"500 Days of Summer" was OK, but I really loved reading @ebertchicago applauding those who omit the parentheses. http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps...

I'm still changing "downplayed" to "played down," but that strikes me as a "Mad Men"-era bugaboo.
Remember when colleges had football teams and basketball teams? Now they have "programs."
Does everything have to "launch"? Nothing "starts" or "begins" anymore?

@trudishaffer I remember a long ago children's book about Tracy Austin, in which young Tracy defeats the legendary Christ Evert.
@waynema I think it'll usually be clear when it's "replaced by" and when it's "replaced with." Do you have an example that seems tricky?
"A simple majority of 51 percent." Um, no.
@dmargulis It's a little thing, but I like to preserve the distinction between the profession and the role. This lawyer is my attorney.
@dmargulis Attorney? You mean lawyer :-). I'm pretty sure there's a basis in *law* between a killing that's a murder and one that isn't.
@dmargulis Yes, there is common usage and there is journalistic precision. And the words "killing," "slaying" and "homicide" are available.
@dmargulis There's a continuum of writing, but journalism has to go with legal . Your "murder" victim may have been killed in self-defense.
@dmargulis You can scream bloody murder, read murder mysteries and hear of "murders" on TV, but precise writers don't misuse the legal term.
@dmargulis Coroners don't distinguish justifiable vs. murder vs. manslaughter. They do homicide vs. suicide vs. accident vs. natural causes.
Murders are homicides that result in murder convictions. The deaths in FBI statistics and such are, for lack of a better term, "homicides."
Yes, I still draw a distinction between a laptop computer and a laptop. Don't come crying to me when your grandson busts your new Sony Vaio.
If I know Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner and Blitzen, how on Earth would I not recall the most famous reindeer of all?
