Andy
The tweets around the ALA dues are fascinating to me. Seeing someone who rallied at the NJ Capitol with me to ask for $1 (the cost per capita to pay for state library programs and services in NJ, which we didn't get) getting testy about spending a coffee cup amount for membership fees is mindblowing.
Perhaps the coffee cup analogy is old and outdated and doesn't capture the dues increases properly, but still. You'd think people might be a little more empathetic when it comes to an organization looking for more funding to cover costs. - Andy
When SLA was going through something similar it made me question what people actually felt was appropriate, both in terms of the amount they'll pay and the services performed by the org. I have a feeling there will be CA levels of disparity. - kendrak
What I keep circling back to when these blowups happen is wondering whether "belonging to an organization" has had its day as a motivator. I give to e.g. Creative Commons and EFF because I know what they're *doing* and I support it. I think ALA could make a pretty compelling case along those lines for what it does! But it seems to me that "belong to this org because it does x, y, and z"... more... - RepoRat
I think we would do better to have small, incremental increases annually or bi-annually. Something planned, so members can plan accordingly. NASIG had $25 memberships from the late 80s until about 5 years ago, and because they hadn't increased at a pace they should have, we had to up it to $75 all at once. People (and librarians in particular) understand inflation. They also like to see... more... - Royce's favorite Anna
I decided to drop my ALA membership this past year. Yes, it did give me a lot when I was active in the organization. However, I don't feel it's necessary when I am not active in an organization to be paying the level of dues that's required at the base membership level, let alone dues on top of that for divisions and round tables. I am currently making good money, however, most of that... more... - Katie
I find the "coffee cup amount" business bemusing. I spend around $0.27 for my cup of coffee in the morning (about $0.25 for the coffee beans, $0.02 for the filter). I'm guessing ALA wants to raise its dues more than $0.27? (And I would find the cost of a *$ concoction each day a SUBSTANTIAL hit to our budget.) - Walt Crawford
[I'm still an ALA member, but at a dues level I can afford indefinitely, even if it does take 25 or 35 years to get there. Not LITA, though, even if I was president back when dinosaurs and mainframes roamed the earth.] - Walt Crawford
I always circle back to the point of what ALA does for librarians across the country- lobbying nationally for libraries; IF work; ebook negotiation (ok, ok, I know it's shaky but would any of you stand up for me individually?); amazing support for amazing initiatives: Spectrum; Emerging Leaders; support of children; teens; Latino, American Indian; African American; GLQBT; academics;... more... - Marge LW
I hear what you're saying Marge, and I've heard that argument my whole career. However, as an academic librarian, I rarely see the direct impact of ALA in my daily work. If it really is making an impact, they need to do a better job of telling that story in concrete terms. - Royce's favorite Anna
After loads of feedback and a contentious process to "get it where it could be made right" a nice ready proposal will be discussed and voted on at Council 3 (with possible revisions) ... currently to proposal is a small annual increase, not to exceed the CPI, if the ALA Exec Bd deems it necessary, for the next 5 years. In year 4 this will be evaluated and reported out to the member... more... - awd from Android
How DARE you compare the ALA to coffee??!! - Steele Lawman
Sounds great, Aaron. There's just some things I was seeing that just didn't seem right. One was the "well what has the ALA done for me lately?" line of questioning. Substitute 'ALA' for 'library' and that's our public funding opposition in a nutshell. Another was "the ALA doesn't represent MY interests" line. As if the amicus briefs for the Wiley case write themselves and the lobbyists... more... - Andy
tl;dr ironic when funding arguments used to persuade stakeholders fails to persuade professionals to support their own professional association. - Andy
My emerging leaders project is on membership retention and what subscribers find of value in ALA to cause them to re-up. I'm going to be watching this thread - love this conversation :) - Caitlin
Caitlin, you and your group might want to look at how many people might be willing to still give money to the professional organization, but not at the membership level, to support those more indirect benefits to the profession as a whole. The only reason I reupped in 2011 was because at the point of my renewal I had recently lost my job, so I qualified for the unemployed level of... more... - Katie
I'm with RR. I support causes, I don't want member benefits. I am an ALA member because it supports libraries and their users, not me. Please stop spending money on printing and sending me things in the mail. (C&RL online only is a win!) - barbara fister

