I appreciate twitter for creating a whole new concept. I just think that FriendFeed made a great idea better. Uptime is nice too. - Seth Gottlieb via twhirl
twitter isn't dead because "centralized systems don't work". twitter is dead because it was built in a day, without architectural forsight, as a micropublishing tool, and it was repurposed (by everyone else) as an internet scale Service Bus. The true lesson of twitter is to beware the law of unintended uses. - Chris Hollander
FriendFeed may not be Plan B for you but for many it is. It doesn't have the same function but it does support conversation better than Twitter. The excitement, and attention of the Twitter era has been transplanted to the FriendFeed era. Long ago I surmised that Twitter was in trouble (and even openly suggested that there were serious problems there -- including the people in charge). At least it looked that way from far away. I think it is likely now the the problem is an incompetence throughout the organization (including the top). It seemed though that that was something that was unspeakable, unthinkable by the friends of the organization and so went on for many months without remedy.I believe now that there is nothing for Twitter to do but go away and die. I think you should write off your emotional and economic investment and move on as well. - Brian Sullivan

To me the key feature that makes FriendFeed, and Twitter too, so valuable is that it easily turns people who used to lurk online into active participants in the conversation. I agree with Michael in that I'm not sure that another way of getting content online is where the excitement will be, but how we can engage more interesting people in the dialogue. How can it move more mainstream? - Patrick
Social is far more interesting when it involves people you know, or subjects you're passionate about. People that grow huge networks of "friends" that are not focused directly on either of those points will drown in it. Choose wisely when adding and tracking individuals. - James Clark

Chris makes a great point about Facebook. I wish I was smart like him. - Robert Scoble
Saw it too, and re-used it in my post where I outlined my thoughts on Social Media.. Comparing Facebook to the Russian Railroad not only made me laugh out loud, but also think. Excellent one! - Alexander van Elsas
an alternative explanation could be that facebook caters to the masses instead of the instead of the digerati. You like the tools to be "messy" because you are comfortable with the mess and able to use it to your advantage. This does not make facebook the soviets. they are just listening to mass market instead of only focusing on early adapters and heavy users, and hence more likely to succeed. - berkay
berkay: hint: the open web has a LOT more users than Facebook. I don't know where you got the idea that a walled garden is bigger than the open Web, but it's a wrong idea. - Robert Scoble
@berkay I think the Soviet (actually Russian) part of the analogy by Chis was related to the fact that Facebook uses proprietary software and walled gardens to try to remain important. Instead of the alternative of being open from launch. It has brought them success, but it has also brought them their very own innovators dilemma. They can't open up anymore like others will, it's just not in their business model or genes. - Alexander van Elsas
Of course Google operates a walled garden too, but it covers the ENTIRE web and beyond ;-) - Alexander van Elsas
i like how his "nanny state" href points to facebook.com lol - Wolfsbayne
My problem is that Facebook is like a hall full of booths at a tradeshow. Everybody sets up their booth in hope that people will stop by. And to interact, you have to go to each others' booths. FriendFeed is like the big party where everybody is mingling, or at least the Q&A in a breakout session, - Bill Bittner
It's a great analogy with regards to the train tracks - but please don't extend it too far. The USSR collapsed because of debt and opening up too quicky - not because of communism. Read my comment on Chris's blog. - Elias Bizannes via twhirl
Elias: oh, I don't know about that. Seems to me they had deep problems even before they collapsed. I had a few Russian friends back in the late 1970s who told me about how few goods their stores had and how long they had to wait in line to buy them. - Robert Scoble
the analogy doesn't work for me... web communities aren't nation states. I'm with berkay on this one. Yes, facebook may only have a slice of the overall webs population, but I think it has the *right* slice- the demographic that has the most sustainable long term usage patterns of the web. - Chris Hollander
College students. - Robert Scoble
Or even better, drunk college students. - Robert Scoble
Messina's analogy is right because of the 'train tracks' - setting the standard helps protect you. But saying Facebook is like the USSR and therefore will collapse is the wrong angle; instead we should extend the analogy to mean that opening up too fast (like what happened to poor Gorbachev) will create collapse. As I point out in Messina's post, openness is like the free market, but these closed systems need to adopt their own type of openess like how China did, for them to eventually get on the same system (the open web) - Elias Bizannes via twhirl
Elias: I like it better if it said that Facebook is like the Soviet Union, stay there and you'll have to wait in line to buy your toilet paper. - Robert Scoble
Scoble: I'll agree to that as long MySpace gets to be the USA. In your face, marketing-heavy, and arrogant enough to they will always be number one as the other social networks like China and India overtake :P - Elias Bizannes via twhirl
for some reason I think of Facebook as "built around me" while Twitter or Friendfeed is "built around others/my friends". I prefer the latter - Sebastian Keil via twhirl
"You do the math..." Okay I have. And it tells me that Facebook hasn't had any problems with "adoption, gaining and maintaining [developer] interest and in stoking distribution." - mrshl

