This is a dollar bill taped to the floor of FriendFeed's headquarters. It's a bit of social engineering. They figured out it kept people from tripping on the cord cover because people noticed the money on the floor.
- Robert Scoble
The dollar bill trick doesn’t work with strippers though ;)
- Tony C
@Earl: Consider it a stripper-filter, then. You know someone's a stripper if they trip over it.
- April Buchheit
for some reason i expect a "stripper filter" to be something coded using regular expressions. sad, i know.
- Karim
The message here is that Web 2.0 companies are so ignorant of money and revenue that they even step over a dollar on the floor
- Jason Carreira
from twhirl
Interesting. The photo has been viewed more than 500 times, but has only earned 62 likes and 19 comments. So, for every 1 thing we can see here there's another 9 people hanging out lurking in the shadows.
- Robert Scoble
@Scoble the old 90-9-1 rule :) (well almost)
- Naor Mark
You could always just superglue some road kill to those things. Nothing gets people's attention more than a dead opossum.
- Andrew Leyden
Heath And Safety in the UK would not approve....but I do!
- Toby Graham
"but has only earned 62 likes". This currently stands as the most-liked Flickr photo of all time.
- Raphael, Raphael
I forgot about that photo. It does work, though. Everytime I visit friendfeed's offices I see the dollar and I'm careful not to trip over it. :-)
- Robert Scoble
That's dumb. Why couldn't they afford to run the cord somewhere where it wouldn't be in the way in the first place?
- Robert Peña
As an IE I can state that's definitely not something to publicize. Definitely not OSHA Kosher.
- Adi
Reminds me of the deli counter in grocery store in Scotts Valley across the street from NorCal offices of MetaCreations (the Fractal Design arm of it). Local companies'd go there for lunch daily. PROBLEM: Deli counter pencils (for marking your sandwich menu) disappeared at frightful rate. SOLUTION: Deli affixed pencils with price label. Price: $100.00. Pencils stayed at store. :)
- Susan A. Kitchens
Haha I like that trick for keeping Pens from going missing Susan!
- Garin Kilpatrick
I like tweetdeck for monitoring multiple streams but everything is too big, requires so much space. twhirl is a little rough around the edges but everything works the way it should. url shortening plus analytics API key and access to multiple twitter accounts + friendfeed + laconica + seesmic + ping.fm? Wow. Twhirl has the upper hand.
- Glenn Batuyong
Glenn, the observation I made in the post: as a Twitter client, Tweetdeck rocks, but for multiple service support, no contest it's Twhirl. I'm running Tweetdeck now, but I may switch back. It's really a hard call
- Duncan Riley
until Tweetdeck can let you change the font size it is a no go plus I don't know why but AIR apps for Twitter all want to open links as a text file in notepad - that makes no sense
- Steven Hodson
I prefer the Tweetdeck interface but use Twhirl because of support for multiple Twitter accounts, FriendFeed, etc.
- Herb Hernandez
Steven, Im a reformed Windows user as you know, but I'd guess there's a file association issue somewhere in the Windows settings. You should be able to tell we it opens somewhere there
- Duncan Riley
very weird .. for the past while I have had the link problem but now I just tested with both again and it works fine <shrug>
- Steven Hodson
I have used both and I have switched to TweerDeck full time
- Rob Cairns
Duncan, I've gone back and forth forever for some of the same reasons. I'm pretty sure I'm staying with Tweetdeck this time (each time it grows on me a bit more). FF on Twhirl kinda sucks, and I'm not using Seesmic at all these days, so the multi-service utility just evaporated over time.
- Jennifer Van Grove
Jennifer, my issue as well. I'm not using the sub-services on Twhirl, particulary not FF because it does suck in Twhirl. Still, I'd like multi-account and Ping.fm support in Tweetdeck, what make it a killer.
- Duncan Riley
The last time I used twhirl it didn't support groups. Until it does I'll continue to use Tweetdeck.
- Keith - @tsudo
Louis, I think it's ahead as a Twitter client, but it misses stuff. Like play a sound on a @reply or DM only. Or simply an archive option. But in everything else directly Twitter related, yes. cleaner, more friendly. If I wanted something more, Twhirl still wins.Reality is besides multiple account support, I didn't use Twhirl for other services (I had them there, but didn't actually use them)
- Duncan Riley
Having used Twhirl for some time, I found Tweetdeck to be a breath of fresh air, as it makes it easier to track different conversations. I don't feel the need to aggregate everything into one app either, especially if separate apps serve my needs better.
- Sam
i'm with tweetdeck. it's changed how i use twitter and has made it a lot easier to scan
- Snipergirl
from Alert Thingy