Toying with the idea of going to ALA this summer. I've never been.
I did a quick search and don't see an ALA thread. Who is going or maybe going? - maʀtha
maybe. depends on whether SLIS needs another booth babe. - RepoRat
I will be there for a day trip; not sure which day. - Catherine Pellegrino
You could wear the jacket at the booth. - maʀtha
I'll be there, probably fri-mon - ellbeecee
I'll be there, probably fri-mon as well - RudĩϐЯaЯïan
I'll be there at least fri-mon, maybe longer. - Marianne
I will be there for Friday-Monday. - Hedgehog
I will be there. Am already booked in the Palmer. - kaijsa
I'll be there Fri-Tuesday - ~Courtney F
I'll be there, days dependent on when my family's free for a 48 hour trip to Rockford, and I can confirm that (no surprise) Griffey will be there as well, as he his my roommate. - Jenica
i just booked my hotel for chicago. plenty of ala-sponsored $200/night rooms left. other rooms out there if you're willing to explore. looking for a roommate (room rate is $165/night plus tax). - henry
I'll be there. - Caitlin
I'll be there since it's so close; I'll likely be staying with friends who live in Chicago - John: Thread Killer
I put in for it at work at got the initial approval, but we'll see how things go with the budget. - Katie
As noted, I will indeed be there. ALA Annual is a circus, loud and busy and if you're doing it right, fun. - Jason Griffey
Thursday to Wednesday... If you want a Circus... wait til 2014 -- ALA Las Vegas! - awd
I'm there Fri-Tues with possible early play days since its a short train ride away - Marge LW

Anyone going to be at Midwinter and have extra space for a roommate on Thursday night? I found someone to bunk with for the rest of the time, but I have to fly in Thursday night, so I'm looking for a place to crash :) let me know! Thanks!
I can ask the #libtechwomen IRC channel? there are a couple folks there going. - RepoRat
I'll be there Thursday, but I don't know if I have more than one bed in my room. eta: I'm also not staying at one of the conference hotels, although I'm not far away. - Running Slow
I'm looking forward to ALA MW 2014 when it is in Philadelphia. :P - Andy
I hate how expensive Seattle is. Wish I didn't have to go, although I know it will be great once I'm there. - Caitlin
I'm from Seattle, so I've actually only stayed in hotels a couple of times since moving away. I have heard the Hotel Max on Stewart (near the Market) is nice and not super expensive. If you don't mind being outside of downtown, you can find decent deals north in the U District (a short bus ride away) or Capitol Hill (mostly walkable). - kaijsa
I got a great rate at Hotel Five. Much better than any of the official hotels. - Running Slow
Yeah, I was going to book a non-conference hotel, but I figured I'd try finding someone to share with first. I'll have to check Hotel Five if I end up needing a room for Thursday. Thanks! - Caitlin
Looks like I might be ponying up the money for Thursday night on my own. Can anyone tell me if any of the airport hotels at SeaTac are NOT scary/gross? The reviews are so mixed. - Caitlin
I've never had occasion to stay by the airport, but the SeaTac-Burien-Tukwila area is grody in general in my very biased, North King County-oriented opinion, and not close to downtown. Do you just not want to pay downtown prices, or do you not need to be at conference stuff on Friday at all? - kaijsa
In case anyone is looking for super-cheap downtown option, I've stayed in this hostel in the last few years. it was nice, and great location! http://www.greentortoise.net/ - Heather Piwowar
Mostly I'm just looking for some cheaper options. *sigh* I thought if I could find a cheap, not scary airport option then I could head downtown early Friday. I don't arrive until 9pm and I have to be downtown by 8:30am, so it's really just somewhere to sleep. - Caitlin
It's the area I find less than appealing, but if you don't want to spend any time in the area and just need a place to stay before leaving in the morning, there is a fairly new Hilton Garden Inn and a Hampton Inn near the airport. I can see them from the freeway when I fly in and out. I am a very loyal Hilton Honors member, and I've never stayed at a gross HGI or HI in my life. Just my two cents. - kaijsa

