Camera Room

A room for discussing digital cameras.

"Earlier this month, I wrote a post on the film blog about the different types of film photographers and ran a poll asking the readers to categorize themselves. It was no surprise that we had zero “film haters” chime in . I want to take a step back, look at the question in a broader sense, and open it up to a wider audience (you guys). I’m fascinated by the film vs digital thing, and I see a lot of people doing both (but that could just be the crowd that I associate with). So what I want to learn here, is what percentage of the Epic Edits readers shoot film, digital, or both." - Kol Tregaskes from Bookmarklet
Digital only for me. But I'd like to try film. What about you? - Kol Tregaskes
Right now I'm digital only, but I started out on film and still have my film SLRs, so there's always the possibility of using film again. - John (bird whisperer)
I used be film but the simplicity and speed and easy edits of digital has turned me 90% digital, not anti film maybe lazy... - WarLord
I got going w/ digital, but now I have an array of vintage cams that I like to use here and there for special occasions or for inspired images. - JA Castillo
I've stopped using film largely because there's a serious lack of decent processing labs anymore, and I don't have space for a setup myself. So, digital, but my heart will always be with film. - Marty
I bumped in to a professional photographer at Ally Pally recently, who was teaching his student, they were taking photos of various subjects. So I asked him this question, he said film camera's are still very good for learning about exposure times etc. As for me, digital, although i do have a good Nikon film camera that could do with a decent home if anyone wants it and is in the UK?! :) - Halil
I'm with Marty on this one. - Hookuh Tinypants
I'm with Cecily. I use film in my LOMO but other than that, it's all digital. I have my father's Pentax but it never gets used. - Akiva
The good thing about the LOMO LC-A is that you actually want the worst processing and crappiest stock you can get your hands on. Find a crappy place that can follow two simple directives: matte finish and process all. - Akiva
I'm far from a professional photographer, but I only use digital. A few years ago, I could definitely see the advantage of continuing to use a film camera, but with the advancements made with DSLRs over the last few years, I really no longer see the point, unless you simply want to develop the film as a hobby. - Curdy G
From Argentina: This year 70% digital + 30% film -35mm and Medium format- Till 2009 I did 50 and 50% - UNYKA from Yoono
Digital. But I still have 2 film bodies which I've always wanted to get into using again just for fun. But digital is just so much more convenient. - ronin
Both! My main cameras: Nikon d50 and Nikdon f4. The f4 is my full frame upgrade... Also carry around a Canon s90 and enjoy my Konica/Hexanon film gear as well. Holga is fun too. At some point I will take up a non-lomo med format range finder or TLR. - Ben Greenberg
*sigh* I don't have a camera. I'd like a digital one. - Starmama
Film, what's film? I haven't shot film in over 12 years... - Jeff P. Henderson
Both. Although I find that I hardly ever use my old Nikomat or Rolleicord nearly as often as I once did. - Bluesun 2600
digital - Morgan
primarily digital now but i still "play" with film now and then. - Rachel Lea Fox
I shoot mostly film right now. I do some shooting w/my DigitalRebel, but it's mainly relegated to metering/test shot service for my film cameras. :-) - vicster
I'm definitely both. I shoot a pentax K20D for all my digital and process in LR. And I have several film cameras now but mostly use a canon ae 1 with a 135mm f2.8 Tokina lens and just last week bought a Richoflex VII TLR. I also have a Holga that I don't really use at all and a Zero Image 2000 pinhole that I haven't used for awhile but do enjoy when I do use it. Next purchase is a 35mm scanner so I can put up color stuff from the ae 1. Thats a great camera! And probably my favorite film camer. - Mark Welsh
both. - Joe The Sausage
I have both, but shoot digital almost always. I actually bought the Nikon F100 after the D70 digital. - Eric
ditched my film camera last month. i'm officially done with film. - Que Sarah Sarah
Digital now and loving it. - Dan owns Comicsforge.com

It was a single-frame capture device. Not digital - it was analog. You plugged it directly into a TV via RCA cable to display. - Micah

