. woohoo! - Jason Shultz via twhirl
I for one applaud Apple for showing strong character and not adding this obvious, relatively easy-to-implement, immensely useful feature despite popular demand by loyal fans. - Yaniv Golan

Colby, why not just use the website in Safari or firefox? - Alan Le
Can iPhone apps secure data through the cloud? How would you know if the data transfer is really encrypted or not (a la the little locked padlock on a browser)? - Jared B. Luther
FYI: The iPhone app is not the same as the online interface, it's basically a budget checker. Additionally, it tends to be at least 24 hours behind in the transactions it lists. - Clay Newton
I can confirm that it runs behind by quite a bit. - John Reynolds
I would much prefer a real application instead of needing to keep a browser window open, and that almost goes the same to fluid. - Colby Olson
@Clay - If it is a budget checker and runs behind, what good use does it have in your opinion? I am debating getting it. - Amani

Tech Specs? It looks neat (due to te live stream), but Windows was a no-go! I hope it's Linux-based. - Martin
capacitive or resistive screen? - Dean
@Scobleizer Do you like whatever Palm you saw at #ces09 more than the n95? Either way, there's one major drawback: PalmOS. Nova or not, I haven't seen anything ever from Palm to make me want to even try to get excited. - Matt Albiniak
Betamax=Palm. Will they have the library of Apps to make it sell? - Andrew Leyden
Didn't like the news that it was exclusively through Sprint. I sure hope Obama's DoJ makes a thorough investigation of US cell phone co practices. We've been putting up with anti-consumer stuff from them for too long. - Spidra Webster
For a long time, Palm's weakest spot has been their support. It sucks. Until they improve their customer relations philosophy and stop outsourcing support, I doubt anything is going to change for Palm. - andrei_c
I agree. Poor support was why i left after buying at least half a dozen Palm products. But I wish them well, and this phone looks sweet. - Chris Baskind

if it doesn't have multitouch - its completely useless. People underestimate just what a killer feature this is. Also does it have an app store? Remember the Apple app store adds "killer" social networking features - Anthony Feint
Anthony: It has multitouch, as shown in the Engadget hands-on video. http://www.engadget.com/2009/0... - Ken Sheppardson
I love these Day 1 predictions. They are almost always wrong :) - Bwana
So .. when does pricing come out for this baby? - Chacha - Sick (Literally)
The thing that's killing me here is Engadget says "The keyboard is Centro-esque, with shallow presses and cramped spacing." which is consistent with the photos. I'm a 755p owner and lifelong Palm users, but the Centro-sized keyboard is just utterly useless to me. Sigh. - Ken Sheppardson
Robert is a serial new concept/product fawner. Give him a few days to catch his breathe, read what others say, then I am sure he will have an altered opinion. - Brian Sullivan
you got to be kidding me - mal
Can't wait to see one of these in the real world. The flexibility and openness of the Palm OS puts Apple to shame. Was considering the iTouch to replace my trusty TX, but I'll wait to see if this flies. - Chuck
Completely agree. Can't wait to see it in the wild. Competition ftw - Dean Clark
We have to give Robert a couple of weeks before his true opinion comes out. He gets excited a little too quickly - but that's him. Everything new is the best there ever was ;). - FatOracle (Kamath)
FatOracle: sorry, this one is the real deal. I played with it more this afternoon. I do love new stuff, but this one is worth looking at. - Robert Scoble
not sure about "lot nicer than" iPhone, but at first glance, it looks a lot nicer than the G1 or Storm. wasn't expecting much from Palm, but they have pulled a rabbit from the hat here. - Karim
Karim: if you saw the iPhone next to the Palm Pre, I think you'd agree that the Palm beats it overall except in applications. - Robert Scoble
Robert - I've been reading first hand accounts all over the web, and the general consensus seems the same: everyone was blown away. It's too bad it doesn't translate via images and video for those who haven't physically seen it. I can't wait to see it with my own two eyes. Thank you so much for checking back in to update us! - Mona N.