Who would be interested in something like a Lead Technology Librarian position? Not an IT in the closet thing, but a public services person? Training, customer oriented, some ref desk time? Just thinking about a new position I'll be posting in the next month or so.
I might be interested pending how the position is written :) - Sir Shuping is just sir
might you want to pitch it as an Emerging Tech Librarian instead? My sense is you might get a larger pool. - RepoRat
This sounds awesome - Will be interesting to read the description. - Caitlin
I could also field-test the ad on my students, if that would help? they're sharp folks. - RepoRat
That sounds very cool -- I like "Emerging Tech Librarian" or something like "Technology Outreach Librarian". I would imagine this job attracting tech-savvy folks with a passion for teaching and working against the digital divide -- is that the sort of person you're looking for? - Amandadon't
I like "Technology Outreach Librarian." I would totally apply for such a position, were I looking for a job. - laura x
Training IS Instruction Instruction IS Training. - ♫410 I Coach 'em Up♫
Thumbs up for "Tech Outreach Librarian." - RepoRat
Mo, I'm scared. Hold me. - Meg V. Meg
POIDH ,) - awd
I might be interested, but I would be completely underqualified on paper. It is the kind of role that would play to the strengths I do not get to exercise right now due to needing to be "everything else." - Julian
(Just by speaking up here, I guess I just officially took myself out of any possibility of being in the pool.) - Julian
Someone who knows more than the rest of us, and can model enthusiasm for the way we WILL be doing our jobs in the future. Also, will be looking for some web skills--Drupal, maybe. You all are helping me think outloud about it. I am not took keen on "Emerging Technology" because it's emerged. I would expect anyone who applies for this to be flexible and forward-thinking enough to always be looking ahead and helping us machete through the jungle. Also, I would be your boss. - Chelle Chelle Ro Ro
DO WANT. - Andy
Yeah, the reason I suggested "Emerging Tech" is that 1) it's code for that kind of enthusiasm, and 2) it doesn't put off folks who have impostor-syndrome issues. But I'm not fond of it as a phrase either, for exactly the reason you mention, Rochelle. - RepoRat
We get so many requests for classes--excel, linked in, how to use a mouse, email, how to shop smart, etc. - Chelle Chelle Ro Ro
Someone who can foster and inspire growth and development within an organization, as it pertains to the use of technology in a library? (ETA: ... and also manage a technology curriculum for the public?) - Julian
Yes, Julian. Oh, and no assholes. HiPos welcome. ;-) - Chelle Chelle Ro Ro
I could definitely find you some applicants for that. :) And part of the goal of ReMakerSpace, I think, should be to make more of 'em. - RepoRat
Oh, and there's the whole Wisconsin thing. I hope to have something ready to post by end of next week. - Chelle Chelle Ro Ro
Cool. I'll run it past my class; I think I've got one or two December grads therein. - RepoRat
I like both Emerging Tech and Tech Outreach. When you get it written, I'll definitely post to our student lists erg. We should have a few Dec grads who would fit the profile (and have experience, too.) - Rebecca Hedreen
Hey, if Ro gets this done LaCrosse is a beautiful place to live and Ro would be aces as a boss. - ♫410 I Coach 'em Up♫

I met a handful of Syracuse iSchool students at NYLA last month, and i can confidently say that there are new grads who have what you want, and want what you have. That intersection of technology and outreach is pretty compelling right now. - Jenica

I saw this in the theater with my cousin Justin and Aunt Cathy. It was the day I made my last attempt to learn to ride a bike (I'd been basically left to teach myself) and I managed to run into a parked car (I didn't know how to stop!), fell of the bike and did a number to my right leg, arm and face. I don't think I ever touched that bike again. :s - ellbeecee

Seeing moms tweet that they "can't" get their sons an Easy Bake Over because they only come in pink makes me die a little inside, twice. Once because EBOs only come in pink, because cooking is supposed to be for girls (not, you know, people who eat. which is everybody.). And again because you couldn't possibly expect a little boy to play with...
...something *pink* (girl cooties! and maybe gayness! oh no!), because boys aren't allowed to like/use things that are "for girls." Argh. - Rachel Walden
I figure the best way to combat that is with a "baking for kids" book (http://www.amazon.com/Baking-...) - Jennifer Dittrich
Ooh, maybe I'll get my nephew that book, thanks! - Rachel Walden
Yeah, my daughter wanted to be Spiderman for Halloween and wanted a Superhero birthday party. I got a lot of weird looks when I told people my 4 year old's choices. And I *know* it's way worse for boys that want stereotypically girl things. - Caitlin
Not that I think pink should be a problem, but I've seen a lot of tutorials on painting plastic toys. My EBO doesn't get hot on the outside, so I'm sure painting the pink would be harmless. (My EBO is a few years old because when I was young my parents got me the "boy" version that makes jiggly plastic bugs.) - Heather
I would get Peter an EBO when he's older, pink and all, except that as it so happens, we already have a toy oven, made for me by my father, and painted red, blue, and yellow. It does kind of need a new paint job, though.... - laura x
The original yellow EBO at the very bottom of this page is the one I had: http://goodmenproject.com/feature... And my brother and I shared it (well, he kind of hogged it). And my parents had no trouble with my desire to be Spiderman for Halloween...2 years in a row (or Emmett Kelly, Jr.). And I didn't care if the kids teased me in school, because they were cool costumes, and cool characters. (it was the 70's) - April Russo

I am on the Harrassowitz Award committee for excellence in acquisitions and we are just putting together our call text and planning our campaign for nominations. Any suggestions for listservs to circulate the call? Or other methods of getting the call in the right hands?
Hmmm...outside of ACQNET-L, I can't really think of any other listservs. I guess you could always put a notice in Against the Grain or a major blog? Do we have a major blog for acquisitions? Local/regional listserv's maybe? I bet there are plenty of reference or liaison librarians who probably know/have a good acquisitions librarian. - MontglaneChess
Can excellence in acquisitions include courage in de-acquiring something? In which case I have a great nominee in mind... - Walt Crawford
haha that's a really good idea, Walt! - RepoRat
oh yes. - barbara fister
I guess somebody needs to investigate the Harrassowitz criteria. - Walt Crawford

