Daryl, when a dev firm can't make more than 21 dollars a day, for each day they worked on the project there's something clearly wrong with the culture on the AppStore.
- Joshua Schnell
Also, the argument isn't about liking the free apps. It's about developers not being able to develop for a platform because it doesn't nearly pay out enough to employ themselves. If we keep expecting free apps from developers, the developers are eventually going to leave the iPhone behind because they can't afford to sustain themselves financially.
- Joshua Schnell
They're not going to elaborate because they are merely reading the title and not reading the story. Daryl didn't read the story either it appears.
- Tamar Weinberg
Here are some snippets for the lazy (cough Daryl/Will/Shey cough): "When a development firm such as blacksmith games puts together an entire month worth of free downloads for the iPhone community, and the community can’t turn around and support the developer by purchasing a $1.99 application in the appstore, something’s clearly rotten in the state of the AppStore."
- Tamar Weinberg
Actually, I did read the article. But I'll forgive your snarky comment. :). Reading the article doesn't automatically mean I'm going to agree. Cuz I don't.
- Shey, Jamaican of FF
"A dollar ninety-nine for a mobile game is a steal no matter how awesome or crappy a game is, and the fact that a development firm tosses out a tweet that says, “if 5% of the daily appvent visitors would buy plushed i would be happy” reveals a pretty grotesque commentary on iPhone users and their purchasing tendencies."
- Tamar Weinberg
Then why just a "no"? Maybe you can add a little more? Surely it's not that difficult...
- Tamar Weinberg
In the middle of typing a response... if you guys could just give me a minute...
- Shey, Jamaican of FF
Might've been a good idea to say that before the "no." I know it's FF culture not to read articles but only to comment on titles - so apologies if I was misjudging you there, but based on Daryl's comment, it's evident that at least one person didn't read it.
- Tamar Weinberg
First of all -- products and services should be aimed at filling market needs. If you focus on that, you'll succeed. Secondly, if people want to download crappy free apps that are easy to find and that makes them happy, guess what? NEED SOLVED. If there is a market for people who want an app that does more and are willing to pay for it and you can fill that need --- NEED SOLVED. If there isn't a market for it, then don't complain about it -- create a better product or fill another need.
- Shey, Jamaican of FF
Shey, fair points, but it's not an issue of a "better product" when the culture of free makes "better products" harder to sell.
- Tamar Weinberg
Thirdly, it isn't the customer's fault that your development costs are too high.
- Shey, Jamaican of FF
No, it's not. But this isn't that abnormal for this market. I bet development costs are high for every decent game in the app store.
- Tamar Weinberg
The bottom line is that the culture shift has made it impossible for GOOD products to sell. Look at this article from TUAW: http://www.tuaw.com/2009...
- Tamar Weinberg
@Tamar I totally get the damaging effects of "the culture of free". That culture will always be around, so you can a) fight it and reduce your share of the market or b) embrace it, and yes, competition will increase, but so will the overall iPhone share and your share of that share. Get it :)
- Shey, Jamaican of FF
It's a shame to have really great products that can't sell. But in the end, if no one is willing to pay for it -- competition or not -- that's all that matters.
- Shey, Jamaican of FF
I understand that. I also think Josh's argument is very valid. If App store apps had to cost money, it wouldn't always be around. Embracing it in a competitive market with over 100k games is damn hard. TUAW says it nicely, "Everyone is still working to unlock success in the App Store, but with over 100,000 products on the shelves, it has become increasingly more difficult for the good apps to stand apart."
- Tamar Weinberg
People would be more willing to pay for it if there weren't so many free games in the app store. I personally am guilty of it. I won't buy games because there are free apps that can consume my time, even if the games rock.
- Tamar Weinberg
@Tamar Then I think the problem is not with the free apps. The problem is with the iTunes' capability of showcasing good apps through social/recommendation engines.
- Shey, Jamaican of FF
@Tamar I agree there -- but you won't get anywhere close to 100% conversion. And when others find out that apps are no longer free -- they'll just go to another platform, like Android, and all iPhone devs will lose.
- Shey, Jamaican of FF
The App Store needs Amazon's ability to produce recommendations based on what you've downloaded (and from other people who have downloaded what you've downloaded). Right now, it's these big pools of apps that aren't really, in any way, differentiated from each other except by title and icon and very loose definitions. 'New and Noteworthy' and 'What's Hot' don't really tell me ANYTHING...

