Indeed, Brent. - WoH: Minding her Botts from iPhone
Bret Taylor
You can now get a daily or weekly email digest for anybody's feed on FriendFeed. You'll get a daily or weekly email with the most popular posts from that person's feed. To get the email, click the "Email/IM" link at the top of anyone's feed, and select the "Best of day" or "Best of week" email option.
Picture 11.png
You can see all of your email settings at http://friendfeed.com/setting... - Bret Taylor
Thanks Bret! :) - Matt Ruiz
Thanks to Kevin for doing a great design for what turned out to be a more complex set of UI options than we had originally anticipated, and thanks to Tudor for implementing the email backend. - Bret Taylor
Great! Thanks! Love FF! - Scott Monaco
I now get the FriendFeed Feedback posts as a Best of Day email so it doesn't fill up my feed, but I don't miss feedback. I also set up a "Best of Day" email for my "Technology people" friend list so I get a pretty good overview of tech news every day via email. - Bret Taylor
This is a really cool idea Bret, I wish you can make that an RSS feed option as well. I'd be much more likely to read summaries in RSS than in email. - manielse (Mark Nielsen)
Lovely. Thanks guys. - Mitchell Tsai
Casey: Thanks for the tip. What's the 7 before the "?" mean in the URL? The number of likes or replies needed to be included? - manielse (Mark Nielsen)
this is killer, the random influx of email during the day was kinda getting fail-ish. I love the daily digest. - Drew Lucas
Very cool! Any way to get archives of previous months? (especially helpful for those of us who leave the internet for weeks at a time...) - Mitchell Tsai
WOW. that's really helpful! - K.D.
Looks like a great addition for those who are not embedded on the site. Nice intro. - Louis Gray
Cool! - Josh Haley
Just curious - at what time of the day will we get these emails ? Midnight US-Time, or will it respect our timezones ? - Ahsan Ali
Ahsan: it is somewhat random right now when the emails are sent, but we built in the backend capability to control what time they are sent, and we plan on exposing that control to users in the future. Right now, it is kind of random - sorry! - Bret Taylor
Thanks Bret - Ahsan Ali
Cool! can i get a daily or weekly email digest for the "Saved searches"? - 0M0M from email
Cool - Nimaa
This will be incredibly useful. Thanks to all involved in the design and execution. - Kathy Fitch
Nice addition! - Michael Fidler
But what exactly is "Best"? Is it anything that has a certain number of likes/comments? - Laura Norvig
@Bret LOL THAT WAS MY PROJECT! I will release it tomorrow. But you've also did it and killed my friendfeed application **sigh** But mine has multi-reporting weekly-daily-monthly at the same time and adjustable entry count! - Alp
@Bret please consolidate me or I won't code new apps with you api! :-) - Alp
Alp: we were not trying to withhold data. Later today the documentation will be updated to reflect the ability to obtain "Best of" for users. The feed id will be USERNAME/summary/N (similar to "Best of" for lists) - Benjamin Golub
Hi Ben, that is pretty funny, I tried that URL earlier today to see if it has been secretly released :) - Paul Kinlan
Bret: While Twitter struggle to keep their fail whale under control, you guys are developing stuff like this. Amazing - Thanks! - Jim Connolly
awesome feature, this will be highly useful for my corporate group ideas / content sharing; projects, etc.... THANK YOU :) - Susan Beebe
Great work. I especially like that it works on lists too. - Meryn Stol
my inbox might say different, but I like that :-) - Dobromir Hadzhiev
Wow, this is really neat! And it links into the idea I expressed earlier, re: reducing signup friction / enabling limited guest privileges. Imagine if I could embed one of my FF rooms on my personal web site, and enable people to subscribe to that feed by e-mail with just a couple of clicks... rather than saying "you can get e-mail notifications but you have to sign up for Friendfeed first." "sign up" -- though admirably lightweight on FF -- is still a huge barrier. - Adam Lasnik
is there a love button cause I dont like this option I LOVE this option..great work guys - (jeff)isageek
Three options I would like (1) Can I select "top 100" instead of "top 30"? (2) Could I select both "best of day" and "best of week"? (3) How about older timeperiods? I'd love to get an e-mail with stuff from last week or Mar 2009? Start & end dates? Anything to help me read FriendFeed off-line would be great since I spend long periods off-line at festivals (especially during summer time) or overseas. - Awesome job guys! - Mitchell Tsai
So this works on groups too, cool! But we still cannot see Best of for groups on the site on friends lists. :-( I have several friends lists that include just groups and when I select to view the best of the page it's empty (even though if I got to the individual best of for those groups there are entries there). - Kol Tregaskes
does anyone know of a web service that can do this? (I'm thinking weekly email updates of my favorite feeds/people) I don't think there's anything like friendfeed .. - Friendfeed's Francisco
That's a cool feature - Xitong Liu
FWIW this isn't working for me any longer. Perhaps that has something to do with my Gmail settings though. - Mark J Severely Corny
Emails no longer get sent except for Subscriptions. The last non-sub email I recieved was July 15th, 2011. - Jimminy, CoG of FF
I still get them. - AJ Batac :)
I get these every day. - NotdaBOTTurlokin4
Benjamin Golub
We added a few features you might have missed recently: support for imgur.com thumbnails (http://friendfeed.com/search...) and "Best of" for users/groups on the iPhone (http://friendfeed.com/iphone...)
Screen shot 2009-10-29 at 3.05.19 PM.png
Rumors of FriendFeed's death are greatly exaggerated. (Thank you, Ben!) - Stephen Mack
Thanks, guys :) - Friendfeed's Francisco
Stephen, very happy to see new features like this, but I think the "death" part is the major users reducing their activity. I'd love to see some support from Facebook in promoting FriendFeed more to encourage those users to go back. Or maybe they don't want to? Regardless, bonus for me! Thanks Benjamin - you're awesome! - Jesse Stay
Jesse, fair enough but major users always did come and go. Some of the departees who left said they were doing so because there was no new development. Clearly not all development is halted. Last week Paul hinted that FF may receive a major new feature, and characterized his participation as "20% time" -- I'll take that. - Stephen Mack
I backed down off the all caps. The group "best of" is really useful, love it. - Stephen Mack
Stephen, I agree - I'd just like some confirmation that Facebook cares about all this so I can know whether to focus my efforts on Facebook or FriendFeed or both. - Jesse Stay
I noticed the best of on the iPhone the other day, wrote it out on a cake and then ated it. - Josh Haley
Thanks for the update Ben - AJ Batac :)
Jesse, I think you should focus where your users are focused. What do SocialToo users want? But if they want Facebook focus, you should still keep an eye on FriendFeed, since the future Facebook will look a lot more like FriendFeed. - Bruce Lewis
Bruce, I'm not sure we know that. - Jesse Stay
Paul Buchheit said the FB acquisition was attractive because of shared vision/direction. I would be surprised if a lot of that vision wasn't already embodied in this product right here. - Bruce Lewis
not enough, best of day should be like a stream that can be traced back - ffcode
ffcode: you can do that. Here is the "Best of week" from one year ago: http://friendfeed.com/summary... - Benjamin Golub
thanks Benjamin - ffcode
ITS ALIVE!!!!!!! MUH HA HA - Roberto Bonini

