"This week we turned our attention to a rather timely battle being waged on the mobile front, between Apple’s still wildly-selling iPhone platform and Google’s (Google) slower to boil Android (Android) mobile operating system. Apparently the latter has been gaining some ground, resulting in our first unexpected upset victory in the Faceoff series. … Google Android is the winning platform by a more than 2:1 margin. Out of 5045 total votes, Android walked away with 3323 of them or 66%, while the iPhone platform only netted 1494 or 30%. The tie vote included 228 or 5% who just couldn’t choose between them. Many people cited the openness of the platform and third-party development process as well as Android’s versatility, being able to be put to use not just on phones but also netbooks, tablet devices, eReaders and more." - LANjackal from Bookmarklet

Orange will ban Non-Orange Internet based streaming services on the iPhone. (Spotify, UStream…surely not YouTube?) - http://thenextweb.com/europe...
Orange will ban Non-Orange Internet based streaming services on the iPhone. (Spotify, UStream…surely not YouTube?)
it's not like anyone's gonna bother using it, eh zee? - James Cox from IM
it's ridiculous. How do they expect to compete? - Zee.
Precisely Zee. O2 must be ever so pleased. - Roberto Bonini
well they won't, obviously. it's just newbies getting into the net neutrality debate. they're going to get lynched - James Cox from IM
anyhow, it's all good- this has to mean that getting unlocked phones will be easier… so then running it on t-mobile uk will be much simpler, especially given that it is such a better network - James Cox from IM
But Zee, consider. Do newbies even know that non-orange streaming services exist (apart from youtube)?? - Roberto Bonini
+1 James. @Roberto honestly, I'd say YouTube and Spotify are enough to be pissed off about - Zee.
Agreed Zee. I dislike restrictions in all its forms. I'd steer well clear of Orange on principle alone. - Roberto Bonini
The strain on the O2 network, at least in London, is palpable. Most people chalk it up to increased data usage driven primarily by iPhone. The hope was that with Vodafone and Orange in the game that things would settle as the usage flattened across the services. Looks like that’s less likely to happen, now that Orange is providing a sub-optimal user experience. This kind of “protectionism” feels a lot like the music industry, before it got burned. - George Nimeh
when i switched to tmo about 5 years ago, i was told during the sales pitch that tmo were investing a million pounds a month on their data infrastructure, to build for the future they knew was coming. i believed them- and still do; in areas they've got 3g, the data rate has been pretty decent and continues to be. It also makes sense: when money was cheap, they upgraded their network. now money is expensive, it's impossible to invest. So don't expect anything to change for a while! - James Cox from IM
"Not to be used for other activities (eg using your handset as a modem, non-Orange internet based streaming services, voice or video over the internet, instant messaging, peer to peer file sharing, non-Orange internet based video)." Why does it remind me of this? http://www.youtube.com/watch... - John Craft
Although I agree with what's being said, I think this is just the old T's & C's for Orange Internet services pre the iPhone. They will change them or not enforce them. That being said, Orange is actually the worst uk network in my view and the 750mb limit just goes to show they really do not understand this marketplace. Personally I think that Vodafone will be the network of choice for the uk come Feb when they start selling it. And I for one will be porting over as soon as I can. - Keith Bennett from BuddyFeed
@James, I've tried an iPhone on tmob uk and it's not as good a service as O2 tbh. All the networks upgraded in recent times to build proper 3g services. In my experience, Vodafone is by far the best for any Internet service. - Keith Bennett from BuddyFeed
I wonder if twisting o2's arm may get me a slight reduction. - Roberto Bonini from iPhone
it's always worth ringing o2 and asking what could be done with your plan to get a small reduction - they do it. I keep meaning to leave them but then i check the other tarifs and deals at other providers and realise I am on a pretty good deal... sim only :) - Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)

"The inability to recognize the new smartphone audience is another one of Microsoft’s flaws, Rubin said. Microsoft’s mobile OS history is rooted in personal digital assistants, which were marketed toward enterprise audiences. Today, the smartphone has shifted into the mainstream as a consumer device, and yet Windows Mobile is still largely focused on enterprise features." - LANjackal from Bookmarklet
Blackberry still is focused on enterprise too, so I don't think that's it. They did, however, fail to bring any new features to the table. The biggest problem with a Microsoft phone? Mobile browsing! - Eric @ CS Techcast
The green spreadsheet in the graphic sure does look appealing enough for me to buy one smartphone (windows mobile). - TrafficBug
@Eric Blackberry sells 80% of its smartphones for consumers, most Windows Mobile phones are also sold to consumers, not enterprise, so it's not the case. Default browsers are crap for both platforms, and third-party browsers make browsing experience decent, so it's not the case as well. The difference between Blackberry and Windows Mobile is that Blackberry is tightly-integrated solution with RIM controlling hardware, software and services ecosystem. - Pavlo Zahozhenko
Blackberry had better image, not having it's image bashed constantly. Also the price for decent entry level devices keep dropping down to acceptable. Can't say the same with Windows Phones. - Natsuki Seika

"What makes IE9’s implementation of hardware-acceleration so compelling is that it has major real-world benefits and its completely transparent to both end-user and developers. Using the new capabilities in Direct2D instead of GDI, IE9 is able to rendering all the visual elements of websites much faster and smoother. One example of where this really shines is in the Bing Maps demo where continuously panning the map is just as smooth as navigating a map in a 3D strategy game. During a meeting with IE program manager Dean Hachamovitch, he explained that this feature isn’t already implemented in any other mainstream browser today is because it’s by no means an easy feat to accomplish. At least one issue he pointed out was the fact that there may be other components inside a frame that handles its own rendering, like Adobe Flash for example." - LANjackal from Bookmarklet

Not sure why the Sharp Zaurus and Nokia 770, N8x0, N900 had such small niche markets and yet people are so quick to jump on the Google bandwagon. "people are so quick to jump on the Google bandwagon." There's good reason for that: 1) FLOSS 2) Availability from multiple OEMs/carriers 3) Flexibility. Google's huge support for open, neutral networks has made them a huge positive influence in the traditionally closed mobile arena. Those are all things neither Apple nor any other competitor offer. The Easy Way Out is still the iPhone, but that's what Apple's always been about anyway. - LANjackal from IM
But Google isn't giving FLOSS for free. When I watch an Android phone hit my servers, I see "Googlebot" in my server logs. When I use Gmail, I see ads pertaining to my current mail keywords. I used Gmail to get IMAP fetches for my other accounts, I no longer do. I don't want Google indexing and storing my private emails.
