What is the scientific paper? 3: The metric - http://www.cotch.net/blog...
Don't agree necessarilly with the conclusion (I still maintain the problem is the notion of the journal) but this is an interesting series spun out of the session at Science Online London last month - Cameron Neylon
I agree the problem is the notion of the journal (which is one of those print world habits I think we should try to do away with). So we will have to think up convincing alternatives (and: practise in using them :-) - Claudia Koltzenburg
hey, i've not changed my mind about anything i said in the previous post: the journal is still a problem! just saying, we're unlikely to get anywhere with fixing the journal problem 'till we fix the credit/metrics problem... - Joe Dunckley
I think you've moved from the problem to the symptom rather than vice versa - though really the difference is just one of the emphasis rather than anything else. Fundamentally I agree with everything you say but I think the metrics issue is slightly orthogonal. Not that it matters. We need to solve both problems anyway. - Cameron Neylon