FriendFeed API v2: Real-time, OAuth, file attachments, and more - http://blog.friendfeed.com/2009...
FriendFeed API v2: Real-time, OAuth, file attachments, and more
"Today we are launching version 2 of the FriendFeed API for beta testing. We focused on making the API simpler to use, and we added number of compelling new features." Documentation: http://friendfeed.com/api... - Bret Taylor from Bookmarklet
OAuth? Sweet. Thanks a lot for all the new good stuff in the API: can't wait to use it. - Mark Trapp
very nice. great work! - Alfredo 亜瑠布れっど
Yet another reason to like Bret. :-) - Jesse Stay
Great!!! - YungSang from FriendFoo
nice! - Daniel Rust
good job guys, I bet devs are jumping high right now - Dobromir Hadzhiev
Sweet, congrats! - Ivan Zuzak
nice, good to see OAuth support, this will enable a larger 3rd party ecosphere around FriendFeed, I hope - Jeroen De Miranda
After going through the documentation and playing around with some feeds, I love the fact that you can now see the subscriber lists of people who have their feeds set to private as long as you are subscribed to them and authenticate (mimicking the main site functionality). One thing that's absent is a discussion of Direct Messages. Do they show up in feeds if you authenticate? How do we find just direct messages? - Mark Trapp
Mark: direct messages are accessed using the feed ID "filter/direct". Read more about feed IDs at http://friendfeed.com/api.... Also direct messages appear in the "home" feed. - Benjamin Golub
Benjamin: ahhh, I see it now. I missed it when skimming that list over. Thanks! - Mark Trapp
Can you post the wget version of the command line? - Gabe
Gabe: wget --user=bgolub --password=passwd --post-file=MyPhoto.jpg http://friendfeed-api.com/v2... should work. In theory. Edit: nope. I'm not sure it's possible to do with wget. - Mark Trapp
Thanks God it is New API. - Ahmet Alp Balkan from iPod
Nice progress here with this release! - Micah
I love it! - friday night
Why is wget questionable? - Gabe
Gabe: wget doesn't support multipart forms as a design decision. If you post a file, FriendFeed returns a 404, and if you post data, the query is too long for wget to handle. - Mark Trapp
cool : ) - Gurkan Oluc
Good work, look forward to seeing what developers can create - Joe Dawson
doublepluslike - Vezquex
curl FTW. - Jeremy Kunz
This is great, FriendFeed team. Good job. - Thierry R. Andriamirado
Woowoo, bgolub's password is “passwd” ;-) - Amit Patel
Amit: I wonder how many people tested that :) - Benjamin Golub
Thanks to bgolub posting his password, I now have all of FriendFeed's secret documents about notorious users, useless metrics, Justin Timberlake's promoting FF on Oprah's show, hiring Colbert as a spokesperson, Ev Williams being just a “distraction”. TechCrunch is going to love this! ;) - Amit Patel
Yes big big thanks to the whole team for all their hard work!! - ɐ ɯıʞ sıɹɥɔ from iPhone
thank you;) waiting for the release :) loving clone - abdellah from FriendFeed API Example
Yay subscribers exposed! - EricaJoy