i like tweetdeck but it takes too much estate. i would love twhirl adding groups and different window colours for groups/search/account
- Ouriel Ohayon
Hate way Twhirl scrolls one story at a time rather than smoothly - makes it unusable on small screens because you can't ever read the whole entry!
- Rich
DestroyTwitter: more compact than TweetDeck, less annoying interface than Twhirl.
- Ian Betteridge
DestroyTwitter can put lots of information in its clean interface without looking cluttered, I like Tweetdeck but it only shows a few tweets at the same time
- João Almeida
I use both! Tweetdeck for catchup first thing in the morning using the groups (pals group for instance), and then twhirl thereafter during day. Tweetdeck hogs a fair of memory I found out to my cost.
- bairnpunter
from twhirl
i use neither - i use the twitter.com site
- Allen Stern
DestroyTwitter is brilliant, and gets better with every update. A very nice clean interface.
- Chris Nixon
I love TweetDeck, but I'd love it even more if I could have columns stacked on top of each other, as well as miniaturizing columns temporarily (instead of having to delete and later recreate them).
- Chris, Taskerrific Guy
I'm stuck with twirl because it supports multiple accounts and that's the only reason. If I had my druthers, and it added a few features, I'd use twitterific, or destroy twitter if they supported multiple accounts.
- Rick Powell
Tweetdeck is unbeatable when your monitoring evens like the plane crash yesterday, but for casual tweet monitoring, and tweeting.. Twhirl is hard to beat. And I just figured out that you can change the theme of twhirl to black as well. Only thing I don't like about tweetdeck is how it's capable of slowing down my brand new macbook pro, withs 2 gigs of memory. If that wasn't an issue, I'd be running it constantly and not switching between Twhirl and Twitterific
- Sebastiaan van den Akker
I love tweetdeck, mostly for the grouping and column layout, but have been making an effort to use the new twhirl so i can get integration into FF,Linkedin and FB (via ping.fm). If only tweetdeck would have that integration i would stick with that..
- John McBride
from twhirl
Anybody using the destroy twitter app? Do you like it?
- John McBride
from twhirl
While I have a spare monitor (actually, a spare laptop) available I'll be using TweetDeck. But if screen estate is ever an issue, I'd switch to Twhirl.
- Jalada
I like DestroyTwitter because it's very clean and reliable. I had lots of trouble with Twhirl here at work. I also really like the "away" button, which makes it easier to see what's happened when I go away from my desk for a while. Also, DT is very customizable, allowing for either a "wide" view or standard narrow view, and the popup notifications are very nice.
- Alex Conner
I'm with Tweetdeck. What will really be amazing is Tweetdeck as an iPhone app ---- AND, if that syncs lists with the desktop Tweetdeck.
- Sonya Smith
What turned me off about Tweetdeck: no keyboard shortcuts.
- Sean McBride
I just started using both Tweetdeck and Twhirl, and both have advantages and disadvantages. I use the former for its groups and to check my replies. The latter posts to http://ping.fm/ and allows me to follow FriendFeed. Before this I was using TwitterFox which I just found irritating. In my browser I use, TwitBar, PowerTwitter and TwitKit. @seanmcbride the keyboard shortcuts in Twhirl are nowhere near complete, but these are an advantage over Tweetdeck. Running both = running into the API rate limiting.
- Daniel W. Crompton
I have an example of how I monitor one corporate Twitter account and handle other info using both Twhirl and TweetDeck. http://www.flickr.com/photos... (with notes)
- Glenn Batuyong
I just discovered the first issue with both, memory leaks. They have been running for a couple of days each and are both over 300Mb. Tsk, tsk, tsk...
- Daniel W. Crompton
@Jeff Haven't used twhirl long enough to notice it also has a memory leaks like tweetdeck. Maybe it's an issue with the air framework
- Sebastiaan van den Akker
Twhirl & Laconica Bar for identi.ca, TweetDeck for twitter, Firefox for FriendFeed. Did I mention my PC runs out of memory?
- Markus Merz
from Disqus
I'm one of the few people that really dislikes TweetDeck. Tried it many times. My biggest problem with it, no shortcut keys. I'm a keyboard nav person.
- tomit
Here in England, we couldn't guess what a Hockey Mom was. Is she in the opposing team?
- pazzer1
Does McCain's arm represent the glass ceiling she refers to? ;)
- Jonathon
In England they might call them a football mum. It's referring to a mother that's involved with her kids sports. Which in the case of Sarah Palin, is Hockey.
- Alex Scoble
Nope. We have no football mums, soccer moms, hockey moms, etc. We call 'em the "Chelsea Tractor Brigade"
- Slappy Line
Hehe, well there you go...whatever you call them, you still have them.
- Alex Scoble
awesome... now i need to read the entire PhD archive to see what i've been missing!