- Akiva Moskovitz
Shey, maybe social recommendation engines work, but I'm not seeing the power in those that I'm engaged in. I'm also not looking at 100% conversion, but some conversion that translates to decent sales would be nice. And personally, I think it's close-minded and stupid for developers to only focus on the iPhone market. I personally am not going to buy an iPhone. I'll keep my iPod touch and get an Android phone. If only developers would flock to the Android platform.
- Tamar Weinberg
Woah, I jump in the shower and come back to a boat load of comments... catching up... responses to follow. ;)
- Joshua Schnell
Akiva, there are recommendations, but I personally used them 1% of the time. There's a "Customers Also Bought" section on the bottom of each app's page though, but it's not very popular.
- Tamar Weinberg
I think this can all be summed up with "Free != Best Option". If we stop categorizing things as Free and Not Free we might actually get better recommendations, and find applications that can provide us with the greatest marginal utility. I'd love to see the analytics on the amount of users who just go straight to the free section of the store.
- Joshua Schnell
Akiva, I completely agree with the recommendation engine needing serious work. I've commented on it a number of times on the site, primarily here: http://su.pr/1TfAHz and here: http://su.pr/1I0Exv Apple really needs to rework the system. They're long overdue, and need to start embracing social media technologies.

On a tangent, Blacksmith Games sound like they were operating inefficiently, art, story, and level design can be done in parrallel, at least for a small portion of the time. I just took a look at my phone. My ratio of paid to free apps is currently at 4:1. In my case, "the culture of free" isn't an issue.

Jimminy, those are excellent point, but what about the barrier of entry in to a market? If the barrier is so high that new comers can't compete, or even break even, won't developers give up on the system? It worries me that innovative applications might not make it to the device because a developer can't afford to develop for the iphone. Blacksmith Games was just an example, but they're surely not the exception to the rule.

Cecily, that's awesome. How funny would it be if Apple released that ratio. I'd probably be shamed publicly. ;) I think the problem is across the board. I know i'm guilty of looking for a free option first. Why pay 10.00 for omnifocus's app, when I can get something for free.

Omnifocus is only $10 now? When I bought it it was $20. I don't want to see free apps go away totally, but what I would like to see is more free, ad-supported versions of apps that exist alongside the paid versions. Though I suppose if your goal wasn't to support all browsers back to IE6, but just modern browsers, then you could build a specialized service that depends on WebSockets very soon. Clearly something a Google or Yahoo couldn't do, but maybe something a startup would do to innovate quickly with cutting edge functionality. Honestly, if I just wanted to build a fun and functional site for a small tech-savvy demographic, I wouldn't shy away from requiring modern browser capabilities.

Fair enough, but to be clear, we're talking about *all* IE's, up through 8. I.e. (no pun intended) 70-ish % of clients. IE 9 TBD, unfortunately.

I think application programmers should get together and join a "bleeding edge" consortium that agrees to freely implement the latest web standards and require the latest technology to access it. As is, sites are reluctant to deny access to users with legacy tech because they know those users will jump ship to the competing site. If all the competing sites in one space (social media, news, etc) all made the requirement at once, they may actually begin to make a dent in new browser version adoption.

"Too much UV penetrating the skin (too pale-skinned under intense sunlight) increases Vitamin D but reduces folate. Lack of folate causes neural tube defects in the fetus, causing such congenital abnormalities as craniorachischisis, anencephalus, and spina bifida, leading to many miscarriages. On the other hand, too little UV penetrating the skin (too dark-skinned under dim sunlight) increases folate but reduces vitamin D. Lack of vitamin D causes skeletal neonatal abnormalities (skull, chest, and leg malformations), rickets being the best known. Again, this causes miscarriages. And so, humans adapt very quickly to solar UV. Prehistoric groups that migrated towards the equator got darker. Prehistoric groups that migrated away from the equator got lighter. But this explanation fails for Europe. Northern Europeans are lighter than everyone to the south (Mediterraneans), to the east (Mongols and east-Asians), to the west (Native Americans across the Atlantic), and to the North (Inuit,...

@LANjackal Android OS supports multitouch on capacitive touchscreens, so it is possible to develop multitouch-aware apps. However, the absence of multitouch in DROID is a legal issue, so multitouch apps might not be available in the U.S. Android Market due to the same reason. With such restriction developers may think twice before using multitouch in their apps... This legal stuff slows down the evolution of Android apps ecosystem.

