Bees are frigging cool. I adore bees. This makes me sad :( Also, I'm a flaming hippy. - Bec Rowe
@Rah: Because some of us like honey, most of us hate when species become endangered or extinct, and bees have apparently been dying all over the place. http://tinyurl.com/5awg93 - MiɳiMagɘ (Sexy Scimitar)
@Rah - bees aren't bad, especially honeybees... they are really good for the environment. Africanized bees though (the "Killer bees") are bad because they don't help pollenate like the other do and they actively kill the good bees as well. I'd be sad if they weren't the africanized ones, because they were good-guys otherwise. - Lindsay Donaghe
This is just all sorts of crazy! - Mathew Ballard
Linday, Rah, also honey-bees have been disappearing in North America recently very mysteriously and they are crucial for fruit and other farmers for cross-pollination and the environment too. http://news.nationalgeographic... - Kamath ॐ
Didn't know bees were endangered. That sucks. I like honey as much as the next guy. I'm nowhere near a hippy, though. I know the bees would have had no problems with stinging me to death...LOL - ♫ Rahsheen™
Yeah, I don't think this guy had much of a choice. - Kamath ॐ
@Kamith I don't think he knew what exactly was under there. There are people who will happily, MORE than happily, come and relocate hives. - Bec Rowe
Yeah, I probably would have done the same thing, not realizing what could really be in there. Never heard of hive relocation, either. - ♫ Rahsheen™
WOW!!! They move fast those bees! That's so freaky! Though, I would have called someone..then he wouldn't have had to kill all those bees. - Anna Lynn M.
if he had no idea there was that many bees in there, i'm sure he would have called someone. - Anika Malone
Holly Crap!!! That was a very clever way of taking care of it though. - David Cook

"According to the system, the United States had launched five missiles, which were rapidly heading into Soviet territory. The U.S.S.R. was under attack. All Petrov had to do was push the flashing red button on the desk in front of him, and the Soviets would retaliate with their own battery of missiles, launching a full-scale nuclear war. "For 15 seconds, we were in a state of shock," he told The Washington Post. "We needed to understand, what's next?" Though the bunker atmosphere was chaotic, Petrov, who had trained as a scientist, took the time to analyze the data carefully before making his decision." - Barak B via Bookmarklet

"In 1973, NASA launched Skylab, the first American space station, where three crews successively lived and worked for more than 171 days. Knowing a call to the fire department would accomplish precious little from outer space, NASA and Honeywell Inc. developed an alarm system that would alert the station’s crew to smoke or fire. Today, of course, such alarms are found in 90 percent of U.S. homes." - Barak B via Bookmarklet

"If you start thinking about our faulty perceptions, the first thing you realize is that markets are not perfectly efficient, people are not always good guardians of their own self-interest and there might be limited circumstances when government could usefully slant the decision-making architecture (see “Nudge” by Thaler and Cass Sunstein for proposals). But the second thing you realize is that government officials are probably going to be even worse perceivers of reality than private business types. Their information feedback mechanism is more limited, and, being deeply politicized, they’re even more likely to filter inconvenient facts." - Barak B via Bookmarklet

"Wolfing down meals may be enough to nearly double a person's risk of being overweight, Japanese research suggests. Osaka University scientists looked at the eating habits of 3,000 people and reported their findings in the British Medical Journal. Problems in signalling systems which tell the body when to stop eating may be partly responsible, said a UK nutrition expert. He said deliberately slowing down at mealtimes might impact on weight." - RAPatton via Bookmarklet

I've learned to scarf since having kids. Someday I'll get to enjoy meals again. - Heather Solos
The body doesn't signal it's full up until about 20 mins after you've eaten. SO if you eat real quick, it's easier to overeat on a bigger meal, and a dessert, than if you eat slowly. It's easier said than done when you're really hungry though. I've had a bad habit of wolfing my food down since I was a kid. The only reason I rarely eat dessert is that I don't have a sweet tooth. - Ian May
I am slooooooowwww when eating. (Explains a lot, I think.) - Jared Smith
i have to conciously remind myself to slow down. i'm definitely a scarfer, particularly when eating alone. i've noticed that when i slow down, i eat less. that's partly why i like tapas bars. while i'm waiting for stuff to come out, i'm eating slowly. i'm savoring. in the end, i don't eat nearly as much and i feel just as satisfied. - tiffany
I'm old fashioned in that I always like to eat the main meal of the day together at the table. Time to mull over the day's events too. That tends to make one eat a litlte slower. - Ian May

"Storytelling is one of the few human traits that are truly universal across culture and through all of known history. Anthropologists find evidence of folktales everywhere in ancient cultures, written in Sanskrit, Latin, Greek, Chinese, Egyptian and Sumerian. People in societies of all types weave narratives, from oral storytellers in hunter-gatherer tribes to the millions of writers churning out books, television shows and movies. And when a characteristic behavior shows up in so many different societies, researchers pay attention: its roots may tell us something about our evolutionary past. To study storytelling, scientists must first define what constitutes a story, and that can prove tricky. Because there are so many diverse forms, scholars often define story structure, known as narrative, by explaining what it is not." - Jason Toney via Bookmarklet

Umm these guys are doing it for food and it will feed lots and lots of people. These are people killing animals to survive, not to profit. For the western world to frown on this is entirely hypercritical, as unpleasant as it may seem. My comments likely to spark a discussion ;) - Toby Graham
but aren't these whales endangered? - Zee. Just Zee.
Toby; what is your idea about whale hunting in Japan. they are also poor? we can find better and more sustainable source of protein. if we kill wild animal for human consumption they will vanish form this world soon .!!! - Mahdi Ebrahimi
some data, accidentally went into my phone camera just few minutes ago http://www.flickr.com/photos/s... - silpol
I think these people literally survive on just whales which makes it very different from Japan, who I believe, hunt whales for Scientific purposes! Don't get me started on that! (saw a TV programme about these people and they're pretty boned because of over hunting) - Toby Graham
Toby, in my mind, I understand people gotta do what they gotta do to stay alive. In my heart, the practice and pics above bother me. I think I'm conflicted, but if you want to say hypercritical, that's cool. @slipol, I don't eat meat. - Anna Haro
If you don't eat meat you can be conflicted rather than hypercritical :) - Toby Graham
There are still tribes that basically survive on 1-2 whales per year for the whole community. - klecu
I eat meat, but not whale meat... cows aren't endangered, as far as I know. - Jemm
I have no problems with eating meat, I just draw the line at meat from animals that reach a certain level of consciousness. Everything else is fair game - and to any veggies that try to "make me see the error of my ways", may I point out the ultimate irony of life is that for it to continue, another must die. And that we are discovering plants to be FAR more alive than we ever gave them credit, just do some research into plant neurobiology and social studies and you'll realise they're on a par with animals. - alphaxion
There's one tribe in Alaska or Canada that has a big ceremony, then they row out in their boat to find a whale, and when they're ready for the kill, they don't pull out a spear but grab a .50 caliber rifle and shoot it. Guess it isn't all that authentic... - Andrew Leyden