Good reason to say the university career track goodbye. Kissing up to people is just not worth it.
- Meryn Stol
Meryn: I was just too pig-headed (or socially unaware) to fall into this trap. :-) I just speak my mind... but I loved the picture.
- Mitchell Tsai
Mitchell: The problem is that the picture is true in many cases... And I believe you should go right past these people. Everyone can make it alone. You don't need "them".
- Meryn Stol
Meryn: Team-building is powerful though. Sometimes it's good to work with people I don't get along with very well. How does a popular management saying go..."when the storm comes, if everyone's views are too much in the same vein, the whole group/company will topple". And some visionary people like Steve Jobs are renowned control-freaks...

1. Threaded responses 2. Real time updates 3. embeddable video and images, must I go on?
- Mona Nomura
and.. being able to talk to Leo.. before the rest of his army shows up. heh
- Daynah
Mona, it really deserves the praise from you, just checked it out. Interesting if we will finally decide to actually migrate instead of playing with it for a week.
- Svetlana Gladkova
Mona: how do you integrate images or videos? just insert the code?
- Nir Ben Yona
from twhirl
Nope, just the link! @Svetlana, I can't find you!
- Mona Nomura
Friendfeed is so old skool. Time to move on.

Svetlana: Indeed! ER: is rejaw/spin, you?
- Mona Nomura
Hum...kinda like a tumblr/twitter/friendfeed combo?
- leigh himel
I haz it ,, and Im following your bacon trails
- johnpiercy
So I played wit it and it's much like pownce to me. You can add photos and videos. But this has autoupdate so as you start to read something the page refreshes and it slides away. Also I have to click a link to see what comments people have made on a link. I will grant you it's better than twitter but not that much better. Still as long as you all add you feeds back here then we can all play where we want.
- John Cooper
@hao thaks for the bookmarklet ,, work nicely
- johnpiercy
http://rejaw.com/scobleizer but I'm not there, FriendFeed is still my favorite community. I'm getting bored with new social things. We're headed to Berlin next week to get a look at the latest in Consumer Electronics. Toys we can't afford due to crappy economy. Oh well. Maybe I should rejaw. :-)
- Robert Scoble
EPIC FAIL: my wife was trying to sell using Flickr (among other services) as part of her Government Departments 2.0 strategy today. She was told that they can't use Flickr because the faces in the pictures posted will be cut and pasted into porn sites
Not to mention that Flickr explicitly forbids usage for commercial purposes. Many accounts have been deleted without warning for violating Flickr's Terms of Service.
- Ole Begemann
My response "You visit some weird porn sites! can you give us some examples of this" then after a silence of 30 seconds "it is just an urban myth, that does not happen. Why are you worried about your photo being on the internet? Have you got a secret life or a dark past?
- Nick Cowie
I'm taking suggestions for an official, unofficial procrastination mascot. My entry, a lemur. Do you guys have one? On second thought, just send it to me tomorrow....
- Bwana ☠
from email
Wow. In 20 minutes it has been decided?? That is so NOT procrastinating...
- Lisa L. Seifert
Is this guy even awake? Oh, maybe he's just "resting his eyes" like my grandma is always doing
- Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
Well his name is Larry... he's not the official, unofficial mascot however....I'll wait until next week to get a final decision.. maybe next month...
- Bwana ☠
I'd push you to act on it Bwana, but.. you know.. that seems like a lot of work.
- Mark Trapp
Phew. Thank goodness. Cuz I wasn't even going to think about nominating a mascot until at least next week.
- Lisa L. Seifert
But Jason, lemurs are jumping around and stuff instead of doing what they are supposed to be doing, which is finishing the next chapter of their e-book.
- Kevin Bondelli
as long as it remains a lemur and not a lemeur :)
- Loic Le Meur
@ Loic - HA! Please help us spread the word, when you know, you get around to it!
- michael sean wright
I am eagerly anticipating Loic giving Larry the Lazy Lemur a shout-out on Seesmic.
- Kevin Bondelli
Larry is thinking about going to the store for some bacon... aww too much effort will wait for bacon to come to Larry.
- michael sean wright
I super-like this. It's quite amazing to see that large mass of people in front of Barack Obama.
- Rishabh Mishra (p248)
Reuters is reporting 200k came to the speech.
- Rex Hammock
from twhirl
@Ranjit, sorry, but that was a rather stupid comment, +1 to what Michael said
- Gina Häußge
if @Ranjit's point is that it's great to see how far humankind has come in terms of racial/ethnic equality, then I agree. But regardless, kind of an insensitive way to put it.
- graham mudd
Hitler identified with the Germanic people, Stalin identified with the Russian people. to me all such definitions are kind of stupid, what with us being 5% removed from the chimpanzee. but such people have always tried to establish boundaries and a monolithic identity within such boundaries. a picture/event like this puts a lie to such separations. i wish people, like Hitler, could see how far the future is from the "truth" they saw
- Ranjit Mathoda
graham, i don't think people have come that far in terms of racial/ethnic equality if they are still defining separate races/ethnic groups. i do think we are happy being mostly nicer to people of "other" groups, but that's not quite the same. check out an online dating site and see how many people prefer to date people of a particular group.
- Ranjit Mathoda
Throughout the speech there are jabs at the Germans. I'm surprised they were still clapping when he mentioned "Never Again!".... in Darfur.
- Sam Pullara
Amazing. looking at it in larger view, and THEN in original view. The reduced views don't cut it at all.
- Susan A. Kitchens
Susan is right. Amazing photo and love all the digital cameras.
- Robert Scoble
great photo, and EVERYONE was taking a picture of Obama.
- Baard @ Pixum
The laptop guy is amazing! Great picture. Funny to see most people looking at the screens of their camera's and not straight at the stage
- Peter van Teeseling
it would be really cool if those 100000 + people uploaded their photos into Photosynth :)
- Jeff (the マクダジ of FF)
I would like to think that these politicians feel humble when they stand before a sea of humanity. I hope they remember that they are supposed to be working for our greater good. I can't imagine standing where he's standing.