'k, if we're gonna do this thing we need two letters of reference. Volunteers to write 'em? I'm willing to wrangle the app. - RepoRat
I'm game. - Hedgehog
Awesomesauce. One more? - RepoRat
I could, but I think it would be more effective coming from Actual Working Librarians instead of old retired intruders. But since I sort-of instigated this, if you want me to, I will. - Walt Crawford
I think we'd have a better shot at the goal if we can get somebody who actually works in acquisitions/access. I know LSW has those folks! - RepoRat
I would - I am not known for acq but I do it with our teeny tiny shrinking budget. Though if someone else esp at a larger inst comes forward, that might be better. - barbara fister from iPhone
I'm also not acquisitions, though one of these days I'm told I get collection dev training... - Hedgehog
Barbara, I think you'd be a fab recommender. Okay, Hedgie and Barbara are recommending, I'm doing the basic app -- I think we all three send our things individually to Caitlin's gmail above. - RepoRat

Communication & Higher Education: Life on the Tenure Track at a Teaching Institution: Instructors talking about technology research: Participants needed! - http://www.commhighered.com/2011...
We are conducting a study looking at how instructors talk about technology and its use in their classroom syllabus. If you are currently teaching a class that talks about technology in your syllabus (i.e., you have a laptop and/or cell phone policy, discuss how blogs or wikis will be utilized in the classroom), and would be willing to share your syllabus with us, and fill out a quick survey (under 10 minutes) about your teaching experiences, your participation would be greatly appreciated. The results of this study may help researchers and instructors better understand technology policies. We will accept syllabus submissions through October 31, 2011. - Caitlin from Bookmarklet

