"GPS giant Garmin is actively seeking Android developers in the Kansas City area. They are looking for people with a passion for improving user experiences who want to create cool navigation and location-based apps.  Among the “essentials” are the ability to develop software in C, C++, C#, Java, and other languages." - LANjackal from Bookmarklet

"Widespread adoption of Android could lead it to become what Windows was for the PC world, an operating system that can be licensed on any underlying hardware and ensure that a variety of applications run on the machines. There will be room for other players in this multibillion-dollar device market, of course, but for the most part, the computer makers have already settled on Android." - LANjackal from Bookmarklet

"The World Wide Web Consortium has published a draft of an interface that browsers can use to manipulate files better, one of a series of steps aimed at gradually improving the sophistication and polish of Web site interfaces. The draft File API (application programming interface) defines a number of ways that browsers and Web sites can handle files better. One big part of it: being able to select multiple files for upload, such as on photo-sharing sites or Web-based e-mail, a task that often relies on Adobe Systems' Flash today." - LANjackal from Bookmarklet
Another wanted standard could be controlling the order of images loaded on a page with priority assigned to each, and instructing the browser to only download images below a certain size threshold... - TrafficBug

"I think that a Verizon iPhone is still possible (remember that Verizon's misfit toy ad is slamming AT&T's network and not the iPhone). Yet, I don't think it will happen until Apple produces a hybrid GSM/CDMA phone or adopts LTE technology (Canada's Telus did something similar with an HSPA device). Otherwise, I think it's unlikely that Apple would produce a CDMA-only version, even for America's largest carrier. I could be wrong, but I'm not going to believe any rumors about a Verizon iPhone until I hear something from Apple and Verizon. And similarly, I'm not going to believe anything about AT&T's exclusivity until I hear it from AT&T." - LANjackal from Bookmarklet

Business people and consumers looking for one electronic device that can take care of all their needs have false hopes, according to researchers at Intel Corp. But scientists at Intel's research facility in Pittsburgh say they do expect that personal devices will one day become ... well, much more lovable. - polou/indigo_bow from Bookmarklet

Twitter sure is a rollercoaster, but going up or down?
I hope it goes down to the firey flames of hell...but srsly, it is the most idiotic fad I have ever seen on the web, maybe anywhere. Won't miss it when it's gone in 2 years. - Maxamad

"The contribution of news content to Google's (GOOG 582.58, +0.23, +0.04%) massive search advertising business is generally thought to be minimal. That's because advertisements placed alongside a search for news stories don't generally create the same commercial opportunities as those done for a specific product or service, for example. Conversely, news sites such as News Corp.'s online version of The Wall Street Journal depend heavily on Google's popularity. According to data from Experian Hitwise, Google regularly accounts for more than 25% of WSJ.com's Internet traffic. Still, news is a key element of Google's "franchise," analysts say. And a defection of news providers could therefore dent its public image." - LANjackal from Bookmarklet

I think the main point of this one is the 1st pie chart above: for developers concerned about "fragmentation", all you have to do is ensure your app works on HTC & Motorola devices & you've got 95% of the market. Eventually other OEMs in the remaining 5% will get the point and conform - LANjackal from Bookmarklet

Editor’s note: Today, being a news junkie requires not just the ability to keep up with hundreds of breaking stories a day, but the ability to redistribute those stories to your followers and news sites. To get some insight into the modern news junkie, we asked Mrinal Desai to share with us how he screens the news in the guest post below. Desai is the co-founder of CrossLoop, but some of you may recognize him more from Twitter or Techmeme, where he tips stories every day—580 of those tips have appeared as headlines since the beginning of this year. - polou/indigo_bow from Bookmarklet