"A new study of mobile device usage has found that the iPod touch is gaining in share, and suggests that the media player could eventually transition youth to the iPhone. Mobile analysis firm Flurry this week released its latest Smartphone Industry Pulse report for November 2009. From June to November, the number of mobile device "sessions" by users grew from under 150 million to nearly 400 million. In that same frame, the share of usage for the iPod touch grew from 31 percent to 35 percent, as the iPhone shrunk from 57 percent to 50 percent." - Spidra Webster
@Spidra, there are some minor differences - particularly first gen Touch, but essentially they're the same
- winckel
Richard was saying apps are only for the iPhone...
- Spidra Webster
there are some, though I must say using a Touch, I haven't found many at all. I've something over a hundred apps - the only one I'd like but can't use (no mic) is Shazam
- winckel
No, what I was saying is that app developers force you to update the os. and in some cases if you've got a first gen ipod touch as I do then you get tired of apps no longer being coded for it. As a result you slowly give up on the Iphone and ipod touch devices as a result.
- Richard A.
maybe later. not yet tho. good potential but i dont believe it can beat iphone overall. i agree w/ the article.
- ugurarcan
think apple better then google? this like microsoft and linux, yeah
- Странник
The momentum behind the iPhone is the key. There's so many people behind the iPhone now, better technology can't affect it (and Apple does a good job of keeping the product competitive). Android would be wise to provide a simple solution for porting of iPhone apps. They need the apps.
- ·[▪_▪]·
i think this is a little beyond apple vs. google. i agree above, its the momentum behind it. its quite possible droid has many more advantages but as of today also has a lottt to catch up and iphone isnt slowing either.
- ugurarcan

I love the droid keyboard. Once you get used to it, you can't stop the urge to open up the hw keyboard for every single typing task. It's awesome.
- Berk D. Demir
I was tempted to buy my first iPhone. I decided to wait for the new iPhone so the current is only $100. Now I will research Android too. As you can see I really don't need either so I will just wait.

"The inability to recognize the new smartphone audience is another one of Microsoft’s flaws, Rubin said. Microsoft’s mobile OS history is rooted in personal digital assistants, which were marketed toward enterprise audiences. Today, the smartphone has shifted into the mainstream as a consumer device, and yet Windows Mobile is still largely focused on enterprise features."
- LANjackal
from Bookmarklet
Blackberry still is focused on enterprise too, so I don't think that's it. They did, however, fail to bring any new features to the table. The biggest problem with a Microsoft phone? Mobile browsing!
- Eric @ CSTechcast.com
The green spreadsheet in the graphic sure does look appealing enough for me to buy one smartphone (windows mobile).
- TrafficBug
@Eric Blackberry sells 80% of its smartphones for consumers, most Windows Mobile phones are also sold to consumers, not enterprise, so it's not the case. Default browsers are crap for both platforms, and third-party browsers make browsing experience decent, so it's not the case as well. The difference between Blackberry and Windows Mobile is that Blackberry is tightly-integrated solution with RIM controlling hardware, software and services ecosystem.
- Pavlo Zahozhenko
Blackberry had better image, not having it's image bashed constantly. Also the price for decent entry level devices keep dropping down to acceptable. Can't say the same with Windows Phones.
- Natsuki Seika
Well, my old-timer PPC xv6700, clocked from 300 to 5XXMHz, was doing a hell of a good job on a modded version of Windows Mobile 6 with that Mozilla browser, with J2ME capability, Opera was amazing to run on it, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, stylus... I miss those PDA days I had...
- ElijahBailey-Zu of FF <0,
And as Eric @ CS Techcast said, it missed something that wasn't that appealing to mainstream users. People in 2004 that were using those beginner smartphones were obviously business related. Or the geek watching DivX movies on it by wireless, oh, got a call ;p
- ElijahBailey-Zu of FF <0,
""It looks like the Ubuntu developers consider GIMP to be too powerful for a normal desktop user. They are removing it from the upcoming Ubuntu 10.04. Among the reasons cited are that the UI is too complex, it takes up room on the disc, and 'desktop users just want to edit photos and they can do that in F-Spot.''""