@Kol .. :] that, partially, might have been the purpose.... I don't know it exactly either. :] .. was I reflecting on a cat under the fax, and that it is hard to fax that way ... /?:] ... "underfaxing at its worst" .. - pb:
Ah, OK, Petr. :-) - Kol Tregaskes

even a flat cat... faxes just can't handle the hair. You'd have to shave the cat first, else the hair will burn and stick to the drum... a mess! (I am extrapolating from transparencies, mind, i don't have access to a cat to test) - Iphigenie
Hehe, Joelle. This is now tied for the 'likes' top stop. One more then, hehe. :-) - Kol Tregaskes
Hehe, Greg. Blimey! Erm, is that not far from 500 likes now? ;-) - Kol Tregaskes

Steve, it does look a little out of place, but cats are pretty bendy. ;-) - Kol Tregaskes

Where we're going, we don't need roads. - Sean Oliver
@ Joe Pierce>@Akiva Moskovitz >@Sean Oliver >Hello! Which part do you like? Which part is best of you? - keiko-san
It's really hard for me to pick a favorite part, I love the entire movie. The stuff at the dance is always fun. - Joe "Looptid" Pierce
Part 1 is the best for me. When I watched this movie in Hawaii, I was so exting!! This is the really great film! - keiko-san
You just said that Joe Pierce is better than I am and you expect me to respond to you? MATH DOESN'T LIE. - Akiva
I agree Akiva, math doesn't lie. And the math symbol up there says I am greater! Now respect my authorita, or I'll get Darth Vader from the planet Vulcan to come down here and melt your eyes out with his rock music! - Joe "Looptid" Pierce

You are my density. - Melly Botts

1と2のジェニファー役の子が違ってましたよね・・・?何故かな・・・。他はほとんど前作と変わらなかったはずなのに。それがちょっと残念でしたぁ。私は1作目が一番好きですネ! - keiko-san
++ Akiva & Joe, unable to stop laughing... great play, Keiko, when you added the > symbol, it was like referring to the math symbol, "greater than" (8 > 5), so it obviously was a joke to make after reading. So it was like Joe was greater then Akiva and then better then Sean. And your answer afterwards was even better.. oh, my tummy hurts, lol: "What does it mean?" perfectly suited. 8) - Zu from AOD
It means we may have created an alternative 1985! (Oops, that's the second movie, right?) - Zu from AOD
Great Scott! Future me here, speaking for the past me that posted here. We are sorry Akiva! The future has taught us many a crazy lesson in being polite. I have brought you this dehydrated pizza by way of apology. - Joe "Looptid" Pierce

I love this movie. I was stuck at home one summer, too young to drive and too old to go to the local "summer camps". I watched that movie twice a day every day just to pass the time. I had the entire script memorized. By the time I actually got to go to an away camp for a week I was able to perform the whole movie for my tent mates. Oh, to be young and bored again. - Lindsay
<3 ...one of my all-time favorites! - .LAG liked that
"Hello McFly!" - Alonzo Hayden from BuddyFeed
@Lindsay > The movie reminds us that it was. It was fun and it was painful. The first saw this film it was I'm in Hawaii. The fond memory. - keiko-san