Mona: I'm uploading more video. Nokia and Microsoft are the losers here. - Robert Scoble
Can the Palm fart yet? - Matthew DeVries
Robert, do you know if Tmobile is going to support the Pre? - Matthew DeVries
I keep hearing the new palm is better, I deal in facts, how, why is it better? - James Ostheimer
@matthew devries I think initially Palm Pre will only be on Sprint. - Rajiv Doshi
OH! You probably missed it, but the FastCompany chat was hilarious! If it's logged and you have time, skim through it. I think it'll make you laugh haha But quickly: Palm. thugs. taking one for the team. LOL - Mona N.
Rajiv, thanks - Matthew DeVries
The Pre might be different, but Palm has historically rolled out devices on multiple carriers within 6mo or so after the initial rollout. For example, most recently the Centro was launched on Sprint in Oct 2007, then rolled out on AT&T in Feb 08 and Verizon in June 2008. - Ken Sheppardson
Ken, let's hope that's the extent of which history will repeat itself. I still have a bad taste in my mouth because of Palm - Bwana
Wow the new handset is really impressive. Not sure about their OS roadmap, will developers follow? *always had a Palm before switching to iPhone* - Paul Papadimitriou via Nambu
Does it sync with outlook out of the box? - Matthew DeVries
"The Palm Pre will gather all of your information from your Exchange account, your Gmail account and your Facebook account and display them in a single, unduplicated format." http://is.gd/eWXA - Ken Sheppardson
Bwana--what was your bad Palm experience? - Rob Michael
Unstable UX on Tungsten W and Treo 600 platforms. - Bwana
Watched robert's movie, still don't get it, looks like the iphone with a keyboard, I have gotten pretty darn good with the iphone keyboard, not sure that tiny thing will help. The scroll not on the screen is kinda cool, but really not such a big deal to me. What else is so great? - James Ostheimer
Bwana: I've lived with a Pilot 1000, Pilot Pro, III, V, VII, m500, 650, and 755p, so I feel your pain RE instability (i.e. random lockups and resets). Good news is this really doesn't sound like just an incremental PalmOS upgrade, so it might be a fresh start/set of expectations. - Ken Sheppardson
James - it's not the formfactor, it's the software and usability. Did you see how the OS multi tasks? - Mona N.
While this may not be the fabled "iPhone Killer"---Judging from the info. @ Palm.com this looks like it will keep Palm in the game. - Rob Michael
I just hope they didn't lay off too many of the minds who came up with the OS. Recall they had another round of layoffs in November (but who didn't). Granted, they did say it was primarily sales & marketing in the announcement, I'm still extremely skeptical. http://www.palminfocenter.com/... - Bwana
Bwana - they just got funding. BRB w/ the link. Back http://news.cnet.com/8301-1035... - Mona N.
Looking forward to seeing if the browser on the Pre is more stable than the iPhone's. - Loren Heiny
Loren - since the whole OS is based on the browser I hope so! - invariant
Boggles the mind, the iPhone got *reamed* for only supporting Web apps. Palm does it and they're embraced. Am I missing something? - Bwana
Bwana: Everyone hates a winner? :p - Chris Charabaruk for Hire

Bwana: revolutionary products change our expectations. - Robert Scoble
+1 Bwana - I was wondering the same thing earlier today. - saeba
I'm not convinced :) I'll have to wait until I can use one myself. - Bwana
Bwana, the difference is that the Palm does not require you to be net connected to use the app. They just use "web technologies" for their API. I still think it's the biggest flaw in the system. They'll never get the games ecosystem that iPhone has without native apps, that's for sure. - invariant
So the multi-tasking is multiple browser windows/tabs? Are you kidding? - Bwana
@invariant it depends on what the API actually gives you the ability to do, let's wait and see, I'll agree with you that it's unlikely given what they have announced that you'll be able to build super rich apps, but who knows what the API allows - Justin Yost
i go by new york's subway. noone has a palm any longer for months ; - ewing2001