"As far as tech concepts are concerned we see most designers lure in as many specs as possible, just to make the gadget geeky enough for the pros. The Sony Alpha SLR Concept promises no high-funda tech-specs and simply addresses the issue of ergonomics. The theory being that a flat back on any camera is a pain on the wrist and facial features like nose-protrusion and chubby-cheeks! Solution: Sony Alpha – featuring a slanted rear. The tilted back is easy on the wrist and face." - Kol Tregaskes from Bookmarklet

"Traditionally, these sort of photographs have been taken using camera traps – stationary cameras triggered when the animal breaks an invisible infrared beam. The problem with this method is that it requires a great deal of time, patience and luck. We wanted something a little more proactive and thus BeetleCam was conceived; a DSLR camera mounted on top of a four-wheel drive remote control buggy." - Micah from Bookmarklet

"Wondering How to Choose Your Next Camera? In this post Kim Brebach from Get the Picture shares some advice on the topic. As on any journey, the next step depends on where you start. If you’re a pro shooter, you won’t be reading this because you’ll know what you need or want. If you’re a serious amateur, you’ll also have an idea of what camera you want next but you may still be looking for some clues. If you own a Point & Shoot you bought 2 – 3 years ago and now want something more serious, you’ll find this useful too." - Kol Tregaskes from Bookmarklet

I'm still in the market for a high-spec compact. Is this the one to get to go with my Nikon D300? - Kol Tregaskes
No, I think you are better off with the Panasonic LX3 - Scoble, Alex Scoble
And check out the Canon S90. It's the same basic guts as the G11 in a more compact, LX3-like package. Pretty much a direct response by Canon to the popularity of the LX3, in fact. - Ken Sheppardson
I went w/the S90 for the size. If you want even more control and external flash ability, the G11 would be better. The LX3, while great for its lens, is getting rather dated. I'm still not sure why Panny's sitting on their ass and haven't come out with the LX4 yet. =p - ronin
It's sad when we consider a camera as dated when it's only a year and a half old. - Scoble, Alex Scoble
I've got both a G10 and an S90. Pre-ordered the S90 when it was announced, intending to try it for a while, then either send it back or sell the G10. I kept both. The G series is built like a brick, with all the controls directly accessible, and a hotshoe. But it's bigger than a carry-everywhere-in-your-pocket camera. The S90's more of an every day always-on-you option, but with a bit less flexibility. - Ken Sheppardson
G11 for me, - Mel Buckpitt

The Most Lusted After Soon to Be Released Point and Shoot Camera is….
"Earlier in the week on Twitter I asked those following the DPS twitter account what point and shoot digital camera they’d buy if they had to buy one today as a secondary camera to their DSLR. Quite a few people responded but one camera was mentioned again and again (by over 25% of those who responded) - the Canon Powershot G11. Interestingly the camera is yet to be released (it’s due to ship any day now from Amazon) and so the responses are soley based upon specifications and the reputation of its predecessor the G10. What point and shoot camera would you buy if you had to get one today? Read more: http://digital-photography-school.com/the-mos..." - Kol Tregaskes from Bookmarklet
Odd. In the 60 or so replies there was only one mention of the Canon S90, which I've already pre-ordered. I'll be passing along my G10 once I get it. And I really never gave the G11 a second though after seeing the S90 specs. - Ken Sheppardson
I'm definitely eyeing the G11. What point and shoot are you interested in? - Kol Tregaskes
I have a G6 model. Very very very useful tool. :) - Felter Roberto
So the S90 is a better cam? I'd like to see a comparison then. - Kol Tregaskes
I think I'm leaning toward the G11, as much as I like the Olympus EP-1 - vicster
i was among the canon faithful for years but got a panasonic dmc-lx3 last year and just got a panasonic dmc-zs3 (wanted smaller form factor for snowboarding/mtb) - liking image quality, 12x zoom & hd video - booyah :) - mike "glemak" dunn
So true.. ever since the G7 I've been watching these.. want!.. soooo want! - Can Koklu
I have the dmc-zs3 also, and I really like the HD Video it generates - RAPatton
Mike, that's cool! - Kol Tregaskes
I have a G9 that I absolutely adore. If the G11 knocks peoples' socks off, I know what I'll be using my end-of-year bonus on. :D - Hookuh Tinypants
I am done with P&S cameras. I've had too many already and since I don't own a DSLR, Olympus EP-1 or Panasonic Lumix GH1 micro four thirds cameras would fit the bill though a bit larger and quite pricey. Hard to get in the states though! - TINY REPTILIAN PYROMANIAC
Kol: I wouldn't say the S90 is "better", but I'm willing to sacrifice a bit of long end zoom and manual controls for a slimmer package and f2.0 vs f2.8. Seems like the S90 and G11 have the same "guts"... oh, and I've never said "gosh, I wish this camera had a fold out screen"... Basic Side-by-Side comparison http://www.dpreview.com/reviews... - Ken Sheppardson
Thanks, Ken! - Kol Tregaskes
well this certainly looks pretty exciting. I'll be glad i didn't get a g10 - Matt Ellsworth
I got the G7 prior to my 50D and it's still a great camera! I don't get to use it as much anymore, but I often look at it and think it should ALWAYS be in my bag if I'm not toting around my 50D. - Gregg Le Blanc