We are living in "The Future" that described in the film. Are we happy? :)) - Ali Oz
@Ali_kısa-öz actually it could be better. I want a hoverboard. I guess we still have 5 years for it to be developed according to BTTF2 ;) - Alonzo Hayden
@Alonzo Hayden, "Jules Verne" on time, utopias returning to reality at time of the grandsons. But now we have written their own utopias transform ourselves to reality. Now the "time flow" very accelerated. :) - Ali Oz

After most have put their placemarks on, don't let anyone edit it because there's always someone out there waiting to fuck shit up. - Andrew Trinh
@Andrew...good point. I just changed it from public to unlisted which only makes the map available to those with the URL. - Mark Krynsky
Even so, last time we had the Confessions account details on FF it was tinkered with. - Andrew Trinh
I added mine, but in the process of learning I think I nudged the Sydney, Australia points off a little. Sorry. - Rob H.

Added. Seems like there are a lot of us in the Bay Area...we must do a get together at some point. - Neal "thePuck" Jansons
@Neal yea, we really need a FriendFeed meetup. I might be up there for Web 2.0 in March...or we can have one at SXSW if a large number of us are going. Let's plan and get the Upcoming page going. - Mark Krynsky
Am I the only FriendFeeder in VA? - Aram Zucker-Scharff
@Mark Not gonna make SXSW, but am definitely down for working on an FF get together. March is long enough away to make sure plenty of people have time to plan ahead. I added you on Upcoming so we can start coordinating it. Anyone else interested/want to help set this up? - Neal "thePuck" Jansons
Maybe we can talk Paul & Bret into letting us invade the FF offices for a meetup in conjunction with Web 2.0? That would be sooooo cool! - Mark Krynsky