Absolutely! A Photosynth database of that event would be awesome!

@Shawn: If all of us Americans had speechwriters like Obama, we could make it look like we were as passionate about our global image as he does ;-)
- Kirk Kittell
@Rex Hammock: Yeppers, i was there and the officials said, that about 250.000 people were there. It was really a very awesome event, hey - 250.000 people came to the Berliner Siegessäule and Barack Obama isn't even yet the next president :-). Don't know what happens after the elections ;-)

Man, the brush-lipped Fuhrer is finally gone...this is a sign.

It's just so sad. People really want to believe. But Politics is just a dirty game. There's probably no genuine saviour out there.

It was more like people were awaiting a 'rock star' ;-)

Hmmm. This might epitomize the uncomfortable juxtaposition of "Like" and morbid headlines. I am sure Paul was merely approving of the journalism rather than celebrating the demise of helpless penguins. :)

It's a good list. Bookmarked it. On the other hand, the one I thought was a gag all this time, that Cyndy blogged about could be considered 'as interesting' http://www.profy.com/2008...
- Charlie Anzman
@Orli: Absolutely welcome, it really is a great job.
- Svetlana Gladkova
@Charlie: Yes, this one is definitely the most controversial thing Playboy could cause in the technology world. And this post of Cyndy's has resulted in at least 3 conversations here on FF :)

I was hoping for a Legends of the Hidden Temple style challenge; Olmec tells you: "You could start by becoming a Robert Scoble sycophant, then by smashing the clay pots to find the key, then write a blog post about Steve Gillmor, which will unlock the room to the shrine of the silver monkey! The choices are yours and yours alone!" http://video.google.com/videopl...

Man Louis, you're making meeting my goals really hard!

Good thing he already added me on Twitter. :)

