"The question I’m being asked on a daily basis at the moment is – ‘what camera should I buy?’ Obviously cameras are on many people’s wishlists this Christmas!"

"Earlier in the week on Twitter I asked those following the DPS twitter account what point and shoot digital camera they’d buy if they had to buy one today as a secondary camera to their DSLR. Quite a few people responded but one camera was mentioned again and again (by over 25% of those who responded) - the Canon Powershot G11. Interestingly the camera is yet to be released (it’s due to ship any day now from Amazon) and so the responses are soley based upon specifications and the reputation of its predecessor the G10. What point and shoot camera would you buy if you had to get one today? Read more: http://digital-photography-school.com/the-mos..."

Odd. In the 60 or so replies there was only one mention of the Canon S90, which I've already pre-ordered. I'll be passing along my G10 once I get it. And I really never gave the G11 a second though after seeing the S90 specs.
- Ken Sheppardson
I'm definitely eyeing the G11. What point and shoot are you interested in?
- Kol Tregaskes
I have a G6 model. Very very very useful tool. :)
- Felter Roberto
So the S90 is a better cam? I'd like to see a comparison then.
- Kol Tregaskes
I think I'm leaning toward the G11, as much as I like the Olympus EP-1

i was among the canon faithful for years but got a panasonic dmc-lx3 last year and just got a panasonic dmc-zs3 (wanted smaller form factor for snowboarding/mtb) - liking image quality, 12x zoom & hd video - booyah :)

So true.. ever since the G7 I've been watching these.. want!.. soooo want!
- Can Koklu
I have the dmc-zs3 also, and I really like the HD Video it generates

I have a G9 that I absolutely adore. If the G11 knocks peoples' socks off, I know what I'll be using my end-of-year bonus on. :D

I am done with P&S cameras. I've had too many already and since I don't own a DSLR, Olympus EP-1 or Panasonic Lumix GH1 micro four thirds cameras would fit the bill though a bit larger and quite pricey. Hard to get in the states though!

Kol: I wouldn't say the S90 is "better", but I'm willing to sacrifice a bit of long end zoom and manual controls for a slimmer package and f2.0 vs f2.8. Seems like the S90 and G11 have the same "guts"... oh, and I've never said "gosh, I wish this camera had a fold out screen"... Basic Side-by-Side comparison http://www.dpreview.com/reviews...
- Ken Sheppardson
well this certainly looks pretty exciting. I'll be glad i didn't get a g10
- Matt Ellsworth
I got the G7 prior to my 50D and it's still a great camera! I don't get to use it as much anymore, but I often look at it and think it should ALWAYS be in my bag if I'm not toting around my 50D.

Interesting hack - For use with the Eye-fi Wireless SD memory card ~ "I'd like to release an updated version of the Eye Fi standalone server in python that I have been working on. This version should work on Linux, Mac OS X, Windows, Solaris, or wherever else you can load a Python interpreter." "The server can now execute an arbitrary command on each uploaded photo. This is a very dangerous feature and should be used with caution. On the other hand it is also very cool. You can have the server FTP files, display them using an image viewer, or even run sorting programs on the images."

"When we first saw the Polaroid PoGo instant camera — a device that combines a digital camera with a small ink-based printer — we were less than impressed. At the time, the seconds that ticked by as we waited for the tiny print to come out felt excruciating, but it got us wondering: Is it still faster than waiting for those old white-bordered prints to develop? After digging up an old-school Polaroid instant camera in the DVICE Archive Vault, we pitted old vs. new to see who is, or was, actually the fastest."

"With digital cameras it helps to play your cards right! SD cards, Compact Flash, xD-Picture Cards and all the flavours of Memory Stick … all have similar structures, so it’s wise to follow some guidelines in their use."

"And not only cameras: the cards are also found in PDAs, mobile phones, go-anywhere music players, robotic dogs, printers and laptops … even TV sets have card slots. Many modern cameras build in significant amounts of memory so we can head out for a shoot without a moment’s hesitation. Yet the size of images today coupled with the digicam’s emerging talents as a video camcorder means that we need big dollops of portable memory."

Just yesterday I had a corrupted directory in a 4GB CF while in camera. Was able to later retrieve nearly all images with PC Inspector (freeware, www.convar.com).

I want to know if images on the flash card can be edited on the card, or do I have to download them first? In fact, I want to edit the images while the card is still in the camera. (I guess I could try it sometime..)

"Ultrafast, light-sensitive video cameras are needed for observing high-speed events such as shockwaves, communication between living cells, neural activity, laser surgery and elements of blood analysis. To catch such elusive moments, a camera must be able to capture millions or billions of images continuously with a very high frame rate. Conventional cameras are simply not up to the task."

"We knew good and well Nikon's highly anticipated D5000 was supposed to start shipping today, and ship they did. Our own unit just arrived courtesy of an altogether suspicious unmarked white van, but rather than questioning the driver, we figured it prudent to just give you a closer look at what exactly comes in the box. Obviously, we got ahold of the D5000 Kit, which runs $849.95 and comes bundled with an 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR Nikkor lens. Initial impressions are as follows: it's lightweight, it's sexy and the articulating display is downright spectacular. Sure, it lacks some resolution compared to the D90's fixed LCD, but it sure shines bright." - gallery here: http://www.engadget.com/photos...

I was surprised by how different the side by side images looked even though the two cameras share the same sensor.