For some reason, the first comment in this post is not being translated http://friendfeed.com/ff-kyot... - jnman
jnman, google's translation service has it's limitations. I don't know what is different about that particular comment, though. This is anecdotal, but I would roughly estimate that 20% of the posts I've tried google translate responds with at least some null translation results. - Micah
Thank you Micah! Josh just showed me how to do it. I didn't know you had to open an individual post by clicking the time. I'm tech challenged. :) - Trish Haley
dude, you're a ninja - chrisofspades
Trish, thank you for the honesty. Ahhhh, _documentation_ so often an afterthought *scolds self*. Actually, if someone wants to pitch in help make a tutorial, please let me know. I'm working on a full set of pre-loaded configurations for each support translation language ~ maybe it will get released tonight (hard not to be in all the great conversations, though - that's the rub :D - Micah
Thanks, chrisofspades. I've been meaning to ask how the activity on ffThreadKiller is lately? If ya-all haven't checked it out yet head over to http://friendfeed.com/friendf... - Micah
Micah - tried out the bookmarklet on safari :))) Awesome. interesting how much better the translation is that the google.com/translate .(google.com version doesn't seem to do transliterated text. - the version your script accesses is getting a fair amount of it.) - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
activity waned. and I've been waffling on some back-end decisions that's preventing me from updating it. - chrisofspades from email
Rob, cool. That's an interesting comparison. - Micah
chrisofspades, yeah, I guess for a lot of people the statistic is interesting initially, but doesn't have legs. Have you considered expanding what statistics it gathers? You've already worked out how it spiders, what other calculations are feasible? I've seen a lot of requests for date range searching. Maybe some slice of data related to the timestamp. - Micah
date range searching would be sweet chrisofspades! if there's anything I can do to help please let me know! test maybe? - metalerik
Rob I noticed that too. - metalerik
*bump* I installed it on my home machine :) - Zulema ⋅ spicy cocoa tart
And it worked? - Micah
Yeah, mostly. :) I think people tend to write with mispellings though so that's tough to translate anyway. - Zulema ⋅ spicy cocoa tart
Oh, cool. :) - Micah
JSLeFanu
Yes, apparently this is possible. Also, for iPhone Users outside the US, I notice that only one Google Voice app is available, as of, today in the App Store (this refers to the Ireland store but I presumes applies elsewhere in the EU and perhaps further afield too): VoiceCentral. Because none of the other (Google Voice) apps are available in the App Store I have a faint suspicion that VoiceCentral might just have been placed in a non US app store by mistake. So if you're non resident in the US, feel like using a proxy to set up your GV account, are an iPhone user and don't mind a couple of Euro punt on this app then, if I were you, I'd pile into the AppStore and get me a copy of VoiceCentral before its pulled by Apple. Enjoy and remember, if it doesn't work, don't blame me. For the record I've downloaded myself a copy but haven't yet attempted to try to set up a GoogleVoice account, I haven't even got an invite yet (There's a hint in there: if anyone can advise me, or help, on how to get a GV invitation I'd be very thankful for your help) - JSLeFanu from Bookmarklet
I set up a Google Voice account from Germany this weekend. I had to screen-share with a US colleague to get the initial registration done, afterward I used localphone.com to redirect calls. Voice Central works flawlessly. - Lars Trieloff
Lars, thanks a million for the heads up on that. At least now I know another part of the picture for getting this done. I'm pretty jazzed at the thought of getting this set up. I'll report back on how I get on. Now to get one of those invites. - JSLeFanu
How can Robert Nelson's public-knowledge reminder to rely on unnamed US-proxies to set it up, along with his fine print[*], be considered anywhere near useful? Lars Trieloff sez that "Voice Central works flawlessly," but what's the value of potentially-critical service which one can never know how long it may last? [^*] "fine print: if you choose to go this route only to have Google... more... - ianf ⌘
I did setup my Google Voice account using Hotspot Shield and forward all call to my sipgate.com number and I have a truphone.com US number that I linked. and I use my BlackBerry to control Google Voice and send/receive SMS - zsafwan 
This is purely academic enquiry in my part, but how many discrete steps were required (each moment of entering a site, navigating to a specific page, filling/ entering username/ password in a form, submitting/ registering, etc, counts as one step) for you to complete the GV registration, including any previous regs you now merely invoked in order to set it up? 100? 200 discrete steps? I wonder… - ianf ⌘
ianf, I'm not very far down the road with this so I can't offer any real response to the issues you raise. I made the original post because I happened upon this article the same morning I spotted this GoogleVoice app in the Ireland App Store. Normally Apple don't stock apps for services not supported in the market of any given app store. SO for those of a "hacky" mindset I thought I'd just put the word out and attach the necessary caveats. I'm as interested as you are in the responses to your post. - JSLeFanu
David, I'm not questioning any decisions any of you above may have made, I am merely trying to clarify certain usually-unmentioned things as much for others' sake, as for my own. I have not attempted this unofficial GV setup, and probably won't, because I have other, analogous experiences of past "bypass-ordinary-channel" services similar to that which seldom worked in the long run.... more... - ianf ⌘
Well I hope everyone jumped on those GoogleVoice app while the going was good: http://www.macnn.com/article... - JSLeFanu
you can get a free SIP phone number from here sipgate.com - zsafwan 
Well I got my GoogleVoice invite today. Hooray! Hooray again that I grabbed that VoiceCentral app before it was pulled. Boo, I'm still not sure if I can get this to work in a practical way. I'm with a VOIP provider in Ireland and my package includes limitless free to the states, among numerous other places, but I haven't yet worked out the way, if any, I can get to use the GoogleVoice... more... - JSLeFanu
Ok, I give in. I'm now with ianf ⌘ on this whole gig. I can't tell anyone if GoogleVoice hacking is worth the trouble or not because I've got nowhere near getting registered. I tried the SipGate route. I made several attempts to fill out their online form but at the bottom of the page the CAPTCHA text wouldn't render. Of course I was using a Proxy, several different ones to register so... more... - JSLeFanu
But an invite is required... so...? Proxy is easy, just ssh into your US webhost. - Paul Grav
Paul, thanks, I have the invite already and I got it using a proxy, that bit was easy. I only have the haziest notion of what ssh means so I'll postpone attempting that until my understanding catches up a bit. I suppose its possible that in practice the process "can" be as easy as Gadgetell portray, its just that in my experience it isn't. Maybe it would be a breeze if I knew more about this "ssh-ing" but I don't and Gadgetell didn't suggest any competence in ssh-ing" was needed. - JSLeFanu
Well, if you have a webhost in the US, just open a terminal and type: ssh -D 1080 mywebhost.com Then fire up Firefox and change the socks host to 127.0.0.1 and 1080 for the port. Lifehacker has a more complete guide: http://lifehacker.com/237227... - Paul Grav from IM
What about the fact that international numbers are not accepted? I'm in Canada, and yeah, I had no problem signing up, proxy-style. However, it won't allow me to route my calls to my area code. I foolishly accepted a number in an outside area code (American) close to my locale, and now I'm stuck giving it a routing number that it won't accept. I think I should have waited and done it... more... - timedalkat
Paul, thanks for the tip, I really appreciate the info. I actually don't, yet, know how to do any of that. I'm posting from the phone at the moment but I'll be sure to check out the lifehacker link you provided when I'm back at the Mac. I might leave it a day or two to give myself a break because I got a bit pissed off with the whole process today and perhaps need a bit of a breather.... more... - JSLeFanu from BuddyFeed
timedalcat, you raise a good point and one that's already crossed my mind. Sorry to say I can't, yet, help you on this one. I'm not even close to being that far through the process yet myself and consider such concerns an extravagant luxury at this stage . My own local Irish number is with an Irish Sip service but I haven't even worked out how to configure GV (assuming I even make it... more... - JSLeFanu from BuddyFeed
The article is crap, it basically tells you to setup a proxy but that alone isn't sufficient to setup a Google Voice account. During the setup you select a Google Voice number but you need to forward calls to your own phone, which will inevitably have an international number and only US numbers are supported. - Paul Grav
I would think the simple way to get around any US IP address requirements would be to have someone in the US setup a TOR hidden service that points to the GV registration. It wouldn't have the same kinds of limitations as typical proxies. (I'm not the Robert Nelson of the article btw) - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
I'd be interested to know whether anyone has tried this particular method. I'm poised to give it a go, the main thing holding me back is that I haven't got my head around the possible routing costs. I know I need a US number, I suppose I could link one to my Skype account. That cost is easy to calculate. I also have an Irish geographical VOIP SIP number already and one Mobile (or cell)... more... - JSLeFanu
BTW, for anyone interested I eventually managed to set this up. Whether it's worth it or not is a different matter entirely. - JSLeFanu