I've considered, just for the fun of it, adding this as a feature on SocialToo - what do you think??? ;-)
- Jesse Stay
#1 Humorous post. #2 When you refer to "gender", you should refer to "assumed gender", as - for some Twitterers / Friendfeeders - there is no way to tell for sure (not immediately, at least) who is hiding behind some user names / avatars. #3 As a matter of basic human principle, segregation should be banned, be it linked to gender, age, nationality, religion, language, sexual preference, health etc.
- Pierre-Philippe Martin
Even when I'm working (planning the IEA 2008 enneagram conference http://friendfeed.com/e... before my white-water rafting trip...and running late. Should have left Yosemite 1 hr ago), it's cool to take a break & surf pictures for 15-30 min! FriendFeed can be a productivity sink (but a fun one...)
- Mitchell Tsai
Igor, please don't post irrelevant links on my posts =\
- Mona Nomura
...and Maid Cafes are a disgrace to my race. That sub culture is creepy
- Mona Nomura
Dubai is going to be a big draw... all great beauty comes out of great corruption... renaissance Italy is no exception. we still should keep after them for the cultural tyranny that is against free expression. beautiful though and so is the maid cafe Igor. Also Mona N. you are kind of hot... what is the corruption behind you? Igor is irrelevant here... but I can weave it right back into the conversation. the beauty of friends is we allow that.
- Noah David Simon
Noah I think for Mona being she grew up as a Japanese American it is a bit hard to deal with some of the Japanese culture! We all have prejudices against certain behavior! I can rant about Russia even though I only lived there for 9 years as a young boy! Mona Japanese culture is every where! I would not be surprised if you will see some Maid Cafes in USA!
- Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
Oh and sorry for the link, but I figured people around you are interested in Japanese culture whatever the shades or colors of it are! Let's show different aspects of what Japan is!
- Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
er... um I disagree Igor. love ya buddy... but the mere fact we are talking about it means we are putting the gears on to import it. still ur right in saying the difference is huge between the variable-american and the variable. I think Israelis are a total different people from me, but I still back their asses up because they are family. er back to dubai. nice looking waterfalls. you should see the ones in NY
- Noah David Simon
Noah: We'll see re: Dubai. But from what I'm reading, it seems as tho many have lost as opposed to gained. As for the irrelevant link thing, I'll address Igor myself :) And thank you for the compliment ;)
- Mona Nomura
Igor: 1. I do not see any reason for that link to be presented in this Dubai thread. The only thing I can think of is shameless self promotion. Diverse conversations with digressive tendencies are indeed great but let's be honest with ourselves. Was that link to the maid cafe video posted on your blog really appropriate for this thread? Honestly, not once did anyone bring up Japan... Maid cafes and Dubai correlate as much as apples and like... gorillas. Yes gorillas, not even oranges.
- Mona Nomura
2. You know nothing about me, my back ground, my family, and upbringing. Thus it's quite inappropriate to speak for me based upon what you think I am about, no?
- Mona Nomura
btw, question 2 = rhetorical. meaning no answers/response needed. thank you and have a pleasant day :)
- Mona Nomura
People amaze me every day. The same day that I went to work and did some things. This guys went and came up with that. Stunning, amazing, humans are truly an interesting bunch!

@Mona Have you tried the "Moderate Comments" option to delete off-topic comments? It's under "More", option #3. P.S. Beautiful fountains! Look what I miss when I'm away from FriendFeed...
- Mitchell Tsai
I don't think that Dubai is a real estate disaster at all!! It is total scifi. Envisioning utopia, they are creating a dystopia. It's life imitating art.

Speaking of addiction, is it a bad sign that, when I see "...plays scrobbled on Last.fm" I actually end up reading plays SCOBLED on Last.fm?
- Bradley McSpinn
Spinn: I do that too. I always have to look twice to make sure I'm reading it right.

"Sleeping at an airport overnight, once almost a sport for the young and short of cash, has become a lot more common lately, affecting even older and professional travelers. And a big reason is that airlines are no longer as free with complimentary hotel vouchers as they once were."
- RAPatton
from Bookmarklet
I've been sleeping in airports for years (but never in this much style). The website http://sleepinginairports.net mentioned in the article is a fun one I've used for years. It's very helpful for finding quietest and most comfortable spots. Although some spots (like the 4 free massage chairs downstairs in Tokyo's NRT) disappear. :-(
- Mitchell Tsai
Often I sleep in the airport even if given a free hotel voucher. Why? I lose about 3 hours sleep going in/out of security, traveling to the hotel, etc... and I have the stress of a missed hotel-wake-up-call or missed shuttle or unexpected super-long security-line.
- Mitchell Tsai
My husband, the toddler and I got stuck in Atlanta for 28 hours last year. It was an absolute nightmare. After that I decided I would never fly on Delta or into Atlanta ever again.
- Michelle Martinez
Michelle. Delta is my least-favorite US airline. It stinks in coach...
- Mitchell Tsai
Continental is my favorite for food. However, American gives a higher upgrade percentage (~95-98%). Continental has dropped to 50-60% for me, and may be next-to-impossible on SFO-EWR or LAX-EWR routes.
- Mitchell Tsai
Heh, and Atlanta is my most disliked airport. I can't get anywhere near that airport without being stuck there for a lot longer than I anticipated. Last time I went through there it was in the middle of summer and the air conditioning was out. Everyone was being baked like we were in a tin oven, it was terrible.
- Robert DeBord
Mitchell, I totally agree. I always flew them when I was in the Army because they were cheap. There is a reason why they are cheap, though.
- Michelle Martinez
