I now get the FriendFeed Feedback posts as a Best of Day email so it doesn't fill up my feed, but I don't miss feedback. I also set up a "Best of Day" email for my "Technology people" friend list so I get a pretty good overview of tech news every day via email.

Ahsan: it is somewhat random right now when the emails are sent, but we built in the backend capability to control what time they are sent, and we plan on exposing that control to users in the future. Right now, it is kind of random - sorry!

Alp: we were not trying to withhold data. Later today the documentation will be updated to reflect the ability to obtain "Best of" for users. The feed id will be USERNAME/summary/N (similar to "Best of" for lists)

Wow, this is really neat! And it links into the idea I expressed earlier, re: reducing signup friction / enabling limited guest privileges. Imagine if I could embed one of my FF rooms on my personal web site, and enable people to subscribe to that feed by e-mail with just a couple of clicks... rather than saying "you can get e-mail notifications but you have to sign up for Friendfeed first." "sign up" -- though admirably lightweight on FF -- is still a huge barrier.

So this works on groups too, cool! But we still cannot see Best of for groups on the site on friends lists. :-( I have several friends lists that include just groups and when I select to view the best of the page it's empty (even though if I got to the individual best of for those groups there are entries there).

Stephen, very happy to see new features like this, but I think the "death" part is the major users reducing their activity. Jesse, fair enough but major users always did come and go. Some of the departees who left said they were doing so because there was no new development. Clearly not all development is halted. Last week Paul hinted that FF may receive a major new feature, and characterized his participation as "20% time" -- I'll take that.

Jesse, I think you should focus where your users are focused. What do SocialToo users want? But if they want Facebook focus, you should still keep an eye on FriendFeed, since the future Facebook will look a lot more like FriendFeed.

After going through the documentation and playing around with some feeds, I love the fact that you can now see the subscriber lists of people who have their feeds set to private as long as you are subscribed to them and authenticate (mimicking the main site functionality). One thing that's absent is a discussion of Direct Messages. Do they show up in feeds if you authenticate? How do we find just direct messages?

Gabe: wget doesn't support multipart forms as a design decision. If you post a file, FriendFeed returns a 404, and if you post data, the query is too long for wget to handle.

I love this movie. I was stuck at home one summer, too young to drive and too old to go to the local "summer camps". I watched that movie twice a day every day just to pass the time. I had the entire script memorized. By the time I actually got to go to an away camp for a week I was able to perform the whole movie for my tent mates. Oh, to be young and bored again.

jnman, google's translation service has it's limitations. I don't know what is different about that particular comment, though. This is anecdotal, but I would roughly estimate that 20% of the posts I've tried google translate responds with at least some null translation results.

chrisofspades, yeah, I guess for a lot of people the statistic is interesting initially, but doesn't have legs. Have you considered expanding what statistics it gathers? You've already worked out how it spiders, what other calculations are feasible? I've seen a lot of requests for date range searching. Maybe some slice of data related to the timestamp.

Yes, apparently this is possible. Also, for iPhone Users outside the US, I notice that only one Google Voice app is available, as of, today in the App Store (this refers to the Ireland store but I presumes applies elsewhere in the EU and perhaps further afield too): VoiceCentral. Because none of the other (Google Voice) apps are available in the App Store I have a faint suspicion that VoiceCentral might just have been placed in a non US app store by mistake. So if you're non resident in the US, feel like using a proxy to set up your GV account, are an iPhone user and don't mind a couple of Euro punt on this app then, if I were you, I'd pile into the AppStore and get me a copy of VoiceCentral before its pulled by Apple. Enjoy and remember, if it doesn't work, don't blame me. For the record I've downloaded myself a copy but haven't yet attempted to try to set up a GoogleVoice account, I haven't even got an invite yet (There's a hint in there: if anyone can advise me, or help, on how to get a GV invitation I'd be very thankful for your help)

I did setup my Google Voice account using Hotspot Shield and forward all call to my sipgate.com number and I have a truphone.com US number that I linked. and I use my BlackBerry to control Google Voice and send/receive SMS

This is purely academic enquiry in my part, but how many discrete steps were required (each moment of entering a site, navigating to a specific page, filling/ entering username/ password in a form, submitting/ registering, etc, counts as one step) for you to complete the GV registration, including any previous regs you now merely invoked in order to set it up? 100? 200 discrete steps? ianf, I'm not very far down the road with this so I can't offer any real response to the issues you raise. I made the original post because I happened upon this article the same morning I spotted this GoogleVoice app in the Ireland App Store. Normally Apple don't stock apps for services not supported in the market of any given app store. SO for those of a "hacky" mindset I thought I'd just put the word out and attach the necessary caveats. I'm as interested as you are in the responses to your post.