Interesting hack - For use with the Eye-fi Wireless SD memory card ~ "I'd like to release an updated version of the Eye Fi standalone server in python that I have been working on. "The server can now execute an arbitrary command on each uploaded photo. This is a very dangerous feature and should be used with caution. On the other hand it is also very cool. You can have the server FTP files, display them using an image viewer, or even run sorting programs on the images." - Micah

Old vs. New Polaroid instant camera: Which is faster? | DVICE - http://dvice.com/archive...
"When we first saw the Polaroid PoGo instant camera — a device that combines a digital camera with a small ink-based printer — we were less than impressed. At the time, the seconds that ticked by as we waited for the tiny print to come out felt excruciating, but it got us wondering: Is it still faster than waiting for those old white-bordered prints to develop? After digging up an old-school Polaroid instant camera in the DVICE Archive Vault, we pitted old vs. new to see who is, or was, actually the fastest." - Kol Tregaskes from Bookmarklet

"With digital cameras it helps to play your cards right! SD cards, Compact Flash, xD-Picture Cards and all the flavours of Memory Stick … all have similar structures, so it’s wise to follow some guidelines in their use." - Kol Tregaskes from Bookmarklet
Kol Tregaskes
"And not only cameras: the cards are also found in PDAs, mobile phones, go-anywhere music players, robotic dogs, printers and laptops … even TV sets have card slots. Many modern cameras build in significant amounts of memory so we can head out for a shoot without a moment’s hesitation. Yet the size of images today coupled with the digicam’s emerging talents as a video camcorder means that we need big dollops of portable memory." - Kol Tregaskes from Bookmarklet

World's fastest camera relies on new type of imaging, takes 6 million frames per second - http://www.physorg.com/news160...
"Ultrafast, light-sensitive video cameras are needed for observing high-speed events such as shockwaves, communication between living cells, neural activity, laser surgery and elements of blood analysis. To catch such elusive moments, a camera must be able to capture millions or billions of images continuously with a very high frame rate. Conventional cameras are simply not up to the task." - Kol Tregaskes from Bookmarklet

"We knew good and well Nikon's highly anticipated D5000 was supposed to start shipping today, and ship they did. Our own unit just arrived courtesy of an altogether suspicious unmarked white van, but rather than questioning the driver, we figured it prudent to just give you a closer look at what exactly comes in the box. Obviously, we got ahold of the D5000 Kit, which runs $849.95 and comes bundled with an 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR Nikkor lens. Initial impressions are as follows: it's lightweight, it's sexy and the articulating display is downright spectacular. Sure, it lacks some resolution compared to the D90's fixed LCD, but it sure shines bright." - gallery here: http://www.engadget.com/photos... - Kol Tregaskes from Bookmarklet