Robert: I bet some use of other services APIs that provide XMPP and sms will do the trick, the base thing is already here :) - directeur
i think XMPP or at least some sort of IM service is very important in a "2.0" service. SMS not so much. i don't really like that, but then again i don't have a qwerty phone so thats probably why - Tyler Gillies
Excellent comment. Top-notch production from his brain. - Here's... possible248!
Tyler: there are millions of people who can only communicate with other people via SMS or voice. Think about that market. And, yes, Grazr sucks and we all knew it because none of us were using it, but I was trying to explain why we weren't using it so they could improve and eventually have the same problems that Twitter's having right now. - Robert Scoble
A very simple, clear and (IMHO) accurate reflection on whats going on over at Twitter... after trying to launch a Unified Communications platform for 2 years with almost no take up, having too many users is definitely preferable - Peter Cattell
@robert good point. what do you mean some people can only communicate via SMS? meaning they're on their phone the majority of the time? Don't phones support IM? - Tyler Gillies
Seems obvious to me, but a different perspective nonetheless. Systems are supposed to be built with the user in mind. This includes adoption as well as load and performance. His comment highlights a golden principle: proper planning definitely helps with implementing a system, but contingency plans are even more important for unexpected issues. From my comfy chair, it seems like Twitter had very little contingency in mind from the outset. My $0.02. - Bwana McCall
Tyler: Series 60 Nokia phones suck for Web usage. You really need to sit next to a teenager who texts all the time. There are hundreds of millions of people who have series 60 phones. You think the millions who get a new phone every month in China are getting Blackberries or iPhones? Um, no. - Robert Scoble
I land on Grazr frontpage and what do I see, this post at the top of the list :) Maybe soon, the page will start moving! - AKs
wow robert, w/ friends like you etc... the guy leaves a thoughtful comment on the difference between launching a startup & building for scale re: twitter & you leverage that into a rant about the shortcomings of his company's offering - his comment was excellent - i'm all for constructive criticism, but why did he deserve your backhanded compliment howitzer pointed at him like that? - mike "glemak" dunn
Bwana: Twitter's team is the first to admit that now. They had four developers, none of whom had built a system with serious loads before. Now they have a different team with different skills and they'll solve the problem. If they fix it before a legitimate competitor comes along and does it better then they'll be just fine. Who could compete with Twitter? FriendFeed. Microsoft? Google? Facebook? But the only one I see users getting even somewhat excited about as a Twitter competitor is FriendFeed. - Robert Scoble
@Tyler: Not everywhere... Here I don't have IM in my phone and noone does :( See? I'm not american or european, or asian... - directeur
problem is that FriendFeed's founders, on Gillmor Gang on Friday, said they had no interest in cloning Twitter's features. So, Twitter is safe until someone like Microsoft or Google figure it out. - Robert Scoble
And if they were interested or planned to do you think they would have told you? - Brian Sullivan
"Twitter is safe until someone like Microsoft or Google figure it out" ? Isn't Jaiku almost the same thing? - directeur
@brian, probably - Tyler Gillies
>why did he deserve your backhanded compliment howitzer pointed at him like that? Because I think other entrepreneurs can learn from him about why he didn't get what he wanted, which was clearly a successful business. He can learn from it too. - Robert Scoble
Directeur: >Isn't Jaiku almost the same thing? Very close. But their UI and experience sucks. It's slow, and not easy to use like FF is. - Robert Scoble
Robert, the real competitor to Twitter would be one that is able to absorb it's user base. Jaiku and Pownce have the features, but not the community. I don't think it'll take a huge player like Microsoft or Google to do that. Who could have predicted Twitter's impact from a side project at Odeo? :) I'm still taking the position that FriendFeed currently compliments Twitter and I don't think it could replace it. I do believe Jaiku and Pownce are going to benefit from months of fail whale. - Bwana McCall
Robert: By UI, you mean their web-UI ? (I like it myself :) ) but aren't you mostly using twitter with IM? - directeur
@robert i think jaikus UI is sexy, it could stand to be faster though, and maybe have DM. but hey its still sleeping. When android comes out, i think it will be a different story. - Tyler Gillies
Scoble, What kind of cam is that in your pic? My guess is a XHA1, G1... - Anthony
Anthony: that's a Sony. I forget the model number. We're now using Panasonics. - Robert Scoble
thanks for the reply, appreciate it...I asked you on your blog as well, so ignore that...any reason you prefer the sony/panasonic...i ask cux i am now using an XHa1 wit a fixed lens - Anthony
Bwana: Thanks! I just remembered to delete my Pownce account ;-) - directeur
Robert, after reading the post, I'm perplexed by your decision to title the post in such a misleading way, the post isn't about the great twitter architecture comment it's about you ripping Grazr to shreds. I'm sure you're points are valid, but it seems bad form to mislabel your own post so egregiously. What were your intentions? - Jennifer Van Grove
Jennifer: the whole point is that the market already ripped Grazr to shreds. The CTO admitted such and said that he'd rather have Twitter's problems than a perfect architecture. I was trying to help the CTO out by letting him know why his service didn't take off. - Robert Scoble
Jennifer, I updated the post to make it clearer about the value I saw in his comment, and why it got me to write two rants. - Robert Scoble
This goes back to the write for the mainstream or write for the early adopters discussion. If there are only 1 in 100,000,000 weirdos like Robert, Michael and me (or so he says), then FriendFeed, please ignore Robert and do the right things you're already doing. - Louis Gray
Louis you really need to listen to the Gillmor Gang on Friday. In there I explain that I love FriendFeed the way it is. But I've been showing it to tons of "normal" people. They tell me they hate the UI, and lots of other things. My requests come straight out of what people are telling me they'd like to do with FriendFeed. If FriendFeed did what I keep passing along from them they'd get a lot more users. - Robert Scoble
Point three on the FriendFeed rant is one thing that really bothers me, yet at the same time, I like the ability to comment and see other comments on a post. So basically, I don't know what I think. :) - Jeremy Kunz
We're still very much in the process of exploring our "problem space" to find the compelling experience. I also want to clarify, it's not that we have no users, we have users (especially for our free widget) it's just not on the growth curve we'd hoped for. I actually appreciate all the feedback, even if it's things we were mostly aware of, it's still good to have them listed out. Fixing the issues Robert pointed out, though, still is no guarantee that users will find Grazr more compelling. - Michael Kowalchik