Question related to comments here and elsewhere....Am I the only asshole that has/had career ambitions?
Nope, I did. Do? Did? - ωαřмaiden ❤Marrit Woman❤
No. Plenty of assholes have career ambitions. Including me, sometimes. I think librarians are often wary of "career" as a tribe, though, in the same way that we are wary of "business." - Steele Lawman
I had an earnest goal to be ALA President in the year 2015. Sure, it was based on the fact that my inauguration would be in Vegas, but goals are good. Now my goal is to not get punched when waking up a sleeping drunk or to bounce back quicker when some mom whose baby has been crying for 30 minutes while she surfs on FB calls me a "fucking bitch" after I suggest that it's time she make her child a priority. - Chelle Chelle Ro Ro
Nope. I came into librarianship convinced I wanted to be a director "someday" and have been gearing my professional decisions toward that since library school. That's been modified somewhat--I'm more certain now of the conditions under which I'd take a director's position--but for now it's still my long-term goal. - Kirsten
I wonder why (some) librarians are wary of career ambitions. Is ambition a dirty word? Or at least admitting to it? Are they made up of youthful hopes that get extinguished by reality or outside of work pressures? I don't have answers to these questions...just something I've been thinking about a lot lately. And for the record Rochelle, you're pretty scrappy....I bet you could take a drunk in a fight. :) - Sarah G.
I think librarianship is seen by some as a respectable low-intensity career, where the goals and pressures will be mostly self-imposed. I think of my colleague Jessy, who is a great special collections librarian, has built up a wonderful reputation on campus as well as an impressive amount of outreach and instruction, but who also says that one of the appeals of librarianship is that no one will ever yell at her, "Dammit Randall, you lost us the Johnson account!" - Steele Lawman
Nine years in, I am very much still an outsider. As an outsider looking in, I could point out two simple observations that perfectly explain the tension that can arise from one having strong career goals in Libraryland. These observations largely depend on the type of library. A key ratio is also involved. - Julian
I just noticed that this was posted to FriendFeed in general. I hope it was OK to be specific to Libraryland. - Julian
Oh, yeah, not a problem. - Sarah G.
I used to have career ambitions. They were beaten out of me. I am now resigned to staying in this job until I die. - Alan
What Steve said, for the most part. That's not to say I haven't talked with librarians who had their aspirations beaten out of them--whether by the profession or life in general--but the vast majority who claim to have no interest in management-type positions seem to genuinely just not want to mess with the higher stakes. - Kirsten
In my head, I am bare-knuckle brawler. I am AWESOME! Seriously, though....I am at the point in my career where I am seriously weighing whether I want to take that next step. I know that I have the chops and much to offer, but now I am questioning whether or not I want to give up that much of my life to my work. My close friends will tell you I waffle regularly on it. - Chelle Chelle Ro Ro
sort of? I didn't for a long time, but I'm starting to do more thinking about the direction I'd like to take. - ellbeecee
Also re: librarians, many people in the field just really like the core work of librarianship--helping people at the reference desk or in a class, building collections or tools. Moving up or out would move them away from those things they love about the job - Steele Lawman
I thought I was happy with a career trajectory toward a directorship, but nowadays I'm wrestling with myself about going in a direction that has a smaller impact but would, I think, make me much happier. - ωαřмaiden ❤Marrit Woman❤
I think that some people might be considered a-holes *BECAUSE* they have career ambitions. Or, at least some of us would be less included by others because of it. - Julian
No, you're not alone. I didn't (and don't) have career ambitions, but for those who do, it's all good. I agree with Steve about why a lot of us non-careerist slackers end up in the field. :) - RepoRat
While I'm not sure how I ever ended up as a librarian, I love what I do. I've tasted administration and I'm not sure it's my thing. Kudos to others for striving for more - y'all are inspiring - but I'm happy where I am - fighting the battle of Bedford Falls. - Jen
One huge difference between a career in the Navy and librarianship is that the Navy is up or out and as a librarian you can stay a librarian 1 your whole career. In the Navy always you are supposed to to be working towards the next step. - Christina Pikas from iPhone
I think that is one of the cool things about a librarianship career, you can decide to be an 'up or onward' person, or you can stay put...and you can change your mind and move backward or sideways as you like, too. For a Gemini like me, that has been a perfect fit. - ωαřмaiden ❤Marrit Woman❤
I struggle with this. I listen to friends who have become managers and directors and who seem hugely removed from the parts of the work I really enjoy. I don't want to stay put though, I want to find other challenges. Right now, I'm aspiring laterally as best I can. Eventually, I expect to be in management, but there are so few places to go up in librarianship and that tends to require pretty large locational shifts, so I'm not in as much of a hurry as I might have been had I stayed in publishing. - Hedgehog
I had someone on here passive aggressively insinuate that she is a better mother cause her main focus is on her child instead of her career because I have ambition. Big f*ck you to that. Just cause I have ambition doesn't mean my kids don't come first. - Shevonne from iPhone
The idea of not planning or worrying about next career steps is so foreign to me! It's utterly fascinating that there might be people out there who really don't sweat it. What about the non-daily job stuff? Like being an organizational president or becoming the authoritative voice on a subject (either through scholarship or blogging or speaking.) That's what I meant more by "career" (oh... more... - Sarah G.
My ambition for a long time was not to have a job. Eventually I realized that wasn't going to work out, long-term, so then my ambition became to get a job I could tolerate (which is to say one where I didn't feel I was causing harm to the world). Librarianship has sort of worked its way into my other ambitions quite nicely--it's got a lot of social justice to it, which makes me feel... more... - laura x