GIMP's UI is not very good, but F-Spot is #@#@%$, I always remove it! I would like to have something like Irfanview for Linux (gThumb is a possible solution).

so, m$-novell-mono(poly) is spreading like a cancer on the *ubuntu distro
- ovigia
the solution for that peace of crap called f-spot is digikam and gwenview
- ovigia
Thats total BS... If they are worried about it they should include (better) documentation not "dumb down" the distro. What (over complicated thing) are they going to ditch next gedit? or the terminal?
- J. Abdul-Qahhar
It's only an apt-get install away, right?
- ⓞnor
from Android
Just because gimp will not be part of ubuntu, there are other ways of getting it for Ubuntu via extra and third party repositories.
- imabonehead
I guess its not total BS... I mean if it helps to get the disto out in to the mainstream that will be cool. I just wonder if it marks the beginning of a "slippery slope"
- J. Abdul-Qahhar
If you need GIMP, just 'sudo apt-get install gimp'. So.. what's the problem?
- Pavlo Zahozhenko
"I used to think Ubuntu was destined to lead Linux into the mainstream, but now it's looking much more like Google--not Canonical--will be the first Linux vendor to truly challenge Microsoft."

And this challenge won't arise on the desktop, but on smartphones and netbooks.
- Pavlo Zahozhenko
It's quality not quantity that counts! Oops, er, OK, neither quality nor quantity are important!
- winckel
:) the quality is ridiculous! I've tested a bunch of those apps and read reviews/descriptions for all of them. The only app I liked was Palringo (possibly the best multi-protocol IM client for Winmobile). Other half-decent apps were Bing, Windows Live, Microsoft My Phone and AP News. All of the rest were miserable, to say it mildly. It was a nontrivial task to make Marketplace even worse than Ovi Store (I'd thought it was next to impossible), but somehow Microsoft managed to do it!
- Pavlo Zahozhenko
"From the marketing collaterals that have leaked, it is practically certain that the Blackberry 9700 will be named Curve 2. If you remember the Blackberry 85xx was the initial Curve. But then isn't the Blackberry 8900 the Curve 2? Apparently not... it's not a big deal, but that makes it just a little more confusing. If anything, Blackberry could have called the 8900 Curve 2 and the 9700 the Curve 3G... oh wait, someone else has been using something this."

The pictures, soon to be published in the journal Physical Review B, show the detailed images of a single carbon atom's electron cloud, taken by Ukrainian researchers at the Kharkov Institute for Physics and Technology in Kharkov, Ukraine. This is the first time scientists have been able to see an atom's internal structure directly. Since the early 1980s, researchers have been able to map out a material's atomic structure in a mathematical sense, using imaging techniques.

I think this is pretty much old hat. Whatever the merits or demerits of the Russian government and whether you're for or against things as they stand in Russia, there seems little doubt that Russia doesn't treat Ukraine as a third party state to be dealt with on an arms-length basis. Perhaps it stems from this - to my mind - odd concept of the "near abroad" or perhaps it's just a hangover from communist colonialism. What's sure, is that Ukraine needs to tread carefully
- winckel
Ukraine is very politically and economically unstable at the moment, Russia is trying to capitalize on this .
- Pavlo Zahozhenko
I fear you're right. I'm not sure Ukraine will even start to realize its potential until it becomes more internally stable with a stronger sense of homogeneous nationhood and removes foreign troops (tactfully, polititely but firmly) from its soil.

My new application: WHENDIDYOUJOINFRIENDFEED? Do you want to know when have you posted to FriendFeed for first time? I'm using FF for 397 days, what is yours? - http://whendidyoujoinfriendfeed.com/#
(if it crashes, just use F5) We can find approximately when did you start posting to FriendFeed for you. Just sign in this application using your FriendFeed account and learn how many days ago you've started to FF! Try it now.

- Niklas Pivic
MIne says 0 days. Which I know is far from the truth as well.
- Ruud van Wijngaarden
Guys we're looking for first entry you've posted manually from FF, not imported from twitter, last.fm etc. It works for many people. ::interesting:: @Ruud it must be a bug, I'm checking out.
- Alp
Okay. I wish it would show (or someone would develop an app that shows) when I actually joined the service. This should be called "When Did You First Post to FriendFeed", then, since that's what it shows. It doesn't show when you joined FriendFeed.
- Rochelle
It says I joined today. Which is completely wrong, even with your definition of the app's functionality. My first manual FF post was definitely not today.