[WHAT IS]: FriendFeed (and what is it for)? An Introduction
I remember when I first logged in to FriendFeed (I joined at the launch of the beta version, so my comments will relate to that). My first thought was "What the heck is this and what can I do with it?" I was already an active Facebook and Twitter user (as well as a blogger). Why did I need yet another social web service? In this post I and other FF for Beginners Guides will try to answer those questions. - Mark Traphagen
DEFINITION: There are as many definitions of FF as there are users. In part that's because FF is so flexible and powerful, people use it for many different things. The "official" self-description of FF is "FriendFeed helps you discover and discuss interesting stuff that your friends and family find on the web." I would add another verb: "share." So in a nutshell, FF helps you SHARE-DISCOVER-DISCUSS. The unique power of FF is the way it allows you to blend and cross all three of those actions. - Mark Traphagen
1. SHARE: FriendFeed allows you to post things from the Internet (or your own thoughts & ideas) that you want to share with others. You can do this manually by simply typing a post into the blank at the top of your Home page. OR automate what you share here by giving FriendFeed access to any of the other social web or bookmarking services you use (HOW TO: http://beta.friendfeed.com/friendf...) - Mark Traphagen
2. DISCOVER: Browse your Home page feed and any Subscriptions or Filters you have for a never-ending cascade of stuff others on FriendFeed have found fun/interesting/helpful. The more subscriptions you have, the faster that waterfall flows (feed pages in beta FF now update in real time). You can make anything you see show up in your own public feed by either adding a comment to it (see below) or clicking "like" under the topic. - Mark Traphagen
3. DISCUSS: Here's where FF "one ups" other social web services: Virtually anything you see on FF can have a discussion attached to it. This begins when any user adds a comment to the post. You can join any discussion by clicking "comment" under the post description. TIP: To keep track of discussions in which you've participated, click the new "My Discussions" link in your Filters box. Discussed topics automatically rise to the top as new comments are added. - Mark Traphagen
That's the basics, but there is SO much more power to FriendFeed! Browse or search the topics in this group for more ideas. Perhaps my fellow guides will add their own "What is FriendFeed?" definitions below. - Mark Traphagen
I like this post, but would like it even better were it more concise, less chatty, more descriptive as to the differences between FF and some other, more widely talked-about social sites. Especially for those among us who thus far have abstained from joining by-and-large sophomoric "communities". [Typo? what typo]. - ianf ⌘
Thanks for the feedback, lanf. Typo corrected. This definition was "chatty" by design. My intention was to draw in those who, like myself at one time, feel overwhelmed by FriendFeed's seeming complexity. I wanted to create interest without being exhaustive, so I limited myself to the three things that are standout (to me) about FriendFeed. Sure, other social web locations allow you to "share, discover, & discuss," but the power of FF is the unique way it brings the three together. - Mark Traphagen
Might be a good idea, though, to create a post here that describes specific differences between FF and other services. In the meantime, if you're interested in that subject, FF fanatic Robert Scoble has hosted many active discussions here on how FF differs from Twitter and Facebook in particular. If you browse this filter: http://beta.friendfeed.com/search... you'll find some of them. - Mark Traphagen
I'll study it later, but for now made it into my own filter (as apparently there is no other way to share ready-mades among ourselves). - ianf ⌘
Thanks for the tutorial. I appreciated it. - timethief
Nice definition. I will add my voice for >4. BLOG, aggregate< .Please boost the blogging capabilities. That means, allow posting more text, allow some text formatting. Otherwise, this mixture you lay out here, is the success recipe for any social site out there - BOOKMARK, aggregate - IMPORT, aggregate - DISCUSS. I might add support for email sending via "em@emailaddress" in the post, and aggregation of discuss, where comments would also go to FB, Intense Debate, Disqus, or any other platform. - pb:

How much do I love Friendfeed? This much - I made my desktop match the theme!

wow. you really do love it. - Zee.
Now don't move the browser window. - Louis Gray
Sweet, i was thinking of doing that, but i've got some really good space bg's already... - Chris Heath
I like the part where Scoble the Hulk pops up in the grey box in the corner about 200 times every day to say hello. Hi little green Scoble! Now, sit down, I'm trying to work here. - Sheree Motiska
Maybe it's time for a "you know you're addicted to FriendFeed when..." meme. ;) - Meryn Stol
Don't believe Steve. He's got other desktops with Posterous and GMail themes that he uses when he claims he's in love w/ them. ; ) - Rex Hammock
Funny, I just saved that same background image to my desktop. Just need to shrink it a bit from its 18,000x18,000 dimension :) - Jan Ole Peek
I love FriendFeed so much that I created my very first Greasemonkey script for it just now to improve the usability: "Sidebar Tweak" fixes the sidebar in place despite scrolling, which alone is worth its weight in gold. I use the Helvetica theme, and the rest of the changes are meant for it, to tighten up things to show more items, as well as highlight the user's own comments in light-blue: http://userscripts.org/scripts... Try it and let me know what you think. - Alex Schleber
I like that script, very useful! I changed position of the sidebar in my version to right:50px instead of left:900px so the sidebar does not cover the content area on smaller screen. Also the headers of the sidebar items was weird on the grassland theme i'm currently using. I fixed it by removing botton-margin on the .box-bar. - Jesper Lind
Oh yeah, a nice blue box on my comment, thanks for the script! - Jesper Lind

Friendfeed is coming to Seesmic Desktop and web, says Loic (see comments)
Picture 1.png
This may get me switched back to using Seesmic but will @loic release a iPhone app? - Vinko
Vinko: yes. Loic told me he's working on iPhone app too. - Robert Scoble
Now if only socialscope would put it in their client for Blackberry's. - Sheryl
Here's another vote for a Seesmic iPhone app! - Susan Beebe from BuddyFeed
I still haven't met a FF application I could stand to use for more than a few minutes. - Craig Eddy
I saw an early alpha of the iPhone app. Looked good. I also saw an early alpha of Seesmic web and the way it advanced between the alpha and launch was dramatic - so I expect the iPhone client will track the same way. - Steve Rubel from email
Robert that's really great. I definitely will consider switching back when the Seesmic iPhone app arrives. - Vinko
Will get me,too, switched back to using Seesmic ;) Looking forward to hear from Loic soon - Ali BULUT
hurray - Thomas Power
This might just tempt me away from Tweetdeck... - Andrew Terry
If they add friendfeed to the web app, I'll maybe use it instead of PeopleBrowsr. But then again, peoplebrowsr has implemented friendfeed in a very good way already. - Svartling
Great News ! - Jean-Charles
You gotta keep an eye on Yahoo homepage. They have FB integration and someday may integrate Twitter (they have the 'what are you doing now'). Seesmic is way ahead, but Yahoo has mainstream adoption - Jeremiah Owyang
Jeremiah, I agree. The new Yahoo homepage is impressive. - Steve Rubel from email
Im not sure it's impressive, as it's evolutionary, not revolutionary. When Wave comes out, it could dash the shine that Yahoo has. - Jeremiah Owyang
I like ff's web design - kang
Android app, please? :D - Rishabh Mishra (p248)
Where do I sign up! I'm praying your web app will make my life of FF, FB, Twitter ETC more manageable!!!!! W/out crashing my puters AND still let me see my Home feeds! - Arleen Boyd
I'm thinking that this is the type of post that would be good reason for FriendFeed to have a "Love" click option next to the "Like" click option so that we can register better levels of our emotion towards news we read in others' streams! - Chris Aldrich
good news! - Jeroen De Miranda
I have been using Seesmic from the beginning this is GREAT news! - Robyn Hawk
Great news. Been looking for a good Friendfeed app - Barry Howell
I'm quite excited for Seesmic's FriendFeed iPhone app. - wiredgnome
yes yes yes - Loic Le Meur
Don't forget Android when developing mobile apps! - Travis B. Hartwell
I agree with Vinko; this would be a good reason to switch back to Seesmic - Anne Mai Bertelsen
Might be late... but how is the Facebook acquisition going to effect this? I can't stand the way that app takes over Friendfeed. - Arleen Boyd

