Bwana
I'm laughing at all the geekazoids drooling over the Google phone. They reaaaaalllly want it to be good LOL
I'm excited because it's the first really nifty phone that won't cause me to have to change providers. That, for me, is worth getting excited over! - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
It need to be good.. The iPhone needs competition. :] - Gadiel Rivera
Gadiel, agreed. I'm more excited over the Blackberry Storm personally - Bwana
I like the design of the storm...it just looks hot but the OS on the other Blackberry's is just meh...Is the Storm gonna use a new OS or something? - Gadiel Rivera
It has a real keyboard, and there is no crazy Apple restrictions on apps. Plus, i'm willing to bet that it has features like copy/paste. - Jason Shultz from twhirl
Wow, you can't use corporate email with it, and a Google account is required to use it http://tmonews.com/2008... - Bwana
Gadiel, many are speculating the storm to use a totally revamped OS. I guess we'll have to wait and see - Bwana
Honestly, this, to me, looks like the same wave of hype that happens when something tech-oriented gets really big and popular: everyone loves it for awhile but then they begin to cheer for any underdog that comes along and attempts to dethrone it. Otherwise, we'd never see exuberant '*-killer' articles every couple of weeks. It's more underdogism. - Akiva Moskovitz
There will be corporate email available on the G1, iPhone didn't come with it out of the box either. I can get DRM free music from Amazon directly from the phone as well. - Jason Shultz from twhirl
"Gmail account required to sign in and use, no corporate access email available." So does that mean no general POP/IMAP? Only Gmail? - Bwana
@Bwana Yes but my hope is all on the 3rd party Apps that will surely fill all the missing features. - Gadiel Rivera
I imagine it'll be available through a downloadable app like they did to get corporate email on the iPhone. - Jason Shultz from twhirl
What downloadble app provided corporate email to the iPhone? - Bwana
No tethering on the G1 according to http://www.slashgear.com/t-mobil... - Bwana
I agree with Tina. I am mostly excited because it will be offered on my provider. I can't stand AT&T so the iPhone was a wash for me anyway. And I'm a Google fan so having to have a Google account is no biggie for me (I use Google Apps for domains for my personal stuff anyway). And $179 is a pretty dang good price for the feature set! - Lindsay is :)
Lindsay, I'm hearing rumors that existing platform customers upgrading an existing phone may pay less than the 179 price point. My fingers AND toes are crossed =D - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
It doesn't matter if this particular phone is good or not. That's not the point. This is the first in a long line of devices that will run Android. Like the move from Prodigy Online and AOL to the open internet, this is the breakout of cell phones and other small electronic devices from closed systems. - Mark Radigan
Understood Mark, but lack of desktop sync is going to deter those who don't want their data in the cloud. If the platform is moving in that direction, it may be a slow adoption rate. Also, how in the heck could they forget a 3.5mm headphone jack on the G1?!?! - Bwana
Yeah, agree. No 3.5mm? That's just silly. - Mark Radigan
I'll wait until Android is on a phone that isn't fugly - Rodfather
No 3.5. No exchange. No-go. - Brandon McCall
They forgot the 3.5mm jack the same way Apple forgot to include a memory card slot, and 3G in their 1st gen, and a keyboard, and a replaceable battery, and true 3rd party development... can't you Apple lovers just leave this thing alone for a day? We always have to sit through the damn Apple events. - Tim Hoeck
Tim, no one sits through anything. People have been complaining about those things on the iPhone since the day it was announced. You can't expect people to pick apart the iPhone's failings and the demand them not pick apart a competitor's failings. - Akiva Moskovitz
I hope Sony makes a handset with Android on it. - Rodfather
To be honest Android as a software platform seems really rough to me. However, so was the Atari ST community in the 80s and it was extremely awesome. So, in that regard, I will be following the news about practical Android use closely. - Phil Glockner
Lack of 3.5mm is the only omission that seems silly to me. The rest of the limitations are acceptable. If it had stereo bluetooth, I'd *kind of* understand, but they are severely limiting their appeal to music lovers. I'm talking about the G1, not Android. Contrary to what you may think Tim, if any phone has flaws, I will point them out. (I love Nokia and I constantly rip them apart) - Bwana
I believe you Bwana :) I think they goofed this launch.. but my excitement is for an Android device being made available.. I won't switch to T-Mobile to get this, so I am hoping for higher-quality, feature improved phones soon, on other providers. - Tim Hoeck
I'm completely open to purchasing a HTC touch phone and installing Android (perhaps the Fuze.) Chrome browser mobile will also be outstanding... - Czar
Let's see: I don't use my phone for music so the jack isn't a real issue for me. Data in the cloud isn't too much an issue IMO since I can use gears to back GDocs up to my PC. And since I'm already w/ TMobile: the order has been officially placed for my G1. - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
The big reason why I would like A2DP on a smartphone is not especially for music.. bluetooth stereo quality is sort of crap.. but so that I can listen to program and game sound effects in the headset instead of the speaker. - Phil Glockner
So, Bwana, are you laughing at the "geekazoids" because you bought an iPhone? Do you see the irony? :-) - Sir Slippy of Slippington
so a friend of mine who works at Google showed me his brand spanking new G1 and it's a lot more handsome in person. The screen slide motion is very satisfying and the keyboard, while not superlative, isn't bad. Android seems to work smoothly and I heard that POP/IMAP is available in a separate app. Data in the cloud is fine by me. I'll wait till it (read: Android) is on a good 3G network (read: Sprint) and has Exchange, then I'll probably make the jump (hehe, I almost convinced myself to jump to T-Mob). - Chieze Okoye
Slippy, I also bought a Blackberry, and a Nokia E61 so no, I don't see the irony - Bwana