I am an ambitious person in the beginning of my career and I'm at least temporarily stalled out. It's very frustrating. I like hearing from other people who are ambitious. In light of my dead end job, I have been trying to focus on career development with writing, presentations, committee work, etc. However, I will say that it is hard for me to get energy up for that stuff after a day of drudgery. - Caitlin
Sarah, when I accidentally became an authoritative voice it honestly scared the living FUCK out of me and I didn't like it; eventually I found myself running away from it. (I mean, there were other, more immediate, reasons that I shut CavLec down, but being heartily sick of being Teh Authoriteh was definitely part of it.) It happened at all not because I was aiming for it, but because I... more... - RepoRat
(And yeah, traveling was hella fun and I really enjoy teaching, training, and presenting. It's the Authority part I just cannot get behind. Not no way, not nohow. Gives me to think about how I have arranged my environment and my self-presentation precisely in order to avoid Authority happening to me again.) - RepoRat
Yeah, I *flove* doing presentations and writing. It's a hard distinction to explain...I wanted to be respected but not famous? (Or infamous.) - Sarah G.
Uhm... it's best I don't answer... at least not sober. - MoTO #TeamMonique
I had ambitions in my previous career, now as a librarian, i am going with the flow. I'd like to stay here at my current job and make interesting things happen where I am. There are several things I would consider if the current job would become not as great as it is now, but I'm not pursuing them currently. - LibrarianOnTheLoose
I hear that, Sarah (and you too, MoTO). For me, it's my relentless focus on the instrumental -- is this thing I'm doing accomplishing something worth accomplishing? If being Teh Authoriteh had enabled me to accomplish stuff I couldn't have otherwise, I think I would have embraced it. It didn't, though. It just set me up as a straw man people enjoyed finding ways to knock over, which... more... - RepoRat
Teh Authoriteh/notoriety is like a version of political capital that can be used/burned up on pet projects. I swear to God, half of the reason I'm where I am and get my foot in certain doors and get invited to conversations is because I'm funny on twitter. Another third is because I write well on my blog. But it causes a lot of weirdness and requires maintenance to make it not really desirable at times. - Sarah G.
Yes. Absolutely. It's also very easy to forfeit if you step outside a certain set of behavior expectations. - RepoRat
Semi-outsider, but definitely libraryland: I screwed up proper Career design when I accepted a request to move from a (low-level) managerial position to a research position, assured it would never hurt my pay (a flat-out lie). And my professional activity's always been too scattershot to make me The Authority on much of anything. So: was any of it planned? DamnifIknow. - Walt Crawford
[One thing I did learn and keep relearning as I forget it: The things that get noticed aren't necessarily the things you expect.] - Walt Crawford
I am confused about where I want my life to go now. I know that my prior boss didn't give a lick about my huge amount of work I did for SLA and in creating a brand new organization for science librarians (STELLA, and formed with the help of the LSW http://stellagroup.wordpress.com/). So, if you do have ambition, try to make sure that your superior cares about the organizations that you are involved with. - Joe Boone
I had similar-ish experience at UK. Immediate supervisor really cared about AALL. People that decided P&T really emphasized SLA. So I tried to do both and had a nervous breakdown. - Sarah G.
It's interesting here at Illinois how many librarians get tenure and promoted to Associate and just stay there even though moving to full brings at least one reward - a big raise (a $14K raise automatically) - and potentially more involvement with some pieces of the organization. But relatively few actually try to get there - getting there does mean you need to be seen as an authority, be nationally recognized, etc. - Sarah
UK had a similar issue. I always assumed it was because by the time people jumped through the hoops to get tenure (which was INSANELY hard), they were so burnt out and bitter that they didn't think it was worth it. ...but perhaps I was projecting. :) - Sarah G.
Not really. Vague hopes which I never worked at :) RIght now- have fun, learn stuff... - Pete #TeamMonique
"A $14K raise automatically..." I would eat babies for a $14K raise. - Steele Lawman
Yes, I think that it is part of the issue with the full professor thing (I have a feeling lots of people just decide that they got tenure and that's enough), but that's also the only real way to advance within our library (beyond a unit head or AUL opening). - Sarah
And yes, the 14K raise is kind of unreal - that's 7K from campus and the Library matches that. It's a 7K raise if you get tenure. - Sarah
Not sure what I can add at this point...But one thing I really appreciate about the potential of academic libraries is the faculty model of governance. You can do some administration but it doesn't have to take over your career. A bunch of people can give department head a try and those that end up really loving it can pursue more administration. Those that don't, well, they've done... more... - John Dupuis
I think (along with Secret Agent Fister) that Things Might Be Different if more libraries had true shared-governance systems. One thing to guard against, though, is what a Chronk columnist noted about community colleges today: http://chronicle.com/article... (possible paywall) To some extent shared governance is about cross-training, which is a good tool for promoting understanding and growth IMO. - RepoRat
Stating for the record I also have career ambitions and I'm confident at least some people consider me an asshole. I'm ok with both of those things. :) - teleken from BuddyFeed
Caitlin
I am so grumpy in my frustrated ambitions. And it's made somewhat harder by my successful friends, much as I love them :)
Heh. You'll get there, cupcake. - Derrick
Thanks D... a mutual friend, who barely even wants to be a librarian, was just promoted to Assistant Director. I'm all happy for her and inwardly screaming in frustration. - Caitlin
Goodness. :| - Derrick
Hi. You don't know me, but trust me...I have been there. Many days and in many ways. Being jealous or envious of a friend's success sucks because you have those feelings and on top of it you feel like a jerk for feeling them. But it's only natural and to be expected, especially in a professional community like libraries which is very intermixed personal/professional and there's pretty much a dedicated career path so it's easy to fall in the trap of gauging your personal successes by the movements of others. - Sarah G.
Sarah G. is wise, Caitlin. I vouch for, and love her. - Derrick
:( - Katy S
Thanks friends. I just... needed an outlet. - Caitlin
Hugs and strength. And what SG the Wise said. - ωαřмaiden ❤Marrit Woman❤