Appropriation of successful products = better for us (consumers) - Mona N.
Not an iPhone killer...getting closer, though. Major drawback=no Flash support. What's up with that?? - Charlie Flowers
"When I asked Palm about flash on the Pre, they said it wasn't something they were talking about for now. But Dan Lyons over at Newsweek claims that the phone will run flash on it." - http://is.gd/eVhs - Ken Sheppardson
Why aren't we talking about this as a Blackberry killer? They still do have the market and are a force to be reckoned with. - Bwana
Bwana - BB aren't even close to the realm of an iPhone - at least UI wise. - Mona N.
Charlie: they didn't say no flash support. They said they will talk about that at a future date. - Robert Scoble
Good question Bwana. I think it's about market share vs mind share. Blackberry may have the one but not the other. Also, I think the Pre feels more consumer-y and thus more directly competitive with the iPhone. - invariant
I think this steals more market share from Nokia and Microsoft. I met with RIM's director of marketing today. He isn't too worried. - Robert Scoble
Pre "Pre" it was separated: Business users = BB and "fun" = iPhone. Pre is both. - Mona N.
Blackberry is all about easy email, push, corporate integration, with a server component. Once you're company adopts Blackberry, they're in and you're funneled to the system. iPhone is individual, consumer, more about ux than corporate integration. Palm (particularly with Good.com) was always a direct comp to BB, but never really for iPhone. We'll see. - Ken Sheppardson
Once of the biggest challenges I had with my Treos was enterprise but that was back in 2003 when the 600 hit the market... just saying. - Mona N.
...but Palm never had the corporate sales pitch BB had (i.e. server component except for third party Good or Exchnage) so was never a true BB killer. Pre probably won't change that. Or at least it's not really a new thread to BB directly. - Ken Sheppardson
Mona: Yep. Hasn't really changed much since. Exchange Activesync or Good, but it's sure not smooth unless your Exchange admin buys in. - Ken Sheppardson
That's my thinking Ken. GoodLink was always competing with BB Server in the companies I've been in. I think the Pre will get business users looking at it again. Mona, if you look at the Blackberry Storm commercials now, that's what they're preaching: "Is this a Blackberry?" *plays video, looks at pictures, plays music* Based on the CES Keynote, it looks like Microsoft is pushing the "everyday life" benefits of WinMo. All this means is that we're in for a huge battle royale which can only be good 4 us - Bwana
Ken - definitely agreed. It is no secret RIM has the best exchange/pull system ever. I've owned a BlackBerry for two years straight and only experienced a server side issue once. ONCE. They are hands down, best for business. Unfortunately, the usability factor = mediocre, at best. No more hunting and pecking for me. :) - Mona N.
Bwana - I can imagine scenarios where it might not be good (certain larger players resorting to anti competitive behaviors for example) but hopefully it at least means we get cut and paste on the iPhone :-D. - invariant
Bwana: I really wish Palm had done something with Good rather than letting Motorola snap them up. Seems like that diffused the op a whole lot for Palm. If Palm webOS can really pull off single inbox Exchange/Gmail/Facebook/etc. like they say they can, plus an iPhone or incrementally better UX... well... 2009 should be fun for Palm fans. - Ken Sheppardson
Cut and paste is so irrelevant (to me LOL). Every time I see iPhone + WHERE IS CUT AND PAST it makes me want to smash through my screen like the Incredible Hulk. And I am NOT a violent person. - Mona N.
<whisper> ...I still want Copy & Paste... - Rob Michael
Says you. I sent a big old text today to the wrong person and had to type it all in again. 140 characters is too much for me to want to bother with. - Cyndy
Mona: RE "It is no secret RIM has the best exchange/pull system ever.", I roll with Good on a Treo, and I can't think of any way in which RIM is better. OK... wait... random crashes. Probably fewer on a BB :-/ - Ken Sheppardson
I've actually only ever wanted cut&paste when I get one of those MMS FAIL messages from AT&T. I DO wish iPhone let you receive MMS at least, but it's not too hard to get people to MMS to your email address rather than your phone #. - invariant
I still greatly prefer the iPhone corporate model -- VPN (if required) over wifi or phone network + IMAP. It's sad that companies compete over building connectors between proprietary systems when perfectly good standards predate them by a decade or so. - Dustin Sallings
Imagine Mona during her best incredible HULK ... "Grrrrrrrr ....". LOL. - Amani