Will FriendFeed have threaded comments? I can't keep up - especially in long discussions...
As is, the longer threads are unreadable if you start late. - Andrew
I use Twhirl and keep it on the "Me" button. That shoes all threads I've replied to I can manually refresh it and get the newst posts if there are new posts. - Patrick from twhirl
I don't like Twhirl, I am looking for a native solution. - Mona Nomura
+100 - slsrx
I've tried to come up with a search term that captures @replies but it's not an exact science: http://friendfeed.com/e.... Other than this if you go on NoiseRiver and your comments anything that mentions your name is highlighted in yellow, which is very useful. - Kol Tregaskes
Twitter threaded comments would be welcome too, though not sure how to implement this? - Kol Tregaskes
One option is to provide two modes/views: Current (flat) or threaded/nested. Choice could be in the settings or behind the More -menu, for example. This way everyone would be happy. - Jemm
No threaded comments please it just leads to more chaos in long entries - The Real sofarsoShawn
Perhaps limit the depth to just 1 thread? I don't really want a reddit-looking site but threaded comments would be cool in some way. #betakoltag-sg-postscomments - Kol Tregaskes
I would very much enjoy threaded comments as an option so one could choose not to use it if they didn't like it. I would also like to see an option for timestamps on comments. - Tony Miller
it would be nice as an option, perhaps including controls for depth and sorting - Mike Chelen
the lack of threads in comments makes it more difficult to follow smaller conversations happening within a post when you have tens of comments under it. I hope this feature comes soon. - Davide D'Incau
Instead of indenting for threaded view, how about this: when you click on a comment, its ancestors (there would only be one at each level) are highlighted in one colour (perhaps with shades to indicate generations), and its *immediate* (so that you aren't overwhelmed) children in another. For colourblind users we could draw boxes around the comments or something. - Karl Knechtel
That way, you can read through in order, and reply to things without worrying about multiple indents making things unreadable (the above mentioned "reddit look" - it's worse at failblog btw), but you can still easily figure out the context for a comment that was in reply to some other specific thing. - Karl Knechtel
I have mixed feelings about this. Just look at slashdot or imdb forums - looks awful. - Ahsan Ali
agree .. threaded comments(if that means little tab and answer specific comment) - in fact, comments AS (mini)posts, just under the main posts .. grading. ... rss of comments. ffrequest .. posting on checkbox to blogger , and/or wordpress (they are big) :] - pb:
Bump. - Kol Tregaskes

Think your mobile device couldn't eat another byte, that it's stuffed full of storage? Surely it has room for a tiny little thin SSD? This is Sandisk's solution for storage in portable devices, the creation of a new class of storage: integrated SSD, or iSSD. Designed to be soldered right onto a motherboard, this drive is the size of a postage stamp, weighs the same as a paperclip, and will be available in sizes ranging from 4 to 64GB. Read and writes clock in at 160MB/sec and 100MB/sec, respectively, plenty fast enough to run a full OS, with an SATA interface ensuring broad compatibility. Early units are available now, with bulk orders shipping soon. Now, how many would you like? Just the one, monsieur? Dang, J. Those are awesome! I'll agree with MC. - Vicarbott

#1. Very very cool! - AJ Batac :)
#2 - the lighthouse. - Brian Johns

I vote for the lighthouse as well, although both are so wonderful its hard to choose. I tend to prefer a breakup on the horizon, which led me to my choice. - JCunwired
LIghthouse for me, easy winner. - Kol Tregaskes
These are great, Johnny. I know you already chose #1, but I really like #2. Like Jason Huebel stated above, there is more visual interest and detail in the second one, it really draws you in and keeps your interest. #1 doesn't have anything that really does that, at least for me. - Justin Korn
I prefer #1. #2 has balance issues. - Akiva
I like the second one - Slavomira Vladimirova
#2 has my preference. - Irma Vermaat
#2 has more joyful look. - Ashish
Definitely #2 - BRҰANSAҰS