Because I sometimes (meaning, not terribly often but more than most people I know around here) read science fiction, I was asked to come up with some titles of good science fiction for someone who would prefer to read minimal-to-no cursing. Can anyone help? My tastes are so idiosyncratic, that I'm afraid I'll miss a lot.
So Samuel L. Delany is right out then. *g* - RepoRat
more seriously: where is this person likely to be on the soft/hard-SF continuum? - RepoRat
I wasn't told and I forgot to ask. I'm guessing mid-to-soft, but that's a guess. - Katy S
Well, my go-to would be LeGuin's Hainish books, of course. Any Golden Age SF will do, so Asimov, maybe Heinlein despite his squicky gender politics. For an omnibus, see if the library has the Science Fiction Hall of Fame books. - RepoRat
Thanks! - Katy S
Anne McCaffrey might fit the bill. Dragonriders is more fantasy with a scifi base but some of her stuff is very sciency. And no swearing to be seen, at least not that I remember. - Caitlin
Do you know what other books and authors this person has enjoyed? - maʀtha
Caitlin beat me to it! McCaffrey can be a good choice, as well as some of the Piers Anthony stuff (like Heinlein, not always the best gender politics, but little real swearing.) Andre Norton, as well. - Jennifer Dittrich
RR beat me to it: Isaac Asimov. I guess I don't think of McCaffrey as SF (great though she is), ditto Piers Anthony. - Walt Crawford
also, is there an inordinate amount of swearing in SF and I never noticed? *ponders* - maʀtha
In my experience, less so than in "mainstream" fiction, but I'm so far behind on SF books that I'm not sure my opinion counts... (Certainly the short SF, which I do keep fairly current on, isn't known for a steady stream of cursing.) - Walt Crawford
If you get into the 'marines in space' genre there's definitely a lot of swearing. Other stuff varies a lot, but I don't notice well enough to say with certainty for some of the more recent books I've read. The dividing line of what is/isn't science fiction can be very contentious - for my own definition, I've stuck with whether the author has tried to explain the technology of the world with science or magic. Most of McAffrey's stuff I consider fantasy, but the singing ship series I don't. - Jennifer Dittrich
MT Anderson maybe? Includes some children's books, not sure for adult but very well regarded. - Hedgehog
I forgot the singing ship series. I agree with Jennifer. - Walt Crawford
how about Bujold? I don't think Miles swears..... If you kow Jessica Moyer, I'd say ask her. If you don't, I can ask her for you - RudĩϐЯaЯïan
You guys are all awesome! I, too, was unaware of excessive swearing in the genre, but I guess what it excessive for some might not bother me at all. - Katy S
I read quite a lot of science fiction , don't notice a lot of swearing either. Must be reading the wrong books or tuning them out. I could be misremembering but some of the golden age ones like Asimov do curse but it's oddly futuristish like "By Seldon/ the founder.." (Foundation series, where Seldon is i guess the equalvant of Jesus) The last science fiction writer I was a fan of is... more... - aarontay
Dean Koontz early material. - Janet:#TeamMonique
I don't think any of Bujold, Connie Willis, Octavia Butler have swearing. - Deborah Fitchett
I always like Clifford Simak - WarLord
Stranger In A Strange Land - Heinlen; Blood Child - Octavia Butler; I Robot - Isaac Asimov; Arthur C. Clarke - MoTO #TeamMonique
I like Stanislaw Lem's His Master's Voice, but that's pretty heavy on the science part of science fiction. May not be to everyone's tastes. - Chris Z.
How about Sturgeon? - maʀtha
If they don't want swearing, how do they feel about excrutiatingly painful situations, as in much of Butler's work? Is no swearing code also for not disturbing and distressing? Do they want lighter material in terms of tone? I wish I could talk to this person :) - maʀtha
I didn't recommend the rest of Butler's work for just the reasons you state. Not a lot of "swearing" but quite a bit of pain and discomfort. - MoTO #TeamMonique
Martha - I don't think it's an objection to pain and suffering as much as an objection to curse words based in religious values. From what I understand, the reader in question had a couple bad experiences with sf books with what what described as "the f-word on almost every other page." That didn't seem like the norm to me, but I don't read enough of the modern stuff to know. - Katy S
Another vote for LeGuin and Asimov from me. Read their stuff as a kid and don't remember there being any swearing in it (or not enough to remember it). - April Russo
I think most sci-fi published pre-1970 would probably be safe. - April Russo
I can also recommend K.W. Jeter's Noir, for the reason being that the swearing is deliberately masked with other words. Where we might use the word "fuck" in our language, in Jeter's vision of the future, the preferred swear words are forms of the word "connect". And he explains why this is, early on in the book. - April Russo
I'm reading Frank Herbert's Dune right now. It's great, and no cursing so far. - Lily
Hmm. DO they want sf that will not challenge their religious beliefs? Beyond Orson Scott Card, I think they might have a heard time! (caveat: I think I almost exclusively read SF that challenges the nature of reality as de facto point. I like social scientific sf, so.....) - RudĩϐЯaЯïan
Rudi - Not to my knowledge. The problem really was the excessive (I know, that's relative) use of curse words. Other than that, I think that anything goes. - Katy S