Paul, thanks, I have the invite already and I got it using a proxy, that bit was easy. I only have the haziest notion of what ssh means so I'll postpone attempting that until my understanding catches up a bit. I suppose its possible that in practice the process "can" be as easy as Gadgetell portray, its just that in my experience it isn't. Maybe it would be a breeze if I knew more about this "ssh-ing" but I don't and Gadgetell didn't suggest any competence in ssh-ing" was needed.

What about the fact that international numbers are not accepted? I'm in Canada, and yeah, I had no problem signing up, proxy-style. However, it won't allow me to route my calls to my area code. I foolishly accepted a number in an outside area code (American) close to my locale, and now I'm stuck giving it a routing number that it won't accept. I think I should have waited and done it...

The article is crap, it basically tells you to setup a proxy but that alone isn't sufficient to setup a Google Voice account. During the setup you select a Google Voice number but you need to forward calls to your own phone, which will inevitably have an international number and only US numbers are supported.

I would think the simple way to get around any US IP address requirements would be to have someone in the US setup a TOR hidden service that points to the GV registration. It wouldn't have the same kinds of limitations as typical proxies. (I'm not the Robert Nelson of the article btw)

My first thought was "What the heck is this and what can I do with it?" I was already an active Facebook and Twitter user (as well as a blogger). Why did I need yet another social web service? Thanks for the feedback, lanf. Typo corrected. This definition was "chatty" by design. My intention was to draw in those who, like myself at one time, feel overwhelmed by FriendFeed's seeming complexity. I wanted to create interest without being exhaustive, so I limited myself to the three things that are standout (to me) about FriendFeed. Sure, other social web locations allow you to "share, discover, & discuss," but the power of FF is the unique way it brings the three together.

Nice definition. I will add my voice for >4. BLOG, aggregate< .Please boost the blogging capabilities. That means, allow posting more text, allow some text formatting. Otherwise, this mixture you lay out here, is the success recipe for any social site out there - BOOKMARK, aggregate - IMPORT, aggregate - DISCUSS. I might add support for email sending via "em@emailaddress" in the post, and aggregation of discuss, where comments would also go to FB, Intense Debate, Disqus, or any other platform.

I love FriendFeed so much that I created my very first Greasemonkey script for it just now to improve the usability: "Sidebar Tweak" fixes the sidebar in place despite scrolling, which alone is worth its weight in gold. I use the Helvetica theme, and the rest of the changes are meant for it, to tighten up things to show more items, as well as highlight the user's own comments in light-blue: http://userscripts.org/scripts... I like that script, very useful! I changed position of the sidebar in my version to right:50px instead of left:900px so the sidebar does not cover the content area on smaller screen. Also the headers of the sidebar items was weird on the grassland theme i'm currently using. I fixed it by removing botton-margin on the .box-bar.

One option is to provide two modes/views: Current (flat) or threaded/nested. Choice could be in the settings or behind the More -menu, for example. This way everyone would be happy.

the lack of threads in comments makes it more difficult to follow smaller conversations happening within a post when you have tens of comments under it. I hope this feature comes soon.

Instead of indenting for threaded view, how about this: when you click on a comment, its ancestors (there would only be one at each level) are highlighted in one colour (perhaps with shades to indicate generations), and its *immediate* (so that you aren't overwhelmed) children in another. For colourblind users we could draw boxes around the comments or something.

That way, you can read through in order, and reply to things without worrying about multiple indents making things unreadable (the above mentioned "reddit look" - it's worse at failblog btw), but you can still easily figure out the context for a comment that was in reply to some other specific thing.

I vote for the lighthouse as well, although both are so wonderful its hard to choose. I tend to prefer a breakup on the horizon, which led me to my choice.

These are great, Johnny. I know you already chose #1, but I really like #2. Like Jason Huebel stated above, there is more visual interest and detail in the second one, it really draws you in and keeps your interest. #1 doesn't have anything that really does that, at least for me.
