I've apparently set my lists, subscriptions, and home feed up in such a way that the only way to find the gigantic Leo Laporte / Michael Arrington blowout thread is via direct link or by searching: it doesn't show up in Friend of a Friend or Best of day, or even in hidden items. Something massive happened on FriendFeed, and the only way I knew about it was from an external source. The idea that your friends will tell you about something if, and only if, it's important isn't true in all cases.
- Mark Trapp
i like the idea and support it - but wth aren't you sub'd to leo? or at least the twit-conversations group?
- Chris Heath
are you not sub'd to scoble either? he had many comments in there too
- Chris Heath
Now that I know the thread exists, I can identify who I should've been subscribed to or watching to find the thread, but if you don't know the thread exists because you aren't subscribed to the right people, there are situations in which one would completely miss incredibly popular threads. In my case, I'm not subscribed to Leo Laporte and Robert Scoble somehow isn't in any list, so neither helped me discover the thread (I found it in the comments on TechCrunch).
- Mark Trapp
yeah that's why i support this idea, just figured everyone is sub'd to at least one of those two
- Chris Heath
The best of by topic is a good idea - but I spent so much time hiding all the threads, shares, and reshares of the GG exchange - that I would hate to see it on a Best of thread
- LPH™ and his dog P™
Man, those Gillmor Gang show threads generate a ton of comments every week here. Somewhere along the line, I'll have to actually check one out.
- Hutch Carpenter
Why do you think that news bit would necessarily appear on a global "best of" list? Isn't it possible to imagine that it's only news for your personal "best of" list (where you probably rightfully complain it was missing from)? News about US tech reporting might seem like the biggest topic out there if you're involved, but if you're talking global, perhaps there's some other community...

Philipp: the thread got over 1000 comments and several dozen likes, making it by far the most popular topic on FriendFeed all weekend. I should be able to discover wildly popular threads like that on FriendFeed, without the aid of third-party sources, even if my configuration of subscriptions and lists prevent my friends from exposing it to me.

"Structure and navigation must support each other and integrate with search and across subsites. Complexity, inconsistency, hidden options, and clumsy UI mechanics prevent users from finding what they need."

"Quality is a word that a lot of people like to use when describing their web design services. But what is quality, how do you know if a design is quality or not. Well, I think that there’s quite a few ways to spot quality within web designs. Once you can see just what goes into making a quality web design, you can use the techniques to perfect your own style."