things NOT to ask for at the library... a plastic bag.
We have those. - Kirsten
for what? I was so caught off guard by the request... - Caitlin
We have them too. - Derrick
I was just a meeting discussing how much we were willing to spend on plastic bags to give away at circ.... - RudĩϐЯaЯïan
So we can put people's books in them, when it rains. Or really, for whatever. We all just bring them in from home. - Kirsten
We have them for rainy days. - Betsy #TeamMonique
Yep, we have them too - we even have plastic bag dispensers at the checkout desk that circ keeps filled up. We bring them in from home and, now that the dispensers are so obvious, patrons drop theirs off with their books, too, so we rarely run out. - WebGoddess
had them at FPOW for rain also - Jason - The Opaque
Yeah we have big heavy nice ones with the library logo on them. You have to ask for them at the circ desk though. - LibrarianOnTheLoose

I would try them all. And bacon pancakes used to be one of my most-requested dishes :-) - Starmama from Android
I think that's all for now. I'll revisit as I see fit. And again, if you love bacon on your donuts, bottled water, milkshakes, then have at it. I'm just a little bacon'ed out. - Derrick
I'm really a fan of just, plain bacon. All the other bacon-flavored stuff...well, it's just more for the rest of y'all. :-) - Russian Space Lizard
That's kind of where I'm at too, vicster. ;) - Derrick
I normally eat it plain or as a pizza topping, and I like the way it caramelizes when it's wrapped around the rolled turkey breast roast I make at Thanksgiving, but that's pretty much the extent of what I really use it for. I'd try a few of those recipes, but that's because I'll try things. - Katy S
Denny's has bacon mix-ins right now for their pancakes. - Caitlin
The obsession with bacon recipes lately has gotten a little ridiculous, in my opinion. - Trish R
I like bacon next to pancakes or waffles, or as a sandwich filling (like for a BLT), or occasionally as a burger topping. I might consider wrapping vegetables or something else in it. The rest I could take or leave (mostly leave). - John (bird whisperer)
anything that doesn't come with eggs. Even in salad's it's stank, infuses the whole bowl with its rank - sofarsoShawn

Bacon is the new truffle oil - Gunnyman™
The cupcake place near my house has these two flavors on their menu today: French toast with bacon, chocolate maple bacon. I'm not sure what to think. - Hookuh Tinypants
I'd probably try the French Toast one, but the other one is too much for me. I do like maple-candied bacon as a thing by itself, but with chocolate? Yikes. - Jennifer Dittrich
Vosges makes a chocolate with bacon that is surprisingly good. I was skeptical and wouldn't buy one. But someone offered a taste and it was good. However, I think the sickly-sweet nature of most chocolate cupcake frosting would be a bad combo with bacon. - Spidra Webster
I LOVE bacon, but it should be eaten normally dammit!!! - Jenny from Android
What Trish said. There are recipes I've seen where bacon makes sense, such as in pasta or vegetable dishes. I've tried chocolate covered bacon and a maple bacon doughnut and I'm just not feeling it at all. - Corinne L
i am #teamnormalbacon too. the rest of y'all can have a party with it. ;) - holly #ravingfangirl
I tried bacon vodka and liked it enough to consider making my own... - Andrew C (✓)
I tried maple bacon lollipops once (with real bacon). They would have been much better if they were just maple, without the bacon. - April Russo

The Holiday Gimme Guide - http://www.nytimes.com/2011...
The Holiday Gimme Guide
"IT may be better to give than to receive, but it sure is getting harder. As social scientists and etiquette experts report — and aggrieved lovers, irritable spouses and harried parents can confirm — those who receive are an increasingly difficult cohort, picky and imperious to boot. They are treating loved ones like catalogs or department stores, brandishing lengthy wish lists, demanding gift cards or boldly asking for cash. In fact, for the last five years, gift cards have been the most requested gift, according to surveys by the National Retail Foundation." - Derrick from Bookmarklet

What’s more, the study’s subjects rated givers as more thoughtful if they gave from a wish list. Yet the givers (poor saps) wrongly imagined that their giftees would be equally appreciative of gifts that hadn’t been... more... - Derrick
I think I'm pretty much only giving books and handmade items. I just decided to tone it down a bit for all the people on my list. Except my mom, who is getting custom beads from a certain FF'er :) I just figure... deal with it if my gift isn't good enough for you. So Derrick... deal with it. ;) - Caitlin

No lists were presented and gift cards aren't allowed in the exchange. I still feel bad about it. - Katy S
I think it's probably more a sense of feeling listened to and like someone isn't trying to 'change you' with a gift than feeling entitled to a particular object. I appreciate knowing that someone thought about making me smile and sometimes the easiest way to know that is to know that they put aside their ideas of who I should be and instead just accepted me. And what tiffany said. - joey
i would love it if everyone i knew had a list i could look at. it makes me feel good giving someone something i know they want. a friend has a family tradition of lists. they all make one up and exchange them and then everyone else chooses something from it (but the list-maker doesn't know what or who). i always thought it was a nice idea. - edythe
that same friend has always given me very interesting gifts. he gets me things he's interested in that he thinks i could appreciate, not necessarily things i'm interested in. i like that. it expands my horizons. - edythe
